Frozen in Time: The 1985 NBA Draft Lottery

The infamous, inaugural NBA Draft lottery, which was the first and only won by the Knicks, who earned the right to draft Patrick Ewing. It goes with our story in the Sunday Newsday about the draft lottery.

Fixers, the Knicks have been regular participants in the lottery since that 14-year playoff run ended in 2002. And the past two seasons -- when the Chicago Bulls had the rights to the pick as part of the Eddy Curry trade -- you might have only watched with morbid curiosity. The Knicks didn't win, but they had the No. 2 overall choice in 2006 -- their highest finish since '85 -- and the Bulls took that pick to select LaMarcus Aldridge.

That 1985 lottery was a desperate time for the Knicks and they are now. Though there is no Ewing in the draft, there is a player whom the Knicks feel fits the Mike D'Antoni system and could fill a spot for the next decade: Memphis point guard Derrick Rose.

So, the question is, how does David Stern rig it this year?

i wish stern can influence the lottery in favor of the knicks... lol
NYknicks really need a help from the outside of the organization.
what a mess zeke have done. but there's no time to finger point right now. we need a solution.. who is our next GM? go knicks!

Mike said that Curry and Marbury have been forced to go away from what they are good at. He also said Isiah told him that he was going to run Phoenix offense and then traded for Zach Randolph.

Good thing that I entered a security code, now no one will be able to buy multiple tickets when they go onsale..... wait you don't sell tix here... So your just jerking us around.. Ok OK

freeze it again!

More Heilium in the Knicks Ping Pong Balls!

Rig it for the 2nd pick

I think Nate Robinson is soooo cute!!!

Isiah must STAY!!!

Alan

You made my day by posting the lottery clip. I remember sitting in my basement looking at the lottery on our old black and white TV that I thought might be lucky. I had been so nervous all morning that my visiting in-laws - no big sports fans - came down to the basement to give support. I am passing the URL along to my son and daughter - 7 and 4 at the time - to get them ready for Tuesday.

deBusschere summed it up with that great understatement - "Sometimes you catch a break." It sure would be nice to catch a second one.

I'm of two minds on the lottery. On the one hand, the Knicks are way overdue for some luck and karma should lead them to the first or second pick.

On the other hand, they are a star crossed franchise, and thus I could see them falling to six or seven.

I too remember the Ewing lottery, and how exciting it was to win that! As soon as they opened the ticket windows, I bought Knick season tickets anticipating a championship. I'm still a season ticket holder and I'm still waiting.

I still think this is a deep draft and if you are looking for a point guard - guard depot. 1-5 and we still win. Rose or Beasley are possible 1 and 2. But, I think you can go deep and still come away with a special player.

D'Antoni should bring that Horse Shoe that Dave D was
holding in 1985!!!!!

Alan,

Now with this coach in place are you going to start cheering for that PG of yours Ty Lawson again? He could be a late 1st to 2nd round pick.

kind of reminds you of what the great Knick Pat Ewing meant to this town! The 90's knicks were such an embodiment of this city and an easy team to back and love...

Freeze the ping-pong balls!
Follow the master plan Mr. Stern.

Catching up on my WSJ reading…
* News Corp owns NY Post. They bid $ 580 mil. for Newsday but the Dolan Empire won with their bid of $ 650 mil.
Had the News Corp won the bidding, Peter Vecsey, Bubbles Vermin, Ken Berger, and Alan Hahn would’ve been teammate

* imagine, their paychecks coming from the same parent corp. Alan, if guys go out drinking, watch your wallets when PVecsey is around

The Knicks need a top 2 pick more than any other team in the league and every other GM in the NBA can agree with me on that. That being said, Stern never rigged anything in 1985 and wont rig anything now. I believe we will remain at 5 or move down because we have no luck with those things.

What I find kinda scary is that all that were in that 85 draft are in this years draft except the Hawks.

Hey Alan...big fan. Can you get someone to check out that broken link to Sunday's story? Thanks.

Alan no offense guy but you have to quit doing those links like that. Can't see them.

Also peaceman is a straight up lunatic.

Hopefully Big Brown's owners who are from New York can offer one of his horse shoes...So Alan call them up and ask to donate one.

But first answer this question for me..

Why doesn't anyone say that the lottery is rigged when Orlando won the lottery 3 times and in 92 and 93 back to back years, and one of those year it was Shaq. Also Cleveland has won twice including Lebron James, The Clippers twice.
Why do New York sports writers alway have this conspiracy theory when it comes to New York??????
Look at Pittsburgh of the NHL they have had the first or 2nd overall pick about 5 times before the 2006 draft...I think that's more likely to be rigged and 4 super superstars in the last decade.
Mario Lemieux, jagr, crosby and now malkin

so i guess dantoni is gonna be the knicks coach for life for rose fits in perfect...lmao...
how are u gonna be a g.m an not go with the best player available here we go an the knicks f-cked up again..
i guess the only good pick the knicks eva going to make is ewing.

lmao.like ive said b4 people got jobs an i be wondering how did they get the job
itz like u got a chance at a million dollars an u gonna try harder for a 100000 grand..

rose aint gonna help no nba team anytime soon an if he proves me wrong more power to him..media overrated/alot of dumb people.

the knicks are going to keep doing dumb ish until i'm the g.m

trading/buyout marbury would just add insult to what the knicks been doing for years.

with a good caoch/assistantz your team will be good regardless of who u have playing for u..itz how u push them an what u say.an zeke wasn't saying ish your dealing with grown men not kids...

You don't win without good players, knowledge. (Might be time to drop that name, by the way.) A few years ago Kobe's Lakers, with Phil Jackson (doesn't he stink as a coach? Just terrible) posted a losing season and missed the playoffs. Now that they have Gasol and Fisher and a slightly more seasoned bench, they're contenders. Or wait, did Jackson suddenly re-learn how to coach again, a few years after his third three-peat?

Rose has every appearance of being a very good NBA point guard. The guy's big, athletic and he sees the floor. It's asking too much that he'd make a huge first-year difference. Point guard is the most important, and most difficult, position in the game. Chris Paul and Deron Williams each had their problems as rookies (especially Williams).

But this is all academic before we know what the lottery brings.

they still made the playoffz.
they just needed a few more pieces.
if u read i said team will be good with any players never said win the chips..

rose aint the pic
beasley is but hey they can pic rose.lol.

i'll findout how smart walsh is when late june comes..

an when u pic a guy u gotta believe in him don't sit him an give him junk time let him learn in realtime but alot of teams don't do that an the 1z that do the player becomes good or great...

i would love to say letz go knicks but i'll give it until 2009...

rose aint good he over hyped

stay tuned for more KnowLedge

this has been shown several times on this great blog, but when I read "rose aint good," I think this is worth reposting. there are just high school highlights, mind you.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=w6G_RRGHzfA

played one year of college, made it to the championship tournament with a good team. not saying beasley isn't the man, or that rose isn't the man, but the knicks could benefit from either. and i think mike d would be happy with either, except of course there are certain needs the knicks could benefit from addressing right away, and as that sellout larry brown would be the first to tell you, the knicks clearly need a point guard to run the show and get the team in the flow.

Ok! Let's go! Here we go! Let's go!

lmao@i guess we really looking at kbl kidz basketball league
when u need 1 or everything else suck
the money these guys make should automactically make them play good..
that postion ish in the kbl is over blown..parker aint that good
phil jackson never added a p.g to win anything.

once again knicks need a bornstar born winner
not som1 that hyped up..

2 coaches fucked up starburyz head l.b an zeke..u could hate marbury all u want but when marbury got his head rite he is the best p.g out there..2bad he lost his head/tryna find it..

if u aint got self leadership then your an idiot a waste of life.
itz a team game not or we need this to be good all that is over blown...

stay tuned for more KnowLedge

lol you're saying that based on what, what starbury did during georgia tech and years prior? career stats dont mean you can take your team into the playoffs and succeed. show me more than a handful of guys that have loved playing with him, show me a handful of guys that have improved their game with him at the point.

and you seriously think point guard isn't a very important position under mike d'antoni's system?

i've been a fan of stephon's in the past, but even he said recently he understands that he may need to go for the team to improve. if he can't get his head straight the past two or four or ten years, how much time do you give the guy? Answer: the trading deadline.

and maybe starbury fcked up his own head, maybe just a little, he's 31 and should be held accountable for his actions instead of making excuses for the cat. matter of fact I think his sneaker deal fcked up his head just as much as larry brown did or anything else. and as I write this I'm wearing his sneakers so labels like "hater" certainly do deserve a lol.

as a fan i cheered for him every year he's been here but lets face it the years he's been here have been marked with being a lottery team on the court and all kinds of negative publicity off the court.

i can't speak for you or anyone else but some of us are sick of being a lottery team year after year.

@therecord,

I love your Mother! She's like a Hoover!

2005-4, knowledge, LA went 34-48 and did not make the playoffs. They didn't make the playoffz either. And they sure did need a few more pieces...like five or six.

I like Beasley's lack of work ethic a whole lot less than any questions about Rose running the point. A good point guard is especially important in D'Antoni's system. An athletic big man is second-most important.

2004-5. Dyslexic moment.

(Because if you haven't noticed, knowless--and it seems you haven't--Phoenix' 7-seconds-or-less offense under D'Antoni is slightly different from the triangle which Jackson's been using since before his Chicago days. You're right about one thing: the triangle doesn't need a point guard. But D'Antoni won't be running the triangle in New York.

The triangle offense, look it up in Wikipedia (it's there). Then you'll actually gain some basketball knowledge, for once.

i'm a baller been playing ball a longtime in nyc
knows the game better than most

lmao@ tryna tell me about phil jackson
phil wasn't the coach 2004-05 it was rudy who was 24-19 b4 resigning..phil came back to take them to the playoffz very eyar after coach is very important/key players...dumbasses.learn b4 u come at
dagawd like u know better than me...

as a g.m u gotta go with the best players available an itz obvious if beasley is on the boards gotta go with him...or u can go with a back up p.g name rose an try to make him the franchise.p.g...lmao....

i can tell alot of yall are countryboyz...

KNICKSDEFENSE:
Was that you @ Berman's blog?
That was a pleasant surprise. Hope that all is well on your side and that your site is alive & kicking.
I can see that "TAZ" is causing havoc here and continues to infect this place.

Watch out, the profanities are coming my way..... 3.. 2.. 1.

Hope that DSterns "arrange" for the NYK to get the first pick - LOL

* just blogging

early speculation, but what do you guys think about what the knicks should do if they get a pick that's between 3 and 6?

i think they should trade down a few spots to get augustin, and grab another pick in the draft.

they need a true PG.

Matt B.,

I agree with your assessment regarding the need for a true pg. However, with picks 3 - 6, you don't trade down.....you get the best player available, taking into account your needs.

If we don't get either of the top two picks, Bayliss or Love would be my choice, possibly the kid from Indiana. I'd steer clear away from the Mayo........he's steph on steriods....in all ways.

Bronxboy - I'd usually agree with the idea of drafting the best available, but I'm not sure that that's so clear in this year's draft after the first two spots. Are Bayliss or Love that much better prospects than Augustin?

I don't follow college hoops that much, but from what I've read, I don't think they are.

And specifically with Love, having seen him play, I don't know if he's quick enough for D'Antoni's system.

If the Knicks don't land 1 or 2, I really think they should consider packaging the pick with Randolph, if possible, and trade down.

I don't like Love, because he's barely athletic enough to get by in the NBA. Bogut's a good passer too, but he's not much of a factor for Milwaukee. I think the Lopez brothers are kind of the same. They're all role players at best, not lottery picks. You can get role players through free agency, so it might be better, if you can't trade a 3-8 pick, to reach for someone with a little more risk/reward.

And being a YMCA player doesn't mean you know a lot about hoops, knowless. You're not the only one who's played lots of pickup for a long time. Nobody questions you need good players, but how players fit together, and whether guys work hard, counts too. Shaq & Kobe, if they'd wanted to play together, might've gotten a fourth championship against Detroit (though it would've been tough, because Detroit was easily the best team the'd met in the Finals). But the two best players didn't cooperate, and they got run off the floor. Next year, without Shaq, the Lakers were out of the playoffs. I guess you think Rudy T is a terrible coach? He only won two championships, that's all. More than anybody's won here in NY for a long time.

PICKS ARE IN!!!!!!!!!!! Inside source indicate the Knicks have landed a top three pick! I am absolutely ecstatic right now. I can't say what pick. He just knows it created a stir and it's about the Knicks. I just wonder what they will go for. Also we dont know what combination the teams are in. But if get the first pick!!!!!!!! Alan Hahn might be important again. hahaha just kidding. can't wait for tonight yall. You better be watching.

picks are live, dude. stop trying to jinx it.

Matt B,

Love may be exposed a bit in the Knicks' new system, but there's alot to be said about a kid's b-ball IQ, and his is off the charts. Not to mention he's compared to HOF'er Wes Unseld......now surely there's a place on any squad for a stud like that, because at some point the game is played in the paint.

D'Antoni hasn't won anything with his current philosophy, so I don't think you can pass on this kid.

I love Augustine, but I don't know if he's a lotto pick....but if we could somehow in position to get a pick in the 10 - 15 spot.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Draft_Lottery

they could be doing the drawing right now according to that.

but yeah, I agree, stop trying to jinx it!

MAKUNAT

yeah that was me trying to make the rounds. i rarely post there.

Where's Alan?

isiah thomas is a little niglet. Lets face it theres no hope with a nigga in charge!

Crap; pick number 6

I hate Chicago.

lunatic Peaceman jinxed our pick. CRAP!!!

D'antoni may elect to go with the Italian kid at 6.

Bayless or Eric Gordon or the Italian dude.

Peace gave us bad luck.
Peaceman must go!!!

Bayless probably won't be there at 6.

A shoot first, pass second guard is not what is needed.

Ouch, 6th pick.....
Well, I'm sure we can get someone of value, someone who can help at 6th.

Dang Isiah!!!
He screwed around with our chances.
Isiah messed us up again.

Instant karma for Mike D’Antoni dissing Chicago. I’m so depressed and disappointed. There is nobody they can get at 6 that will help them. They desperately needed a franchise changing talent. Eric Gordon, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love are not that good. Trade the pick with David Lee and Malik Rose’s expiring contract for a young player like Carmelo Anthony.

"Dang Isiah!!!
He screwed around with our chances.
Isiah messed us up again."

He sure did, didn't he?

Yeah Blame me! I made a deal with Stern that if Mark Jackson didn't become our coach we'd take 6TH!
I'm Guilty! Let me tell you the story of Wally PEP.......

Its either the Italian kid or Love.

I don't know nothing about the italian kid, I'll leave that to D'Antoni and Walsh, but Love is the value at this spot. Eff the undersized shooting guards, unless they run the point, we can get any of them three years out after they've failed at whatever they think they are doing. All the other bigs available don't know how to play, for D'Antoni's system, Love is the guy. Can shoot it, rebound it and send it out on the break, and he can post it. He's got the smarts and the toughness and he did everything he did last year as a freshman, with a baby huey body, and just having fun. After the camps this summer, I hope he's there at 6.

and we need more picks and Dorsey.

now every p.g at 6 an up are backupz or mayb not even nba type players
go with the best player available at 6

thatz forreal karma rite there for going for the money now they should pick rose he from chitown
heat getting beasley
knicks better not pick that italian
i bet they gonna pick him..

well the knicks if anything trade for a good player that some teams wonna trade not to move up in the draft.

that lottery draft is bull

stay tuned for more KnowLedge

fck david stern....
@ miguel rodgriguez watch yo mouth mutha fcka...
not in tha mood 4 no bullsh*t...real talk !! we can do this dawg...

I'm so bummed out.

Trade the pick. Package it with Randolph or another bad contract.

Please don't draft Mayo.

Maybe we can talk about how bad everyone other than Rose and Beasley are until they get a nobody-believed-in-me chip on their shoulders, and we can turn whoever we get into a stud.

Please god, no OJ Mayo.

Just when you think Isiah can't hurt this team any more something like this happens.
