Here's the news from today's paper:

And here are some notes, topped by one on Kei Igawa: http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-spken265592101feb26,0,6816964.column

Those of you interested in the health of George Steinbrenner may want to hear how he's doing. He's been more visible this spring than he was last spring, and appears to be doing quite well. His memory seems sharp. He has chatted with writers and players, etc. Not sure how much he'll be around New York this season, but he is at Legends Field regularly.

Kat,
That is a nice update on Mr. Steinbrenner. If you read some accounts you would think the man is eating baby food, messing his pants and mumbling incoherently. I'm glad he's still around and I hope the Yankees can deliver another championship for him.

I bet that nudge messes his pants

Has anyone heard anything on the Yankees playing the Hokies in an exhibition game? Last year, after the tragedy at Virginia Tech, I thought I read that the Yanks would play the Hokies in an exhibition sometime this year. But I can't seem to find anything new on that.

When any of yous guys are down in Va Beach, let me know! Also, I have some tix to some games at Yankee Stadium this year I know I will not use, and I'd be happy to give them to some real fans. The one game I know I will use is the Aug 27th game against the Red Sox. My son is a huge Red Sox fan so he'll be happy to go to that, but I believe I have 7 other games. I'll post when I know more.

boss...sign me up buddy!!!!

; )

Boss: I believe the Yanks are playing the Hokies on March 18th or 19th, somewhere in that week. It is their next game after they play against the Red Sox in Tampa on (I believe) March 17th.

Boss- the game is on the 18th of March, I just verified.

I'm w/ Dru, let me know when you have extra Yanks tix.....I'm always in the market. I'll certainly look you up next time I'm in VA Beach, probably the last week of June is the next time I'll spend any extended amount of time there. My house is in Ocean Lakes, are you anywhere near there?

Boss...Ill be in the area Sat 8/23. On our way to OBX we stay over in Chesapeake, right off of 64 by the Greenbrier Mall. We go out for dinner and drinks that night, then finish the trip off to OBX the next morning. The Yanks play Balt that night @ 7PM, maybe you can join us for a couple drinks and watch the game? Not sure where we can catch the Yankee game though...any suggestions??

Living here in VA, I was excited about going to the game in Blacksburg; however, to get tickets you basically have to be VA Tech staff or a student (via a lottery). They are also reserving tickets for families of those who were affected by the horrible shooting. Hopefully, it will be on one of the local channels here.

Kudos to the Yanks for this gracious oppurtunity they are offering VA Tech to continue with the healing process.

One thing the Yankees are desparately short on in our super strength minors is young left-handed pitching. Among over 40 pitchers under 25 in the Yankees minors, only 4 are left-handed: Brandon Thomson, Michael Dunn, Wilkins A De La Rosa and Tim Dennehy!

None of these has made it to Trenton, much less Scranton. Are left-handed pitchers really so rare?

Details are here:

MMC Gutt- Isn't it sad that at least three teams are closer to VA Tech than the Yanks and it's the Yanks, yes the "Evil Empire" Yankees, who are stepping up to help out? You can always look on Ebay or Craigslist for tickets, they will be there.

All-
I just heard that Scott Kazmir is having elbow problems and is going in for an MRI. I know we speculated on this blog about the beating Kazmir's elbow takes because of his delivery so this could be bad, or it could be the early stages of something bad.

Nudge should be inducted into the hall of fame of losers.

Yes, DRU - I get the baseball package for a reason. Not to sound gay, but a little cookout, some buds, and the Yankees sounds great to me. Otherwise, Kelly's right there in the shopping center across the street from Greenbrier Mall has the baseball package, and right there off of Volvo and Greenbrier they just opened a bunch of shops and restaurants that have satellite. Plus it's the Orioles and they are considered the local team, so they will be on everywhere, either MASN or whatever 11 in Hampton Roads is. I also really like Baker Street, corner of Centerville and Kempsville, because they have that NTN trivia game.

Jim A,

Ocean Lakes sounds very familiar, but I can't pinpoint where it is for sure. I'm actually in Lake Christopher - basically where Indian River road and Kempsville Road meet. Is OL down by Dam Neck? My wife works off of Nimmo Pkwy near General Booth.

John G - you still around????

Thanks for the info Boss!! We’ll check out those places.

Jon K, I was just reading something about the Yanks wanting some LHP a couple years ago. That guy ended up getting drafted two picks earlier...we had to settle for Joba…THANK GOD!!!!

I think the Yanks did the right thing. They just drafted the best possible player at each pick instead of saying, hey lets grab a lefty. I think now that the system is built up, its gives us the opportunity to get a stud lefty early in the draft. I think we get a sandwich pick for Viz leaving..maybe we get a LH Joba??? The yanks did what they needed to do to build up the system, lefty or not. Look for them to fill the holes these next couple years.

sorry last post was me

Kat, Jim A and everyone else,

Thanks for the Hokies info. I will certainly check out Craigs list or E-Bay, or maybe my friend's son who is a student could try to hook me up. Either way, I'm with you MMC Gutt and Jim A - quite impressive that the "Evil Empire" is stepping up to do this, and they additionally donated a million dollars shortly after the tragedy. I think even Say Hey would agree that was a very classy move.

Jim,

Although you do make a legitimate point about other teams in closer proximity to VA Tech - who really wants to see the Orioles or Nationals play anyway?

Love 'em or hate 'em - no team in MLB has the buzz and star power that they do.

The only reason to get tickets for an Orioles game is to catch a game at Camden Yards. The same can be said for the Nationals when the new stadium opens.

Boss- Nimmo and Gen. Booth are right near my house, about a half mile from me. I'm off Culver Lane and the subdivision is called Ocean Lakes. Since I don't live down there full time I don't know the areas outside the beach too well, but I've been getting to know them as each year passes by and I spend more time down there. I've spent the first few years of owning my home down there saying "why did I buy this motherf**king sh*t box?" because it seemed like all I did was go there to relax and end up doing major work to the house but now that I've done all I can do to the place, it's a fun place to relax and only 4 miles from the oceanfront w/ a little water in the backyard so I can fish w/ my kids. I love that area.

Dru: A little trivia for you. The Yankees got two draft picks as compensation for Tom Gordon when he signed w/ the Phils- who were they? Oh hell, I'll give you one: JOBA!!

Viper,
I couldn't agree more, but the Yankees didn't have to do this, and teams like Boston and the Dodgers could have and they didn't. It's a classy act any way you look at it.

Jim,

Can't disagree with that.

I know certain posters often ridicule the Yanks on the grounds of morality, but there is no team more charitable to the less fortunate.

Hell, the Steinbrenners donate huge money to Jimmy Fund every year as well and that's a Boston charity.

Jim A..great trivia. You know that the YES network will flash that question during one of these games.

Well I know it cant be IPK, they picked him in the 1st round that year. Im not sure??? McAllister????

Dru,
It was IPK and Joba....not bad for an aging Tom Gordon, eh?
