Gameday Live 108: Angels at Yankees

You can't understate what a win against the Angels can do for the Yankees tonight.

The Red Sox, who just got swept by the Angels, got worse by giving up Manny Ramirez. Sure they got Jason Bay in return. But the Yankees know that he is no Manny. In effect, the Red Sox kept Bay away from Tampa Bay; and both teams were made less strong with one move. July 31 could be the date it all turned around for the Yankees.

The Yankees, of course, will have Ivan Rodriguez batting eighth in the line up. Andy Pettite is up against John Garland. Darren, here. Let's play ball.

Top 1st -- Chone Figgins flew out to left, then Petitte struck out Erick Aybar with a live fastball on the outside corner. Here's where the Angels will become d-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s through t he rest of the year: Mark Teixiera and Vlad Guerrero both walked, but Torii Hunter grounded out for the force out at second.

Bottom 1st -- Yankees go down in order in the first: Damon grounded out, Jeter flew out to center and Abreu grounded out.

Top 2nd -- This Angels line up is so good, but a base-running miscue may have wasted a potentially big inning. Garrett Anderson (can anyone get this guy out?) singled to left. Howie Kendrick (.330?) singled to center, but Petitte picked off Anderson at second. Juan Rivera flew out, and so did Jeff Mathis.

Bottom 2nd -- The Yankees -- A-Rod, Giambi and Robbie Cano -- go down in order in the second. They had better make Garland work a little, and soon.

Top 3rd -- Here is why the Angels are so dangerous: Figgins singles, Aybar grounds out, but Figgins advanced to second. Texieira singled to short, and Guerrero flew out (just missed a home run) to left. Torii Hunter blasted an opposite-field home run to make the score 3-0. Anderson singled to right-center, then Kendrick singled to advance Anderson to third. Juan Rivera hit a high home run to left, then Petitte finally notched a strikeout. Angels 6, Yankees 0

Bottom 3rd -- How long before Joe Girardi throws in the white flag -- again? Xavier Nady made an out on a soft grounder. In his first at-bat as a member of the Yankees, I-Rod struck out. Melky reached on an error, but Damon flew out to end the inning.

Top 4th -- Figgins singled again, Aybar and Teixiera both flew out. Guerrero struck out to end the inning, but telling by the swing he took, he probably thought they were down by six runs. Then again, he always swings like that.

Bottom 4th -- Garland had a no-hitter going through three. Then he said hello to Bobby. Jeter flew out to right, but then Abreu homered to break up the no-no. A-Rod doubled to left-center, and Giambi flew out to Hunter. Cano flew out to end the inning. Angels 6, Yankees 1

Top 5th -- Hunter struck out to lead off the inning (has Petitte settled down all of a sudden?) and Pettite set down Anderson and Kendrick for his first 1-2-3 inning. Maybe he has settled down, though those Angels bats can't be as quick, having batted around and all.

Bottom 5th -- Nady walked, I-Rod then hit into a 6-4-3 double play. What a first impression. Melky and Johnny Damon tripled, Damon's drove in Cabrera. Jeter grounded out to end the inning. Failed to get an extra run across the plate. Angels 6, Yankees 2

Top 6th -- Petitte retired Rivera, but Mathis doubled. Figgins scored Mathis on a single to left. That was all she wrote for Petitte. Chris Britton came on for the Yankees and retired Teixiera, but gave up a three-run home run to Vlad. Angels 10, Yankees 2

Bottom 6th -- Abreu grounded out, A-Rod flew out and Giambi singled to extend the inning. Garland got Cano to ground into the force at second to end the inning.

Top 7th -- Anderson singled to lead off the inning, but Kendrick flew out to the warning track in right. Rivera flew out to left, and Mathis flew out to Cano.

Bottom 7th -- After a base hit by A-Rod, the Angels decided that Garland had seen enough. The Angels got a force out at second, and supposedly tagged I-Rod out on a questionable call at home. Jeter grounded out to end the inning.

Top 8th -- Figgins leads off with yet another base hit. Figgins scores on a fly ball by Aybar, and miscommunication by Melky and Abreu in right center. Guerrero hit into a double play. Britton gets Hunter to strike out. Angels 12, Yankees 3

Bottom 8th -- No life in the eighth. Abreu grounds out, A-Rod popped up in the infield, and then Sexson lines a base hit to left. Cano struck out and ended the inning. To the ninth.

Top 9th -- Angels threaten in the ninth, but can't score. They're already thinking about the showers anyway. Britton meanwhile, was decent in his first appearance since returning.

Bottom 9th -- The Yankees finally make some noise. The Yankees loaded the bases, including a double by Cano. Damon walked in a run, by which point Sciosia changed pitchers. Jeter drove in a run, but Figgins was still able to get the runner at second. Abreu gets the next RBI, but the lead runner is forced out at second. A-Rod grounded out to end the game. Not a good game at all. Angels 12, Yankees 6: ANGELS WIN

To mr. davidoff, The Angels went Through Pettite and Irod like a hot knife through butter. Get used to it. oh , a stolen base off Irod? they wouldn't have even tried it off molina.

Nice effort turned in by the Yanks huh? The Angels are really impressive but Andy Pettitte needs to give the team a chance for crying out loud.

Britton didn't look so good to me. I know the moderator called his outing "decent" but it was not at all decent to me.

Once again it all comes down to my same old tired comment that if the team doesn't pitch it won't win.

Gimme some CC in '09.

*from previous thread but i wanted to get some other peoples ideas...*

its not that the yankees couldn't beat them (see winning 2/3 at boston), its that they arent as good as they were before and Manny Ramirez, while very moody, was probably one of the best hitters we will ever see and hes no longer there to kill the yankees... if jason bay comes back to bite the yankees in the you know where, then so be it its part of the game... im sure some other fans of other teams were laughing at us when we acquired aaron boone for claussen i believe (?) not sure about that one, but at that point claussen was as far as i remember our top rated lefty in the system...anyway, we all know how that turned out... However, you cant possibly argue that the red sox lineup, in a purely statistical and talent based system, is better than it was a few days ago and if you try to then you are insane...in terms of how it actually turns out, however, they could be better without manny's antics...only time will tell however...as for the small market teams, some of them CAN afford to sign players, they just choose not to...The Steinbrenners take the money they earn from the team and put it back into the team thus creating a consistently profitable and competitive team not to mention giving free money to small market teams who, in several occasions, simply pocket the money rather than spending it on talent, thus continuing the "vicious cycle" of luxury taxes and people worrying about small market teams... this, of course, is only my own opinion and is open to debate from both sides...i will not dispute anyone elses opinion as it is, in fact, only an opinion

Our pitching woes will surface against the better clubs in the league. I understand the pickup of I-Rod but pitching is the need. Our #1 or 2 depending on how he's pitching looked old last night. The Angels are presently the best in the league. They are well coached, selected for their overall abilities and coachability. They play an aggressive game and seem tireless as they run, run and run some more. The Yankees showed non of the above except an old tired team in which only 3 players in the starting lineup were drafted by the club and one we would love to trade. Its sad and hopefully pitchers such as Kennedy, Hughes will get a good shot at making it upon their returns from the DL. Please don't think reupping players like Giambi is the answer. We are getting older not younger.

Just disgusted over their inability to hang with a good club.

WOW..that was a beatdown huh??? That Angels team is stacked! Like I said previously, you're looking at the WS favorites. After this year, Tex, Vlad, K-Rod. Juan Rivera, Garret Anderson, Kelvin Escobar and I believe Lackey are all FA's ( Lackey I believe has a team option ). The Halos are going all in this year, hopefully we can look like them next year. It doesnt get any easier tonight with Ervin Santana on the mound. The team from Anaheim is rolling right now and I dont see any other team in the entire league that is going to stop them...they have it ALL..hitting, fielding, pitching, pen, speed, average, power and a great skipper leading this aggressive team. Kudos to them, they've built a winner in Southern Cal...give props where it's due folks.

One last thing on Man-Ram. A good friend of mine is a huge Sox fan, I wrote him an email about the trade..Ill show you his response and mine.

here it is...

My Buddy:

Good Move
Jul 31 6:11pm
I wanted to keep Manny, but it's like McCain. I liked him in 2000, but now I hate him. Manny isn't the same guy he was the past few weeks... what if he decided not to play in game 7 vs the Yankees in the playoffs? I doubt that, but he wasn't done causing trouble for whatever reason. For a trade we pretty much had to make -- Boston got a great young player. Manny is 36... we weren't going to pick up his option next year anyway for 20million. And Manny will be a free agent. He will probably wind up with the Yanks next year just to spit us and of course he will sign a 4 year deal for 90 million and all his numbers will go down because he's almost 40... I will always love Manny. Best hitter I ever saw. But I think the trade was good for all...

I hear ya, the truth is, you guys had to trade him. You have to admit though, that "trade me for Brett Farve straight up" sign was f*ckin hilarious!

Jay Bay is a solid player, an All Star. He may even put up better stats than Manny from here on out, I dont deny that. But Manny Ramirez was one of the most feared hitters in the history of the game. Even in his off years he still killed the Yanks. Just his name alone made SP's shake. I dont care who you bat behind Papi..Bay, Youk, Drew...SPers are going to pitch around Papi more than any other year since he's been in Beantown. The #4 hitter’s stats may be the same in the end, but Papi is going to miss Man Ram. Also, when the Sox were down big in the playoffs ( last year against Cleveland and in 04 against the Yanks ) it was Manny who gave that ’who cares’ attitude which seemed to relax the clubhouse. Jason Bay has never played a meaningful game in his life, you can only dream that he would be as cool in those spots. Numbers are numbers, but Manny brought a presence to that team...something nobody could possibly replace. If Bay hit 50 HR's this year, and Manny got hurt next week, as a Yankee fan, Im still happy to see him gone.

======================

Ill be gone for the rest of the day/weekend since its my B-Day, party on Wayne..party on Garth! Enjoy the oldtimers day on Sat and the rest of your weekend!

GO YANKS!!!!

As I watched the game last night which could have been closer but I would be grasping at straws to bolster my agrument because its meaningless. Chris Britton being brought up is an indication of our prospects on the farm available for duty in the bigs. Britton has been hit hard and often whwver he has pitched for the yankees. His 87/88 mph fastball is batting practice to these guys.

My hopes are the Yankees bring up the young kids as soon as they are available to give them a taste of the situation. Take the gloves off and let these kids play which I must say, Girardi does do but needs to give Christian more playing time.

Has anyone seen Derek Jeter? Some guy wearing number 2 on his jersey has been playing in his spot especially hitting for him.

Jeter needs to change his number to 6-4-3. He's killing me!

It's all about the pitching folks and that's why I want CC in '09 and I don't care what the Yanks pay him....pay the fat man from California!
Give him a lifetime supply of Cannoli (after his playing days are over), I don't care, this team is still short a dominant pitcher or two.

Let's say the Yanks make the playoffs, does anyone feel good about going into a short series with Joba, Moose and Pettitte right now? I love Joba and think he will be fine, but right now you are just as likely to get a full blown clunker from Moose and Andy as you are a good game and that is too inconsistent for a contender.

The Yanks bullpen could be warn out by the end of the weekend and that's not good news at all.

Man, Pudge got hosed at the plate last night, even though the run didn't matter, it was still a horrible call, one of the worst I've seen in a while.

Oh boy, you have to believe the Yanks will be shown another quick exit if they get into the playoffs. The Angels just have their number, great to watch. 9 more games to go.

Jim, the Yanks are worth alot of moola, but even they can't afford to give CC all the canoli he can eat. Be reasonable.

The Yanks made great moves to bolster their chances to get it the playoffs. Once in, just about anything can happen, but realistically, this team is not likely to be playing late into October. We all know this is a patch thread starting rotation, and those do not earn you a world series ring. This series could be real ugly the rest of the weekend. IMO, the Angels are clearly the best team in baseball (I see no weakness whatsoever), and we simply don't stack up well against them. Even though they have little to play for at this point, it would be a small miracle if we split this series. It is what it is...

1 down for the Angels and 6 more wins to go! Don't think that the Angels aren't going to win all of their games against the Yanks?

And don't worry about the Red Sox. They won't be 10 out after these next 14 games!

2-12 for your guys next 14. Sox back in 1st led by their newbie in left JR Bay!!!!!!

Oh, I forgot to ad:

Once they get the 0-7 schlacking from the Angels. I'll be rooting for the Yanks to win the wildcard so they get them first in the play-offs! Have to keep up the "one and Done" routine that the Yanks seem to have down pat!

but I'm sure Yankeeville won't make the play-offs this year anyway!

------hey, it's a transition year....right?

Since the addition of Nady, Marte' and I-Rod the Yankees have won one game and lost four. With how the Angels are playing and who we have pitching the next few days I'm not optimistic that we will even win one against the Angels. Mr. Un-clutch A-Rod has to step up and not just hit home runs when the Yanks are up by six runs like he did against Baltimore on Wednesday. He's beginning to remind me of Dave Winfield!!!! I'm glad Manny is gone, but either way it doesn't help the Yankees pitch better or hit more consistently.
