Here's Brian Cashman's take on Hideki Matsui and the chances of his returning: "I wouldn’t say I’m optimistic at this point. I think it speaks a lot to his heart. the doctors looked at him and recommended surgery. he wants to give this another try."
Basically, at the first significant swelling, that's it for Matsui.

As for Posada, Cashman said they need to decide what the best course of action is. "Can he help us in all aspects at some period of time this year? Can he help us in some aspects more than others, or is it complete shutdown mode?"
