Yanks up 5-0 after five

The Yankees lead 5-0 after five innings. Chien-Ming Wang had a much better start today than last time. He pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and two walks. Edwar Ramirez got the final out of the fourth, Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless inning and Darrell Rasner is now on the mound.

Let me just relax, put my feet up on my desk and keep reading "Kyle Farnsworth pitched a scoreless inning". I just want to enjoy it because it's as rare as seeing Rosie O'Donnell with her mouth shut.

Make that 6-0

Jason Lane bombed one

Jeter is on w/ M&MD right now. You can bet he will say nothing of interest- which is a good thing.

Farnsworth = Igawa = Worthless space of body heat.
End of story!

Rick,
Agreed.

Jim A

I can't see how any RATIONAL Yankee fan can see it any other way! It's as plain as the nose on your face.

From the previous thread of Farnsworth and Atlanta...

He did indeed pitch well for Atlanta
But he also wet the bed in the playoffs letting up a grandslam to Berkman and a game tying shot in the 9th in the game where the Braves were ultimately eliminated.

In other words the Braves entrusted him with a 6-1 8th inning lead to force a game 5...

And they went home that day
Imagine how beloved he'd be in New York if he did that!

Rick,
I haven't seen anyone on here who doesn't agree. We all HOPE those two will get it together but nobody really expects it. I think the best compliment I've heard about Igawa is that he had two good outings in a row so hopefully he can be traded for something.

Sully,
Yes, I do recall Farnsworth having that meltdown. It seems like some guys (Farnsworth, Lidge) do not recover from that type of meltdown.

I don't think Lidge has cleared his mind of the bomb that Pujols hit off him and I don't think that ball has landed yet.

I always hear Rivera say you have to forget about it and clear your mind of it and maybe there is something to that.

For all those "Hughes can never succeed with just 2 pitches", I have an article for you...

Peavy won the CY Young last year with just a fastball and slider. Even though they both throw 95, Im not saying Phil is as good as Jake right now. I think Peavy is the best SP in the league. I just want to point out that a SP can be successful with two nasty pitches. In the end I do believe Phil needs to get that changeup working. It looks good so far =

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Phil Hughes could have been pitching his home games this spring at Hammond Stadium, preparing for his first season as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

Instead, the 21-year-old went out Sunday and showed the Twins and the rest of the American League what to expect from him.

Hughes - whose named was mentioned all winter as a possible trading chip as the Twins shopped Johan Santana - threw four no-hit innings against Minnesota, retiring the first nine Twins he faced before issuing a four-pitch walk to open the fourth. Hughes walked two in that inning, but he made it through without allowing a run, continuing his impressive spring.

"My fastball was good," Hughes said. "I threw some good breaking balls and a couple good changeups, but my slider was pretty bad. It's getting there."

Including his outing against the University of South Florida, Hughes has thrown six innings this spring without allowing a hit. In fact, he had retired all 15 batters he faced before walking outfielder Denard Span in the fourth.

Joe Girardi called the outing "really good," praising Hughes for using all his pitches, holding baserunners and "doing everything he has to do to be successful."

Said Girardi: "It seems like he's growing as a pitcher."

Hughes, whose last outing was shortened to just one inning and 10 pitches because of rain, threw an additional 30 pitches in the bullpen that day to bring his total to 40. Yesterday, he was at 35 pitches after three innings, then needed 21 to get through the fourth, bringing his total to 56. His next start, scheduled for Friday in Sarasota against the Reds, should see his pitch count increased to about 70.

"I want to get my pitch count up; that's the big thing," Hughes said when asked what he still needs to work on. "Arm strength and locating the fastball is No. 1, and from there, mixing in the changeup more this year."

Hughes struggled with some mechanical problems last year following his return from a hamstring injury, but an early start this season - he started throwing off a mound in January - and the help of new pitching coach Dave Eiland have allowed him to remain consistent to this point in the spring.

"I feel good," Hughes said. "I just hope I don't waste all the good innings in spring training. I think I have some more left in me."

If he can recapture that slider he had in his "early" days, that would be 4 pitches in the arsenal...I LIKE!!!

Lidge not only let up the Pujols homer but a Scott Posednik walk off homer in the World Series and the game winning series clinching hit in game 4 of the series

And lost his job in '06 and '07

THAT'S a bad post season!

sully- speaking of that, did that HR ball by Pujols ever come back down?
