Marc Stein is well-connected, so he is generally accurate with things he reports. But I remain skeptical with his report on ESPN.com that Stephon Marbury will join the Boston Celtics once he reaches a buyout with the Knicks.

The Celtics have been among the list of teams often mentioned as a possible destination for Marbury. Rajon Rondo gets a ton of minutes and is having an all-star caliber season. The Celts have Sam Cassell on the bench, though he rarely plays, and Gabe Pruitt has done nothing to make anyone believe he can contribute in a key role come playoff time.

Stein says a source told him Kevin Garnett hasn't said anything against having Marbury join the team, but there is always concerns when it comes to Marbury. I can tell you this: LeBron James and the Cavaliers certainly hope Marbury brings his crazy up to Beantown.

It's a curious fit for Marbury, who wouldn't get a lot of minutes behing Rondo and would have to contend with Eddie House for ticks at the two behind Ray Allen. Marbury and House have a private feud, which came public during a preseason game at the Garden in October. How does that get settled in the Boston locker room?

But Marbury may prefer to latch on to a winner just to clean up his reputation and hope he can parlay a respectable playoff run into a new contract in July.

I will say this, however, when it comes to the buyout talks. If Stephon really had a team already interested and the team put a dollar amount on the table, you think he'd have wasted the past month holding in a stalemate with Donnie Walsh?

If there is a team out there that wants him, Marbury's delay has nothing to do with the buyout. Once he's ready to sign (perhaps he needs time to get back in shape) or a team is ready to sign him (10-day contract can begin being offered on Monday), I think it's safe to say buyout talks with the Knicks will move swiftly.

By the way, Patrick Ewing Jr. is averaging 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 34.3 minnutes per game after six games with the Reno Bighorns (D-League). Once Marbury's gone, PJ could get a 10-day look.

good bye to bad rubbish marbury sign ewing jr for rest of season get sg guard maybe wally z from clv

Starbs has a dysfunctional personality with bad-ass body language and smoldering facial expressions, he has nothing to say to teammates and no one understands or likes him. So let him go and muck up the team of his desire....it will only help the Knix and seal his fate. Boston is not dumb enuf to screw up a good thing. Hasta la vista and ciao Starbs -- get your passport ready and brush up on some Spanish and Italian., or go start a sneaker factory in Iraq or a rec center and a hot dog joint in Coney Island with all your loot.

I've got to echo Sec11 here. I never want to hear, read, write, or think about Stephon Marbury again for the rest of my life.

No real thoughts to add, but I wanted to go on the record officially. This is worse than the 2 year election we just went through.

And yes, I know you have to report on these stories, Alan, but good God almighty, I just can't take it anymore. That's real talk.

They should not buy him out. Instead, Donnie should keep him sitting the rest of the year so that his career suffers as much damage as possible. This cunt should not be allowed to play again this year; he's shown he doesn't care, anyway.

hahn why do u and isloa hate steph so much was that intern your girl if not shut up about him hes basically not on the team And how is he crazy i don't understand hes smarter than you hes making 21 million dollars doing nothing i cant rember him doing something crazy maybe the interview but besides that i cant remember one can you do that. You talk about lebron like you know him lebron couldn't give a damn about steph most people tend to mind their own business. You talk about berman Berman blog is clearly more read than yours. You call berman a marbuary shill hes the only one who's doing objective journalism he doesnt hate steph like you do for no reason Stop talking about the guy my god get a life you loser

I thought the Celtics weren't allowed to comment on players in another team's uniform? Seems like alot of speculation about nothing during a slow news cycle.

It gets settled like this....

Steph: I got you. I got you, dog. One love.

Eddie: Thanks.

(2 months later)

Steph: I am a starter. Period!!!!!!

(A fued with Doc Rivers and KG begins.)

Dear max the knick fan:

You can't string together a complete sentence. You can't even spell Marbury. So I don't think that you are qualified to judge his intelligence, nor Hahn's blog. When you pass 1st grade, you can give commenting another try. Or just thinking, at all.

The more I think about it, Marbury is the NBA's T.O. There's drama wherever he goes, too many gossipy interviews and no championships.

@ max

You win - most illiterate, inane post ever to appear on this blog.

Competition was tough, but you've done it -- you're the man now dawg!

that faint breathing you hear is the sound of Sec11 on a respirator. according to his wife, he was reading this morning's blog about "stephon marbury formerly known as a basketball player", when he suddenly collapsed. he is resting somewhat comfortably now, but while he can't talk, he was able to scratch out a few words "a hahn, no mas, no mas, no mas......"

i think it is imperative for the long term health of Sec11, that he not be exposed to the anything having to do with this mr. marbury going forward. i have done some research on the internet regarding this former basketball player, and it is apparent that everything he has touched in his life has gotten worse, including my patient.

a hahn, whoever you may be, i urge you to protect Sec11 from this destructive force in the future.

sincerely,

Sec11's Physician

this sounds more like Stephon Marbury than the blog post that he did over at Berman's.

Dear smoldering Moron:

You didn't address the issue at hand. Why is Hahn Still talking about the guy. Why is Steph Crazy i don't get it, Your probably a bandwagon Steph hater. Your not smart enough to realize facts. If the really wanted steph to play their would have been a uniform in the locker room. Clearly their wasn't so Daphony is not telling the truth these are facts. Is Hahn suppose to be a journalist, or a writer if he is should stop being so biased hes turning out to be frank isola and no writer should ever follow that losers path

Larry Brown has a Curry and Lee craving. Possible deal with David Lee and Eddie Curry for Boris Diaw and Raja Bell. I would do this with out even thinking about it. Lee is going to walk and you get a more versatile player in Diaw and Raja Bell know Mike and knows about grit and defense. Raja is off the books next year. Diaws contract is a little fatter but tradable down the road.

The one think is the Bobcat having to settle with Lee over the summer.

Calling me stupid means nothing to me. You keep talking about Steph like he plays for the Knicks he does not . You call Steph stupid hes making 21 million dollars for doing nothing Get over it. Knicks are losing without him stop trying to blame someone else. And for the guy who wrote i feel you dog i appreciate the racial undertone doesn't bother me a bit. Your probably a republican who listens to rush and hannity Stop being a hater its not going to get you anywhere period

Despite all the obvious progress, I still have to believe – on the basis of talent alone – the Knicks are among the 4 or 5 worst teams in the league. I’m not an expert on every roster. But most teams have at least one player more talented than anybody on the Knicks. And that’s a problem. Let’s not forget that when Danny Ainge went shopping for super-stars, he already had Paul Pierce, the eventual MVP of the Finals. We have David Lee, a fledgling small forward and an injured rookie. And Nate, I suppose. That ain’t a lot. Even a team like Oklahoma at least has Durant.

What’s the point? First, with 18 months to go, we just can’t know who will survive from this roster. And second, we’re still going to have a long way to go. I don’t see the need to start making travel arrangement for the 2011 Finals.

Fundamentally, though, I like what Walsh is doing. Maybe he’s more conservative than I’d like. (I wanted him to be more aggressive around the draft, leading to more picks.) But he’s obviously got a plan. And so far, at least, it appears to be working.

But just because progress has been made, we can’t forget how deep the hole was when he took over. It’s shocking how little talent (assets) he had to work with. (In effect, Isiah bet the bank on Stephon and Curry – players we certainly can’t trade and probably can’t even GIVE away to another team.. I’d say that should be worthy of a congressional bail-out.)

I think it’s going to be fascinating to watch the run-up to 2010. Who from the current roster will still be here and who won’t? I still think players like Nate and Lee are best suited for the second unit on a team looking to go deep into the playoffs. Chandler? The rookie? We just don’t know. We’ve seen glimpses of first unit, star-potential, but only glimpses.

For the right deal, I have to believe every player on the current roster is available. Isiah had an eye for talent, but he always went after players he liked instead of players we needed. Now we’re going to watch Walsh build a team from the ground up. It’s possible any number of current Knicks will be on the team when camp opens in September (?) 2010. But it’s just as likely the entire current roster will be gone. A whole new team. All 15 slots. Some of that will be based on what D’Antoni and Walsh see over the next 18 months. And some of it will be based on what players become available . . . what we need . . . and what deals are on the table.

But this ain’t no make-over. Walsh is building a brand new house. Whether he uses some of the elements from the old house . . . or essentially treats it as an empty lot is what remains to be seen.

max,

Have you ever even read bermans blog? If you call that
objective journalism then i am sorry for you. Whenever i want to
laugh, or get old news that has already been posted on newsday,
i will go read bermans blog.
--I agree with Across the hudson and sec11. Enough about marbury.

Get a life max.

@Trane - Walsh is going to create a team in a year with cap that we are creating. To me I don't want the playoffs this year or next. I know we have to suck up the next two years as tryouts for the revamped purchased dynasty in 2011 team roster. The draft we can still look for either a defensive center or future point guard. Lottery has never been kind to us other than 1985. Lets see.

I say we got a shot at getting two premier players in there prime. Just image LeBron and Chris Bosh together. I don't care if Le2010 doesn't come we still are going to get two franchise players in any combination. Now we got to narrow who to keep for our next major run. We will flat out scary and deadly and in a good way.

I am curious about all the hate going on with the Marbs situation also. I feel as though a lot of it is a personal attack and go overboard at times. If you hate him, hate him for the game and what he does to and for it, but it seems as though Isola, Hahn and a lot of bloggers take it to the personal level. I know it is hard for people to seperate the 2, but he has done more for underprivlege people than a lot of you and your stars Lebron. Hate him for the game and not the person. Anyway holla back. O when is Q Bicherson gone..

I think you are reacting to the lost blog's comments section right Trane? In that case, I agree our team is the least talented team (in terms of young talent) in the league. We just traded away too many 1st round picks over the years and traded for too many washed up or underperforming vets. Rebuilding will take time but we have to be careful not to overvalue our players. as we tend to do here in NY.

Okl has Westbrook, Jeff Green, and Durant. They aren't winning, but they at least have some young talent there. Go team by team if you want, IT destroyed us and it is going to take time to turn it around. 35 wins I give D'Antoni for being a "great offensive coach". I watched alot of PHX games over the years, the guy can flat out perfect an offensive system. DW just has to get him some talent. It is actually kind of a shame because in this weak draft we should have been tanking and trying to get a top 3 pick. Having a coach that can squeeze an extra ten wins out of mediocre players probably wasn't in our best long term interests.

Why would the team have a jersey for the player after the player already "DECLINED" to play? If the player was told they had a starting job for him and he agreed to play than he could have just told a trainer hey I need my jersey tonight. The player in question likes to play word games but even Berman admits he said he "DECLINED" the starters job for the rest of the season. If he had already "DECLINED" the job then why would he expect to have a jersey waiting for him?

Max, your intelligence level equals that of a Reeses Monkey. How is that for a fact? I am not ignoring this fact.

Another fact, I understand, is that if Steph is not out of here by March 1, he cannot sign with another playoff team? Is that how it is?

They should release him on March 2nd. This guy doesn't deserve to be alive, much less playing in the League again.

I just don't see Walsh, or especially Dolan for that matter, wanting Steph in Boston. I might be wrong, they might not care, but its just my opinion.

http://njmg.typepad.com/knickknacks/2009/01/report-steph-to-boston.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Steve Adamek had a good point today. That is, it is getting closer and closer to the trade deadline, and the Knicks might as well hold onto Steph until then in case some team decides they really want to get under the cap this coming off season to get Boozer or Artest or someone like that.

It's going to be hilarious when/if Stephon Marbury goes to Boston and they start losing! Shame on the Celtics for even considering signing this clown.

Since Stephon Marbury continues to embarrass this organization and cannot stay quiet, I would not even negotiate a buyout if I were Donnie Walsh. Marbury wants to blame Knicks management for HIS attitude and issues and he wants to attend games from the stands and take shots at the Knicks in blogs? I would ignore his phone calls and let him rot in L.A. or wherever he is right now.

I am shocked that any NBA club would take a chance on this moron given his behaviour this season.

He doesn't want to play basketball, cares much more about the money, and is just an overall head-case/jerk/prima donna.

May the next club that signs him fail miserably.

steph shouldn't be alive my god you really need to get a life. Why do you hate the guy that much. What did he do to you? Stop being an angry white guy. If you want to make 21 million dollars find a way how to, who cares if he slept with an intern was that your girl, who cares if hes making millions of dollars doing nothing how does that affect you. Talking about my intelligence you think a basketball player shouldn't be alive for no reason. Stop listening to rush and hannity their not going to make your life better loser.

I can't argue with you, because you're an idiot. And if one argues with an idiot, an observer cannot tell the difference. So I will not blur that line. Idiot.

"who cares if hes making millions of dollars doing nothing how does that affect you."

For those of us who actually pay for Knicks tickets or have partial season ticket plans, it does "affect" us. One would hope that a reduction in overall team payroll would also equal a deduction in ticket prices. We can hope anyway.

I have to go with Max here.
Why is there so much personal hate for Steph?
I can understand you saying he's a bad player and a cancer for a
team but some of these comments are a little overboard don't you
think?
Hate the player Steph and not the person Steph.

"I can't argue with you, because you're an idiot. And if one argues with an idiot, an observer cannot tell the difference. So I will not blur that line. Idiot."

LOL. that's harsh, but funny nonetheless.

Knicks4 – I agree. The combination of squandered #1 picks and terrible long-term contracts (for mediocre talent) is Isiah’s legacy to the Knicks . . . and maybe a few decent second-unit players. In other words: disaster.

AR – I don’t believe in tanking games, but I completely agree that we’re better off in the lottery this year. (No #1 pick in 2010, right? Doesn’t Utah have it, via Phoenix, in the Marbury deal?) We just need talent too badly. But I think a year is optimistic, especially with someone as methodical and conservative as Walsh. (Are you counting summer 2010 as one year away?) Certainly, he’ll “spend” most of the cap room in the summer of 2010. But I think it’s wildly optimistic to imagine the team will be completely rebuilt at that point. I’m sure there will still be pieces missing . . .

I don’t get all the Marbury nonsense. Of course he’s a member of the team. If he’s taking up a roster slot, he’s a member of the team. But at this point, he’s a BORING member of the team. I have little interest in reading about him. That said, Hahn writes about him because it’s part of the story of covering the team. The roster slot is news. His buy-out is news. Where he might go around the league is news. That’s what a beat writer does. Show me personal attacks. I haven’t read any. Sorry, Max. You may want to trash a blog, but you need to get your story straight first. To call Berman – who’s been in Marbury’s back pocket for years – objective, and Alan biased . . . is just patently wrong. (And few here support a comment like he doesn’t deserve to live. But that’s the exception here, not the rule, as you seem to suggest.)

Also Alan’s right – Marbury would be negotiating very differently if he really had a team ready to pick him up. Otherwise, he really is a moron. Indeed, this is traditionally why players take buy-outs. I don’t believe Marbury would be stupid enough to “hold out for every penny” if it’s preventing him from signing a contract, which would make back most – if not all – of what he gave up in the buy-out. Moreover, what happened to all that talk about “I just want to play”? (BTW -- I don’t believe the Celtics would gamble on him.)

Either way, that’s my SM comment for 2009. I’d happily drop the subject completely. Or at least relegate him to the level of attention he deserves. At best, Marbury is a footnote to this Knicks season, no longer a headline. The amount of space he takes up here is way out of whack. He’s just not important enough to the team . . . or interesting enough.

Hey Sal, Relax, Bro...
You do sound like an angry white guy.
As someone who doesn't like Steph and never did,
as a player, I can understand your frustration but to lose your cool to the point where you're wishing his death is just lame. If your so much smarter than max, try expressing yourself with your giant intellect instead of your hurt little emotions. That said, max, stephs actions do hurt the team, which inturn hurts the diehard fans.(that would be us) He's never been a team player and if he really loved the game and his teammates he'd be on the bench waiting for his opportunity to contribute.
We need to rebuild fellas...we've needed it since Patrick was shuffled out of town.
GO KNICKS!

Oh yeah, Happy New Year.....pop!

@Max, Everybody has a perspective. Alan has his and Marc has his. This is Alan's blog. He is not a journalist here. He can only write about his perspective here and not somebody else's. If you don't like his perspective, you don't have to be here. What is the point in coming here and asking him to shut up? Wouldn't that be idiotic? You tell us who needs to get a life. If you like Berman's blog so much, why don't you just stay there.

As for Stephon, when he first came here, he acted like his life's dream had come true. He went ballistic about how much the team meant to him. He being a local boy, he naturally belonged to the team, the fans and the city. And then about 4 years later, when the team needed him, he 'declined' to play for the team just because he did not like the coach's plan. Was he answerable only to the coach? What about the fans that he was letting down. What about the city that he grew up in that he was letting down. Was he not in contract with the team still? Was the team not paying his salary still? How can he just 'decline' to play? The coach didn't play him for the first 11 games and so he decides by himself that he is not going to play for the entire year!!! How ridiculous is that? If he decided to quit on the team, he should have forfeited his salary too. I don't think anybody would have lost respect for him then. I just don't understand how anybody can defend him at this point.

Speaking of Knick talent or a lack thereof, here's a link for a very interesting and even-handed piece of what Isiah walked into:

http://www.realgm.com/src_feature_pieces/719/20081230/isiahs_suicide_mission_revisiting_the_worst_roster_in_nba_history/

Happy New Year!

Jarred Jeffries is the worse signing in the history of the Knicks
Organization.

Lol, he looks terrible tonight DaJoka. Hopefully Alan will stop defending him and writing articles about how "useful" and "good" he can look in this "system". He is getting rebounds though.

Good to see former fixer making a move up to the east side! Nice article Modi.

2003, how soon we forget! The highest payroll combined with an injured Antonio/Houston as the featured stars! What a mess.

BTW: How is Indiana looking? No closer to a championship than we are.

Keep hope alive in 2009.

Excellent article by Knicks fan in Taiwan! Great, really great! I have always felt that Dolan's big mistake, of many; was to force Isiah into the coaching seat. I also feel the Knicks liked Isiah so much that they were willing to retain his eye for talent by keeping him working in another capacity; talent search oriented. I feel that his suicide attempt was a further dagger to Marbury's Knicks career, since it was right after the suicide attempt that Marbury was banished by a new direction. I agree with Dan L that Walsh will avoid Marbury going to Boston, but at what price? Why not play him? He'll be walking away anyway. Curry, Marbury and Gallo coming back gives the Knicks something of hope towards the playoffs. His coming back can't be any worst than the BS going on now. It might help to mend any part the Knicks appear to be wrong with the present situation. We could trade him to LA or San Antonio instead of allowing him to walk away to Boston.

? ! ' : ; , .
Here you go, Max. Feel free to use those any time you want. They're called punctuation marks (pəŋk-chə-'wā-shən). Oh, and also: there/their/they're, your/you're. I know, it's a little tricky, but you'll get used to it.
Hahn, I normally agree with you. Dig this blog. But I have to take exception to this line: "I will say this, however, when it comes to the buyout talks. If Stephon really had a team already interested and the team put a dollar amount on the table, you think he'd have wasted the past month holding in a stalemate with Donnie Walsh?" Sure, that's what a rational person would do, but Marbury's proven beyond a doubt that he's anything but. I would not put it past him to continue to dig in his heels, even if it torpedoed any chance of moving to a team like the Celtics. His is a classic case of cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Heri,
Isiaih signed Jeffries and Jerome James. We're still
suffering from that 'great eye for talent' syndrome.
We got rid of Mo Taylor, Jalen Rose, Steve Francis,
Channing Frye, Balkman (cough Rondo), and our
all time favorite, Mardy Airballs.
Then there's Malik Rose, and so on.

i wit DaJoka and Max, I think too many fellow fans get too personal. I'm not a Marbury Hater but he has been a terrible team player to say the least. I know, I appreciate the cheap clothing line and sneakers, cuz I ain't rich and I'd rather spend the money on my kids and still look half decent.

We could always go to youtube and cry together.lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T2l5Emzu-I

#33 for life!!!

Stephon Marbury will be a Laker soon after his buyout is completed. Phil Jackson and Kobe will keep him in check. If it doesn't work out they can let him walk
