Posada expected to avoid DL

Jorge Posada is expected to stay off the DL. The MRI on his right shoulder was examined by the Royals team doctor, and he diagnosed a shoulder strain. The MRI was sent on to Dr. Stuart Hershon in NY (the Yankees team doctor) and Dr. James Andrews, as precautionary measures. But Posada was clearly relieved, as were the Yankees. Posada is available to DH. He took batting practice and is fielding ground balls at first base (they don't want him to throw yet). He also would be able to catch if something happened to Jose Molina.

"It's good news that it's not worse," Posada said. "Your shoulder is part of what I do. I had surgery in [2001], and I was worried that it was going to be the same."

Girardi said: "I really believe that he'll be back there in a week, and hopefully a little bit earlier."
Posada said he thinks four or five days, but it depends how quickly he gets his arm strength back.

There's nothing new on Derek Jeter. They're basically not letting him do much until he gets to Boston. Girardi called Jeter playing Friday a best case scenario.

The Yankees called up Alberto Gonzalez, and he is in the lineup at shortstop tonight. He's a better defender than Wilson Betemit, and Girardi thinks he can handle the bat OK.

Gonzalez said he was told last night by Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Dave Miley: "I was excited. I felt very content. I didn't know what would happen, but I was excited to be coming up."
Gonzalez said he'd seen on TV that Jeter was hurt, but didn't know how serious it was.
There's been no official word on the roster move. Girardi said that Morgan Ensberg had done something to his ankle on Monday when he landed on the bag funny. So I guess Ensberg could be headed to the DL.

Here's the lineup for tonight's game:

Yankees
Damon DH
Cano 2B
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Giambi 1B
Molina C
Cabrera CF
Gonzalez SS

Kennedy P

Royals
Gathright CF
Grudzielanek 2B
Teahen LF
Guillen RF
Butler DH
Gordon 3B
Gload 1B
Buck C
Pena SS

Greinke RHP

I think this might be the first time that Tony Pena Jr. was considered the better offensive SS in a game.

Shelley Duncan optioned to AAA - which makes absolutely no sense - yes he has options and so from that standpoint it does stand to reason that he would be sent out - but with Damon at DH and Matsui in LF the Yankees have exactly 0 reserve outfielders. If one of the starting OF go down then Damon would have to vacate the DH spot and the pitcher would have to hit.
