« Indians 7, Yankees 5 | Main | Pettitte throws bullpen »

Cano looking excellent

I stayed back from the game today in order to talk to Andy Pettitte after he played catch, to talk to Alex Rodriguez and to see Joba Chamberlain pitch in a minor league game. Speaking of Rodriguez, the Jose Canseco allegations were first reported on a blog, but colleague Ken Davidoff got a copy of the Canseco book, so Newsday is writing the allegations after having seen the book. It's not just from someone's blog/humor website. Sorry for any confusion. I'll have a different Alex Rodriguez story tomorrow that's not based on Canseco stuff, so you can check that out if you like.

In the game against the Indians, the Yankees lost 7-5 after Darrell Rasner gave up three unearned runs for a blown save/loss. Ian Kennedy gave up four unearned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The offensive star of the spring for the Yankees, and I'm not sure this is even debatable, is Robinson Cano. He went 3-for-4 yesterday with two more doubles (five this spring) and two RBIs. He's hitting .464, and has a major-league-best 19 RBIs.

It's only spring training but why did they take Ian out like it was a real game? Shouldn't they have let him stay in to work out his problems? Strange approach when winning is not important but practice and development is.

Strange approach? Kennedy threw 90 pitches.

How many is he supposed to throw in a ST game? 100? 110?

I've never heard of anyone throwing 100+ pitches in a ST game, so I don't know exactly what you want from the kid.

Well said, Viper.

Viper,

He is mocking some anonymous Yankee fan that was trying to slight Sully when Colon pitched by asking that same question about Boston. You know in that snide way acting like Yankees dont care about ST but Boston does. That "we are superior to you" attitude. So every time the Yanks take one of their pitchers out mid inning that same question gets thrown back at you all. One of those stupid things that fans say that come back to haunt them over and over.

Thats what its all about anyway.

Viper....Cartman is right, that "Yankee ST Philosophy" was just being a wise@ss.

For the record though...Jake Peavy threw 100 pitches in his last ST start, so it is done on occasion. Im with Jim Kaat and Coney on the subject, pitch counts are not always a great measurement for a SP. Cone said on a number of occasions that he actually got stronger when he went over 100 and threw some of his best stuff between 100-120 pitches. He also went on to say that a guy can throw 80 taxing pitches and be out of gas, while another soft tosser ( Ian ) can throw into the 100's and still have something left.

However, in a ST game, I think 90 or so is more than enough for a 23 year old kid. His 4 BB and 5H in 4 2/3 tell me he might have been laboring a little today.

Im glad to see Patterson came in with men on and got the K to end the inning. I really like how this kid is throwing and hope he makes it into the pen...hmmm..I thought he was a LHP, just saw he is a RHP...sorry about that.

Cartman??? the mystery man who appears out of nowhere???

You're WRONG. The question was a serious one asked of Sully. Why are they taking Colon out so soon? It was only spring training. If you remember the game was against RS v. the Yankees so there was a discussion between Sully and some Yankees fans about the game in general. The debate came later on between a Yankee fan who was not anonymous and Know Nothing Nudge who insisted spring TRAINING games are to be played like it's the World Series while the Yankees themselves insist Spring TRAINING games are for TRAINING, experimenting, development. From that time on, this moron makes the same asinine brainless comment about Yankees pitchers being taken out of ST games after four innings or 100 pitches. It's either child's play or utter stupidity on his part. I'd guess it's probably Nudge in disguise who can't stand to be made a fool of. No one else here would apparently take such a discussion so personally.

next time someone wants to lament the state of the Yankee pitching staff, or the staff of Boston, or even the Mets - consider this - the Cards just placed Mark Mulder, Chris Carpenter, Joel Pinero, and Matt Clement on the DL - that's 4 of their 5 starters. They will go into the season with a rotation of Adam Wainwright (the only non-hurt starter) Kyle Loshe (who was just signed two weeks ago), Braden Looper and Anthony Reyes.

Ya know, Chip. If the Cards still had David Eckstein, they wouldn't need any starting pitching to make it back to the WS.

I don't recall the last time Clement played a full season and Mulder going down is hardly a shocker.

The Cubs should easily slug their way to a division title, but it remains to be seen if they can beat some of the better teams in the NL (Colorado, Arizona, and Mets).

kat, you love robinson (in a totally professional way i mean) does that mean he is as good a person as he seems?

I can't tell if Cartman was trying to insult me or not
Oh well

Off to spring training tomorrow! I didn't get tickets to the game in Clearwater against the Phillies, but I'm going down to the park. Next year, I definitely want to go to a game there. They have a Tiki bar in left field. I'll be at the Yanks/Pirates game on the 27th and the minor league games on the 28th and 29th. Hopefully I'll be able to post some nice pictures for everyone like Jim.

Anon,

Funny cause I read that exchange and it wasn't that way at all. You just did your normal Nudge attack without really making a point and he blew you off and you just kept coming and haven't either stopped or even made a coherent point. Still your going on about it 10 days later and boring us all to tears. For the sake of us all stop with the Nudge obsession. I think you need some help.

Sully,

Im with YOU bro! Anon gets a little worked up when his stupid words smack him in the snout though. Listen for his vitriolic response. Its coming in short. Like a little Marionette while I work the strings. He is at war with me, you Nudge and anyone else with a brain. Poor little boy. See he tried to mcok you and your team with a arrogant condescending question like why did the Sox try to win when us superior Yankees know its better to lose inST. Thats why we haven't won a WS while you guys have won 2. Because the Yankees are....what was his term...oh yeah, an INTELLIGENT organization because they dont try to win.

See how stupid his reasoning is. His defense is to insult and name call because....well.....thats all he's got! Thats why he's an ANONYMOUS.

I know your out there anon, foaming at the mouth and pounding that keyboard so hard your going to bust the keys. Burst that vein in your neck for us now so we don't have to listen to your nasty ignorance anymore. What have ya got? Who are you hiding behind? We know who your hiding from. Imagine me and Nudge laughing at all your posts while everyone else laughs with us. Come on gives us some more stupidity. Thats what you do. Feed the monster.....feed the monster.

This place is getting creepy. Im out of here for the night.

Just a few random things ...

The Billy Crystal photo should go.

Irony = Tibet + MLB + Richard Gere in Yankees Clubhouse

I see someone mentioned Eckstein. He is great !!!!! Someone said he took steroids on this Blog Any proof?

Next, as a student at Arizona State, somone driving a sports car with "MR 40/40" on the side (he painted it on!) ... came right through campus on University Drive at 100 MPH and the police stopped this person. (Who could have killed a student!) He had an uzi in the car.

That person's name was Jose Canseco.

These people like Canseco and Leyritz have a lot of nerve!

Finally, does anyone know the name of the DATE RAP__ girl McNamee had to see rushed to the ER after the open sex in the pool ... with the police on hand ... and the other Yankees trainer?

I would like to talk with her and her parents. Her story should be published. I was very disappointed in Jim Baumbach's ode to McNamee. Newsday should be ashamed. It was an outrage. I talked with the police in Tampa/St. Pete about this ... but have not found her name yet. Poor girl! Why hasn't her family had him killed? Maybe they are forgiving Christians? I don't know.

I really want to write a book about the Yankees. There is just so much that needs to be said ... good and bad I suppose. Lately, other than Va. Tech, it's been all bad, and even evil at times.

For random thoughts, they sure seem to repeat themselves a helluva lot.

HYD
Brighthouse Field in Clearwater is a great place to see a game. As you mentioned Tiki bar, you can walk full circle around field and sit on the out field grass.

I was thinking (again) about the irony of the whole Richard Gere + Tibet + Yanks + MLB ... and I came across an article on Antwar.com by Justin Raimondo.

Listen to this ...

"I know we are supposed to believe that the vast majority of the Chinese people are groaning under the weight of Commie oppression and sympathize (albeit silently) with the downtrodden Tibetans, but that is hardly the case. Indeed, the exact opposite is closer to the truth. Every time the West gets up on its high horse and lectures the Chinese government about its lack of 'morality,' the tide of anti-Western Chinese nationalism rises higher.

"We saw this when the U.S. 'accidentally' bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade during Clinton's Balkan War of Aggression, and again when that American spy plane went down over Hainan island. In Beijing today, they are worried about the upcoming Olympic celebration, which will provide a platform for a wide variety of groups – including ultra-nationalist Chinese students, whose street antics have augured internal regime change in the past, and could do so again.

"They are worried about a larger number of things and they are worried about keeping the lid on," according to Arnold Howitt, a management specialist who oversees crisis-management training programs for Chinese government officials at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.

... So, you get to the Ivy League, and there you find professors HELPING the mass murders in that country deal with "Crisis Management." Millions in slave labor camps, Laogai, organ harvesting ... it's just sick. I'd like to see the syllabus ...

Tiananmen Square 101: "Roll out the tanks. And then roll the tanks over the innocent, unarmed people ..."

This is Harvard?

This is America?

I am just at a loss.

At a total loss!

That was Harvard
This is America
And THIS is a baseball blog

Redsox are getting murdered by my boy Richy Harden!!

Redsox are getting murdered by my boy Richy Harden!!

Ant Colony
......and your point is ?????

I see the crazies were out in full force last night. Was there a full moon?

NUDGEY PUT YOUR PANTS ON

The Red Sox lost...
Oh well, it's only spring training.

Oh wait.... damn.

There's something just wrong about losing to Keith Foulke and Alan Embree.... key members of the 2004 team.

WARNING: Off-topic for everybody except

Anthony,

HORMIGAS, not Ormegas. If you invest in a Spanish-English dictionary, you can locate even Spanish words that you can't spell just by looking up the word in the language you do know.

You might even go on to discover HORMIGUERO, the Spanish word for a colony of ants.

Sloppy, Anthony.

Do your homework.

Start with getting the simple things right.

It could become a habit.

Wellllll,

The good news for this team is that the way they are pitching it looks like those laughable innings restrictions won't be much of a problem. It seems like the opposing hitters are imposing much stricter innings restrictions. I mean if your guys can't get past 5 innings that about does the trick for you. No one should be pitching more than say 100-120 innings!

Big surprise yeasterday huh. Another juicer discovered on the Yanks. Maybe you guys should just switch stadiums and play over at Tropicana Field. It would be more appropriate. "Come see the team of Juicers at Tropicana Field" The forst 10000 arriving recieve their choice of a vial of HGH or Winstrol!

I guess those roids are really boosting A-Rods sex drive huh? Seems like he just can't enough women. Doesn't care who's they are or what their reputation is. Tell Derek to watch out. He may he after his girl too! Not to mention Roger BigHead. He better check his wifes phone logs. Is there anyone who has recently played for the Yanks that didn't juice? God the list is growing and growing.

That Canseco is such a nice fellow! God Bless him.

Betcha Pettitte has been on the phone with you know who. I mean its OK and all. He just wants to get heathly and back on the mound....you know....because he feels guilty like he is letting the team down. You know the same way Gaylord Perry felt when he didn't throw the grease ball and was roughed up. Thats why it was OK....he did it for his team.

So....What happened to Tubby the Tuba? How come he isn't anchoring this joke of a starting staff you have. You all went on the record extolling his undeniable star qualities. He was the Number one guy you'd all been pining for (forget that you passed over a proven number one because you couldn't risk giving up your number 4). Tubby is banished to the bullpen after that impressive spring he had huh? Guess those two other "plus" pitches he was breaking out this year weren't so plus after all. What a joke!

So, tell me again, where am I wrong?

Actually:

HORMIGUERO is an anthill!

Wow...this blog is getting better all the time. I just come here to read/post about baseball and I get the added bonus of taking spanish lessons.
Muchas Gracias! or is it Muchos? Help!

Depends if your Mexicano of Castillion.

Depends if your Mexicano or Castillion.

Jim A.,

That's what you get for reading posts marked 'off-topic' ... LOL

Oh, and since you ask, it's 'muchas' ...

and

'de nada' or 'por nada' to you (depending on your preferred dialect).

And Jim,

Amigo is speaking of HORMIGUERO when he makes the distinction between Castilian and Standard South American Spanish.

Not 'muchos' vs. 'muchas'. There's only one kind of 'gracias', no matter where you go.

Will this be on the final?

Of course we could be wasting time on the latest Mets contribution instead...

Ho hum.

Will March never end?

I took two years of Spanish in high school and another two years in college.

I can say with confidence that I don't remember two dozen words of Spanish.

Thanks for the clarification Diane :)

Hello, fellow Yankee fans. Will someone please tell Joe G. he has to keep Patterson. This guy is the real deal. Do we really need a long reliever - Rasner, Karstens, or Igawa? These guys have "Hit Me" signs taped on their shirts. I say, keep Patterson, Traber, and Bruney (for now).

Jim A, Lady D, Chip, Viper, Dru, HYD - Hello people!

Love when Bosox get spanked in Japanese!

I am the ant eater I was hired by terminex to control blogging pests here and abroad.

I see we have a live one on here.

first off puny Ant -

Proceeds from games or MLD developement does in alot of cases help several stricken areas of China. Tibet is tibet and so what they want to leave jump on a ship corridor . China is or have reached out to african nations and is aiding them in repair of their ecomony systems.

As for your rants Ant i'm watching you

M from J,
Hello right back to ya!
I agree with your bullpen choices except I'm not sold on Bruney. He still walks too many people. I think I'd rather see Veras to start off with, but I suspect a trade is coming to relieve Joe G. of some of these choices.
