Knicks announce deal; more in the works (UPDATE)

UPDATED: 4:30 p.m.:

Got word that the Zach Randolph-Mardy Collins for Cuttino Mobley-Tim Thomas scenario we reported here earlier in the day is going down....

That's $27 million in salary relief for 2010-11....

For those on Long Island, check out News12 tonight around 5:50 p.m. Your beloved bloghost is headed to the Newsday offices for a brief segment on the trades.

Tossin' the keys for now....

* * *

The Knicks a few minutes ago sent out an official release on the Harrington-for-Crawford swap. This is what Donnie Walsh had to say in a statement:

“I drafted Al back in 1998 and I think his talents are a great fit for our style of play. This trade also gives us more long-term flexibility while enabling us to remain competitive this season. To acquire a player of Al’s caliber, we had to give up someone we all really liked in Jamal. We thank him for his contributions both on and off the court, and we wish him all the best in Golden State.”

I heard from someone that the Knicks will have a press conference tomorrow at the Garden, before the game against the Wizards. Not sure if Al will be available for the game.

As for any more moves, I've heard from a few people that Donnie is working on another deal, but it probably won't get done today and, therefore, might take the weekend to get it done. It is believed Zach Randolph is the player the Knicks could move in this other scenario.

I'm getting mixed reports regarding the Clippers involvement. More than one source has said they are very much interested in Randolph and one other said they're not. The issue, I'm told, is the roster. The Clips don't want to take Zach while they still have Chris Kaman and Marcus Camby.

The Daily News has mentioned the Dallas Mavericks as a possible third team in this situation, though it's being shot down in the Big D. Disgruntled Jerry Stackhouse certainly works from a Knicks point of view because he can easily slide into Crawford's position and his contract is up in 2010. Perhaps the Mavs would be interested in bringing Kaman in to play alongside his Team Germany pal, Dirk Nowitzki?

Not sure the numbers really work there, but we're just bloggin at this point.

Check back here for Rod Boone's pregamer to get the latest on the scene in Milwaukee for tonight's game. I'm back here in New York wondering what happened to my day off. :)

And I gotta find a new blogger. Man, between Jamal and K-Berg, we lost two basketball bloggers in one day.

Well I guess I can deal with just the one trade for today but man it would have been nice if Donnie could have fixed everything for 2010 today.

Dude! I got your back! K-Berg even linked to me a few times @ www.breakindownthegame.com

What do you think about Z-Bo for Larry Hughes at this point...? I'm not a Hughes fan at all, but he fits the 2, and that sheds another 17Mil from 2010 books...???

How come the Daily news IS reporting the Clipper deal??

Alan man, What happened to K-berg?

...and i had a feeling this harrington thing would go down sooner or later... and you shot it down. hook me up with a shout out man... while you're at it, hook me up with a job.

Can i be the new blogger???? I'm serious lol. I would love that job, you guys have the best job in the world. Check out the blog I wrote today on the trade:

www.elitethatsme.com

that's what it is...the moves for 2010 begin...atleast we still got nate the great...here's something that might bring a smile to all the long knick faces out there: http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1859735478?bclid=1859720801&bctid=2454972001

DN saying the Z bo deal is done...

The LA papers are saying the deal is done also, whats the deal Alan.

Isola says Zero for Cat and Tiny Tim is done!!

Can one of you copy and paste cause I dont see it in DN

Thanx

Wow, that's amazing. 27 off the books in one day?!?!?! In Donnie We Trust!!!
http://breakindownthegame.blogspot.com/

DN hasn't retracted its claim and I haven't checked the LA papers, but I can't seem to find it anywhere else. I'm a bit confused. If ZBo's $17 million really is gone (although his production off the glass will be missed), I will dance on my desk before I go home...

Its a done deal, just not officially announced yet....................

http://www.theknicksblog.com/2008/11/21/done-deal/

This is incredible. Finally, the Knicks are going to get under the cap. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer!

Yup looks like we are getting Mobley and Tim Thomas as well. I like this deal a whole lot better now. I really wish we had some 1st round picks and I realize that the team is going to need time to gel but as John Q and Willis pointed out, now we can run between 8-10 guys out there every night. We are much deeper, maybe not better but much deeper.

If we care about the team before 2010 though, it is interesting to not that we didn't do anything to address our weaknesses. Mobley is not a huge upgrade in D over crawford and Harrington nor T. Thomas play much D or block shots. All three can space the floor though so we are really becoming the Suns, a team that doesn't play D but when hot can light it up.

Would Tim Thomas and Mobley play tonight? if not who's going to play form the knicks tonight?

Marbury....................for 1 night at least, you HAVE to dress 8 players per NBA rules. After the trades the Knicks will be short of that unless Marbury is actived for tonight.

Holy cow....imagine Walsh dealing Curry, Starbs, Q and James next week too......gimme oxygen! Any shooting gards out there?

DTR

Who would you think will start?

Chandler
Duhon
Lee
Q Rich
Roberson
Nate
Rose
Marbury

Jerome will play tonight. Hopefully he'll put up 20 and 10, and the Knicks will find someone to trade him to tomorrow.

terrible trade basketball wise....would like to think they could have done better than those 2 guys....its tough to swallow right now especially with them playing decent basketball. Our 2 best players traded in one day for the hope of something 2 years down the line....

Call Walsh 'The Don' from now on.

Today felt like the last scene of the Godfather. Just when you thought all was good, Donnie just wiped the slate clean. I wouldn't be surprised if I find out later that Marbury was forced into a revolving door and shot.

The knicks were not going anywhere with Zach and Crawford. Donnie Walsh played the ultimate hand bullshitting EVERYONE into thinking that crawford and Zach were awesome players. His poker face allowed us to clear cap space and a shot at a good player in this year's draft. Amen to the Don.

i think they have a shot to stay relatively competative this season too. they didn't lose that much when you really look at it, and chandler and nate have been off to breakout years.

thomas excelled under d'antoni before.

harrington is a better 3 point shooter and defender than either zach or crawford.

it will be tough, cause they were just starting to gel, but i think d'antoni can compete with this team.

The Knicks are finalizing a deal, their second of the day, that would send forward Zach Randolph and guard Mardy Collins to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for forward Tim Thomas and guard Cuttino Mobley. A conference call to go over the particulars of the deal with the league is being set up for later this afternoon. The Clippers may also be sending a future second-round pick to New York in the deal, according to a source

TNT analyst

Somehow I think there is more to this deal with the Clippers than is out there right now. It just doesn't add up. We dont have anyone that can reasonably play the center position. Is Harrington going to be our center?

And what about the Clippers? They now have Kaman, Camby, and Zac. What the?

I think Camby and Cat for Zac and Mardy made much more sense.

Sorry I have to say it again but this trade from a basketball perspective isn't as bad as some may think. We were not winning a championship or a top 7 seven team with Crawford and Zach. We still need a Center and a PG. But we were a 35 win team with Crawford and Zach. We are still a 32-35 win team but now we have significant cap space in 2010. Mobley, Duhon, Thomas, Chandler, and Harrington will not be specatular but they will get the job done. Q, can go to the bench like all of you want. Nate and Lee will give you major intensity off the bench.

Now the next step is becoming a competitive team by 2010. We need to bring in someone who knows how to draft and help us accumalte draft picks, i.e. we need to get a GM. Remember, this summer we were all saying these guys were impossible to trade. Now we only have one fat a$$ to go and Jeffires contract. They are already hyping up Jeffries like he is the next Marcus Camby or something so who knows, some sucker will bite. I really hope Donnie got a 1st round draft pick out of LA or GS.

they are dismantling my masterpiece.

my championship caliber team that I built with my handpicked brainless wonders is being imploded

Lauren: quick! more Lunesta pills

I guess Mobley is our shooting guard and 6-10 Thomas, Jeffries and Harrington our our centers. Wild! Ugly! Mediocre! Retreads! At least our D, speed and athleticism have improved a bit. Who is this team?

DTR

Mike Lupica:

"Randolph is not a player for a championship team, not in a million years. Crawford is not a player for a championship team. Nor is Stephon Marbury, nor is Eddy Curry. Right now, there are two players on the current roster you can see on a championship Knicks team someday:

Wilson Chandler, David Lee.

You've got Chandler for a while. You can re-sign Lee. The rest of them you can have. Some will go sooner rather than later."

ESPN.com is confirming both trades....So who will start on Tuesday? I say Lee, Harrington, Thomas, Richardson, and Duhon with Nate, Mobley, Chandler comig off the bench....or you can flip Thomas with Chandler at the SF spot...the team is bit a bigger with no true center...but at least we will be under the cap! Great going Donnie Walsh, the executive of the year!

Wow. That's a lot of deadwood in one day. And I thought rigor mortis set in with Walsh a while ago. Not too sure about those posters criticizing the deals "in basketball terms" - its not like he just dismantled the 1990's Bulls. Its just nice not to be the team taking the bloated contracts for losing or flawed players. No, this isn't a good looking team, but that's rebuilding - it's ugly. Its also necessary. And as a bonus, no more Mardy falling down and kind of tossing the ball to no one out of bounds! Now, for James, Curry, Q and Rose...

This is really senseless from the Clippers point of view, although if there's one thing any Knicks fan should be able to recognize, its bad GMing. Dunleavey orchestrated the palace coup that got rid of Baylor and was behind the Camby and Baron Davis deals, only to watch the whole thing blow up in a 2-9 start. So, like any bad GM, he flounders around to the tune of around 35 mil/year for the Zach/ Camby/Kaman trio. Oh well.

YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS

2010 is alive
with alittle Bulljive

Could have gottten more for Zach then Garbage.

Just hold on till Trading Deadline, even trade him over the summer.

Who is going to rebound?

Losing streak here we come....always one more year...this time 2 more years....

Couldve gotten more for Zach. How bout a defensive big, what about some draft picks...

Sucks

Who on earth was giving up a "defensive big" for Zach!?!?! I'm sure Andris Biedrins and Andrew Bynum were on trade watch. lol.

Check out the Clippers Blog - they are just ripping the trade for "Snacks" Randolph!

Who cares who rebounds on a losing team..

I want to praise the brilliance of Walsh and Coach D for making a plan and sticking to it masterfully. What a great job of ncreasing these bad players value early and shipping them out before they go back into the tank.

Today I am proud to be a fan of the Knicks

2010 is alive
Bulljive

Bulljive - that's the difference between a professional manager and a bad GM like Dunleavey (or a nameless former Knick) who has no plan and is just floundering around and throwing players into a mess. Now to see if Curry can also be increased.

Hi i just got home from work and saw the trades i am abigious about them. I really think we were a Cay like player away from being dominant but on the other hand we have tried the win now method before lets try starting over. So i will see exactly what we get and decide how i feel in a few days .

"Now to see if Curry can also be increased"

Pete Curry has been increasing for years, that is part of the problem!

This Marbury situation is beyond absurd. The Knicks would rather play a Developmental League player (Roberson) than play your most expensive contract.

Know it all fans

Zach for Tim Thomis and Mobley?

thats Bullshot. Watch these scrubs for 2 more years and beg LeBron to come here?

With what team to back him up.

Think Bron doesnt want a 20 and 12 guy next to him?

Coupla guys on this Blog shoot their mouths of constantly and the more you talk the dumber you sound.

Keepin it Ghetto Fake

a great day for the knicks.

harrington slides right into zachs spot, cutino into jamals, and thomas is obviously much more valuable than the dreaded mardy. throw 27mil cap space in 2010 into the deal, and this is the consumate fixer wet dream.

if donnie can dump fat curry, he has a lock on executive of the year, regardless of the final win-loss record.

Yep Pete I agree 100% I bet in a month Curry will be scoring and rebounding and fitting right in. Its obvious they have a plan for every long contract to come off the books and Eddy will be next..

Its a great day to be a Knicks fan

Patience and a PLAN! Donnie, you ROCK!! Mobley and Thomas are not exactly allstars but, like the Duhon signing, they'll keep us going till 2010.

Hey Alan what is the deal with Curry? Is his conditioning getting any better and are there any trade prospects for him?....on a sidenote Curry's theme song should be "Eddy You Should Know Better" by Curtis Mayfield....Just listening to it the other day, and every year when camp opens I think about that song and say "Damn, Eddy You Should Know Better than to keep coming into camp out of shape." He's gonna be next....Or so I hope.

Alan, with the cost cutting trades of today, do you think the Knicks shift the focus off of cutting salary and now focus on actually improving the roster? Do you think they would revisit a Curry for Wallace swap? They are already significantly under the cap so do you think Donnie is willing to just take what he can get? A starting lineup of Duhon Chandler Wallace Harrington and Jeffries or Lee...thats a athletic, versatile, and probably much better defensive team..

Out, thankfully, goes Break a Backboard Crawford.

Little Man Nate remains to lay bricks. Nate's chunked 11 of 14 heaves midway through the third quarter. As expected.

And regarding the departure of Fat Zach, what will the Newsday beat scribe do now that he can no longer get half-priced passes to strip clubs in Gary, Indiana?

A great day for Donnie Walsh, taking out Zeke's trash.

Left behind: Lazy Eddy, Fast Food James, Little Man Nate, and, of course, the always forgettable Coney Island Cupcake.

A good start, Donnie, but there's a lot more garbage to boot out of the Garden and bring respect back to the mecca of basketball.

roberson looks dreadful tonight.

Alan your blog censorship is out of control. Banks have less secure websites then newsday. Whats up with that? Are you scared of truth? Are we in the 4th Reich already? I thought it was gonna start in a couple of years from now. Damn!

Knicks are down by 20 to Bucks who are 2-8 on the season. Nice moves by Walsh, remind me of the TARP bailout. WEre F"KED until either Lebron or Jesus shows up, and don't count on Lebron.
