Meeting with Cashman
The beat writers met with Brian Cashman a little bit ago in his suite. Since he hasn't returned calls in so long, everybody jokingly introduced themselves. I wish I could say he gave lots of insight into the talks on Johan Santana, but that wasn't the case. He never even said Santana's name, simply saying he couldn't comment on the "topic of the day" or the player everyone wants to talk about.
Cashman also wouldn't acknowledge that Andy Pettitte is coming back, even though Pettitte's own agent has done so. He won't even acknowledge the pending deals with Alex Rodriguez and Mariano Rivera, since they're not official. At one point, a reporter even asked, "Have you ever heard of Mo and Alex?" Cashman laughed at that, but didn't say yes.
What Cashman did talk about is the official signing of backup catcher Jose Molina, the designation for assignment of Andy Phillips, the fact that they want to upgrade their pitching staff and their spring schedule, which was released today. Oh, and he insists that people keep calling him trying to trade for Kyle Farnsworth but that he doesn't expect to move Farnsworth because he thinks the Yankees need him. Cashman even acknowledged that he doesn't think people believe him on that.

What is he trying to be Cashmangenius all of a sudden? It must be tough having to tip-toe around Bullish Hank (Baby Boss).

Free-agent outfielder Steve Finley is attending the meetings, networking with clubs with the goal of continuing his career. Finley, who turns 43 in March, batted .181 in 43 games with the Rockies last season and was released on June 13.

I bet Cashman will be all over that!

... the Twins are considering filing tampering charges against the Yankees because of Hank Steinbrenner's public comments about Santana, according to a major-league source. Minnesota is also discussing trades involving closer Joe Nathan, with the Astros being one possible suitor.

It has been widely reported that Japanese free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda would prefer to join a West Coast team, but a source close to Kuroda says the pitcher remains "open-minded" about where he wants to play. If that indeed is Kuroda's sentiment, it could be good news for the Royals, who are making a huge run at the pitcher. One interested team says that the price for Kuroda will exceed what Ted Lilly received from the Cubs last off-season — a four-year, $40 million free agent contract.

Someone call Stephen Hawking
Lilly is to 15 wins at 10 million as Igawa is to 1 win at 46 million posting fee plus how he "earned" his salary is to ... Jim A. and Diane deciding what is crazy!
Definition of crazy in Webster's Dictionary:
"Anyone who calls to acquire Kyle Farnsworth in a trade."
"Anyone who says 'no' to trading Farnsworth to anyone who calls about a trade."
Note ... this is a photo of Kyle right next to it!
... I guess Brian could not talk with the media cause Minny will file tampering charges.
The high school drama queens are out!!!!!!
Certainly are.
Wouldn't have mentioned it, but
you said it yourself.
It was widely reported by numerous sources that Hank was going to attend these Winter Meetings. He thus far has not shown up in Nashville, and for good reason. He has absolutely "butchered" the Santana negotiations, and angered the Twins to the point that Cashman has been forced to conduct "damage control" manuvers, and try to salvage the Santana negotiations. Hank should be at Nashville to watch, listen, and learn how to conduct both negotiations, and his tongue.
I said this morning that they will not be landing Santana now that Pettitte has returned.
I have little doubt that Cashman and Co. will be perfectly content going to war next April with Wang, Pettitte, Moose, Joba, and Hughes with Kennedy getting plenty of starts and Horne getting his shot at some point during the season.
They will probably kick the tires on Haren and Bedard, but they will not be pursued aggressively.
I said it last week but don't be shocked if Santana starts Opening Day for the Twins.
Pettitte's return has effectively changed everything.
This is insanity.
If he goes to the Sox this damn "Chatty Cathy Doll" should be prosecuted.
I'm with Roy on this.
Hank may really have blew this for us.
I'd love embrace his apparent enthusiastic need to be involved..ie thus calming my fears that the Steinbrenners may just sell when the boss is gone but I must say this is an awful beginning to his tenure.
A-Rod had to beg and then he gives him 315!!
Look I was all for that and if this is some strategic plan that we're all unaware of that gets us what we want I'll admit I
was wrong and never question "Fredo" again but as of this moment I'm furious.
If he goes anywhere but the Twins I'm going to be VERY irritated with Hank and his mouth.
If I wanted an idiot to run the Yankees I'd be a Knicks FAN!!!
