Joba, Giambi available

By ERIK BOLAND
Joe Girardi said both Joba Chamberlain and Jason Giambi could play tonight if needed. Giambi (groin), Girardi said, was being held out because of the chilly temperature, which by mid-game could dip into the high 30's. He said he expected Giambi to be ready for tomorrow afternoon's game in Kansas City.

As for Chamberlain, Girardi said he would not hesitate to use the reliever tonight.

"Even though he threw two innings yesterday, he only threw 16 pitches," Girardi said. "We could go back to him tonight."

As for Jose Molina replacing Jorge Posada, Girardi said that was more a product of having the quick night/day turnaround [the Yankees will fly to Kansas City following tonight's game] than Posada's stiff right shoulder.

"I'm fine," Posada said a few minutes ago in the clubhouse. "It's healing. It's still not 100 percent but we're good enough to play."

Barring any more pregame news, Adam Ronis will take it from here as your live in-game blogger for tonight. Enjoy. Oh, and be sure to check out Anthony Rieber and Jim Baumbach's Final Score blog on newsday.com, where Rieber captivates with his description of what he did on a rare day off during baseball season. My guess is he caves and at the very least checks the score of tonight's NCAA title game.

Oh no...here we go. Come on Girardi, let's see if someone else can step up and get big outs in the 8th INN for us. Try not to burn him out 'Mini Joe T'. Its not just the 16 pitches, its warming up, coming out, throwing pitches, sitting back down, warming back up, throwing pitches...all while it was 40 degrees out last night. Give the kid a freakin day off for Darwin's sake!

Mac,

Looks like Joe G and you are on diffeent pages about Duncans playing time. If Giambi is out for any length of time and Duncans role stays unchanged I think that says what they think of him longterm. Although Betemit isn't exactly makking a case for himself either. I would have thought Ensberg would be getting a shot with Giambi in question. Its still early though and things can always change. - Nudge"

Mr. Nudge,

Actually your wrong. Since Giambi is hurt and since neither Duncan or Betemit have had much to offer. I would go with Betemit since he can bat Lefty against Hammels. I would not be surprised if Duncan gets put in later in the game though if Hammels gets knocked around.

So i agree with Girardi on this decision. But if Duncan starts playing well (like he did last year and in spring training) he will get the playing time i told everyone on this blog i said he will get.

duncan will not be in the game he departed with Hughes to KC earlier today. remember Dunca n is on suspension as well
