"Next one in doubt" is a little hyperbolic:
"Cashman said he hoped Posada would be ready for the start of next season, but could not guarantee it."
In doubt means doubtful. I don't get that from failing to guarantee he will be ready at the beginning of the season. Let's not overdo Anthony
This was absolutely the right decision.
It didn't make any sense to postpone his surgery regardless whether they acquired Nady or not.
Jeopardizing his 2009 season to attempt to salvage this season was nothing short of moronic.
Very true Viper, thank Zues level heads prevailed.
In honor of Jon K:
"Start of next season in doubt"
OK? We'll have a full story up soon and you can judge for yourself.
I have to agree with AR on this one (shocker of all shockers, eh Anthony?), I think we may have seen Jorge's last game as a catcher. While he may be back next year in pinstripes......I don't know about the catching part of it.
The type of shoulder surgery Jorge is getting is not a good thing, nor does it provide a quick or full recovery from for someone his age.
I wish him nothing but the best of luck.....but.....it's time we started looking for a comparable replacement. (No reflection on Molina.....I LOVE the guy...but ).
michaelz...was just reading your post abour Gardner. If you look back at his minor league splits, he seems to struggle big time upon promotion to the next level. The following season, he seems to figure it out. Now since going from AAA to 'the show' is the biggest leap, it may not happen until 2010, which is fine since we have Damon-Melk-Nady next year. Gardner will probably start out in AAA and get some AB's during the season in 09. I know he doesnt look good now, only swinging with his uppper body, but he "could be" ( many people could be things, but never are, so Ill remain cautious ), a prototypical leadoff hitter for the Yanks. He takes walks, swipes bags, plus he can lay down a bunt and beat it out with pure speed. Once he gets his feet underneath him, he could be a Juan Pierre type..contact hitter with speed, but no power. Im willing to give the kid a shot to prove his worth, for the rest of this year though, he'll get the Sept callup and be a late inning, base stealing replacement...like Homer Bush was for us a decade ago.
Games about to start..enjoy everyone!
GO YANKS!!!!
islander...Cervelli and Molina could be our tandem early next year until Jorge is ready, I think Posada will come back to full strength by the break in 09, if not sooner.
DRU.
Re Gardner...
"He takes walks, swipes bags, plus he can lay down a bunt and beat it out with pure speed."
Maybe he did all that in AAA, but I didn't see it here.
He took STRIKES...too many of 'em....yes he can steal bases, but ya can't steal 1st.
Bunting? don't know what you were watching but the one time I saw him lay one down he looked about as comfortable trying to bunt as Andy Hilbert of the Islanders trying to hit an empty net.
I was very disappointed in what I saw of Gardner up here. I'll cut the guy some slack.....Mantle was a dud the 1st time he came up...but....there's a lot of holes in his offense right now. Too many.
Dru, I don't want to be the guy who passes judgement on someone after 20 MLB games. You are right, it is the toughest jump. My concern is that he has worked his way up all the way through the system and he still isn't using his lower body when he swings? Really? I guess I'm more amazed than anything else.
