Jake Peavy an option?

Slow weekend in Yankee-land. One potential pitching addition for next season could be Jake Peavy, as Newsday teammate Ken Davidoff explores in this column.

What do you think? Would you be excited about adding Peavy? Personally, I agree that he could be an excellent option with less long-term investment than Sabathia will require.

Less long-term investment, and about $10M/year less in salary, but at what cost in talent? It'll cost 2 picks to sign CC (which we'll get back if Abreu and/or Giambi sign elsewhere). What'll it take to pry Peavey away from SD?

If I ever heard about the ring curse (at the bottom of Ken's piece), I'd forgotten about it. I don't know who these employees were, but what the heck were the Yanks thinking? Whose decision was it? Take that guy's ring away.

I think we need to acquire two top pitchers, and that which two we go for must depend on what combination of money and players it will take to get the combo. For example, if we can get another top pitcher with pure dollars, we can afford to peel off some decent trade bait for Peavey. So I don't feel as if I can have a meaningful opinion on this one potential deal by itself.

Big picture time...

The second puzzle piece must fall into place for us junior GM's to make our next move. Considering the SP as our numero uno priority than, lets go with the facts. Wang, Joba are our only SP guarantees. Assuming Andy P. wants back for a Crack at 2009. I'd slot him in at number 5. A darn good number 5 who could win 12-15 a better chance to pitch better than.500 ball.

So now we have Wang, Joba and Andy. CC, Brunett and maybe Peavy, Hughes/??? are the considerations. The safe bet is Brunett, AL East tested. CC will cost our manhood for a guy who may want to pitch in the NL on the left coast. Peavy may be a second option to close the deal on number 27 if the price is not sky high and he OK's the trade. So Wang, Brunett, Joba, Peavy/???? and Pettitte. If we get Brunett than I'd say, use our chips maybe to pick up a CF in a trade and put Hughesor ???? in the spot but have competition for the spot with any of the other possibles in the farm system. It would allow for the competition to go through the season with guys who are better than AAA players.

We may still have a shot at Tex. with the LAA meltdown against Boston.

There are more spots to fill and I can't show up Cashman by doing them all in one day but I feel pretty good about 2009.

Peavy would be a good pickup, but at what cost? I do not see the Yanks getting rid of Cano to get him. Then the Yanks are going to need to sign Hudson who is 5 years older and does not have nearly the potential Cano has. They may be asking for Hughes too who I still think is going to be able to be a solid starter.

The fact Peavy had a 4.28 ERA on the road and a 1.74 at home this past year kind of scares me too.

this is how itll go down...only cause Cashman pays me a weekly allowance just to come up with different scenarios..lol
1.Ship M.Cabrera, Ian Kennedy, J.Montero, Igawa(eat most his salary), H.Sanchez for Peavy. Padres need a CF, young pitchers, and a catcher for the future(Montero). They also were the ones who placed the waiver claim on Igawa 2 years ago.
2.Trade Cano, A.Horne, C.Wright, D.Rasner for Matt Holliday(only if we get that contract extension)
3.sign Derek Lowe RHP.
4.sign Orlando Hudson 2nd.
We dont need Burnett given that he just pitched the most innings of his injury ridden career. We dont need B.Sheets who is almost as fragile as Pavano. We wont get C.C because nothing matches up with what that beast wants.
WE NEED TO give Phil Hughes, JOBA and A.Aceves a chance to pitch into the rotation. Then in a few years we have A.Brackman, D.Betances and a few others more seasoned for a shot.
2009 rotation will go: 1-Peavy 2-C.Wang 3-D.Lowe 4-Joba Chamberlain 5-P.Hughes or Mussina.
pen: Aceves, D.Giese, P.Coke, Bruney, Veras, E.Ramirez, M.Rivera (long looks at M.Melancon, H.Sanchez, D.Robertson)
I say GOODBYE to Pettite and only welcome back Moose if he doesnt retire and is willing to go one year with an option.
WE NEED TO STAY YOUNG.
lineup
1-Damon CF/DH
2-Jeter SS
3-AROD 3rd
4-Matt Holliday RF
5-Xavier Nady LF
6-Jorge Posada C/DH
7-H.Matsui DH
8-.Juan Miranda/K.Millar 1st
9-Orlando Hudson

Dude... you need to chill out... what is this, fantasy league baseball...?

Your suggestions, and I realise you are just suggesting and fantasising, but those have to be some of the worst trade suggestions I've ever heard.

You sound an awful lot like "CHIP"... mostly because both of you are in love with Orlando Hudson.... WTF?

Hudson is 5 years older than Cano... and has not been able to stay healthy - missing the 2nd half of each of the past 2 years due to wrist/hand surgery.

PLEASE people... stop this love affair with an average ballplayer. He is not that good... and certainly is nowhere near as good a ballplayer as Robinson Cano... who I admit did not have a very good year.

And MIllar at first? Take away what he does against the Yankees and the guy had like 10 homeruns and hit .250. It's just against the Yankees that he looks like Joe DiMaggio.

Additionally, you can't trade Humberto Sanchez for Jake Peavey and then say put Sanchez in the Yankee bullpen too...

Also, you can't logically trade Cano... and then hope to sign Hudson. His price goes up up up if his agent knows the Yankees are trading Cano... and you can't sign him first... then Cano has no trade value to another team... because they know the Yankees have to get rid of him.

Stop the INSANITY!

DOC

Hmmm....another NL SP? NO NO NO!!! Get Burnett, Pettitte and Mussina to go with Joba and Wang.

Burnett
Wang
Joba
Pettitte
Mussina

Hughes or someone like Aceveno waiting in the wings.

Then go all out for Tex. His LA bubble should be popped after Boston raked them over. And remember gang, it was the OFFENSE that failed us most this year!

I would love to see Jake as a Yankee...the cost is what concerns me...

Chip floated a rumor of Cano, Hughes, and Kennedy for Peavy and Gonzales a few weeks ago. Not his but kurkijan's(sp?)...I can't say that I would be opposed to that...especially if Burnett or another starter of his ilk was aquired to team with Wang, Pettitte(against my wishes but seemingly in their plans) and Joba as a STARTER. This team needs a solid staff to compete against Boston, Tampa and Anaheim...

Look, I respect Chip because the guy knows baseball and is one of the smartest of all the regulars here.

However, Chip has been smoking some real strong stuff if he thinks there's any chance in the world the Padres would trade one of the top pitchers in the NL along with perhaps the most underrated run producer in the NL to the Yanks for three guys who severely underperformed in 2008 - then I may have misjudged him.

I know Cashman and Towers are buddies, but Towers isn't going to allow himself get gang raped by the Yankee brass because his buddy's team needs a shakeup.

I'm a bit skeptical that Cano, Hughes, and Kennedy would be enough to land either Peavy or Gonzalez - much less both of them.

Viper,

Tim Kurkijan(sp?) floated that rumor...Chip only posted it...

I mentioned the rumor in the Offseason to which Viper and Me went at it not due to getting peavy, but what it would take to get him.

Viper -

One may be smart online and in the outside looking in while another individual may look crazy and puzzled online and may but may have the guts to be creative in real life.

BC told me after the Nady trade that he thought about our convo and used real life perception rather than what looks like common format perceptions.

Pride in your youth and the age is one thing better than drooling over a fading star that is common perception. However that star may be a piece to a solution while those youth may add substance to the other team.

Melky may not be the MAn so to speak but he along with a robbie would be a offensive upgrade for the pod's not saying that is a deal I would make but hey if SD accepts.

We have to remember what it took for us to start our run.

We signed a supposedly wasted Jimmy Key who then became a exceptional pitcher here and began the process of making the rotation credible again.

You can sign one pitcher and if you can trade for another and sign a key offensive piece.

Burnett would have to opt out before we get crazy over him and while Rick idea of Pettite Moose and Burnett i nthe rotation sounds crazy I see the logic in his post not with the EXACT names but the perception you can easily take out a few names and replace them with the likes of lowe, CC, and even a Pedro now you may laugh but with the emergence of the Yankee Pen the average pitcher needs to only throw 6 strong on average and the wear and tear of hitting (NL) is eliminated.

I mentioned pedro due to the fact that I feel and felt that he is an AL pitcher and I feel that he would have helped the yankees when he shown intrest. I told BC we have to stop the boy scout mentality these are grown men. Just look at Manny and Torre?

If we had signed Beltran and Pedro the team would have been in the WS those were the pieces needed now that Opportunity is present again not with the exact players but in fact the positions.

A big trade should happen, SOME ONE in the Org did admit that perhaps signing a Hunter should have been a major thought.

....I am very chilled out doc.
and one Humberto Sanchez typo does not take away the fact that baseball HAS become like fantasy baseball.....contrary to what you got out of my post, there are alot of 4 for one 5 for one trades happening thruout BB.
My post was venting off the fact that there are glaring needs to fix the Yanks.
Orlando Hudson is known as one of the more vocal, energy boosting, anything for his fam teammates in baseball. I think thats what the Yankees need. Energy. If you saw the games this year, there was no vibe as was in the past that a 3 run defecit could be eclipsed. If only we had someone like P.Polanco.
O-Dawgs wrist injury is supposedly 100 percent albeit a wrist injury does have lingering effects....if he's a grinder, I think he'll be more than just a statistical boost for the Yanks.
I actually don't want Cano leaving but it is what it is.....and other teams have only a handful of wants from the Yankees system.

My suggestion on Millar was more to show that we can get someone to platoon there. No texeira needed. At least I didnt mention a Casey Kotchman for Cano deal. I would of probably heard the world from you.

Obviously, when signing a player, you can have an agreement down with both sides keeping hush while another deal is pursued. Remember: We won alot of games with a very subpar M.Cairo at second so....O-Dawg could be had for a good price, and Cano could be included in the right deal without someone jacking the price up or down.
