Hank Steinbrenner on Yankees' pursuits

Hank Steinbrenner was the only Yankees official quoted on the record yesterday. He basically said the same thing as others said off the record, confirming to the AP in Tampa that the Yankees made an offer to CC Sabathia and plan to make offers to A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
Asked if they had made an offer to Sabathia, Steinbrenner told the AP: "Yes. And we're prepared to make offers to Burnett and Lowe."
Steinbrenner also said: "I'm starting to become very optimistic. I think it's going to be mutually beneficial to us and for these particular players that we're after for them to join the Yankees."

There is no muzzle restrictive enough to keep this moron from opening his big mouth.

Everyone but Hank realizes he does his organization no service whatsoever by continuing to inform the media about every thought that enters his idiotic mind.

I wonder if Hank prefers Catsup or Ketchup...we know everything else?

Didn't notice new thread, so I'll repost now:

I admit I have a stereotypically female attitude to fantasy-GM scenarios -- never entertain them myself and can barely read through other people's -- but am riveted by actual real-world dealing.

For example, I get a lift every time I see another story with any info at all about NYY's attempting to corral whole segments of the pitching market! Yes!! That silly daydream about winning with a bunch of untried kindergardeners is truly, truly over!!! Next season we go into competition with real big leaguers on the mound!!!!

I know we won't get them all but I feel good about the possibilities of our ending up with a couple of them at least.

Can't wait.

The Yankees have open the bidding to CC just about 140 for 6 yrs. This has to eliminate most Eastern teams except the Mets and Boston who may just offer Santana money to make it interesting or drive up the offer. Now. the NL West Coasr teams may make it interesting with a similar # causing us Yank fans some concern but I believe this offer eliminates LAA and Dodgers who have other thoughts about retooling. SF who knows but their team is lacking in many Offensive departments. So we look good for the big prize but will be hunting for at least one more of the Brunett, Peavy, Lowe trio IMHO.

Man this is silly money.

Don't jinx it guys and gal!

Dru's dream scenario on the last thread could really happen though couldn't it? Although I'm not that sold on Peavy for some reason and I think the Yanks would have to throw another arm in the deal Dru proposed (not Hughes- I just don't think he should be traded at this point).

DRU's scenario is crazy and will never happen.

I suppose they could find a way to land Peavy if Towers lowers his asking price to Swisher levels but I wouldn't count on it.

And Cashman's own words should be evidence enough that they are not going hunting for Teixeira or Manny - which is what I've been saying all along:

The raging speculation has been that the Yankees will sign CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira and another high-end free agent or two such as Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe or A.J. Burnett. General manager Brian Cashman termed that conjecture "crazy talk."

In fact, in an exclusive interview with The Post, Cashman strongly indicated the Yankees will not even sign Sabathia and Teixeira in tandem.

"At the pricetags I have read, that is fantasy land, not reality land," Cashman said yesterday of bringing in Sabathia and Teixeira. A Yankees executive said the club has not even created scenarios for assembling a 2009 roster in which it signs the most attractive starter and position player in the free-agent market.

The plan is to concentrate on starting pitching, namely Sabathia, and - at best - Teixeira is a backburner issue in case all the rotation avenues prove fruitless. Teixeira was pushed further to the backburner yesterday when the Yanks obtained Nick Swisher, who, as of now, projects to be the starting first baseman.

I'm hoping Burnett and Lowe find another residence because I'd prefer to see the Yanks find another starter via the trade route.

Just because the best available sources of protein at your local grocery store is liver and dog food doesn't mean you have to buy it. You find another way.

Now that was the fastest "Youth Movement" ever. Abandoned after one year and done.

Nudge,

How has the youth movement been abandoned???? If they sign CC and let's say Burnett or Ollie they would effectively replace Moose/Pettitte...so they would get younger starting staff wise.

Plus, I have read they would rather not go the trade route as they want to hold on to their young players. So what you are implying makes no sense?

Remember the Credo of building the team with youth from within the organization?

How about how loaded with young talent the organization was?

Some how all that youth and talent have given way to the same old philosophy of build from outside.

What age is Lowe? Aren't they discussing contract stuff with Pettitte?

What happened to SP of:

Wang
Chamberlain
Hughes
Kennedy
Horne

??????

All out the window. Enough patience has been shown.

See the pattern of say one thing then do another?

I do.

They are keeping their youth and not trading it away...how does that escape you?

Joba is in the rotation and Hughes, at 22, will be given every chance to prove his worth. Kennedy right now seems to be a bust and Horne has been injured. They are all young and still have a chance to shine and NY hasn't given up on them. What idiot would actually think that would be a realistic starting rotation anyway?

Signing CC and Burnett or Ollie would not only make the starting staff younger but allow the youth to pitch down in the rotation....I see no diversion of a plan here. Just keeping the team competitive while the youth matures. Btw, I am not for Lowe and never brought him up.

What is the grand plan for YOUR TEAM???? I would be interested in finding out and your take on it...though I am sure you won't have the balls to say it, troll.

Ollie? Where did that come from? So keeping the youth in the minor leagues is a youth movement? Joba in the rotation,,,,Joba in the pen....whats todays blabber from the front office. Changes daily. We are going to be patient with the young guys.....we are going into FA market to fill the slots of the young guys.....We are going to run this like a business.....we are going to spend whatever it takes.....

Can anyone make up their mind in Tampa(Not in the Rays org. They actually have a plan that seemed to work this year).

Just saw the YOUNG Darrel Rasner was sold to Japan. Another patient youthful project abandoned.

They aren't abandoning the youth movement at all.

Cashman has said many times that the first two names who always come up in trade talks is Hughes and Austin Jackson and he refuses to deal either of them.

The only difference in strategy from a year ago is that Cashman now isn't going to count on young pitching making a big impact with the club and instead will resort to easing them into starting roles.

And Rasner is not one of those young pitchers, considering he's about to turn 28 years old.

But as Realist pointed out....he is younger than Pettite/Moose and may have been their 2nd or 3rd best pitcher last year. No? And isn't Lowe like 35? Also what spot is Hughes filling if the Yanks get all the guys they want.......8th starter.

Nudge,

Rasner is not a "prospect" and never was one. He filled a need last season because the Yanks ran out of bodies (as evidenced by the Ponson signing).

Keeping Pettitte is wise because the guy can still pitch and the Yanks still need pitchers until the younger guys are ready. Besides, Pettitte would be a one-year deal.

I guess you could say that Cashman's strategy with Hughes is the same one that Theo has with Buchholz.

Like Cashman with Hughes, Theo believes that Buchholz is going to be a mainstay in the rotation at some point but he's not ready to give him a starting job in 2009 - hence the Red Sox' interest in Derek Lowe.

What's the difference?

Plus, Joba is still going to be limited to 140-150 IP next season.

BTW, it was Rasner who requested to go to Japan.

I don't believe the young true prospects in the Yankee system are going to be requesting deals to Japan in droves the way Rasner did
