It hasn't been a pleasant homecoming so far for the Yankees. Anything but, to be honest. Let's see, they were swept by the Tigers.
They had to place Alex Rodriguez on the disabled list for his right quad strain.
They're still waiting for a final analysis on Jorge Posada's right shoulder strain.
Phil Hughes struggled, then they thought he had a mild oblique strain and it turns out to be a stress fracture in a rib.
And Ian Kennedy pitched poorly again, almost certainly earning him a trip to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Brian Bruney, who opted against surgery on the torn Lisfranc ligament in his right foot, has had a rough week all around. His uncle passed away after having a heart attack, and he's flying to the West Coast today for services.
I'm taking today and tomorrow off, but we will have people updating the blog -- no worries there. Happy Friday.

Has the 2008 Yankee baseball season started yet?
Don't worry Yankee fans, the great Darrell Rasner will put a stop to this. Cash, if not trading for Santana was your idea, what were you thinking? This looks like a 5 year rebuilding plan to me.
So Rasner pitches for Hughes, who pitches for Kennedy?
Igawa? Karstens? Me?
To be great in this situation, Rasner only has to give us innings and keep the guys within reasonable distance of being in the game. Nothing spectacular. He is not being touted as the future face of the franchise.
All the better for him and for us.
Chuckie,
I have never seen you pitch but I've seen Igawa and Rasner so all I have to say to you is....ice that arm, you're going in!
Oops, I meant Rasner and Karstens.
Diane: Whoever is pitching for the Yankees they need to do more than keep us close. Why do I say this? Because the relief pitching except for a couple of guys, $uck$ and the hitting without Arod and Posada is woefully inadequate to make up the difference. Coupled with the fact that Damon, Giambi and Cano are non existent. This represents 5/9's of the batting order not producing.
It may be early in the season but I believe that time is a wasting. Moves should be made to dump some of the dead wood such as Giambi and Damon. There is no way that the Yankees can find enough starting pitching to resurrect this team. I haven't given up but the mountain is getting higher as I get closer to it.
Make this year a transition year. Find out about the minor leaguers and move from there with a clear mind for next year. Trading or dumping Giambi and Damon would allow for more playing time for Gardner, Duncan and Matsui. It would improve our defense and change our offense around. Since Giambi and Damon are not hitting than what are we losing their defensive gloves and great throwing arms. They are taking valuable at bats and playing time away from younger players who may have something to offer.
Larry M.
I agree with some of your points but I do not think that "the relief pitching except for a couple of guys $uck$". I think the bullpen -- overall, not every single guy -- has been a bright spot in the general gloom.
Diane: Fair enough. I hope your right and I'm wrong. How do you feel about Giambi and Damon from whay you have observed this year, so far.
Larry,
Not good.
I think Damon is hurt and I am afraid that Giambi may be done.
I hope I'm wrong on both and that they will be brilliant starting tonight.
Diane: I'm sure that you have heard the comment, " from your lips to God's ears." Unfortunately, this does not work in professional baseball. Divine intervention in sports is not existent but maybe tonight for your sake. Giambi turns on a fastball faster than 89mph and Damon throws a guy out at the plate from LF.
They are both good to the fans from what I hear but we need wins. As a Yankee fan I hope your right.
Yes Larry on that we agree, Divine Providence is not about to intervene on behalf of our team. How about LUCK? Don't know if you believe in luck, either, but one of Joe Torre's favorite quotes was that it's better to be lucky than good (I don't know who he was quoting). I wouldn't mind some good luck falling on Damon, Giambi, and the whole squad tonight. Wang himself may not need it the way he's been going.
Remember that ugly win that some were complaining about?
No win could be too ugly for me right now.
Good weekend to take off Kat. With the 3 best Seattle pitchers going against the life-less Yanks. You look like you'd just be covering another visiting team sweep at the Stadium coming up this weekend!!!!
Hey it's transition year.....right?
Ooo...I think I just cracked a rib. Now how'd that happen?

Diane: I believe that the better teams and or better players create their so call luck by having superior talent. Thus controling, the flow of the game and putting the other team on their heals by forcing actions by the other team which produce negative results bad pitching, fielding etc.
The hard part about this year as a transition year is that there is too much hype going around the staduim for it last season to be a transition year.
Diane is right the SP needs to keep us in the game until the 6th inning. even if it's 0-0 honestly i feel when Kennedy get his first win i will erase a heavy burden then he will be ok
I guess thats the new buzz word huh? Transition Year. That can explain everything that goes wrong. Problem is next year looks worse than this since no holes are being filled this year and next year there are more opening. But I guess calling it a transition year distracts from how bad a shape thing really are in.
