Here are the numbers for tonight's starters, both lefties.
It's Boston's Jon Lester against the Yankees' Andy Pettitte. Lester is 6-3 with a 3.48 ERA. In his last three starts, he's been similar, with a 3.79 ERA.
Pettitte is 9-5 with a 3.98 ERA. He's been tremendous his past three starts, with a 0.95 ERA.

pettitte looks tired, but coming into the all star break, may give him some rest. needs to carry the team with Mussina.
happy birthday Eric, you red sox die hard
Kinda dead today. Had a nice short chat with John G., a quick exchange with Larry in FL, and a couple of interesting notes from Chip and Viper, who always seem to check in with helpful info and authority. But otherwise it's been a pretty non-blog day, so to speak. As in, Non-Dianne checked in, as did Non-Viper several times.
Kind of a bummer. I took the day off to beat the traffic, then had to wait to leave 'til tomorrow anyway. Just waiting around for the game to start.
A week from now, I think we'll have a much better idea where our boys and their season are headed.
Go Andy!
Have a great July 4, everyone!
To DC Yank: Just waiting for game time. There is not much going on but to see if this team cam wake up offensively. We have seen a couple of surges but no real consistency offensively but ironically the pitching as held up fairly well.
My first half thoughts on the team are positive. We are only 5 games over .500 and trailing the Red Sox and Tampa Bay which is somewhat of a surprise but truthfully we all knew Tampa Bay was going to be difficult. And many years of terrific picks of drafts is indicative of their standing a top the AL East. But baseball is changing as most teams are building from within and the Yankees are late to the party in adopting this method of replenishment of players. So in about two years we'll see the fruits of our labor with players being promoted from within instead of FA signings as in the past except for the real pearl. I look forward to this as few teams will not be able to compete with the Yankee money and orgainization and no revenue sharing from us.
I believe the Yanks have enough ability to make a run at a playoff spot. Also, I like Girardi's handling of the club especially given players days off and creating some competiton to spur players on is a good thing with Melky and Gardner. Getting Betemint time at first just in case Tex. is not available to us at the right price.

Umm... how can you say Pettitte looks tired... he's pitched better his last 5 starts than at any other point in the season ???
Just wondering.

Still here DC. Just waiting for the game.
Did you guys take that Yankee Stadium quiz on MSNBC's website? There's 15 questions on the quiz. Check it out.
Larry in FL,
That's about the way I feel about this team, though I certainly hope Betemit isn't our only option at 1B next year if Tex doesn't pan out. LOL.
But you make a good point about Girardi. It does seem like he's decided he's a got a feel for the stable he's been handed, and wants to try to see what he's got for the long run by mixing it up a bit. Without fully giving up on this season, I like that idea right now. With the injuries he's dealing with, there isn't much of an alternative. But some managers would just trot the same veterans out there day in and day out until September.
If he's still in the running when Matsui, Hughes, Kennedy, Bruney, etc. come back, it'll be interesting to see what he does. I'm sure he'll take his best shot at it--these are the Yankees, after all--but I don't get the feeling he's sure he's got the right horses, so to speak.
We'll see. Have a great weekend.
Larry, going to a pub where I can actually see the game. Unusual for me here in DC.
On a weeknight, anyway. ;)
DC: I was a young guy many, many moons (1967) ago enjoying a beer in a pub down in Georgetown. I got up and this lineman of a bouncer probably from U. of Maryland, nicely informs me of not standing with a drink and walking in the pub. Is this still a law in DC. Being a kid from NY is sounded strange but who M I to contest. I sat down as fast as Joba can get it to the plate!
To all you Yankees fans and Sully Too!! Have a good fourth and Lets Go Yanks.
Oops. Just ready to split now. Sorry I missed your post John G. Will take the quiz in the AM.
Larry, I'm a NYC boy myself and have only been here 5 years, so '67 is a bit before my time, but I actually live in G-town and I hear it was mayhem back then. I totally believe the bouncer story--probably a reflection of a conservative university trying to deal with an urban community it had no control over or interaction with at the time. Sign of the times. Things have changed. Georgetown, for better or worse, is a different world these days. And the Jesuit tradition--as great as it is in the realm of education--has certainly come a ways from the sixties, too. I'm not a big college b-ball fan, but I'm lucky if I get to sleep on nights that the Hoyas win. And I live in an apartment on an off-street alley. After a big win, I'm lucky if my car isn't toilet papered and covered in beer.
I don't frequent the University pubs much--or at all--but so far, I haven't been told not to walk around with a beer. But I don't really go where the bouncers are, anymore. Things change. Now I'm feeling old. I wasn't around G-town in '67, but I'm coming up on a big b-day this year. I remember feeling bad for Freddy Patek crying in the dugout, for cryin' out loud. I won't have your wisdom or experience, but it's gonna be a stunner.
Sorry, none of that was well put. I'm rushing out. Catch you all later.
Happy 4th.
We get down 4-0 early, and you fair weather losers chase tail. I am ashamed to even blog on a site with front runners like all of you. Absolutely disgusting. My site Islander1955@aol.com is closed.
