Curry's close

Saw the weirdest thing at practice today.

A 6-foot-11 300-pound behemoth at the top of the key handling the ball, going behind his back (or attempting to) and dribbling down the lane en route to the basket much to the delight of his teammates. The culprit?

Eddy Curry. Yes, you read that correctly. Not only was Curry practicing for the second time in three days, he was working on his handles during a certain sequence as the Knicks were practicing the pick-and-roll. He wasn't doing it for show -- and it wasn't a great one anyway because the cat still has a lot of rust to knock off his game.

This is something, Knicks fans, you might be seeing in the near future.

"In our system, he'll have opportunities to handle the ball," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said after practice. "That's not something that will always be that way. We want him to be a basketball player. I think he'll like it. He'll have more opportunities. He's quicker than you think."

Eddy_Curry_250.jpg

Curry, sporting a razor-stubble type short beard, seemed encouraged and happy. He said his conditioning wasn't as bad as he thought it would be and, believe it or not, he hasn't tired himself during practice because he's so genuinely happy to be back out there. So happy, in fact, that he'll gladly welcome any role D'Antoni has for him.

“Man, right now I’ll do whatever he wants me to do," Curry said. "If he wants me to run the point, I’ll run that. But I’m just going to try to be the best player I can be and just try to fill that void for us.”

And when should fans expect to see the beefy Curry? Sooner than you think.

“I think this week," Curry said. "Honestly, I think this week I’ll be back. Right now, it’s just a matter of me getting my wind back. If I can keep pushing myself harder and there’s no swelling and no setbacks, I think it should be this week.”

D'Antoni didn't rule out giving Curry some garbage time minutes against the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow night if the situation arises. He could make his season debut Thursday in Dallas vs. the Mavs, but Saturday in Houston against Yao is probably more likely. Either way, he's going to play on this four-game road trip and Curry is just pleased D'Antoni hasn't lost faith in him.

“It’s definitely good to know that coach wants me back, and I want to be back and the guys want me back," he said. "It’s a good feeling and right now I’m doing everything I can to get back and be 100 percent."

Curry's teammates are looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the table in D'Antoni's system.

“Definitely," Al Harrington said. "We’ll have that synergy of force down there. Guys, they are going to have to double team and if they don’t we are going to make them pay every time. So we are very exited to get him out there on the floor. Obviously, he’s got to get in better shape to run up and down with us. But I think he’s dedicated and he’s ready to get out there and contribute. So I think he is focusing on helping us.”

That's what I'm talking about Alan...

It's good to have Curry back on the floor.

Now we can force other teams to double Curry and we can
really get some open jump shots.

Can't wait to see how thi works.

Good news, but lets not lose sight of this - from the front office perspective he is back on the floor in just enough time to show that he is healthy and productive (productive enough to be included in a trade, I mean). You gotta know that they will move him as fast as they can.

If Curry starts, does Jeffries come off the bench?

god help us

Let Curry look good by trade deadline,
then dump..um..trade him for Bell to the Bobcats
after we get Bayless, Frye and a 2009 1rst and
2nd rounder from Portland for Lee& Roberson, While Q ends
up in Clipperville for Camby. Things are looking up!

Dantoni has to ease the big fella into this...if he gets winded out there...a knee cap is gonna come flying into the stands. Then all is lost for a trade.

How is Eddie still looking fat though?. Are you telling me that the Doctor said its ok to start playing in practice without riding a bike for 2 weeks..or running on a tread mill? Thats crazy. If this guy starts to run up and down hard during games, he's gonna be in a suit again and all of a sudden he went from Eddie Curry to Oliver Miller. This is such a gamble getting him back in games outta shape. Dantoni should'nt play him much. Little here..little there...make him run up and down the baseline during practice. Make him ride a bike on the side during games. Forget this ball handling stuff. The guy needs to be featured as a bull in the paint. Not a fat guy with a handle. If he gets injured again...then we are really screwed.

So the fat man with no knees returns before the broke back Italian.

Lets see how good an offensive coach D'Antoni is. Can he really incorporate Eddie into an offense that hasn't featured any postups all seasons?

There is a lot that Curry can contribute, for example:

He can trail fast breaks and bull through the lane for easy baskets. This will require Curry to be in shape and, while he won’t need to be the first player up the court, he will need to get up the court and do it fast. Is he capable? I guess we’ll see.
Take up space in the paint on D. As most any Knicks fan can tell you, opposing teams are able to just waltz their way into the paint. Even outside shooters like Wally Szczerbiak have torched the Knicks inside. It happens every game. Well, Curry doesn’t block shots, but he can take up space and interfere with drives. Often all it takes to turn a make into a miss is to get in someone’s way, even if the shot isn’t blocked. Curry is a big body that can get in a cutter’s or penetrator’s way and alter a shot without necessarily blocking it.

For more ways Curry can contribute, please see http://www.knicksfan.net/?p=178. Thanks!

Baby steps.. theknicksblog dot com has a video from practice.. He still looks chubby and huffing up and down teh court.. At one point the video cuts to him back on the stationary bike..

I still think it's gonna be a long road to hoe getting him back to meaningful contributions and a valuable trade chip

Dont Forget about Nate is DW gonna give him 10mil in the offseason he needs to be traded also we gotta go after bayless and draft picks and maybe frye who wont play if LEE goes to portland. So were gonna be the Portland of the East with all the young talent that we could have on the team.

At least we Only have to wait until the deadline so moves will be made very soon.

is everyone on crack in here? we are talking about trading our MVP for some combination of (most likely) useless mid-round picks, 3 guys (BAYLESS, RODRIGUEZ, FRYE) who can't get any burn in portland, and CAMBY, a 34 year old defensive center who will have no value in 2010.

wake up and smell the coffee, BAYLESS is behind RODRIGUEZ who is behind BLAKE in their depth charts. CAMBY was traded for a 2nd round pick a few months ago.

don't get me wrong, i'm all for moving LEE while his value is at an all time high, but not for this kind of garbage. we need to dump an ugly contract (JEFFRIES, CURRY) in the deal and in addition to FRYE/CAMBY and BAYLESS and a PICK, we need to pick up a banger (maybe OUTLAW, though he's not actually a banger and as i wrote earlier he's a 2 trapped in a 3 body who's in love with a pretty jumper that doesn't go in enough, but preferably PRZYBILLA).

NO DUMPED CONTRACT, NO DEAL. KEEP THE EYE ON THE 2010 PRIZE.

Hold up Sec11 so called useless mid 1st round picks can get you Danny Granger, end of the 1st round picks can net you David Lee and Wilson Chandler... Its what you do with the picks not so much where they are... Lottery picks can get you Sweetney too... And step back for a second and look at what Bayless and Jordan would be if they stayed in school your looking at two possible top ten picks... Bayless would be top 5... And If David Lee can get you Frye, Camby, Bayless, and Jordan., its hard to argue that he is worth more than that... Camby would be an all star in the east, and is a better rebounder than Lee and Frye is a solid player, Who could easily average 12pts and 6rebs in this system.. and you essentially get two draft picks and thats not enough... I dont see how... Saying you want different pieces is one thang but saying this trade lacks talent is another...

He plays no Defense at all. He will foul out in the first five minutes if you let him. He gives up on plays. His main ally oopper in Crawford is gone.

And he wants to play the point?

Eddie you get the foul in garbage time at the the end of games.

2 First Round Draft Picks

Please... I can't see him playing meaningful minutes with the group.

Sorry Sec11...The Kid does make a point. How can you not like
this deal for the Knicks. Camby is better than Lee down low
period. Plus Camby has a better jump shot than Lee period.
I would rather have Camby as our starting C than Lee as our
starting C. He's a better rebounder, more athletic and the most
important thing of all....HE BLOCKS SHOTS!!!
He's averaging a double double just like Lee is...he actually
averages more rebounds than Lee this year. He's almost at 14
rebounds a game bruh!!!
Also...people say Camby is not in the long term plans. LMAO
Camby is what .....33 or 34? By the time we get to next summer
he'll be what...34 or 35? At the most just turned 36. Why can't
Camby still play at 36? If he's doing what he's doing this year,
what's to stop him from doing the same thing a year and a half
from now? It's not like the guy is 37 or 38.
Plus we're getting Bayless, S-Rod and a pick?
Sheeeeeeeeet.....that's more than enough. Jordan is just the
icing on the cake.
I do know that Camby would be the perfect C to have with say
Lebron, Wade, Bosh, Amare, Joe Johnson...whoever we decide
to bring in.
Make it happen Donnie!!!!!!!!!!
We're behind ya...(no homo)

@sec 11

i think walsh could probably
trade lee for a more established player
but the key is cost effectiveness

walsh probably feels that it is better
to go for players with an huge upside
that are low on cost

Camby's contract expires in 2010
frye is a restricted free agent
bayless and jordan are under
cost control for 3 years at least

so the key is not just to trade
but to trade with an eye on the salary cap

if the trade goes through
it would be a win win for the knicks

nice job, sec11 for calling BS on all the excitement over bayless, sergio, and frye.

any conversation with portland about lee starts with rudy fernandez.

Are you guys serious talking about Frye?
Really? I don't understand why there are so many Lee haters....you guys don't know basketball and you probably never played the game.

Damn shame...

Dan,
I just read on one of the blogs that the trade for Lee was made up by some blogger as a joke and it was picked up "The Knicks Blog."

Also, Isola asked Walsh about it and he said, "Knicks president Donnie Walsh DENIED that he is working on a three-way deal with the Blazers and Clippers, but several team sources confirmed that Walsh and the Knicks' coaching staff have discussed the POSSIBILITY of adding Camby, who was traded from Denver to the Clippers last July."

So it may be just a rumor. Walsh discussed the possibility of adding Camby as they do a lot of people but that was it.....

Isola is a lazy POS.. he goes and asks Donnie straight up? What kind of answer does he expect.. "Oh sure Ice.. here is exactly what we are doing".

Tommy Dee at TKB has sources who are anonymous at this point.. Not "blog posters" but sources inside NBA Front offices..

trades are brewing and where there is smoke there is fire..

exciting time y'all/

I would keep D.lee
only if he agreed to a contract
under market value

if i was walsh
i would ask D.lee and his agent
straight up if this was possible

Lee says he loves the knicks
so maybe he can be flexible
if not then i would start pursuing trades

BTY
i like D.Lee alot (even though he plays no D)
and would love to keep him
but i don't think
he is worth 10 Mil a year
6 or 7 Mil
Yes

Nate too
he is not worth 10 mil either
same deal
be flexible or get traded

@ FLY....unfortunately, FERNANDEZ is untouchable. have you seen that guy play? his game is sick.

@ KID and DAJOKA....i'm not sure which JORDAN you refer to (DEANDRE? you're kidding me, right? wasn't he STAY TUNE FOR MORE KNOWLEDGE'S boy?), but the deal's no good if you don't get a big man with a future (CAMBY'S all-star years are well behind him, but PRZYBILLA interests me), some low cost/high upside talent (BAYLESS and/or a high pick), AND a salary dump. i realize other pieces have to be involved in order to make it work, but this is fair value, this is a win-win for both franchises.

rightly or wrongly, LEE is one of the hottest commodity's in the league right now. in this case it's a seller's market, and teams who believe they can challenge for the ring in the next year or two will be willing to pay dearly for him. if we're going to turn some team into a championship contender by giving them LEE, then i want some serious payback down the road.

ODOM, ROY, FERNANDEZ, LEE, OUTLAW, BATUM, BLAKE, WEBSTER: barring injury, in two years you could bet the mortgage that they will be in the western finals.

This is a thread from realgm..:

It was probably you who emailed Isola with this lame trade and he put in the paper to sell some papers.

no. i put this trade up on theknicksblog and ny post and tommy dee emailed me and asked if it was true and i pretended to be a real sports guy and he belived me so he put up the article on theknicksblog and then the rumors started and now the trade might happen.

 So you're one of their "sources".

I was waiting for THIS post from this poster. Won't give the guy a pass on this one, huh? Tommy was duped

Just because he made the name of the same from the Knicksblog does not mean it is him. It could be someone who is messing with fans. I am suspect on this guy who says he is this guy and if i was a MOD i would ban his account now. If it's true then he is a trouble maker and this site does not need posters like this. If it's not then same and he is a liar and again a trouble maker either way he needs to be banned.

Well in all Fairness then Tommy Dee would have to go as well. As hes posted more BS on this site then anyone I know.

Yeah but The Post didn't print it. Frank Assola printed it because he's the least credible source ever. Its funny that he didn't even contact the poster and he still printed it in the News Paper. What a loser.

Someone is always willing to overpay a big like Lee and hope the Knicks don't match. It happens every year. I can't blame Lee for taking the money either. Question for the experts out there? Can we give him a good overall contract that has a low salary in 2010. Something like 12 mill, 3 mill, 10, 10, 10. Do they average out the salary for cap purposes to keep you from doing stuff like that?

@jp -- I know multi year raises are limited to around 10% of the previous year.. not sure about decreases..

But that clause would affect the third year in your scenario.. where the third year could only be 10.5% greater than year 2

Sec11 are you actually telling me that Camby couldnt be an all-star in the east with his numbers... Are you for real, Are you saying because he is 34 his game will fall apart next year... He doesnt seem to be slowing down now... I'm just not hearing anything that would lead me to believe he wont actually put up better numbers in Dan 's system, remember Lee didnt even look this good last year...Neither did any of the Knicks... And the only Suns player putting up better numbers this year out of this system is Shaq... So Camby could be an all-star next year... Listen I have nothing against Lee, I like him but I think that many Knicks fans overvalue him... If he would take 6 or 7mil I would love to keep him... But why would he? You gotta get value for him while you can... He is not Shaq, trades have to be fair.. If you trade him and get a better player than him in return and 2 young guys with upside and a solid nba player you are making off like a bandit... Now if you want to make the trade Fernandez and Frye and no Bayless, Camby, or Jordan I understand but I cant agree that he is worth more... And I didnt say Jordan was a superstar in the making but his rookie numbers arent much different from Bynums so who knows how good he could be... Honestly I think that Portland should be willing to part with Rudy(they would still have Batum, Webster, and Outlaw) but then you cant expect to get much else but Frye or a late draft pick...

As far as Przybilla his contracts goes to 2011

yo sec11 u kiddin rite
whateva jordan u talking about i don't know

so that aint my boy...

i would keep lee
if your trading him u need a first rounder a second an players.

stay tuned for more KnowLedge

His game could very well fall apart given his frequent injuries. You're not getting a player that's better than Lee in return. You're renting a player for a year and what for? Camby won't be here in 2010. Frye. Been there. Done that. A late draft pick is a stupid idea when we already have the real deal in Lee.

Biggie,
This Tommy guy used a blogger (who pretended to be a source). He even admitted that he used a blogger as the source and he didn't check it out first.

See here:

tommydee10 wrote: "guys in fairness, this trade was mentions in the comments section of my blog. I haven't confirmed it through my LA sources, who helped us break the Clips Randolph deal.
So until I confirm it this is just a rumor. It does make some sense tho..." http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=867770&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=30

And see here...a post from The News that gives the links to this trade rumor that was allegedly started by a blogger....

Frank, I hope you're aware the the Clippers angle was completely made up by a poster to Tommy Dee's blog and RealGM. Here are the relevant threads:

Remember i made this trade up yesterday. And now it might happen.WOW

Knicks get BAYLESS, BATUM & CHARLOTTE'S LOTTERY PICK.

Blazers get LEE & FELTON.

Bobcats get OUTLAW, ROBERSON & 1 OR 2 SECOND ROUND PICK FROM NY.

This trade works financially, what do you think about it? That'd be great in my opinion and every team get what they actually need.

I remember David Aldridge saying that Knicks fan are just unrealstic. They would write him and ask him things like "why can't we get Shaq for Charlie Ward?" After reading this thread I'm realizing he was right. David Lee is a good player. Right now my second very Knick. But MVP. Can't trade him for anything less than a star and a lottery pick. That's more than what Iverson, Tmac, and Shaq got traded for.

David Lee has the potential to be pretty good. But you can't build a team around him because he can't create his own offense, has defensive liabilities, and hasn't been able to stay healthy. He looks lost on defensive switches, commits some terrible turnovers, and has trouble defending the post in one-on-one situations. He also is an awful shotblocker for a big (whether PF or C) when you consider he is a former slam dunk champ.

No doubt his positives outweigh his negatives, but for 10 mil a year that is costly for a role player. Gotta see the forest through the trees if you really want a championship team here.

As for trading Lee for Bayless, Campy, or Rodriguez, individually it makes no sense. But to be getting all three in one deal is a pretty good haul and when you throw in a 1st round pick that is a steal. We are 30 games removed from being a laughing stock franchise and yet, people are screaming to not trade anybody other than our bums, like people are lining up for Jeffries and Curry.

well put again K4L.. very well put

@Scott -- the trade that that guy bathja proposed was complete garbage.. I said so in the comments section.. But the concept of the Knicks getting Camby was and is very real..

IIRC the guy had some whacked combo's on that trade ..

Watching Eddy Curry again is going to make me want to vomit. He's the most heartless player I think I've ever seen. If he wasn't playing basketball, Curry would be living in some basement eating week old pizza, munching on chips, drinking beer and playing video games all day. There is chance this guy succeeds. He's been a bust his entire career. His best role would be a 15 mpg backup Center. I just hope Mike D'Antoni can work his magic and make this Rasputia lookalike play well enough that some dumb GM trades for him. Curry is a bum.

if RODRIGUEZ and BAYLESS are so good, how come they are buried behind the FUTURE-HALL-OF-FAMER-STEVE BLAKE?

have you guys actually seen OUTLAW play? trust me, he's not the answer. he's like the super-hot looking chick who just lays there in bed.

as for CAMBY, he is 34 years old, and yes, there is ample statistical proof that at that age nba players' production begin to precipitously decline. he will be of no value in 2 years (heck, he was only worth a 2nd round pick 3 months ago).

for those that are pining for FERNANDEZ, save your breath. if you think he is available, you are not following the league. he is a soon to be all star, and one of the cornerstones of what will be the next dominant team in the league.

so what of the blazers have to overpay for LEE if he would be the missing piece to their championship puzzle? i'll say it again: ODOM, ROY, FERNANDEZ, LEE, OUTLAW, BATUM, BLAKE, WEBSTER=FUTURE CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDER. no one will remember what they gave up in order to put this nucleus together, HISTORY IS WRITTEN BY THE WINNERS.

It wasn't very real. That Tommy guy is full of shhhh.

From today's Daily News......

According to Walsh, he is not looking to work out a three-way deal with Portland and the Clippers to bring Marcus Camby back, as has been reported. Although he acknowledged that he inquired about Camby in previous months, BEFORE he sent Zach Randolph and Mardy Collins to the Clippers in the Tim Thomas-Cuttino Mobley deal, Walsh said he has not been involved in talks lately for the former Knick.

"That stuff is made up," he said.
