Giambi breaking out of struggles
Jason Giambi's huge day yesterday snapped a couple of trends. He has struggled with runners in scoring position this year. Yesterday's two such hits moved his average in those situations up from .200 to .213. When you get too detailed about looking at the numbers in different situations, the sample size can get pretty small.
But it's interesting to look at Giambi's numbers there, if maybe not so informative.
Leading off -- .295 avg, .960 OPS
Bases empty -- .238 avg, .918 OPS
Runner on first -- .373 avg, 1.225 OPS
Runner on second -- .176 avg, .743 OPS
RISP -- .213 avg, .690 OPS
August has not been his best month as far as getting hits period, but he does have a season-high in seven homers this month and tied his season-high with 19 RBIs.
There's a little inside-the-numbers fun for you on a Friday morning.

Forget Tex, gimme Giambino for next year! hahahahaha
Great pictures Jim. You have a really nice family.
In the picture that you took at Munson's, I noticed that you're a shrimp standing next to Mike Munson and Rick.
If I was in that picture, you'd probably only see my head.
A few thoughts for my fellow bloggers and my special buddy Chip - how is the GREATEST PLAYER EVER performing under the pressure of RISP??? How is Ted Lilly doing compared to our five SP's??? How did Paul Byrd look a couple of days ago vs the Yankees??? How have Hughes and Kennedy panned out??? The defense rests your honor!

Are you inferring that I am a bit on the large size? Hahaha You would be correct my friend, but I used to be a skinny guy up to my mid 40's. Would you be interested in joining our blog fantasy league next year?
Oh and Chip - How's does the stiff Giambi's clutch hitting compare to AR's? Just on the Yankees, in a clutch situation, I'll take Giambi, Matsui, Damon, Nady, or Jetter to be up over AR! If I were manager, the lineup would be getting a shakeup and MR AR would not be anywhere near the 4 hole. And the TEAM would be much better off!
Rick,
Not fat, big. I'm a runt (5' 9" 165lbs all in the gut) compared to you guys. All of you look like you can play football.
I'd be the football.
I must have been in the back of the line when God handed out size. I have to look up (literally) to everyone I meet. Even some of those little league players that were in the LL World Series are bigger than me. They're only 12 and 13 year olds!!!
Yes my friend, I'd be interested in the fantasy league. Thanks for the invite.
Jim - shot 603 last night (167, 199, 237).
I have to get some pictures up of my family for you guys to see.

Send me your email and contact info to rickkeyes@acction.com. It's what's inside you that makes you a big person, not your shell!
One aspect of the RISP situation is the factor that the Yankees have all been guilty of is moving runners over or in from third base. It does not reflect positively on an increase BA. but improves the teams situation with advancing and scoring runners. My biggest bitch with the lower RISP is that Arod and Giambi are nor even driving the ball to score a run from third base especially AR.
AR is ours, I wanted him as our third baseman and will accept his inability this year to drive in runners. Knowing that a guy of his ability must be suffering an aberration of his normal abilities.
As I have said all too often. This winter should be a tell tale sign of what Cashman, Hal and Hank have in mind for this team. I don't beieve they will put all their eggs in one basket and may find Kennedy wearing a different uniform. I sense even as good as he is and Cano is talented but lacks what Soriano lacked a little bit of a thinking baseball head. Soriano was special and traded. Maybe Cano will be used to bring a solid performer to NY.
John,
Mike Munson is truly built like his dad with that "squatty body" as they used to call Thurman and on top of that, he is a very, very nice guy.
Regarding your bowling: You need to spend a little more time in the bullpen as it seems you get warmed up as you go so get to the alley a little early and throw a few games and you will be on the tour in no time.
Rick: Good to see you back, I hope all is well. By the way, I forgot all about the Anniversary celebration that was supposed to take place at Munson's over the winter....did you hear anything about it?
Chip: It's probably best not to argue with Rick right now since he.....well......right now.........um....HE'S RIGHT!
Thanks Jim A for the support. If people would check the track records, I think my record of analysis is pretty good concerning our Yanks. The Munson thing is for this coming winter. I will let you know as I find out more info.
Wow - am I finally allowed back in?
