It's important to note that Frick (and Spink, for that matter) Award honorees are not Hall of Famers.
...and if I'd clicked the link I'd have seen that fact prominently displayed. Sorry. Calling Frick and Spink Award honorees "Hall of Famers" when the simple fact is that they're not is a pet peeve of mine, and I jumped the gun.
Phil Rizzuto & Ralph Kiner should both me Frick award winners.I guess it's the era you are born in but to met the Yankees will always be Rizzuto, Frank Messer & Bill White an the Mets will always be Lindsey Nelson,Bob Murphy & Ralph Kiner. Murcer & Seaver were good announcers but better players very likeable, Healy was a joke and Sterling is a Buffoon.

I must agree! I will always remember "Scooter" screwing up and speaking about Canolies(sp?), while White laughed and messer attempted to tacticly correct ole' Rhil ;-)
Ahhh the good old days on channel 11.......
Tactfully not tacticly....geez this sinus infection has gone to my brain ;-)
Realist, great point, my thinking is that you remember things based on the time you were growing up, I'm still having trouble in that department on occasion. Do you remember the Rangers games on Channel Nine, I believe the commentator was a gentlemen by the name Win Elliot. Great stuff.
Chip,
I was an Islander fan but most of my friends were Ranger fans...I got crap until they had that 4 straight Stanley Cup run...now more;-)...that said, I remember the WOR games...I loved hockey so much back then that i watched whatever I could.
Wow, going back and re-reading my 1st post leads me to believe I have a new symptom to add to my list, when I visit the Doctor @ 2:00, butchering the English language ;-)
My impersonator is quite good - though I have no trouble remembering things from when I was growing up and I'm far too young to have watched the Rangers on 9.
Of the guys up for the Ford Frick award I would go with Scooter and Kaat. They're the only ones I have a distinct memory of who deserve it in my book.
Speaking of Kaat, I wish he were around these days to give his opinion about how Cash is treating Joba and Co. He would be livid.
It sounds like Alfredo Aceves may replace Ponson in the rotation for the remainder of the season and that we won't be seeing Hughes again this year no matter what he does in the minors from here on out.
I understand that Brian has a plan, I really do, to me though he is quickly devolving into a severely cautious and conservative general manager. Every move he makes seems to be the "safe move" rather than showing some creativity and guts. I'm hoping that this doesn't carry over into the winter. And if he's serious about Joba not starting the season in the rotation then there's no way the Yankees can afford to NOT get Sabathia and at LEAST one more pitcher - and if that pitcher is Mussina I may scream.
Rizzuto, Messer and White: All three should go in at one time. They had the best chemistry of any three announcers I've ever heard.
Gary Thorne should not even be allowed to hold the Frick award. His style of announcing can give a person ulcers as he goes into hyperventilation/screaming mode on anything from a sacrifice fly in a12-2 game to a walk-off grand slam. The only fond memory (of course) I have of anything he announced is when Mattingly homered in his first postseason game against Seattle in '95, at the Stadium.
Kiner belongs- I actually just found out that he is not only still alive, but still on TV- is the latter true? Is "Kiner's Korner" still on? I moved away from NY over 25 years ago and Ralph was losing his mind then...how can this be? Still love him though, he was always great on the unintentional comedy scale.
I used to hate Kubek's voice, but now it just brings back memories of Saturday afternoon games, back when baseball actually liked it when kids got to watch the games. I'd give him a vote.
Ken Harrleson- not only no, but HELLS NO! He is perhaps the worst announcer to ever breathe into a microphone.
John Sterling: Nope- his ego is already in the HOF, but he doesn't belong with it.
Kaat and McCarver would both get a vote from me. A lot of people don't like McCarver but I've never had a problem with him.
Fran Healy- Yawn. He is very, very boring in my opinion.
The funny thing is that of all the current Yankee people I think Suzyn Waldman is going to get in the Frick award. Yes, she's awful, yes her voice makes my ears bleed from time to time. But she's also a trailblazer in the industry. First woman to be a broadcaster for a major men's sport.
May Suzyn Waldman's "OH MY GAWSH, RAWJA CLEMENS IS IN GEOWGES BAWX" announcement be played with a push of the button right below her plaque should she get in.
Then again, Suzyn..."Whats really major about the Yankees These days".
Isn't it about time you picked another person's name to copy "Chip?"
Lol, Kiner's Corner...."Meet the Mets, meet the mets...step right up....." Fill in the blanks...Kiner is definately deserving!
