So why did the Rockets take Frederic Weis' rights from the Knicks just to remove Patrick Ewing, Jr. from the roster?

As we said here a few blogs back after Little Fella went to Houston as part of the Ron Artest trade, the Rockets had no intentions of including either Sean Singletary or Ewing, Jr. -- the two throw-ins in the trade -- in their roster plans. Singletary was traded to Phoenix for DJ Strawberry last week.weis.jpg

The Rockets could have waived Ewing, Jr., but Rockets GM Daryl Morey knew Donnie Walsh had an interest in acquiring him. So to avoid a (rather minor) salary cap hit for waiving Ewing, Morey agreed to a trade that worked for everyone.

It had to be a player or a draft pick to make the deal work. The Knicks could have surrendered a future second round pick, but with so few picks in the next two drafts, Walsh couldn't afford it. The only contract (half-guaranteed) that the Knicks own that is comparable is that of Anthony Roberson's, and the Knicks have plans for him. So...what about the rights to a player?

Hmmm...are there any players out there the Knicks still own the rights too?

Hmmm....

Ah-ha! Bonjour, Frederic!

Donnie provided the NBA with a good chuckle and kudos to Morey for playing along. Doesn't mean anything to them (aside from a little salary savings and clearing a roster spot). Just now the Rockets own the lifetime rights to one Freddie Weis.

Of course Vince Carter owns Weis for life, too. Nasty.

* - Just imagine the controversy right now if the Knicks wound up landing Monta Ellis in a sign-and-trade this summer. After locking up Ellis with a lucrative, long-term deal, the Warriors are now disturbed by the news that Ellis suffered a major ankle injury while working out at his home in Mississippi. My man Marcus Thompson III has the scoop on Golden State's skepticism that Ellis injured the ankle while working out. Glad I'm not in that circus, Marcus.

* - Starberman says Stephon Marbury has slimmed down to 200 pounds this summer. And here I recall being told by many of Stephon's loyalists that his weight was never an issue.

* - Speaking of weight, I think the Knicks get far more out of keeping Ewing, Jr. on the roster, even as the 15th man to wave towels and be the player the Garden faithful calls for in blowouts, than they do inking Jerome James' name on the inactive list 82 times this season.

* - I never like to delve into politics here (or anywhere) but I wrote on this blog a while back about Barack Obama's love and ability to play hoops. OK, I can dig it.sarahheathstatebb1982_1%5B1%5D.jpg

But wait, what's this? I'm already smitten with John McCain's VP choice -- she had me at "hockey mom" -- and further investigation reveals Sarah Palin starred on her high school basketball team back in the day. (That's her No. 22, on the right in a photo circulating around the internet....And, hey, don't sleep on Alaskan hoops. Just ask Carlos Boozer.)

So it's Nancy Pelosi meets Nancy Lieberman. Nice. They called her 'Sarah Barracuda.'

No comment on Palin. She'll be exposed (bad choice of words I'm sure) for all the corruption and scandals and bad energy policies she has done in her short tenure as governor of Alaska. Repub ticket is top heavy, with not much at the back, as is she.

We would have been better off bringing in Dorsey (as I think i was the first to call for) but Ewing, J.r. brings good karma back to the garden. I also watched him play at Georgetown and he has some potential My only question is . . .another SF.

Alan,

I have not been able to find any evidence that Ewing has a contract at all. I think he is unsigned which would make more sense, since Weis is also unsigned. Both draft picks would have $0 dollar trade value and would not count against the salary cap at all.

Furthermore, if Ewing is not signed on September 6th the team holding his rights must make him a tender offer according to Section XX of the CBA or he becomes a free agent and can negotiate with other teams. I guess your sources are telling you otherwise, but it seems to me that the Rockets could have just let September 6th pass without any loss or gain. I guess getting the Weiss draft pick was better than nothing and did direct Ewing to the Knicks. But it is also possible, though not likely at all, that Scola, Tony Parker and a couple of other Euroleague colleagues have suggested to Weiss that he should try the NBA at 31 before he gets too much older. I doubt it, but I write it so that there are no Palin type surprises down the road.

Also, “lifetime rights?” Is that under the prior CBA, because the rights to Weiss under the present CBA are not lifetime rights and are time sensitive.

I don't Know if PE, Jr will make the Knicks or if he does what kind of impact he will make. But it is good PR and Carma to have him try.

Palin may have played ball, but she is a poor choice for VP with little political experience, not to mention her big-oil ties and right-to-life vent.

Looks like McCain is trying to throw the election to Obama.

No chance Ewing doesn't make the team. Walsh is no fool, you don't bring in Ewing's kid and then cut him.

As for Palin - I too am a fan. She lives in Alaska, of course she's going to have ties to oil. It's like living in Wisconsin and having ties to cheese. And hey, of the four names on the ticket, she's the only one with any executive experience. Put another way, she's no more or less experienced than Obama, so if she's not qualified to be Veep then what does that say about Barack wanting the big chair in the round room?

Hey Chip, it is fine to like Palin, but your information is incorrect. She has the least experience of the four by far and even th most conservative amongst us are admitting that. Her so-called executive experience is incomplete and the quality of it by every measure is pure. Her ratings have been decreasing steadily in the state; most of the reporters indicate that her grasp of political issues is shallow; her record of management was underattack by the state legislators Republican and Democrat alike. Furthermore, she is under investigation for a barracuda of an unethical move in trying to help a family member by getting her sister's ex fired from his state job.

Her most redeeming qualities are the ones that attract solicitous comments from men. She's cute, outdoorsy and could probably beat Obama in a game of basketball.

To suggest that the quality of her experience makes her equivalent to the men on the tickets is like suggesting rotten cheese in Wisconsin is as good as fresh cheese in the other 40 states.

McCain should have picked Romney, Lieberman or Colin Powell if he wanted to win the race. Bad Advice. The Dems can walk through this race by treating her with kid gloves and letting her screw it up herself.

LGK

Of course that was 49 states. The "0" is too close to the "9" on my computer. LOL.

And the quality of her experience is "poor" not "pure."

i love you alan, but when it comes to women, sometimes you are, shall i say, a bit transparent. you should know better than to reference sarah palin in polite company.

for the record:

she does not believe that global warming endangers pandas (actually, she does not believe in global warming at all).

she believes that it appropriate that taxpayer dollars should be used to teach creationism in public schools.

you gotta be kidding. knowing these truths you can actually find something attractive about a person?

a more appropriate political reference in this blog might be to bring attention to michelle obama's brother craig robinson, a great player at princeton who is now the head basketball coach at oregon state.

there's nothing funny about giving face-time to a neo-fascist ideologue who, because of the intellectual vapidity of the republican party, is now being given the opportunity to possible be the commander-in-chief of the world's largest economy and military force.

In case you didn't notice, there has been a growing mountain of evidence that global warming is NOT man made. That's the key point. Everyone agrees that there has been mulitple periods in earth's history when the earth warmed or cooled (including the recent period of warming). It's WHY that matters!

Of course, anyone that never makes it past the biased brain dead reporting on the issue by the mainstream wouldn't know that. In fact, there is now some growing belief that we may be looking at a cooling period because the factors that REALLY caused the warming are beginning to reverse. LOL

What you have to understand is that politicians are all either brain dead, liars, or have an agenda. Many scientists are no different because they often depend on politicians for grants to continue their research. You have to look to truly independent sources and that's difficult task. Asking politicians and many scientists about this is about eqivalent to asking an oil executive, but in the opposite direction.

@Itallian Stallian
Please don't explain for me - I am perfectly capable of making an ass of myself without you. I believe there are many ppl that would prefer making asses of themslves than having you decide. Fact is, we suck as a country deciding on a big lection as we do regarding draft picks. Amazing huh? And as far as making an ass of yourself with your diatribe, Brazo

Marbury has reportedly dropped to 200 pounds.
(Is he finally serious about making the change?...Doubt it)

Knicks are still talking about sending Zach to Memphis.
(If the deal goes down...we will be under the cap for 2010)

5 players this year, I am dying to see play....Rooster, Ewing Jr, Roberson, Duhon and Chandler. We all know these players aren't going anywhere and we can watch them develop. They are Donnie's choices and I like them.

Picking up Junior and getting rid of Weis are moves that, while not monumental in terms of their impact, show that Walsh is thinking and is making an effort to create a positive atmosphere.
Even though it was on Layden's watch, getting rid of Weis was some very postitive symbolism. Catharsis.

Found it – USA Today and Hoopshype/Transactions. According to those sources, yes, Patrick Ewing, Jr. was signed by Sacramento to a non-guaranteed contract on July 9th. According to the report, the contract becomes guaranteed at the beginning of the season not on September 6th as reported by the Houston Chronicle. According to RealGm, the contract contains a team option, but RealGM also seems to have Junior confused with his dad regarding some info provided on the site. So the reports may not be totally accurate.

Based on everything I have read (including the CBA and Coon’s FAQ), it seems that Ewing actually has a “summer contract.” The “summer contract” does not count against team salary until the first day of the regular season. Right now the brother (Ewing Jr.) gets no salary, but he is entitled to a per diem, transportation costs and other compensation related to the summer league and training camp. But my reading of the CBA, and it seems pretty clear to me (Section 4(i)) states that the team must terminate the summer contract the day before the regular season begins, unless they have room for the contract.

So, it doesn’t seem that Houston would have had a cap issue at all since Ewing has no salary. And since Ewing, Jr. has no salary and Weis had not signed with the Knicks, the value traded was still $O, for purposes of team salary. Could the trade have benefitted Houston in some other way? I don't know.

What I don’t understand is why Hoopshype would report Ewing’s “summer contract” signing and not all the others.

@jim

Nothing personal, but when people come here saying things as if they are undisputed facts when they are NOT, I feel a responsibility to set the record straight.

The fact of the matter is that mainstream media cannot be trusted to report accurately partially because it has an agenda and partly out of ignorance. Politicians can't be trusted at all. And many scientists also have a political agenda because of their ties to government or other private entities.

The causes of global warming are still not known and may be reversing. Those are the facts.

@Lives - love your devotion to the CBA. What I reported in this blog comes straight from a high-ranking Houston Rockets official. Body-for-body or pick or rights had to be done in order to avoid a cap hit. It was likely a minimal one, but that's how it was explained to me.
But it's Labor Day weekend. Everyone enjoy it and we'll get back at it hardcore this week.

Alan, Thanks for the response.

I was so curious about the divergent reports that I thought about giving David Falk's office a call tomorrow, but then I checked DX Express (it's cheaper) which still has Ewing Jr. as a King, but shows Ewing with a two-year contract with the first year at $442,114 guaranteed and the notion of a small salary cap hit. See Falk's client list

That jibes with the statement of the Houston Rocket's execs, but it is very curious how so many sources report contrary info.

Yeah, the CBA helps distinguishes truth from fiction, because this business operates according to rules. I think with the guaranteed contract, Ewing is more likely to end up on someone's roster this year or at least become a free agent with cash in his pocket. Good for him.

Thanks for the response. Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

All "scholarship" aimed at undermining the world wide consensus on the man-made origins of global warming are the work of energy company funded think tanks. They are not engaged in reputable science any more than the 32 year old Bush appointee at NASA who forced NASA scientists to change their own findings on global warming was. There are wonderfully tarted up "reports" out there that are really nothing more than rhetorical attacks on years and years of diverse (in origin and discipline), responsible, deadly serious, science which proves that global warming is the result of greenhouse gases. It is of course true that climate change of the past is a fact of the geological record. There have been mini ice ages before, as well as interstadial warming periods during ice ages. None of that is what is happening now.

Skepticism is important in all things, but we must be skeptical of everything - not just of the findings that displease us. The sources of dissent on this science are not reputable. Does it mean that we shouldn't be skeptical because most people don't understand the question? No. Does it mean that we shouldn't be skeptical because the media, politicians, etc... have turned this question into another shallow, barking, fest. No. Does it mean that the conservative think tanks have worked long and hard to take advantage of basic ignorance, and have slowly built their fraudulent arguments (see: Evolution, Fact or Fiction?) on appropriate science-ey gobbledygook articles provided by kooks, cranks, and statisticians for hire? Unfortunately, yes.

Willis I wasn't even going to respond. To say that global warming is just another phase in the planet's evolution with no man-made factors involved is like saying the Knicks are financially responsible. It flies in the face of all logic and reasoning. Problem is if we took global warming seriously and allocated the necessary resources to stopping it, where would the money be for all the wars we have to fight. We have to get them before they get us!! Who? You know . . .them.

thank you WILLIS.

i wasn't going to engage this inanity further, ignorance makes my blood boil. fortunately, you have been able to frame the arguments in a thoughtful and polite manner.

40% of americans believe in creationism, including ms palin. thus they reject darwin's theory of evolution.

50% of americans do not believe that humans are contributing to global warming, including ms palin (and the italian stallion).

oy.

she also was a terrible sportscaster....

CYA! LOL

Sarah Palin is the choice of desperation> I'm sure that Iraq soldiers are happy that a woman who believes a holy war between Islam and Christianity will spur on the end of days and kill us all while saving the faithless like her. YES I said faithless, and hockey os no excuse

In case you didn't notice, there has been a growing mountain of evidence that global warming is NOT man made.

Really? A growing mountain?! From where, the White House?

The notion that a population can create heat and greenhouse gases that trap it and somehow not be responsible for abnormally intense heat buildup seems kinda moronic. "I can light a match, stick it under your finger and yet not be responsible for your finger being burned..."

Of course, Mr. Stallion could not be bothered to cite any of this "growing mountain" of evidence...go figure.

Mr. Stallion,

"May be reversing" is not a fact, but a supposition.
Where do you get this garbage from?
