The meetings are winding down. We had our last briefing with Brian Cashman, who's flying back to NY this afternoon, a little while ago. Cashman said last night he thought they might lose two players in the Rule V draft this morning. That's a good thing, he said, not that they would lose two players, but that they were deep enough, talent-wise, to not be able to protect all the players they like on their 40-man roster.
However, the Yankees only lost one player in the end. The Padres took righthanded reliever Michael Gardner, 26, who was 3-5 with a 2.88 ERA in 44 games and 81 1/3 innings pitched for Double-A Trenton.
In the Triple-A portion of the draft, the Yankees took Bo Hall, a 27-year-old righthanded reliever. Hall (whose real first name is Jeremy) was 5-2 with a 3.46 ERA in 54 2/3 innings pitched. He walked 36 and struck out 56.

From ESPN.COM:
The Rule 5 draft
First off, note that it's not the "Rule V Draft," but the Rule 5 draft. It's called the Rule 5 draft because the section of the Official Rules that covers the draft just happens to be Rule 5 in the book.
--------------------------
Something else I found interesting... Chad Jennings who does the SWB Yankees Blog says that, in the minor leage portion of the Rule 5 Draft, the drafting team is not required to keep the draftee in the higher minor league level.
Uhm, it's called Roman numerals Ralphy.
Ralph,
Way to make yourself look silly. Just to help you out, here's "Rule IV" of the "Guide to Life" (this is also called Rule 4):
"No what the f*ck you are talking about before you try to make someone look stupid"
HAHAHAHAHA
Imbecile....must be a Bosox fan.
Brush yer tooth, Gerty!
LOL...Hey ralphy, have you ever tried to LXIX your woman before? If not you can go down to the docks and pay a "professional" C dollars and she can show you how it works.
It's Rule 5 because that is its name, not Rule V. How many of you will be calling Super Bowl XLII, Super Bowl 42? You won't because from the beginning it was numbered using roman numerals. Similarly, the Baseball Agreement did not use Roman Numerals when numbering rules. Maybe you all will be happy if the Yankees start putting out their roster with Roman Numerals.
It's better that Kat hears it from me than from her media cohorts.

I know it was from ESPN, but it was really funny to read it. I dont think it really matters Rule V or Rule 5, its splitting hairs.
Rule -I-I-I-I-
OK "Drue" u win. Speling dusent matter. Cawling thins bi they're write naim dusent matter. As Jim sez, I shood "no" better.
JK. It does matter and I'll continue to be bothered by newscasters who say "gonna", postings that are barely English and calling things by the wrong name and then defending it.
Drew, your postings were funny and got me good.
Funny. Gonna and Gotta should be inducted into the proper use of the language Hall of Fame. Going to or I have to is just too formal. The Rule 5 discussion is a little silly don't you think? Oh man, LaTroy Hawkins? Shouldn't the Hawkins name be banned for all time from the pinstripes after Andy? God I wish I could throw 95 or throw left handed. What I wouldn't give for a one year deal at $3M plus. I could post an AL East average 5.54 ERA out of the pen 1/3 of an inning at a time I swear. They'd have trouble with my 59 MPH heater I guarantee it ;-). Can you say set for life? Of course at 47 I'd probably be hurt after two drills in Spring Training. Speaking of which do many of you go every year? I've been every year since 1997. It would be great fun to hook up at a game so we can insult each other face to face don't you think? Just a wicked thought....
John - been every year since my 10th B-day (August). Im 30 now so this will be 21 in a row for me. I usually go a dozen times a year, let me know when you go. We always tailgate before the game (grill and have some beers) in the parking deck next to the stadium.
Drew,
I think John was referring to spring training, is that what you are talking about as well? I've always wanted to take two weeks off work and roam around Florida, catching as many games as I could.
Jim, I just reread John's post, my bad. I did think he was talking about the stadium. Never been to spring training before.
