Closing fast

Andy Pettitte said after yesterday's game that even two weeks ago, when he said: "We stink right now," he still figured the Yankees would turn things around and make the playoffs, probably by winning the division. But even he admitted yesterday that they have narrowed the gap with the Red Sox faster than he expected.

Alex Rodriguez got hit yesterday, but since Craig Hansen was wild all outing, it didn't create quite the stir that Kevin Youkilis getting hit Friday by Joba Chamberlain did.

Trade deadline moves are getting lots of attention, whether it's Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte, both one day into their tenure as Yankees, or Yankee target Jarrod Washburn.

One more game left at Fenway: 8 p.m. start.

According to the New York Post the Steinbrenners have given Brian Cashman permission to add Jarrod Washburn's salary to the payroll. This was the last hurdle to be cleared in bringing him in.

The deal will be completed by the end of the weekend with Kei Igawa going to Seattle for Washburn. Washburn will then replace Darrell Rasner in the rotation.

Even after the revised trade was made public the sentiment around baseball is still that the Yankees made out like bandits. According to one NL GM who had interest in Nady "The Yankees killed them."

Also, just read where according to Ken Rosenthal the Yankees are close to bringing in Texas catcher Gerald Laird. No word on what will be going back to the Rangers.

Sorry for the multiple posts but ESPN.com is running a rumor that the Yankees may swing a trade with the San Fran Giants where they would bring back both Randy Winn and Benji Molina.

Winn only makes sense if the team is moving Melky Cabrera. There is a rumor that the Yankees would be willing to include Cabrera in a deal for Washburn if Seattle would consider sending back prospect OF Waldamir Balentine.

In theory - and theory only - the Yankees could come out of this week with the following lineup:

Damon - DH
Jeter - SS
Abreu - RF
Alex - 3b
Giambi - 1st
Nady - LF
Cano - 2b
Benji Molina - C
Winn - CF

Chip if you're right about this recent trade rumor, then I have to say that Cashman is a genius. Randy Winn is probably OK at best but I can see him as a significant improvement over the Melkman. I don't know the monies involved but I'd do it for the right price.

Kevin Youkilis getting hit Friday by Joba Chamberlain did.

... Youkilis didn't get hit, the pitch up and it hit his bat. None of the pitches Joba's thrown to Youkilis have hit him.

Chip,
I responded on the last thread that I thought there was no way the Mariners would take Igawa straight up for Washburn and I guess that is not the case now. I don't really want to see Melky go in that deal and I really don't care to have Randy Winn in CF, but I know Cashman has never really thought much of Melky so I can see it happening.

I'm anxious to hear from my man Rick Keyes on the Yanks trade(s), what do you think Rick?

What 2 weeks can do in Yankee world.

Yanks need to continue with hot bats tonight in order to back up an average start tonight with Ponson. Albeit 5-1, if he gets into his usual bases loaded, 1 out trouble, red sox are a team that can capitalize.

However, Cano is white hot, and the whole team is producing with 2 outs.

A huge statement game tonight

Hey troll, didn't you say how the big bad saux were going to sweep the Yanks??? Wow, it seems it may actualy be the other way around, which must kill you! Too bad you don't have the b@lls to come on here after running your mouth wimp!

I'm afraid I don't have much faith in Sindey Ponson holding down the fort tonight and tossing a decent start.

In fact, I think he's going to get hammered. And the Yanks will have some trouble with Lester.

My hope is that Ponson can keep the game relatively close and the Yanks unload against the Red Sox bullpen.

But the 8-game win streak has to end sooner or later - so tonight is probably the night.

And I'll say it again, I don't want Washburn. I hope the deal falls through for one reason or another.

I think the only hope I really have for tonight is that the Yanks will have two RH batters in the lineup that they didn't have the last time they faced Lester and maybe the confidence they are feeling right now which change the mindset of the LH batters such as Cano.

I don't have a whole lot of faith in Ponson, but you never know what can happen.

Oh ye of little faith......

NORAD has reported a Margaret Hamilton sighting in the skies just west of Fenway Park. (s that C-Rod is riding shotgun?l).

Ponson scatters 5 hits over 7 innings.
A Rod goes yard..
Nady 3-4....4 RBI's
Yanks win 8-2.

Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

There is talk that if the Washburn talks fail that the Yanks will talk to KC in trading Melky for Bannister.

Apparently the team wants Melk out of here.

Seattle Turned him down

Hopefully he can produced the same results like Cano when Seattle turned him down
