Duhon to Knicks

Chris Duhon will join the Knicks, a two-year deal for the full mid-level exception, according to a person familiar with the situation. Ken Berger has the story.

Comments (45)

Chris Duhon will make $6 million dollars a year and for what we had in Fred Jones at $3 million last season if you look at there numbers why would you want Chis Duhon for double the price of Fred Jones? Chris Duhon is a Maarty Collins clone in a smaller body if you dont believe look at there stats before speaking. Chris Duhon was able to start 18 games last season and through out his career has been given plenty of opportunity with starting while averaging about 40 starts a season and his numbers have always been similar every season as a starter.........Look at Duhon starting stats to Fred Jones

Duhon as a Starter:
30mpg
32% fg
28% 3pt
69% ft
1.1 steels
0 blockd
1.2 TO
1.5 rebounds
5.7 assist
6.5 ppg

Fred Jones as a Starter:
32mpg
43% fg
39% 3pt
77% ft
.88 steals
.12 blocks
1.3 TO
3.1 rebounds
3.2 assist
9.7 ppg

Chris Duhon assist are the only thing that sticks out but he ran the point and the fact that Fred Jones still averaged 3.2 assist while Jamaal ran the point says to me that maybe if he was given the chance to run the point maybe he would have dished out 6+ assist a game. I just don't see how you release a player and sign a player for double the value and all your getting is someone who is a down grade in every aspect except for his assist numbers but I guess that's New York for you do I have to mention James, Richardson, or Jeffries

Chris Anderson and Arroyo (combined) could probably have been had for the same money.

Not bad, but not a starter...

well it is start...

now we need to make some trades.

I don't think he's is a great player. But, a good average player. The Knicks think they could make this kid a winner. I say he has better upside then most point guards we already have but he still is a huge question mark. The only positive is he won't kill our cap strategy and if he does help us win then gravy. I say a modest improvement.

@Bobby - Was wondering if looking at Jones vs. Duhon from a 48 minute perspective might change your mind.

Jones:
PPG: 9.6
-- FG%: .375
-- 3FG%: .286
APG: 2.1
RPG: 3.8

Duhon:
PPG: 13.7
-- FG%: .401
-- 3FG%: .356
APG: 7.7
RPG: 4.3

Hoopsstats.com has Jones with an efficiance rating of 9.2 and Duhon at 17.1. I'm thinking, using only the mid-level exception, Duhon isn't a bad choice.

Change...... That's a good thing....underachiver makes good
in NY....the last similar headlines were for BK!!!!!!!!
Imagine this Guard takes the BK path????? Only in his God given spot???????

The FULL mid-level!?

if more duhon equas less marbaby, this is money well spent.

madison square garden without isaah and stephony: priceless.

good defender good buy at least he will look to pass the ball now let's loose z bo and we should use steph for his final season i am sure he will try to impress

I think this is a very good move as long has marbury goes away

Excellent move by the Knicks....
Marbury will be gone and then we can focus on Ellis.
Hopefully the personal relationship between Mullin and Walsh will mean something. Maybe Mullin can act like McHale and Walsh can be Ainge. Give us a present!!!
I don't know if I like the idea of Jamal and Ellis on the same team unless one of them agrees 100% to come off the bench. Since Ellis is a better player than Jamal, I can't see Ellis coming off the pine.
I don't think Randolph will make it to the opening game. I do think Curry will....Dantoni thinks he can do something with Curry.
Nate and Chandler should flourish in this system.
There is no way to predict what we're going to do so we just have to wait and see. At least we know that our ownership and our coach are on the same page. We haven't seen that around here in a long time.

if d'antoni likes, i like.

have faith, my fixer friends.

I think Duhon is a true pt guard who deserves a chance. Jones is not and is erratic. Jones is no replacement point guard. Duhon as trained as one at Duke and excelled.

Dave-the-Rave

It's addition by subtraction (headcase MuckBury out!)

Nothing spectacular about Duhon but he is an improvement over Isiah's chosen few in the backcourt

I'm hoping Charlie Rosen (FOX) has it right: "Duhon takes care of the ball, has terrific court-awareness, is unselfish, and plays above-average defense. His perimeter shooting has always been questionable but has greatly improved as of late. Plus, the more shots he attempts (as befitting a starter) the better his accuracy will be."

K..............Are you a young kid or just a really big or should I say Huge Chris Duhon fan? First if your going to put up per 48 minutes per game stats there is no way stats get lower they all go up so I dont know how you made Chris Duhon's stats double and Fred Jones lower by double. Second there is one thing that never changes in a regular stat to a per 48 minute stat and that's shooting percentage so how did you come up with the fact that Freddy's dropped and Duhons went up.........As for efficiency rating that has nothing to do with a player it has everything to do with the team plus you got it all wrong there as well........Fred Jones is +8.20 and Chris Duhon is +7.83. So stop trying to make Duhon look better then he is

That it the trade I proposed between the Knicks, Lakers, and Kings

By Acquiring Odom, and Mihm we shave 61.9% of the team's salary cap by next year, Lee will not have to be resigned by the Knicks for a number that will cut into Walsh's 2010 scenario- rainbows up our asses and all.

Absent the trade Jefferies and Z-Bo's contracts at 70.5% of the cap will run past 2010, and of course Lee will continue to hold the hammer over the organization.

My opinion as a fan is that D'antoni and Walsh may continue to talk about an engine to make a team run.

BUT...

An engine can't run w/o sparkplugs, pistons etc. etc., all those intangible components that set the point gaurd up for the much ballyhooed fast break.

That is why any trade scenario for Lee or Z-Bo must return to the Knicks a servicable powerfoward 4/5 guy to secure the rebounds and keep scoring opportunities alive for the team to score and run the D'antoni fastbreak.

Anything else in trade is just bunk!

I'M BACK
WHAT I SAID
WE WILL FINDOUT IF WALSH IS A WHITE ZEKE

LMAO THE KNICKS WILL ALWAYZ BE THE LUAGHING STOCK OF THE NBA..

The best News/Rumor this Year;

Source: NY Times

People with close ties to Donnie Walsh, the team president, and Coach Mike D’Antoni consider Marbury’s departure a near certainty.

Those briefed on the matter spoke anonymously because the discussions were private, and because the subject has apparently not been broached with Marbury.

But the Knicks’ intentions were evident in their recruiting of Duhon. As part of his sales pitch, Walsh all but offered him the job as starting point guard.

Awesome news, Peaceman! Thanks!

DTR

Visualize this, dudes:

It's clear that change is in the air, finally. The first step is to clear out all of the rotten garbage that his been stinking up the garden. Get rid of Marbury (any way they can).

I don't care if Duhon can play or not. He's probably just a placeholder for the eventual starter, but he's not Marbury. Get rid of the bums first, and rebuild the right way.

If the Knicks are in the Lottery for the next year or two all the better. We need to be at the top of the draft (1 or 2) and get a real superstar. Until then, slowly weed out the Eddie Currys and the Zach Randolphs. If Lee is your only trading option, so be it as long you get something that is a building block for this crumbling franchise.

Donny's taking baby steps now and that's good.

Amen to that.

Don't they still have to give up a #1 to Chicago?

DTR

JUST DUHON TO MARBURY AS HE DO UNTO OTHERS?
Classic! LMAO!!!!!!

Drinking alot of that July 4th juice huh Peace?

To Dave the Rave no the answer to your question. The draft pick goes to Utah via the Marbury trade. On 2010 we wont have a #1 pick. Thanks to another great move By Isiah. The man traded 3 #1 draft pick and he still has a job. 2 draft picks to get Cury and the one in 2010 to get Marbury.

I want to express something, and I'm wondering if anyone else feels the same way.

I really want the Knicks to keep David Lee, for the following reason:

When the Knicks finally do turn this thing around and become one of the elite teams again, I want there to be at least one player that can say he was there during the dark years, and has made it through to the days of glory.

Of all the players on the current Knicks roster, Lee is the one player I feel that has most represented the fans' hopes for a return to glory, or at least respectibility.

If not a single of these players remain when the day comes that we are again considered contenders, then I cant help but feel like there will be little bit of an empty feeling.

If nothing else, it will make the dark days seem even darker.

Anyone else agree? Alan?

Look. I understand the Knicks should let Marbury go. But he's the only kNick I like. I can't stand those bums. When JvGundy Left and Al Hou had to leave, I mean, Marbury is star quality. I cant stand seeing Marbury take the fall for a guy like Curry or Crawford, not winning players either, and Isiah did this to us. Look at how he ran toronto into the ground, or Indiana. Don't blame marbury. he's the only good player on the team, I'm serious. I'm sure you wanna blame him for the losing but why just him. Isn't it curry not blocking shots? Crawford not defending Q not hitting his shot and his back hurts. J.James doesnt' even play, Jeffries can dribble and defend but cant score. Why should Marbury have to leave when he's the only all star on the team? Strange NY fans. The Yankees are finished now, after 10 years of holding on, is time now to cut Jeter? NY fans are funny, Yankees haven't even gotten out of the first round last couple of years. Get rid of Jeter! hahahahahaha just trying to prove a point. Leave my dude Marbury alone.

The big difference between the Duhon signing and other recent Knicks mid-level blunders is the length of the contract. Its a 2 year deal. If he turns out to be another JJ, at least he won't be around year after year stinking up the Garden and drawing a paycheck.

No one expects Duhon to be the long-term answer. The Knicks have been crappy for so long that any real turnaround will take a couple of seasons (unless they get a Garnett-type gift). I see Duhon as a competent Charlie Ward/Eric Snow level point guard with no delusions of superstardom who will allow management to begin breaking with the recent past. Love him or hate him, Marbury is so strongly associated with the Knicks of the last few seasons, that Walsh and friends probably that he has to go if there is to be any sort of clean break.
Personally I would keep Marbury this season (and I am far from a Marbury fan) - its a contract year, so you know he'll play well (bumping his value if Walsh wants to trade him), and I like the idea of 20+ million coming off the Knicks cap at the end of the year.

http://www.realgm.com/src_tradechecker/4/

check the trade. It will work for 3 reasons.
1.D wade does not want to play the point so by them gettin jamal wade doesnt need to play point.
2.Riley knows that marion will leave and that a trade for brand and boozer is unlikly.
3.Riley wasnt that high on beasly form begining.
4. Riley gets the post player he wants person who could give 20 and 10 and a solid scorer to help wade in crawford and other peices that make deal work and get rid of blount.

This deal would be great for both franchises becaues now the knicks will have about 47 million in expiring contracts next year from marbury 22 mill, marion 18 mill, and rose 7 mill. that will bring them under cap significantly. and blounts contract will run up after 2010 season and we also get two good young players in cook and beasly.
And lets say then we buyout marbury and jerome james then sign telfair to the veterns minimum for one year our lineup for next season looks like this.
PG:Duhon/Telfair
SG:Q Rich/Cook
SF:MArion/Gallanari
PF:Beasly/Lee?Gallinari
C:Curry/Lee
this would be a team that realisticly has a shot at winning 40 games and gettin into the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed . Thyen we let marion walk once season is done and get some pieces that wont hurt our cap room much and then get an superstar like lebron or wade in 2010.

uh kishan...riley is not a moron.

Co-sign ...Riley is not a Moron, however........

Heat Dangling Marion For Elite Point Guard?
With point guards getting scooped up via free agency, it is becoming more and more likely that the Heat will have to deal Shawn Marion if they want an elite playmaker, according to HoopsWorld.

Targets could include Andre Miller, Kirk Hinrich or Monta Ellis.

As unlikely as it may be...Marbury the player is an Elite PG..lets forget about
Marbury the person for a moment! Of all the people in the NBA ...Marbury cannot pull his Bull on Riley! With this being Marbury's final contract year...Maybe Riley might take the Gamble for on year and give us Marion now that Beasley is in Miami?
Far fetched but you never know?

A fan of Artest

I was thrilled when Artest decided to forego free agency and stay with the Kings. It's a little unsettling to know he still a could be traded. I believe that coach Reggie Theus built a strong foundation last season and there is much to build on for the upcoming season. Trading Mike Bibby and the draft has really given the Kings an edge. With Artest healthy, he is capable of leading this team to the playoffs and beyond. When the Kings first came to Sacramento, I felt they did too much to try to fix losses – trading players, firing and hiring coaches without giving them much of a chance. If the Kings trade Artest, with what Theus did last season, it would be taking the team back 25 years. So, to the Maloofs, please keep Artest and let Theus show what he can do.

– Cindy Capellas, Sacramento

some comments from King fans..... I agree..ship him to NY..

anyone know the summer league roster?

I looked at the possible free agents for 2010 and if it stays that way, oh boy! That free agents class will be soo deep, i dont think walsh is holding his breath for lebron or wade or bosh (yes they would be a welcome surprise). If the knicks trade Zach and jefferies for expiring contratcs, and if Crawford and curry opt out next season ( This is if they have a good seasn) then the knicks will be up to 45 mil under the cap and about 5 players under contract. There are players that will be good and still young that we could sign not named Lebron or wade or bosh, such as Joe Johnson 29, Amare Stoudamire 27, Lamarcus Aldridge 24. Those are just a few guys i would go after but there are alot more thats possibly available. The knicks aould be so far under the cap that they can sign those three players. After seeing the FA list for 2010 i say im all in for the 2010 plan cuase we arent waiting and hoping Lebron will come save us, we will have ALOT to choose, FA’s that can make an impact and lead this franchise!

@Bobby - My age, size, sex, religion, etc. have nothing to do with the stats in my comment. Try checking out hoopsstats.com before attempting to make me out to be a liar or a Duhon fanboy. When you're ready, I'll be more than willing to have an intelligent conversation.

@Pete - Couldn't have said it better myself. The only thing I would add is, why not keep Marbury on the team through training camp. The Knicks can waive him at any point in time. Let's see how he handles the situation through the first month or two. At the first sign things aren't working out for whatever reason, waive him. Maybe we'll get lucky and he'll work his way through a solid season.

Morris At Boston's Free Agent Minicamp

Jul 06, 2008 1:43 PM EST
Randolph Morris landed with the Celtics in last week’s rookie and free agent minicamp.

Morris played sparingly with the New York Knicks last season.

“It was hard because you had to try and find different ways to get noticed,” Morris said. “But when I did get the chance, I had to live up to my potential, and that didn’t happen."

“But there’s no question it was tough there. The first thing you wanted to deal with was the question of helping the team in some way. But there were only spotty minutes in practice for guys like me, and that should have been the time when they were trying to develop their young guys.”

Well I am glad to hear Marbury is almost out of town.. finally.

Here are a couple trades that actually gain us #1 picks, using Marbury, without adding salary for 2010. Click to View Marbury Trades

Amare or Dwayne wouldn't be bad either

@ Willis - Look at that great Knicks list of Unrestricted FAs in 2009!!

Almost all the bad deals gone...we only have to wait for Jeffried in 2010.
