If you include the impending signing of Chris Duhon to the full mid-level exception price of $5.585 million and Danilo Gallinari's first-year salary of $2,873,520 (correcting my previously reported figure), the Knicks have the NBA maximum 15 players under contract at a grand total of $99,449,770.
The NBA just announced that it's salary cap for the 2008-09 season will be $58,680,000. The luxury tax threshold is $71,150,000.
That means the Knicks, who will once again have the league's highest payroll, will pay $28,299,770 in luxury tax.
If Donnie Walsh ever does get this team under the cap, you have to wonder how much the rest of the league will suffer without all of that tax money they've enjoyed over the past 10 years.

Alan do you think that the clippers would be interested
in zach randolph?
he could replace Brand as power forward
i also i read that G.St would like to move Al Harrington
he plays power forward
do think G.St would take Zach?
Harrington would fit better in D'antoni's system and
his salary expires in 2010
just blogging....LoL
When that 21 Mil for Starbury goes the numbers can change.
Speaking of the little things (as in, the knicks improvement will be long term, and slow), a guy that could have been a piece, and cost us our 2nd round pick this year, Demetrius Nichols, is a summer league wonder again.
Speaking of second round pick, Chalmers is playing like the pont guard of the future for the Heat.
Shows you how important a "plan" is. And how unimportant excitement is.
Westbrook is looking very, very good apparently, deserving of the love Walsh had for him and the 4 pick.
And to spare all you sages out there the hunt and peck, yes it is only summer league.
I'm not a big trade machine guy, but this one worked: What about zbo and nate to the clips for tim thomas and cuttino mobley?
both thomas and mobley's contracts expire after next year.
It ain't my money
Just win baby
Never has a pro sports team paid so much...
...for so little.
Usually it takes the Federal goverment to waste this amount of money.
Alan,
Your last sentence got me thinking. Do you think that is a consideration for all the other teams when the Knicks try to deal with them? After all, it is in their team's interest not to make a deal with the Knicks and help them get under the luxury tax limit in the process. Could be one of the reasons why the Knicks find it difficult to make any 'sensible' deals.
