Abreu makes people smile
Bobby Abreu made a lot of people happy last night. He was 5-for-5 in the Yankees' come-from-behind 9-4 win over the Orioles -- a game the Yankees really needed after dropping two out of three in Toronto and with Carl Pavano on the mound. Those hits, along w/his two RBIs and two runs scored, made him integral to the win.
But he made some people who aren't necessarily all Yankees fans even happier. He hosted the Venezuela team that played in the Little League World Series, and was eliminated in the international semifinal on Thursday. He chartered a bus for the group of 25, got them tickets, brought them on the field to meet players and sprung for their food and drinks.
The kids were ga-ga over meeting Abreu, one of the most popular players ever from Venezuela, and also from meeting his teammates. He was pretty excited about being able to do that for them, and surprising the players with the trip.
"I guess they've got to come tomorrow," Abreu said. " . . . It was a surprise for them. It's the first major league game for them. It is a beautiful day, to make them happy, a nice game that we win. It couldn't be a better day."

Nice post, Kat.
I was in Caracas a couple times in the '90's. Sandlots everywhere. Full of kids, day and night. Wherever I was, I could just find the nearest park and watch a game. Just great.
ESPN reporting that Yanks & Pettitte will face Wakefield and not Beckett on Tuesday at the Stadium. Beckett will miss series. Boon for Bombers.
Also Boston will be without Mike Lowell (oblique) and JD Drew (herniated disc) Yankees really need to take advantage. A sweep of Boston would leave the Yankees only 3 games out and put them right back in the hunt.
