Gameday Live 90: Rays at Yankees

Good evening baseball fans. Marcus Henry is back to take through the first of two critical games against the Rays. The Yankees, who sit five games over .500 take on a Rays team that can no longer be called a suprise. The Rays are here to stay folks.

Yankees (47-42) vs. Tampa Bay Rays (55-33), 7:05 p.m.

Starters: Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.22) for the Yankees and Scott Kazmir (7-3, 2.63) for the Rays.

Last starts: Pettitte took a beating in his last outing against the Red Sox last week as he got battered for six runs and nine hits over 4 2/3 innings. Pettitte was stellar in his previous four starts, however, as he went 4-0, giving up just three runs over 27 innings. Kazmir was so-so in his last start, giving up four runs in five innings in the Rays 7-6 win over the Red Sox. Kazmir, who walked four and gave up seven hits, didn't factor in the decision.

Good times, bad times: The good; It's safe to say the Yankees salvaged their season with their comeback win over the Red Sox on Sunday. Robinson Cano appears to be well on his way back normal. The 27-year-old second baseman is 13-for-39 with 9 RBIs since June 27.

The bad: Kazmir is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in his last three starts against the Yankees. Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi are a combined 7-for-27 against him in that span. Although Pettitte is 14-4 with a 3.84 ERA against the Rays in his career, he has lost three of his last four to them.

Bottom 1st: Akinori Iwamura grounded out to second on the first pitch. Carl Crawford flied out to left on the first pitch for the second out. Crawford was 11-for-21 coming into that at bat. B.J. Upton stroked a ground-rule double down the right field line. Carlos Pena struck out swinging for the final out. A nine-pitch inning for Pettitte.

Bottom 1st: Melky Cabrera struck out swinging for the first out. His at bat was interesting as he lost his bat on the second strike. It flew into the stands and hit someone. Derek Jeter struck out looking for out number two. Bobby Abreu grounded out to second for the third out.
Yankees 0, Rays 0

Way to go Andy! Great game from him, Jeter and Cano too. To me, the only goat of the game is Bobby Meacham, who has not impressed me at all this season.

Andy was very impressive and it was a great bounce back game from him.

Back in the bronx pettitte! Good game! Jeter great play at Top 7th was amazing!

Jim A. you stole my thunder.

As great a game as it was... the only thing that i can think of is that Bobby Meacham is going to get someone killed out there.

Wasn't he the same guy that was the 2nd guy thrown out at the plate on the same play following Dale Berra home.... lol!

I can see his judgement has not improved 25 years later.

DOC

Not just off last night's performance, but for what he's been doing most of the year, do you guys feel Andy will be asked back? I'd have to think so, especially if he continues to ask for only a year or two at a time.

And what if Mussina continues to impress, having apparently learned to adjust to diminished skills? If he'd accept another two year deal, would you guys want him back?

I have to think that if they're looking as impressive at the end of the year as they have up to now, that the Yanks would want them back - even if they sign CC. IPK may need another year in Triple A, Hughes may be a health risk. So that would leave the Yanks with a rotation of CC (if they get him), Wang, Joba, and ....Pettitte and Moose? If Hughes gets and stays healthy, or one of the MiL comes on big time, the Yanks would have some nice problems, one I think we'd all like to see. But I'm curious to know how everyone else here feels.

I had to leave yesterday evening just when you guys were getting warmed up. So let me please drop a few other names from the past. How many of you had seen or heard of Celerino Sanchez or Elliot Maddox?! Maddox looked like he might become a really fine CF, hit over .300 his first full year with the Yanks and in limited time the following year before he tore up his knee, I believe. I think he finished up a few years later with the Mets. Sanchez looked good at first too, playing a very good 3B, but I can't recall what happened to him. I only know that he faded quickly out of the picture.

Living in NYC at the time, I went to quite a few games in the late 60's/early 70's. I was just out of school, just out the Army and working my first job. It was dead easy to get seats at the gate, but my wife, working at Banker's Trust, was also able to get great corporate box seats at the last moment whenever there were no takers - which was pretty often!

I saw Steve Kline pitch a 1 - 0 shutout against Gaylord Perry, with Roy White delivering Horace Clarke with a 9th inning single to center to win it. We were right behind the visitor's dugout! What seats and what good times, even though the Yankees were not going anywhere.

How about Lindy McDaniel. Does anyone recall having seen him pitch with the Yankees? A pretty good reliever for a time.

My wife, being a good sport, would sometimes come with me to some of those games in which we got box seat tickets, but all she was really interested in was watching crowd reactions and which players were Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich!

From the NY Daily News:
Scott Kazmir is pitching at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night. Can Victor Zambrano be far behind?

In their never-ending quest to find starting pitching, the Yankees plan to send a scout to watch the free-agent righty throw sometime this week, according to a source.

Ah yanks61, you are shaking some cobwebs.
Lindy McDaniel had that big goosestepping delivery to home plate.
If memory serves me he started a few games as well.
Both Eli and Celerino showed a lot of early promise and then fizzled out.
If nothing else back then, the Yanks had some names that I just loved to say....
"See ya later" Danny Cater
Frank Tepedino
Gary Wasleswski
and as Bill White used to say "Challie" Spikes.

Truth be told, I was attending more Mets games in those days.
(I know, sacrilege). Had a friend who's dad had season tickets which included pre/post game admits to the Diamond(?-was that the name of it?) Club, and I never passed up an opportunity to use my fake id to rub elbows with the sartorial splendid Bob Murphy (Huh ho) in the Club Bar after a game.
Nobody rolled the words "Huh ho, buhDee Harrelson" quite like Bob.

yanks61,

What was your wifes interest in Peterson and Kekich? Did she have something she wanted to "swap" with them?

Chip -

Zambrano's minor league ERA is high even on a High Ricther scale

Credit is due to Andy and Mussina
They have picked up the slack for Wang better than I thought they would

If I were the Yankees I would treat this season by Mussina as a last gasp (think Guidry in 1985) and offer him arbitration and watch him break down elsewhere and collect the two picks

You KNOW Mussina will end up with the Cardinals and under Duncan win 30 games

Sully,

I'm with you - I don't care if Mussina wins 25 games and a Cy Young this year - if I'm Cashman I'm not bringing him back.

I would also like to thank the NY Mets for beating up on Timmy Lincecum - it will make Chris Russo's day slightly more miserable after a month of calling him the best pitcher in baseball.

On another note, the Rich Harden trade in theory was a good one for the Cubs, but does it shock anyone that after finally waiving the white flag on Mark Prior the Cubbies essentially traded for...Mark Prior?

Chip,

That won't help.....he can't get off the subject of Wimbeldon. Remember Tennis is the only sport he has a whiff of knowledge about......and I said a Whiff. He claims a flood of support from listeners about his on and on discussions about " The Greatest Wimbeldon Match Ever". Not realizing.....its still just tennis. Yesterday I won the "Greatest Horseshoe Match Ever".......anyone want to hear me talk about it?

BIG WIN LAST NIGHT!!! The big game hunter AKA Andy was doing this thing! Great play by Jeter to keep the Rays off the board and some nice hitting by Jeter to pick up Melk and Gardner in the 3rd with his two out double!

Speaking of having to pick up, WOW did those RH AB's look ugly for Melk or what? I was yelling at the TV when he couldnt get that damn bunt down. The HR he hit meant nothing to me after the failed bunt attempt and the swinging K's that were 5 feet over his head, looked like he was fly fishing. Melk is really running my patience thin. I like the power surge this year, but he has to show more progress in situational hitting. I still think he's a stellar defender, made a couple great catches in CF last night, and I still think he will be a solid MLB OF when he hits his prime ( 20-25 HR + 15-20 SB + .280-.300 hitter ), but its becoming very hard to stick up for him in the short term.

Now to he Burnett deal. I dont think the deal is as far fetched as it might seem. The Jays covet control pitchers with sound mechanics, McCutchen is that. He’s now managed to compile a BB/9 of 2.04 in 172 minor league innings, not including this year. His last turn out he pitched a gem, complete game for AAA. Here's the clip from his start on the 5th =

=========
Danny McCutchen got the start and was absolutely ballin. In 9 shutout frames, Dan scattered 5 hits and allowed 0 walks while striking out 10. He might be ready. I honestly can’t take Rasner or Ponson, and so I would be ok if DM replaces either of the two.
=========

Danny boy's overall stats at AAA are the best for any of our starters.

59 IP
62 Hits
9 BB
45 K
3.36 ERA
1.20 WHIP

His K/BB ratio is at 5! Thats excellent and something that the Jays love in their SPers.

AJ is an elite talent "WHEN HEALTHY", that sentence will be inscribed on his tombstone. He's in the last year of his contract and will opt out. The Jays also would get a stellar defender in Gonzo. He's not gonna ever hit .300, but will play gold glove caliber D, plus he's young cheap option. The Jays have played musical chairs with their SS position over the past decade and are getting nothing out of their current tandem of Eckstein ( 9 E's in 51 starts + .273 BA ) or Scutaro ( 5 E's in 18 starts + .258 Avg ). Both players are on the wrong side of 30 so I could see the Jays, who value pitching and D, making that deal.

While we're at it, lets check in on the other kids..

Ian Kennedy, in his return to AAA, labored a little through 4 innings of work. The 23 year-old righty from USC gave up 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks in 4 innings of work. He did also strike out 4, but looks like he may need a few more starts in the minors before he is ready to return to the majors. ( from MVN )

JB Cox gave up multiple runs for the 3rd time in his last 4 appearances. He surrendered 2 on 4 hits in 2 2/3 innings, bringing his ERA up to 3.74. His atypical 2-5 groundout to flyout ratio indicates that maybe he was leaving the ball up in the zone. ( from MVN )

Austin Jackson is doing OK, with a .274 Avg, 8 HR, 14 SB. I say leave him in Trenton all year and start him in Scranton next year. He still looks like 2 years away before we can hand him the keys to LF/RF. That time table may work out good because Damon and Matsui will be gone in 2 years.

Tabata looks to be a little further back with a .248 AVG and .630 OPS, one of the worst in both cats on the AA team.

LH SP Phil Coke's numbers look very solid. 7-3...2.86 ERA...94 IP...82 K...1.33 WHIP. The Whip is a little high, but has kept the ball in the park.

Melancon is still dealin in AA. 36 IP...1.98 ERA..0.77 WHIP..37 K. He's still going 2 IP+ every time out, not sure why the yanks are doing this?

Zach McAllister is still dominating Tampa. On the 4th he went 8 IP, 9 K, 2 ER. In 43 IP Zach has a 2.47 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 32 K and only 5 BB. Very impressive!

Down a little further in Charleston, our future C combo is still doing very well. Montero is still killing the ball and Romine is holding his own, both are around .300. 3B prospect Liard is showing power, but needs to hit for better AVG.

On the pitching side "mini pedro" AKA Heredia is still dealin, 2.66 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 58K in 61 IP. Betances is still getting his feet underneath him. In 60IP, batters are only hitting .190 off of him and he has 70K's, but is also leading the team in BB (41) and WP's (5). My god if this kid can just STOP GROWING so he can master his control, we would have an ACE!

Well thats all, there were some more prospects doing well in SI and in the dominican leagues, if you want more on them, go to MVN and check out Eric's last entry ( http://mvn.com/milb-yankees/ ).

Nudge - very true.

It just would have been sickening to listen to him today had Linc gone out and pitched well last night. Now he's going to have to at least let the callers have some fun with him after months of saying he wouldn't take Wright and Reyes for him, going on and on about the SI cover, better than Johan...yadda yadda yadda. He'll be a good sport about it I think.

And then he'll bury us with tennis.

Im with you guys, let Moose graze in greener pastures. I think the Harden deal is good for the Cubbies, they got screwed by Rich Hill this year. Now they can get screwed by Rich Harden in the near future. They needed to make a big splash though after the CC deal. Love seeing the Cubs and Brew Crew going for it!

I dont listen to Mike and the MD any longer, but I do stop by every once in a while when they get their teeth kicked in..I may have to stop by today for old times sake.

ESPN reporting that Donnie Baseball will replace Mike Easler as hitting coach of the Dodgers after the All-Star break. Guess he's got the wife thing more or less sorted out. Glad to hear it.

They're also saying that the D-backs are "thinking about" signing Bonds to help their struggling lineup. Not sure that qualifies as news.

Anyone else see AP's reaction to Jeter's play in the 7th last night? I thought he was going to throw out his arm. That was the single most violent motion I've seen from him all year.

DC-

I'm sure Joba liked Petts celebration. And I'd have to counter -S. Duncan's forearm bash could rank as an extreme violent motion, that is....when he was with the team.

Last nights win is as crucial as winning todays game - then onto PITand TOR.

Heading into TOR, at least AROD can escape the divorce controversy by exploring some of TOR fine adult entertainment options.....he hasn't done so yet, correct? Haha

DRU: Thanks for holding things down on prospect news. Sorry I've been absent everyone. I moved from NJ back to LI last week and started a new job on Monday. I should be on more often in the near future, but might become more of a weekend blogging warrior.

Congrats on the new job HYD!. Its been pretty slow at my new job since everyone is already involved in projects. Once the next wave hits, Ill be MIA myself. So does this mean no more Trenton Thunder games? Who's gonna give us reports next year when McAllister, Laird, Montero, Tabata, Romine, Heredia and hopefully Betances, make their way up there in 09??? DAMN U HYD!!!

BIG game tonight to send a message. That Jackson kid for the Rays throws GAS! He shut us down early in the year, hopefully our LH heavy lineup will take care of that. Tonights lineup should be..

Garnder
Jeter
Bobby
Arod
Giambi
Posada
Cano
Molina
Melk

Wilson has more power from the left side, but with Ponson and Posada as battery mates, the Rays would run all over us. I think Molina behind the plate is more valuable than Wilson's 3-4 AB's. What do you guys think?

Good luck with the new job HYD and the new residence. :-)

Thanks. I'll still go to some Thunder games, but it will be more like 5 - 10 a year and not 15 - 25. So far, so good with the new job and I'll always be a Long Islander, so it was a happy transition back.

I understand things being slow DRU...I wish that was the case for me. It's my third day and I've already written/reviewed/revised 4 different reports. My new company doesn't believe in ramping you up slowly and in a sense, I love that. Weird, I know.

Honestly, I would prefer being very busy from the get go. I cant stand not having something to do at all times. I got used to getting beat up everyday for 9 years that I actually miss it. Its too laid back here.

I had orientation with someone from Bear. Did you know Dawn-Marie Vasco?

Islander505, didn't Bill White call a great game?!

Nudge, if she had wanted to, my wife could have swapped some hot stuff with anybody some 38 years ago! Alas, we all get older. You'll see yourself someday. In fact, though, like lots of ladies I know, she just loved reading about juicy scandals. So seeing in person and from not so far away, the participants to a rather unusual one (family swap, anyone?) was just the ticket for her.

Well, I see that Moose has worn out his welcome here, regardless of how well he does from here on out. Some pitchers have 'recycled' themselves from being power pitchers to junk ballers - Frank Viola, for instance. But I can't recall at what point in his career he made the transition. I take it that Chip and Sully don't think the Moose we're seeing this year is having anything more than a 'last hurrah.'

Am I to assume, however, that everybody's on board for re-signing Andy?

I definitely would like to see Andy return, not only because I like him but because at 36 years old and still effective, he is a rare breed as he doesn't mind the one year contracts which work very well for the Yanks.

HYD: Congrats on the job and the move. What part of LI are you living in? I grew up in Holbrook.
I can still hear the old radio ads: "About Long Island, brought you by Long Islanders....The Grumman Corporation". They played that ad incessantly when I was a kid, now I'd love to hear it again since I haven't lived there for over 20 years.
I still miss a lot about Long Island/NY: Diners, Bakeries, good pizza and great Deli's. You just can't find that stuff in Virginia, you only learn to convince yourself it's just as good after about 10 years or more.
Don't worry about the new job, you'll be blogging during the day like the rest of us as soon as you are settled in.

Yanks61: I wouldn't say Moose has worn out his welcome but the fact is he is almost 40 and is basically pitching with smoke and mirrors and is too stubborn to admit he's made some kind of change in his approach. The old Moose (in Baltimore) had a fastball that was around 90 MPH and when you change up that pitch with a knuckle curve and mix in some others as well, it worked great for him but the problem last year was his curveball was 84 MPH and his fastball was 86MPH so hitters could guess wrong and still clobber him. This year he won't admit it but he seems to have slowed his curve down some so that there is a bigger difference and he can out think hitters which a smart guy like him should be doing.

I am an admitted anti-Moose guy mainly because I never liked the way he never seemed to pick up his teammates if they made an error behind him and he seemed to duck the blame a lot but he has changed a bit and has actually lightened up some and I do tip my hat to him as the Yanks would be DOA without him this season.

Jim,

I'm split on Andy. He has these strings of effective starts (like last night) but he also has these strings of really awful starts - and the awful ones seem to be outnumbering the good ones lately. Now look, if he's willing to come back on a 1 year $11 mil deal, sure, why the heck not. But if not - I say go after Sabathia or Yu Darvish. Then again, I would go after those guys either way.

yanks61

"Islander505, didn't Bill White call a great game?!"

ABSOLUTELY!!
And no better straight man for the Scooter ever sat in the booth.
He knew how to push every one of Rizzuto's buttons.
It was a sad day for baseball broadcasting when Bill White got kicked upstairs into American League Hierarchy.

last comment was me

Ok, I have officially today been allowed to use My alt Moniker by the man himself so here is the start.

I talked to Gene Micheal today for a lengthly time and we discussed every thing I mean every thing baseball related.

so I will give you all just a tibet of trade possibilities we was shooting the breeze with
==============================================
"Note - DUE TO TAMPERING RULES THE CONVERSATIONS EXPRESSED BY THE BLOGGER AND THE SUBJECT HAD TO BE ALTERED FOR BLOGGING/PRESS PURPOSES.
==============================================

possible trades.

Gene Acknowledged that something has to be done there is no getting around it. I reminded him that in his hey day he did not make it his purpose to go after just a big name but rather a "fit" for his roster.

LH OF from Clev was viewed as the perfect bench guy.

BC stated that while he loves this guy so much there is too many LH Bats on the bench . Stick agreed but only to a degree and reminded me about Paul O'Neil.

RH Bat from Pitt - this would be all I will say as all parties agreed on this player.

As for Burnett , while the jury is still out on McCutchen on being a SP or RP the jury is not out on him being dealt the team still views him high. but if they could turn some corners and offer other players then perhaps a deal can be done.

When I reminded my now GOOD friend Stick about his ability to make deals with lesser knowns to good results he could not hold back his glee.

Today is Giambi Mustache day

yanks61,

See thats why Mrs Nudge is a decsde younger than me.....so that she can carry the load going forward!

Russo was sounding like the jerk he is when I can in from lunch. What else is to be expected. High School radio is High School radio.

Yanks 61 and Isle 505:
I agree 100% about Bill White, I loved listening to him, Scooter and Frank Messer. They were a great trio and I loved every game they did together and I also thought it was a very sad day when Bill White left to become President of the (I thought) National League.

Now Frank and Scooter are gone and you never see Bill White anymore....what a shame.

Gene Michael's New Friend: You are the man...buy the man some cigars or cookies, whatever he wants, just keep the info coming.

Chip: I agree about going after Sabathia regardless of whether or not Andy is still with the team next year.

HYD - sorry, dont know her. As for the other topic's, Ill be quick since Im home now ( hate when the Yanks play weekday, days. There's nothing but crap on TV!!! lol )

- Im all for bringing Andy back
- Im all for letting Moose walk, thanks for the good times Mike!
- Still up in the air about CC, like 60/40 for getting him.
- Stick is my idol, followed by Billy Bean.
- Lets hope the RH Bat from Pitt is Bay and not Nady.
- White and Scooter were poetry in motion, a gift from the baseball gods! They were the voices of my baseball childhood, even in my parents backyard. "Bases Loaded for Mattingly, bottom of the 9th against KC ( loved beating them )..The pitch, HOLY COW, A DEEP DRIVE TO DEAD CENTER"

GREAT WIN BY THE YANKS!!!! SWEPT THE GARBAGE OUT OF THE BRONX!!! Now we have to finish strong going into the break, get some of our boys back and who knows???????

GO YANKS!!!!!

ABOUT LONG ISLAND? I have a few of those as mp3's.. my buddy and i were searching for those for about 10 years.. FINALLY got someone who had a few.. hit me up with your email ill send one to ya.. its quite a trip to hear those things again.
