Sabathia offer on table

The Yankees have made their opening offer to CC Sabathia. They want the lefthander bad, and they're not going to mess around. So they started quickly with a mega-offer believed to be something more than Johan Santana received from the Mets last winter. The offer, a source said, is in the ballpark of six years and $140-million. That would be the biggest contract ever for a pitcher.

There will be offers on the table for A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe by Monday as well.

The Yankees are doing it correctly. We need starting pitching. Our run of WS rings between '96 and '00 came with excellent starting pitching and close the door bullpen. Not that we don't need a better bullpen but its pretty good. The contracts are on the table and I'm sure there is about 55 million dollars of money on the table for these three pitchers. It should do the trick. And how many pitchers can go to a team and have the expectation of a WS ring especially if all three come to the Yanks. If CC signs than the other two will follow. IMHO.If we have CC, Wang, Brunett, Lowe and Joba . We would have the rotation necessary to win it all. Also assuming that the same lineup could improve on the 4.9 runs per game.

If AP was offered a contract. I'd put Joba in the bullpen as Mo's setup. Now we have the lockdown bullpen.

Jim A: I think that you and Diane could live with Swisher at 1B.

I guess Cash ain't leading with a jab, huh? Full-throttle, wind-up roundhouse to the lefty.

This is gonna be fun.

I like the pre-emptive strike the Yanks are using....not waiting to see what others offer...just taking care of business. Let's hope it works ;-)

Do you all think the Yanks will give CC some kind of deadline to accept the offer before they move on? We know we've heard that kind of talk with other free agents but will the Yanks have the guts to do it with the big fella?
I know CC said he was not going to drag this out so let's hope they don't.

My ulcer will not stop burning until CC signs on the dotted line.

Hey if it gets it done FABULOUS but again I fail to learn to ignore the media when they pretend to have a clue about most things in general.

There wasn't a soul alive today that thought our "Blow him away offer" from the Yankees would be a penny less than 150 and I for one don't believe this to be the best starting point especially if it's intended to intimidate others from competing.

Can the Mets/Redsox/Dodgers/Angels beat this offer?

Yes.

Do they want to?

Probably not but we're still about 15 to 20 million short IMO if Cashman's intent is to lobby the players union into action of his and our behalf.

If CC really want's to sun his A$$ in the California sun and Cashman really is serious about bribing him away from such luxury for the famously splendid weather offered by "THe Tri State Area" then act like it right?

I don't know I just wish this part was over with so we could not get entangled in Borasgate '08 on his terms.

That was the lone intentional or otherwise aspect of the Swisher deal I like.

Even if not just posturing atleast Cash made us appear disinterested in Texiera.

Without the Yankess the price can only reach a finite plateau and when it does Brian can either act and attempt to beat said offer or not.

Whatever...The more I think about it i almost feel guilty for complaining.

Most teams can't even begin to fathom making an offer to CC and this I'm pretty sure and optimistic is just our 1st toe in the water right?

HAH

Should be fun as always.

Larry, I have nothing at all against Swisher and actually will welcome him just as I did Doug M. if he proves to have a handle on playing 1b. I have a hard time watching people stumbling over the landscaping around the bag, as we have so often had to do in recent years, but my heart is quickly won by anybody who shows a mastery of the position.

Jim A--In a word: Mylanta.

Diane,

I hope the night finds you well and couldn't agree more :-)

Mike,

You make some fine points but I feel the Yankee's willingness to offer such a huge payday shows their true interest. Let's face it, wouldn't you be flattered??? ;-) I hope this all plays out in our favor and like that they are already targeting Brunett and Lowe...it doesn't mean I like either of them but at least they are targeting pitching! Pitching wins, simple as that!

Great read on ESPN for Yankee fans..

It discusses many Yankee topics.

Jim, Im starting to get excited about us maybe landing CC..even a little anxious, god I hope I dont get an ulcer now. ; )

More Sat afternoon goodies!!!! Looks like the Peavy discussions are picking back up!

FROM MLB.COM

Even as they pursue free agent starting pitchers CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett, the Yankees could also have an eye on Padres' right-hander Jake Peavy.

FoxSports.com reports the Yanks and Padres have had "numerous discussions" about Peavy, according to a Major League source. The Braves recently announced they were pulling out of trade discussions for Peavy.

With Peavy having a full no-trade clause and expressing a strong preference to stay in the NL according to agent Barry Axelrod, a trade to an AL club could get complicated. The Cubs remain involved in trade speculation regarding Peavy, but that could end if Chicago is successful in re-signing right-hander Ryan Dempster.

FoxSports also lists the Angels as a possible AL destination for Peavy.

Oh boy! Do you guys mind if I initiate dream sequence Alpha? Wait a sec, I think Im the only one here..lol. OK, how does this sound! Yanks and Padres pull off a block buster deal!

Yankees trade
Austin Jackson
Juan Miranda
Ian Kennedy /McAllister
Hideki Matsui

Padres trade
Jake Peavy
Adrian Gonzalez

This would give the Padres a cheap young 1B replacement of the near future in Miranda. A stud #1 prospect in Jackson. A young high upside minor league pitcher in Kennedy and/or McAllister and an immediate bat to replace Gonzalez in Matsui and who's contract is set to expire at the end of the year ( let him walk for picks or trade him at the deadline for more prospects )

On top of that we sign CC and Burnett, that would give us the following lineup.

Damon- LF
Jeter- SS
Adrian - 1B
Arod - 3B
Swisher - DH/4th OF
Nady - RF
Cano - 2B
Posada/Molina/Cervelli C
Gardner - CF

That would improve our O big time with speed and power up and down the lineup. Our D would be solid too.

Now the best part...the arms!

CC
Wang
Peavy
AJ
Joba

pause....close your eyes...breath it in...feel the the new stadium shake in late October...hear the crowd roar...exhale....welcome back.

It will never happen in a million years..but its my damn dream and Ill dream it when I want!

GO YANKS!!!

I admit I have a stereotypically female attitude to fantasy-GM scenarios -- never entertain them myself and can barely read through other people's -- but am riveted by actual real-world dealing.

For example, I get a lift every time I see another story with any info at all about NYY's attempting to corral whole segments of the pitching market! Yes!! That silly daydream about winning with a bunch of untried kindergardeners is truly, truly over!!! Next season we go into competition with real big leaguers on the mound!!!!

I know we won't get them all but I feel good about the possibilities of our ending up with a couple of them at least.

Can't wait.
