Red Sox try to close out ALDS
I'm here at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox are trying to close out a series sweep of the Angels. The Dodgers have already closed out the Cubs, and the Phillies the Brewers, while the White Sox are leading the Rays right now in an elimination game.
I think the Angels may have a win in them, but we'll see. As I work on stories here, obviously the Yankees are not in need of a closer. They have quite a good one in Mariano Rivera. But if you were a team needing a closer (i.e. the Mets), how much would you be willing to give Francisco Rodriguez. I agree he's awfully good, and he set a record with 62 saves this season, but other guys put up better numbers. I wouldn't say he's the best closer out there, but he's looking for the biggest contract ever. He may be the best closer on the market, though, which is a whole different story.

I have the game on and in between other activities I've been intermittently watching it. I was a bit surprised at how pleased I was when the Angels evened up the score. I've always seen the Red Sox as our primary rival but never hated them in any deeply emotional way. I've disliked some of their players (loathed the smirking Pedro) but others I always kind of liked even though I didn't want them to do well against us (like David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon). But somehow I just can't want the Red Sox to win even when our season is done and nothing they can do can affect it. I know -- the Angels have killed us time and again. But it didn't matter in the same way. So now, even though I don't like the Angels, I can't help hoping they win. Against that knock-kneed guy out there with the chipmunk cheeks.
Papelbon is trying to get out of a jam as I write this. I'm hoping we can sweep tonight and wait for the Rays to close out their series. Whoever wins between the Red Sox and Rays will simply crush the National League champs.

Sully, does that mean you're not pleased that the Angels are 'making it interesting', like you were hoping other teams down two games would do ... ;-)
As much as I despise the Red Sox, fall baseball at Fenway sure is fun to watch.
Glad they eked it out, but the Angels didn't deserve to win that game.
I can't stand either one of them!
Go White Sox!
Larry,
Sorry my Friend that I didn't respond to your last comments. I usually don't get on the computer when I'm home and almost never get on the thing on weekends.
I see what you're saying on Manny and his history certainly supports your concerns (along with a lot of the other guys here).
I just think that he'll make the Yanks' lineup better. He certainly has done that for LA.
I do't see him coming to the Yanks though and he may just want to finish his career in Los Angeles (hopefully with the Dodgers and not the Angels).
I have no desire to have the series "be interesting"
It ALREADY IS interesting
I just hope the Angels don't have new life
I don't remember Yankee fans thinking "I hope the Padres or Rangers win a couple games to make it interesting"
Sully: You should be very happy with the transformation of the Red Sox's with Theo & Co. Young guys at first, second, shortstop, left field, rifght field and center field when Coco is not in the lineup Pitching staff in good shape, I hope the Yanks and Cashman can get younger and hungrier over the winter. Its a downer watching playoff baseball and not riding on every pitch but not to the extent of some of your Red Sox buddies.
John G: no problem, I have learned that there are a few things in life which carry more weight than our Yankees, not many, but some.
