The Yankees (50-34) enter the finale of a series in a position to sweep for a fourth consecutive time this afternoon in a 1:10 game at the Metrodome.

Alfredo Aceves makes his first start of the season for the Yanks. Aceves (5-1, 2.02) has been stellar out of the bullpen, particularly of late: his ERA has dropped every outing from June 13 on, and he earned a save his last time out with four innings of one-hit ball in a 10-8 win over Toronto on July 5.

Against both the league and the Twins, the Yankees are rolling: they haven't dropped any of six games to MInnesota this year, and have won 12 of 14 overall.

The talented but struggling Francisco Liriano (4-8, 5.49) pitches for the Twins. Liriano held the Yankees to one run on four hits in his only career start against them, earlier this year on May 15 at Yankee Stadium, a game the Yanks won 5-4.

After sweeping the Mets on June 26 to 28, the Yanks entered the finale of their series with Seattle and then Toronto (four games) able to sweep but lost both times.

Marcus Henry here to take you through today's game.

Francisco Liriano's wildness helps Yanks. Alex Rodriguez walked. Rodriguez stole second. Posada was hit by a pitch. Robinson Cano reached on an error. Melky Cabrera flied out to right. Ransom worked a walk, scoring Rodriguez. Gardner hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Posada. Jeter followed with a single to right, scoring Cano. Gardner was thrown out on a double steal, ending the inning. Yankees 3, Twins 0 - Middle of 2nd.

Yanks give two back on a homer and some sloppy fielding. Jason kubel homered to straight away center. Michael Cuddyer walked. Cuddyer advanced to second on a bad throw to first by Aceves. Brian Buscher popped up to short. Mike Redmond reached on a throwing error by Ransom, which allowed Cuddyer to score. Redmond advanced to second. Nick Punto grounded out to second. Denard Span struck out swinging to end the inning. Yankees 3, Twins 2 - End of 2nd.

Easy inning for Liriano, who may have settled down. Swisher popped out to first. Hinske can play 3rd. Teixeira struck out. Rodriguez grounded out to second. Yankees 3, Twins 2 - Middle of 3rd.

A very quick inning for Aceves, who needed it to get a chance to stay in the game. Matt Tolbert grounded out to second. Mauer struck out. Morneau lined out to right to end the innning. Yankees 3, Twins 2 - End of 3rd.

Ransom gets some redemption at the plate. Posada reached on an infield single. Cano doubled to right. Posada advanced to third. Cabrera popped out to shallow left. Posada stayed at 3rd. Ransom singled to left, scoring Posada. Cano stopped at third. Gardner singled to right, scoring Cano. Ransom to second. Jeter grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning. Yankees 5, Twins 2 - Middle of 4th.

Yanks righty reliever David Robertson couldn't find the plate, walking in two runs. Kubel grounded out to the catcher. Cuddyer doubled off the centerfield wall. Buscher singled to center. Cuddyer stopped at third. Redmond was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Aceves is lifted for Robertson. Punto struck out swinging. Span walked, scoring Cuddyer. Tolbert walked, scoring Buscher. Mauer grounded otu to second to end the inning, but the Twins got two runs. Yankees 5, Twins 4 - End of 4th.

Yanks get one on Teixeira's first homer in almost 100 at bats. Swisher struck out swinging. Teixeira homered to left, the first in 95 at bats. Rodriguez struck out swinging. Posada struck out swinging. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - Middle of 5th.

Albaladejo gets the job done in relief for the Yankkes in the 5th. Morneau struck out swinging. Punto walked. Robertson was lifted for John Albaladejo. Cuddyer struck out swinging. Buscher walked. Redmond struck out swinging to end the inning. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - End of 5th.

Cano grounded out to third. Cabrera doubled down the leftfield line. Liriano was lifted for knuckleballer RA Dickey. Ransom and Gardner struck out to end the inning. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - Middle of 6th.

Albaladejo tosses perfect 6th. Punto grounded out to second. Span flied out to center. Tolbert grounded out to short as the Twins go down in order. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - End of 6th.

Yanks fail to crack knuckleball specialist RA Dickey. Jeter grounded out to short on the first pitch. Swisher grounded out to the pitcher. Teixeira lined out to right to end the inning. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - Middle of 7th.

Yanks bullpen continues to get it done. Phil Coke is in to pitch for the Yankees. Mauer reached on an infield single. Morneau grounded into a fielder's choice. Kubel struck out swinging. Coke was lifted for Phil Hughes. Morneau was thrown out trying to advance on a ball that got away from Posada to end the inning. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - end of 7th.

Rodriguez singled to right, extending his hit streak to six games. Posada struck out swinging. Jose Mijares is in to pitch for the Twins. Cano flied to deep center. Cabrera flied to right to end the inning. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - middle of 8th

Hughes cruises through 8th. Cuddyer lined out to right on the first pitch. Buscher struck out swinging. Jose Morales, pinch-hitting for Redmond, struck out swinging to end a perfect 8th for Phil Hughes. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - end of 8th.

Ransom flied out to right on a nice running catch by Cuddyer. Gardner struck out swinging. Jeter walked. Matt Guerrier is in to pitch for the Twins. Swisher flied out to center to end the inning. Yankees 6, Twins 4 - middle of 9th.

Mariano Rivera is in to pitch the 9th. Nick Punto grounded out to first. Span grounded out to second. Harris singled to left. Harris moved to second on a defensive indifference. Mauer grounded out to first to end the game. Yankees win their third straight, 6-4.

Rivera picked up his 23rd save of the season as the Yanks sweep the series. It was the Yankees last regular season game at the Metrodome. The Twins move to a new stadium next season.

Hughes had another scoreless outing, while Albaladejo was impressive, pitching a scoreless 1 2/3 innings. Teixeira had another productive day with a homer and A-Rod extended his hitting streak to six games. The Yankees improve to 51-34 and the Twins drop to 43-43. It was a good series for the Yankees, who need to be on a roll when they head to Anaheim. Joba Chamberlain will start tomorrow's game against the Angels.

Good evening everyone!

The best summary of A.J. Burnett's night came from Jorge Posada.

“We had to go out there with no curveball to tell you the truth,” Posada said. “Just fastballs. No changeup. Just pretty much fastballs.”

Burnett agreed.

“I obviously didn’t have a hook the whole game and my control was off, big time,” Burnett said. “Fought myself a lot, but I was able to regroup and make pitches when I needed to.”

And that's perhaps the biggest difference between the Burnett taking the mound for the Yankees currently and the one from earlier in the season. On a night no one felt Burnett was particularly good, he still only gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He only struck out two but they were big ones. He struck out Michael Cuddyer, who homered off the night before, on an 83-mph curve with the bases loaded to end the fifth, and left two Twins aboard in the sixth by striking out Denard Span.

“I thought it was a tough performance by him,” Joe Girardi said of Burnett. “He seemed to be in trouble a couple innings and he found ways to get big strikeouts or big outs during the game, and sometimes you’re not going to be as sharp as other nights, but when you can hold a team down and do what he did, that’s a great performance.”

* The bottom of the Yankees order, which produced six RBI Tuesday night, produced three more tonight, two by Brett Gardner and one by Nick Swisher.

“We have some guys who are capable of doing the job, 1 through 9,” Gardner said. “We have some guys all-around who can get it done.”

* Burnett on the third inning in which he threw two of this three wild pitches: “They were going everywhere, man. "I was overthrowing changeup, cutting off hooks…pretty much anything you can name, I was doing.”

Overall, can't find too much to fault in the start of this difficult trip with two straight victories. Tonight's win assures the Yankees of winning their fifth straight series and they go for the sweep at 1:10 ET Thursday as Alfredo Aceves takes on Francisco Liriano.

Good evening Yankees fans. Welcome to another night on the Yankee blog. The Yankees (49-34) look to take two in a row from the Twins (43-41) in Game 2 of a three-game set.

A.J. Burnett (7-4, 3.83 ERA) will take on the Twins' righthander Anthony Swarzak (2-2, 3.90). Swarzak was supposed to be Thursday's starter, but he was pushed up a today because of an illness to tonight's scheduled starter Glen Perkins. Swarzak has never faced the Yankees. He has an ERA of 8.1 in his last two starts at the Metrodome.

Burnett has been excellent his last four starts, sporting a 3-1 record with an ERA of 0.99. Burnett pitched seven innings in three of those starts and went 6 1/3 innings in the fourth one. He's given up just three runs with 33 strikeouts over that stretch.

Overall the Yankees have won 11 of 13 games and are a season-best 15 games over .500.

Mark Teixeira picked up right where he left off against Twins pitching as he went 4-for-6 with an RBI in Tuesday's 10-2 win. Teixeira has five home runs and 13 RBIs in his last seven games against the Twins.

We'll see everyone after the top of the 1st.

The Yankees let Swarzak off the hook. Derek Jeter led off the game with a single to right. Johnny Damon bounced into a 3-6-3 double play. Mark Teixeira flied out to centerfield for the last out. Yankees 0, Twins 0 - Middle of 1st.

Burnett helped himself with a pickoff. Denard Span reached on an infield single. Span reached second on a wild pitch (Burnett's 11th of the season). Span was picked off at second by Burnett. Brendan Harris flied out to right. Joe Mauer grounded out to first to end the inning. Yankees 0, Twins 0 - End of 1st.

Yanks offense gives Burnett a lead. Alex Rodriguez grounded out to third. Matsui reached on an infield single. Jorge Posada singled to left. Robinson Cano singled to left. Nick Swisher grounded out to the pitcher, scoring Matsui. Brett Gardner singled to rightcenter, scoring Posada and Cano. Yanks lead 3-0. Gardner stole second. Jeter bounced to third to end the inning. Yankees 3, Twins 0 - Middle of 2nd.

Burnett cruises through second. Justin Morneau flew out to left. Michael Cuddyer popped out to second. Jason Kubel reached on an infield single to third. Joe Crede flied out to rightfield. Yankees 3, Twins 0 - End of 2nd.

Easy inning for the Twins. Damon fouled out to the shortstop. Teixeira fouled out to third. Rodriguez popped out to second. Yankees 3, Twins 0 - Middle of 3rd.

Burnett nearly coughs up the lead after being wild. Nick Punto grounded out to first. Span singled to center. Span stole second. Harris walked. Span and Harris moved up a base on Burnett's second wild pitch. Span scored and Harris moved to third on another wild pitch by Burnett. Mauer doubled off the left field wall, scoring Harris. Morneau grounded out to second to end the inning. Yankees 3, Twins 2 - End of 3rd.

Yanks had first and second with one out, but couldn't capitalize. Swarzak's confidence level is rising. Matsui lined out to deep center. Posada doubled down the rightfield line. Cano was hit by a pitch. Swisher flew out to deep left. Posada advanced to third. Gardner flied out to center to end the inning. Yankees 3, Twins 2 - Middle of 4th.

Burnett seems to have settled down a bit. Cuddyer flew out to right. Kubel flew out to left. Crede singled to right. Gomez grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Crede at second. Yankees 3, Twins 2 - End of 4th.

A-Rod came through to give Burnett more breathing room. Jeter doubled to left center to lead off the inning. Damon flied out to right. Jeter stayed at second. Teixeira walked. Rodriguez singled to left, scoring Jeter. Teixeira moved to second. Matsui lined out to second off new pitcher Bobby Keppel. Posada walked, loading the bases. Cano flied out to left to end the inning. Yankees 4, Twins 2 - Middle of 5th.

Burnett gets out of a bases loaded jam with his 100th strikeout of the season. Punto walked. Span grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Punto at second. Harris popped out to first. Mauer singled to left. Span advanced to third. Morneau walked to load the bases. Cuddyer struck out on a pitch in the dirt to end the inning.. Yankees 4, Twins 2 - End of 5th.

Yanks fail to add to lead. Swisher reached on an error by the shortstop. Gardner grounded into a fielder's choice, forcing Swisher at second. Garnder was caught stealing. Jeter grounded out to second to end the inning. Yankees 4, Twins 2 - Middle of 6th.

Burnett got out of trouble again. Kubel singled to right. Crede popped out to second. Gomez walked. Punto fouled out to left. Span struck out swinging to end the inning. Yankees 4, Twins 2 - End of 6th.

Yanks fail to do anything with Teixeira's single. Damon grounded out to second. Teixeira reached on an infield single. Rodriguez flied out to center. Matsui flied out to left to end the inning. Yankees 4, Twins 2 - Middle of 7th

Coke makes things a little tighter. Harris lined out to center. Phil Coke is in to pitch for Burnett. Mauer homered off Coke. Morneau struck out and was put out 2-3. Hughes is in to pitch for Coke and got Cuddyer to fly out to right and end the inning. Yankees 4, Twins 3 - End of 7th.

Easy inning for the Twins pitching, who keep chipping away. Posada grounded out to first. Cano grounded out to short. Swisher was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double. Yankees 4, Twins 3 - Middle of 8th.

Girardi decided to go to Mariano Rivera in the 8th. And it worked. Kubel grounded out to second. Crede fouled out to the catcher. Brian Buscher is pinch-hitting for Gomez. Buscher singled to center. Jose Morales is hitting for Punto. Mariano is coming in for Phil Hughes for a 4-out save. Morales lined out to short to end the inning. Yankees 4, Twins 3. End of 8th

Yanks can't crack Twins bullpen. Jose Mijares is pitching for the Twins. Gardner popped out to third. Jeter lined out to third on a great diving stop by Crede. Damon grounded out to 1st. Yankees 4, Twins 3 - Middle of 9th.

Another smooth save for Mariano Rivera. Span grounded out to first. Harris struck out looking. Mauer lined out to shortstop to end the game. Rivera gets the four-out save, his 22nd of the season.

A.J. Burnett lost control at times, tossing three wild pitches, but he made the big pitches when it counted and got his eight win of the season. He improves to 8-4. The Yankees improve to 50-34 and have won 12 of their last 14. The Twins drop to 43-32. Tomorrow's game, a 1:00 p.m. start, will feature Alfredo Aceves vs. Francisco Liriano.

Good night everyone!

AP Photo

CC Sabathia improved to 6-1 with a 1.70 ERA at the Metrodome since May 5 2005 tonight, going seven innings and allowing three hits and one run.

“I actually don’t like it here,” Sabathia said with a laugh. “It’s always cold, hard to get a sweat.”

That wasn’t a problem during his last start, a warm night in the Bronx against the Mariners when he gave up a season-worst 10 hits and season-worst-tying six runs.

“Last start I had good velocity, good stuff, it was just everything was up,” Sabathia said. “Tonight I just tried to make sure I got strike 1 and go from there.”

Sabathia, who is 7-2 with a 3.16 ERA over his last 12 starts and who has thrown at least seven innings in 10 of his last 11 starts, said everything leading up to this start felt better than his previous outing.

“Yeah, I felt a lot better in the bullpen,” Sabathia said. “Felt a lot better in between starts, so I felt like I could go out and pitch pretty good today.”

The Yankees, who have won 11 of their last 13, stayed one game behind the Red Sox.

“We feel like we’ve been playing pretty good baseball,” Sabathia said. “That stuff [the standings] will take care itself. We need to make sure that we’re doing what we need to do; playing good defense, good pitching and getting some timely hits.”

Speaking of those, Robinson Cano ended his nightmare skid with runners in scoring position of late. He fell to 0-for-21 when he grounded out with the bases loaded in the fourth but got some encouraging words from hitting coach Kevin Long when he got back to the dugout. In the sixth Cano delivered a two-run single.

“That was fun getting a hit right there,” Cano said. “First one I hit a ground ball to second base and when I came back to the dugout Kevin said, ‘Don’t worry, you’re going to get your hit next at bat.’ I was always positive. I never put my head down and just said, things happen in baseball. You have to keep fighting and keep working hard.”

Overall, the Yankees were 7-for-17 with runners in scoring position tonight.

* The Yankees got sustained production from the bottom of the order as Cano, Brett Gardner and Francisco Cervelli combined for seven hits and six RBI.

"Love when everyone contributes," Joe Girardi said. "Just makes it easier to score runs when you don’t have to put pressure on the top guys all the time to do it."

Some other random things, courtesy of the postgame notes:

* Yankees pitchers have a 2.95 ERA over their last 21 games.

* Mark Teixeira had his fourth four-hit game of the season and 26th multi-hit game. He is batting .545 (12-for-22, including two doubles, three home runs and 10 RBI) vs. the Twins this season.

* Hideki Matsui has hit safely in seven straight games. He’s 10-for-21 with three home runs, three doubles, five walks and 11 RBI in that stretch.

* Gardner had his fourth three-hit game of the season.

And with that, goodnight from the Metrodome. Back tomorrow night as A.J. Burnett (7-4, 3.83) takes on Glen Perkins (4-4, 4.38).

Hello everyone! I’m David Cassilo, and I will be taking you through tonight’s series opener between the Yankees and the Twins at the Metrodome. Earlier in the season, New York swept a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. However, every game was decided by two runs or less.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tonight the Yankees will hope their ace CC Sabathia can get back on track after a poor outing in his last start. Against the Mariners last Thursday Sabathia suffered the loss, allowing six runs and ten hits in 5.2 innings.

Overall, Sabathia stands at 7-5 with a 3.85 ERA this season. He has won six of his last eight decisions.

The Twins did not face Sabathia the last time these two teams met, but the team has plenty of history with the left-hander as he used to face them often while with the Cleveland Indians. He has made 27 starts against Minnesota, and he has a 12-8 record with a 3.12 ERA in those starts.

Of all Twins players only one, Mike Redmond, is hitting above .250 against Sabathia. In 26 career at-bats against the Yankees’ ace, Redmond has 13 hits and six RBI. His only career steal also came off Sabathia.

For Minnesota, 27-year old right-hander Scott Baker will take the mound. After an impressive season last year (11-4, 3.45 ERA), Baker has been up-and-down in 2009 as he stands at 6-6 with a 4.99 ERA. Recently, however, Baker has been pitching better, going 4-0 in his last six starts, while allowing three runs or less in all of them.

Baker has also had success against the Yankees so far in his young career. He has won both of his two career starts against New York, while posting a 1.50 ERA.

I will be back for first pitch.

Top of the first: Derek Jeter singles to center field. Johnny Damon strikes out looking. Mark Teixeira singles to center field, and Damon advances to third. Alex Rodriguez pops out to first base. Hideki Matsui singles to center field to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Nick Swisher strikes out swinging.

Bottom of the first: Denard Span grounds out to second base. Brendan Harris strikes out swinging. Joe Mauer grounds out to shortstop.

Top of the second: Robinson Cano doubles into the right field corner. Brett Gardner hits a ground ball off the pitcher that he beats out for an infield single. Francisco Cervelli hits a sacrifice fly to the left field warning track, and the Yankees lead 2-0. Gardner advances to second on the flyout. Jeter flies out to right field. Damon reaches on an infield single to shortstop. Teixeira singles between shortstop and third base to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. Damon advances to third. Rodriguez strikes out swinging.

Bottom of the second: Justin Morneau grounds out to shortstop. Michael Cuddyer hits a home run to left field, and the Twins trail 3-1. Joe Crede pop out to second base. Delmon Young strikes out looking.

Top of the third: Matsui grounds out to third base. Swisher singles on a ground ball up the middle. Cano flies out to left field. Gardner strikes out swinging.

Bottom of the third: Carlos Gomez grounds out to shortstop. Nick Punto walks. Span lines out to shortstop. Harris pops out to first base.

Top of the fourth: Cervelli singles on a ground ball to left field. Jeter walks. Damon walks. Baker is done.

Brian Duensing relieves Baker. Teixeira pops out to first base. Gomez makes an unbelievable leaping catch at the wall to rob Rodriguez of a grand slam, but Cervelli scores on the sacrifice fly to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead. Matsui walks to load the bases. Swisher gets an RBI on a bases loaded walk giving the Yankees a 5-1 lead. Cano is now 0-for his last-22 with RISP as he grounds out to first base.

Final line on Baker: 3 IP 9 H 5 ER 2 BB 4 K

Bottom of the fourth: Mauer strikes out swinging. Morneau pops out to second base. Cuddyer flies out to center field.

Top of the fifth: Gardner pops out to first base. Cervelli lines out to second base. Jeter flies out to right field.

Bottom of the fifth: Crede pops out to shortstop. Young hits an infield single to second base. Gomez grounds out to third base. Punto grounds out to first base.

Top of the sixth: Damon strikes out looking. Teixeira singles up the middle. Rodriguez walks. Matsui flies out to the warning track in center field. Swisher walks to load the bases. Cano finally gets a hit with runners in scoring position as he hits a two-RBI single to give New York a 7-1 lead. Duensing is pulled from the game.

R.A. Dickey is in for the Twins. Gardner hits a two-run triple to right-center field and the score is now 9-1. Dickey is laboring as Cervelli hits an RBI double in the left field corner to give the team a 10-1 lead. Jeter strikes out looking.

Bottom of the sixth: Span hits an infield single to first base. Harris flies out to center field. Mauer flies out to the warning track in left field. Morneau grounds out to second base.

Top of the seventh: Melkey Cabrera pinch hits for Damon. Cabrera pops out to shortstop. Teixeira flies out to Gomez at the warning track in center field. Rodriguez becomes the last Yankee starter with a hit as he singles up the middle. A wild pitch moves Rodriguez to second base. Matsui walks. Swisher strikes out swinging.

Bottom of the seventh: Cody Ransom replaces Jeter at shortstop. Cuddyer pops out to Teixeira in foul territory. Crede flies out to Cabrera in left field. Young grounds out to shortstop.

Top of the eighth: Mauer has been replaced by Jose Morales behind the plate. Cano grounds out to second base. Gardner gets an infield single after he hits one off the pitcher. Cervelli grounds out to second base. Ransom flies out to right field.

Bottom of the eighth: Brett Tomko relieves Sabathia, and Eric Hinske is in for Rodriguez. Gomez grounds out to shortstop. Punto walks for the second time tonight. Span grounds out to second base. Harris hits an RBI single to center field making the score 10-2. Morales grounds out to first.

Final line for Sabathia: 7 IP 3 H 1 ER 1 BB 3 K

Top of the ninth: Cabrera flies out to center field. Teixeira picks up his fourth hit of the ninth with a single up the middle. Hinske grounds into a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Bottom of the ninth: Matt Tolbert hits for Morneau and grounds out to first. Cuddyer flies out to left field. Crede flies out to right field.

Final score: 10-2 Yankees

W- Sabathia (8-5)
L- Baker (6-7)

Player of the game: CC Sabathia 7 IP 3 H 1 ER 1 BB 3 K

This is exactly how the Yankees drew it up when they assembled this team. The offense was dominating (every starter had a hit), and Sabathia was equally as good on the mound. The result is a resounding 10-2 victory over the Twins.

Boston won as well tonight, so the Yankees remain a game behind the Red Sox in the division.

Tomorrow the Yankees will look to improve to 6-0 against Minnesota this season when A.J. Burnett faces off against Glenn Perkins.

Good afternoon Yankees fans. Let's pause to appreciate the career of Derek Jeter for a moment. The Yankee Captain will play in his 10th career All Star Game next week, after receiving more votes than any other AL player. At 35, he'll be the oldest shortstop to start for the AL team since Luis Aparicio in 1971. Yeah, there wasn't really much competition for the spot, but you have to give Jeter the respect when you realize he's the only one of those young 90's shortstops to still be playing at a high level at shortstop.

Tom Verducci did a story on the shortstops for Sports Illustrated back in 1997, featuring Jeter, A-Rod, Alex Gonzalez, Edgar Renteria and Rey Ordonez all photographed together (for whater reason the picture was taken shirtless). Since then, Renteria's been a pretty good player (.289 career average, five All-Star selections) but not at the level of Jeter or A-Rod, Gonzalez has been out of the majors for three years, Ordonez for five. And obviously Jeter's part of the reason A-Rod isn't playing shortstop anymore, but ask most Yankee fans who they'd rather have up in a big spot. Since that article plenty of big-time shortstops have emerged, (Nomar Garciaparra, Miguel Tejada, et al) but none have had the staying power of Derek Jeter. Sure most of those guys have had better individual years and Jeter will probably have to switch positions at some point in the near future, but none can claim his staying power and winning pedigree.

Tonight Jeter, fellow All Stars Mark Teixera, Mariano Rivera and the Yankees will look to complete the sweep of four straight day games over the Toronto Blue Jays. Veteran lefty Andy Pettitte (8-3, 4.25 ERA) takes the hill for the Yanks against young lefty Ricky Romero (6-3, 2.85 ERA). The 24-year-old has won his last three starts and hasn't allowed a run in 20 innings. The 2005-first round pick has a devastating changeup, and will be playing the Yanks for the first time.

See you guys when Pettitte throws his first pitch.
-Mark Macyk

Team's being announced now... As the game begins. But we know Teixeira eked out the first base vote from the Sawx's Kevin Youkilis and Jeter got his 10th All-Star start from fans.

Welcome everyone! I’m David Cassilo, and I will be taking you through today’s Yankee game as they try to win their fifth straight game against the Blue Jays.

Yesterday the Yankees had yet another dramatic win at home when Jorge Posada provided an RBI single in the 12th inning to give New York a 6-5 victory. Any win against a division rival is important, but considering that Roy Halladay started the game for Toronto, the Yankees must be thrilled they were able to walk away victorious.

With that win yesterday, the Yankees are now 47-33 and just a game back of the Red Sox for first place. Meanwhile, Toronto is quickly falling in the AL East, and with a 42-20 record, they are seven games back of first place.

PITCHING MATCHUP: The Yankees will look to continue their winning ways when they send Joba Chamberlain to the mound today. So far in 2009 Chamberlain is 4-2 with a 3.89 ERA in 15 starts. He has struck out an impressive 73 batters in 81 innings. However, in his last start Chamberlain was not at the top of his game as he allowed three runs and nine hits in 5.1 innings against Seattle.

In his career against Toronto, Chamberlain is 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA in nine appearances, including two starts.

His counterpart on the hill was supposed to be Scott Richmond, but after landing on the disabled list yesterday with right shoulder tendinitis, 23-year old rookie left-hander Brett Cecil will now make the start. In his rookie season Cecil is 2-1 with a 5.09 in six starts.

No Yankee has ever faced Cecil, which has been a problem for New York in similar situations this season.

I’ll be back for first pitch.

Top of the first: Marco Scutaro walks. Aaron Hill flies out to center field. Adam Lind flies out to left field. Scott Rolen strikes out.

Bottom of the first: Derek Jeter singles to right field. Johnny Damon flies out to right field. Mark Teixeira walks. Jorge Posada singles to left field, loading the bases. Hideki Matsui reaches on an error by Lyle Overbay that scores Jeter to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. Teixeira is out at home on the play. Nick Swisher hits an RBI single to right field that scores Posada and makes the score 2-0. Robinson Cano grounds out to second base.

Top of the second: Overbay flies out to right center. Vernon Wells gets the first Toronto hit with a single to left field. Chamberlain picks off Wells. Alex Rios flies out to center field.

Bottom of the second: Melkey Cabrera grounds out to second base. Cody Ransom walks. Jeter singles to left field. Damon strikes out swinging. Teixeira walks. Posada hits a single to left field that scores Ranson and Jeter to make the score 4-0. Matsui walks. Swisher strikes out looking.

Top of the third: David Dellucci pops out to shortstop. Raul Chavez hits a double down the right field line. Scutaro grounds out to second and Chavez moves to third base. Hill hits an RBI single down the left field line to get Toronto on the board as the score is now 4-1 Yankees. With Hill on first, Lind hits a two-run home run to close the gap to 4-3 Yankees. Rolen flies out to right field to end the inning.

Bottom of the third: Cano singles to right field. Cabrera grounds into a fielder's choice. Ransom strikes out looking. Jeter grounds into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

Top of the fourth: Overbay singles to left field. Wells flies out to center field. Rios reaches first base after Ransom is unable to handle a tough hop at third. He is credited with an error. Dellucci flies out to right field. Chavez hits an RBI double to the left field corner that ties the game at 4-4. With two out, Scutaro hits a 2-RBI single up the middle to give the Blue Jays a 6-4 lead. Aaron Hill hits a two-run HR that just squeaks over the fence in right field to make the score 8-4 Toronto. Adam Lind singles to center field. Chamberlain is pulled from the game.

Jonathan Albaladejo comes in with a man on first and two out. Rolen singles to left field, and Lind goes to third. Overbay lines out to shortstop.

Cecil is done for the day.

Former closer B.J. Ryan enters the game for Toronto. Cano is caught stealing to end the inning.

He flies out to deep center field for the second out. Posada hits an RBI double down the right field line making the score 10-8 Yankees. Matsui singles to right field, and Posada is thrown out by Rios at the plate.

The Yankees and Blue Jays combined to score 18 runs in the first five innings, but then both bullpens shut the door for the rest of the game. While it was a collection of pitchers for Toronto, Aceves was the star for the Yankees as he gave up just one hit over the final four innings.

Jeter, Posada and Matsui combined for nine of the ten RBI.

Tomorrow the Yankees will go for the sweep when Andy Pettite squares off against Ricky Romero.

Joe Girardi said Chien-Ming Wang (right shoulder) won't do anything until after the All-Star break, which means 12 days of inactivity before he even begins throwing, so let's say at least a month before we see him again.

Jonathan Albaladejo is up to help out a beleaguered bullpen, though it could still be Sergio Mitre on Thursday. Or it could be Alfredo Aceves, who was the only reliever who didn't pitch in yesterday's 12-inning win.

Here's the lineup, with A-Rod getting a day off and Robinson (0-for-19 with RISP) Cano dropped to seventh:

Jeter - SS
Damon - LF
Teixeira - 1B
Posada - C
Matsui - DH
Swisher - RF
Cano - 2B
Cabrera - CF
Ransom - 3B
Chamberlain - P
