Special feature on Hal Steinbrenner
Here's a Sunday story I'd been hoping to get for quite some time: an interview with Hal Steinbrenner. Here's the link: http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-sphal0323,0,6108855.story
Some of the major topics Hal talked about were the balance of power between himself and Hank (equal and they must agree on big decisions), whether the Steinbrenners will sell the Yankees in the next few years (no chance), off-season decisions (we wanted them all back, meaning Rodriguez, Rivera, Posada, Abreu, Pettitte), his personality, his philosophy and growing up a Steinbrenner. Enjoy.
Also in today's section are stories on Andy Pettitte being scratched from a start due to back spasms: http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-spyanks0323,0,4579772.story
and a notebook led by Graig Nettles having prostate cancer: http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-spynotes0323,0,2757456.story

come on, kat...please tell us what it is!! The suspense is killing me!
Looking forward to it! Keep up the good work.
Can't wait for the story Kat. Nothing on the website yet . . .
Wow a new special article!
I can't wait!
I think it will be a great feature. Newsday still has one of the best Sports Sections in the country. Jon Heyman and Tom Verducci were amazing writers who moved on ... Jon told me when he left Newsday they wouldn't let him publish a short column to his readers ... very odd. I used to deliver Newsday in the snow as a kid ... now it's ultra left wing and even Marxist, anti Christian, sleazy ads, baby termination ads ... but still a pretty good sports section, aside from Ken Davidoff's "I can't comment on Sheff because I'm white, not gay and a 'man'" column and Jim Baumbach's ode to Brian "The police say the half passed out girl's on the way to the ER" McNamee ...
I have given up on waiting for the story on Sidney, a 90 year-old man at the Lindenhurst Village Museum who was at Shore Road when Babe Ruth hit a HR but stopped at 3B, not wanting to show up the team.
Sidney told me after that, they all went to Barnacle Bills to get drunk. This was during Prohibition.
I keep asking Nudge to go there and talk to Sidney. And Kat too. How much more time does Sidney have left?
As an aside, does anyone know that Omar Minaya does excellent work in Palestine, working with youth? I think that's pretty amazing! (Besides their burning down Joseph's tomb, teaching Pre K kids to do suicide bombings and other fun activities! Woo Hoo!).
All of these baseball people turn up in the strangest places.
In a related matter, did you see Obama's church ran the Hamas terrorist, kill Jews, anti-Israel Manifesto on their OWN CHURCH website? It's the top story on WND.com.
Where do these sick people come from? And is this "man" who ran the manifesto, Mr. Wright, fit to be the spiritual advisor of our next President? It's just so sick beyond words ... Many of us who support Israel also have sympathy for the Palestinians, the Christians living there especially ... but this manifesto is just outright disgusting.
I doubt Israelis will look kindly on this kind of evil. New York City has more Jewish people than all of Israel combined. They must feel deeply hurt, confused, sad and angry. The daily outrages New Yorkers must face sometimes defy human comprehension.
What happened to our country?
I'd like to see Obama explain this away beyond "Oh, I went to church there for 20 years, "Rev" Wright married me and Michelle and then bapitzed my chlidren, but I had no idea."
Sure bro! We all believe that. If we want lies we'll stick with Hillary and Bill!
Regardless, in the end, as they always do, the MOSSAD will sort this out to their liking. Of that I have no doubt.
Anyway, I will look forward to Kat's article ...
I'm assuming the Hal Steinbrenner story is the big feature you're talking about. Nice job.
I'm sure he was a really tough interview to get because he doesn't talk to the media very often.
Good for you.
"It's sad actually - he wants everyone to bow to his intellect yet refuses to accept the fact that for an entire year he wanted Alex Rodriguez traded for Ervin Santana and then vanished as Alex went on to have an MVP season. It is guys like him, Roy, and Nudge who are the reason I don't come around here as much. They suck the joy out of baseball."
Chip, I missed having your always interesting insights. Don't go away, just do as I do with the 'crazies' and agitators who show up here - just 'scroll on by!'
Does anyone read all the articles in a newspaper or magazine? I don't. I read what interests me. I don't read the Lupicas of the world for example, because you know in advance where they're'coming form.' Same goes for the guys you mentioned. Just scroll on by as Diane and I do.
Yanks 61, Chip, Viper
First, you all need to get your facts straight. I wanted Lilly signed over your boy Igawa and that is one that even Stevie Wonder can see. And, I don't know if you guys are aware of it, but the stiff Lilly has won 15 back to back years, one being in the AL EAST with Toronto. No, not Cy material, but certainly better than many others.
And, I was correct again on my prediction all last winter on your buddy, the opening day starter for 2007. Also, I could care less about Gagne one way or another. That was Roy's. But, I did want AR traded and still would for the right guys. He is Dave Winfield all over again just like I said. Awesome stats over 162 but can't Git-R-Done! And the big reason I don't care for him is that he is a drama queen distraction to the team. Also, I wanted to trade Melky and Hughes for J. Santana and still would. You will see why soon enough.
I also don't expect anyone to BOW to my intellect. That has nothing to do with baseball or blogging with fellow fans. What I would expect from everyone though is to have my views respected even when they don't go along with standard group mentality on here. I think my accuracy % is pretty darn good when it comes to making predictions and analysis of players. So please, feel free to continue passing over my idiotic posts and just revel in harmony with your own little like minded groupies.
Being open minded and respectful of others ideas, I will continue to read your posts. That is, if you don't mind?
My boy Igawa?
Hmmm, talk about someone who doesn't gets his facts straight.
Here's again what I said about the Igawa bid on 11/29/06:
-----------------------------------------
"I really don't get this move at all by Cashman and I'm wondering if he's been taking his medication.
$26M for his rights plus the cost of his actual deal is an awful lot of cabbage to fork over for a guy that doesn't appear to be an upgrade over anyone else on the current market.
They seemed to want to rid themselves of the Jaret Wright option because he sucks and they would save a few million on top of it. For reasons I supported, Cashman scoffed at the idea of paying the ludicrous salaries and commitment to guys like Lilly, Meche, and Zito, but then turn around and make a ridiculous bid on a guy that has not exactly set the world on fire in Japanese baseball?
Doesn’t make sense. I simply don't understand it and I'm hoping a deal doesn't get worked out for one reason or another."
-----------------------------------------
Nobody but Rick Keyes or perhaps Ant could mistake these words to being remotely supportive of the Igawa deal. And signing Lilly to a 4/$40M deal would have been a stupid move too. The guy has been an average pitcher his entire career.
You did want Gagne. I can find actual quotes from you if I felt like going through the archives. And you wanted Teixiera too, but they weren’t going to get him without trading Joba. Nonetheless, you wanted him anyways.
You are so misguided when it comes to A-Rod that it’s hard to believe. You give a known steroid user and disastrous contract like Giambi the benefit of the doubt but not the greatest player of our generation like A-Rod. I really don’t understand that logic.
Simply put, A-Rod can’t pitch. And if you’ve any paid attention at all, you would know that their Achilles heel in the postseason since 2004 has not been A-Rod - but their atrocious starting pitching. I think 3 quality starts in 13 games with a 6.31 ERA and averaging 4.2 IP per start says it all.
So Anthony, I guess you had a good twin who got to deliver it on nice days?
Food Fight!!!!!!
Hahahahahahhaha!
Say Hey,
That was funny...and well timed.
Chip,
You've been a great guy on this blog but I think you detract from yourself when you take your disagreements w/ Rick to a personal level. Look, we all make bad calls on trades we want to make or players we want the Yanks to sign but that's what is great about this blog. It's the trading of baseball opinion and I think you should at least give Rick some credit for actually thinking and not posting regurgitated items from SI.com or Pro Sports Daily.
I appreciate all the original thinkers on this blog, I loved it when you came up with those wild 5 way team trades, it showed you were thinking way outside the box. Rick is a great Yankee fan, probably twice your age so yeah, he missed the "good old days" and so will you some day.
I bet if you guys met you'd like each other. I know Rick is a great guy and I'm pretty certain you are too. Hell, we're Yankee fans, we can't be all that bad right?
Let's keep the personal insults out of it if at all possible, it's better for the blog.
If we were all sitting around a bar we'd be arguing about this stuff, then we'd clank our beer mugs together and just enjoy being Yankee fans.
