« Statements from Don Mattingly, Brian Cashman | Main | Girardi to talk at 4:30 »

Mattingly to be on conference call

There's still no word when the Yankees might formally announce the hiring of Joe Girardi as manager. They have yet to schedule a conference call. But runner-up Don Mattingly is having a conference call at 4 p.m., so I'll be sure to pass on his thoughts on the situation.
Girardi's contract runs for three years at $2.2-2.5 million per year.
According to the Associated Press, Mariano Rivera and his agent Fern Cuza met with the Yankees at Legends Field in Tampa today. On his way in, just before noon, Rivera said, "We've got to see something today." He left Legends about an hour ago, again according to the AP, and is scheduled to be in New York tonight to receive an honor from the Boys and Girls Club.

ahhhh, a fresh area to post w/ no idiot Sox fans ... yet!

I hear you

Girardi has a conf. call at 4:30 PM.

Hey guys. I have a new Yankee's blog I have been working on and I think that it is pretty decent. Please visit it at HTTP://BRONXSTOP.BLOGSPOT.COM

Please feel free to comment on posts and email me with comments. It is really new so there are no Red Sux fan's there yet! Check it out please!

Just heard a rumor that the WARRIOR may come back to join Girardi's staff. He would definitely reverse all this bad news.

True Yank,

As much as that would be nice, I think it would cause major problems. Think about all the rumblings in the press if the Yanks start out awful next year and Mattingly is sitting there ready to replace Girardi.

Um- I think the warrior is Paul O'Neill, not Mattingly

My bad. That makes sense. The day Torre decieded not to take the Yanks offer, Kay had O'Neill his show and asked if it was a possiblity he'd join a staff managed by Girardi. O'Neill kinda danced around the question.

If O'Neill is coming back , I want to hear Suzy Waldman's reaction over the airwaves

I would love to see Paul back- but I'm not sure what his role would be. I don't see him as a bench coach type. I think the bench coach will probably be Tony Pena, with Don Baylor as a sleeper pick.

O'Neill could coach first if Pena moves to bench coach. Another coaching possibility is Bobby Meacham who has Yankee ties and coached for Girardi in Florida.

I can't see O'Neill coaching but what the hell, I love the guy so it would be good to have him back.

Alvaro,
Where have you been! Come back dude!

Cs07: Bobby Meacham would be great as long as the fans don't see him in the infield and renew his exit out of town.

O'Niel would be fabulous if its true and it comes to past. These Yanks are heading in the right direction with the mental side of the game. No BS get it done and get it done the right way with the team as the focus. No waithing around for the 6 run homer.

Jim,

I'm with you - I think Paulie likes the gig he has too much right now to get into coaching.

I could see David Justice having a role with the team though.

O'Niel would make a good hitting coach because he was a great situational hitter but since it looks like the Yankees are sticking with Long I'm not sure where on the staff he'd be best suited. But I agree with Jim A. he has a special place in my heart so why not. Maybe he could be an advisor?

We never thought Mattingly would ever come back to coach. He wanted to be with his family and watch his kids grow up. Then one day he must have missed the game and decided to come back. Maybe Paulie feels the same way. I really hope so, his fire is really needed.

Why not O'neill as the hitting coach. Especially if we do as Chip suggests and get Sexson - someone needs to teach him what not to swing at. Paulie was always reall patient at the plate.

Paulie is the man. I would love to see him on this coaching staff. He would definitely add a fire to the team that it hasn’t had in years.

OYF -

I think he would be a TERRIBLE coach - think about all the times he lost his temper as a player when he would get frustrated - now try to imagine him being patient as he tried to show someone else what to do and they didn't get it right away.

I think Chili Davis would be a pretty terrific hitting coach. Tim Raines for baserunning and at 3b and Nettles as the infield coach at 1st with Pena next to Girardi on the bench.

Dog,
You are absolutely right, not many are nearly as firey as Paulie. The Yanks haven't had much fire since he left, let's face it Torre and the team were getting complacent. Time to shake it up!!!

Actually, skip Nettles - go with Mariano Duncan who is right now the 1st base/infield coach with the Dodgers - Something tells me given his relationship with Joe Torre he will not be sticking around out there when Torre is hired.

Mattingly's conf. call: Classy.
He's congratulating Girardi and saying the Yanks made a great choice. He's thanking Cashman and the rest of the organization.

Donnie much classier in his remarks then Torre was in his.

You're right Chip, but I think his success with situational hitting is something the line-up could beniffit from which is why I'm thinking he could run a clinic in ST or is an advisor in some way. Would that over shadow Long? Looks like the Yankees are trying to keep him.

I like that the Yankees are giving Girardi a chance to opinion on the staff (at least it appears that way now) and maybe have one or two picks of coaches. It helps their relationship and Joe's overall success, he's has to have guys that he feels have his back.

Where are you guys hearing the conference calls?

I agree that he would be a good spring training instructor but not a full time hitting coach.

Yes the Yankees are trying to keep Kevin Long.

No, I don't think that he would feel undercut if Paulie was a spring training instructor, I mean the Yankees bring in scores of legends to serve as special instructors in Spring Training so it wouldn't be any sort of shot at Long.

OYF:

Mattingly is not upset with the organization, he understands and respects their choice, but is not deterred from his belief that he can manage in the major leagues.

GREAT LINE BY MATTINGLY:

On why he's not going to stay with the Yankees - it isn't anger or feeling hurt - it is "it wouldn't be fair to Girardi or Pena or anyone else who got that job because at some point the Yankees are going to lose 2 or 3 in a row and there will be talk about replacing the manager and I don't want everyone looking at me looming there as a replacement."

Mattingly just said exactly what I've said all along about his departure (I wish Bronx Bomber was listening to this),
Donnie said it would be unfair to Girardi if he were on the staff. He said they're bound to have a losing streak at some point and he doesn't want the media running to them to get their opinions about what the problem is.
He says he will always be a Yankee and will never think of himself as anything but a Yankee.

Also he doesn't close the door on coming back to the organization "I'm not going to go start rooting for the Red Sox...I consider myself a New Yorker"

Damn...why did they cut it off when the guy asked if he would boycott the Yankees?

I would like to congratulate Suzyn Waldman on asking a question and not crying...

Russo is making a good point (I'm as shocked as anyone) but Don is kind of hitching his wagon to Torre and the problem is that if he appears as just a Torre clone there might not be any jobs out there for him with organizations that he doesn't have ties to.

The point was also made that Torre might be his only option for a job right now so that is why he is hitching his wagon to him.

Well, if Torre does end up in LA it would be perfect for Mattingly - they have his son in their farm system. Maybe that is why he is hitching himself to Torre?

Jim

If I were in Don's shoes I would explore opportunities to maybe work on Lou's staff in Chicago.

Chip,
That makes sense too, because I just don't see Donnie caoching for any other AL team if it's not the Yanks.

Nice Idea Chip.

Cashman is on hold trying to talk to Girardi, that's hilarious!

Chip,
Check this out from SI.com:

The vacancy at third base for the Yankees could pave the path for trade discussions with the Marlins involving third baseman Miguel Cabrera who is gradually pricing himself out of Florida's moderate budget. If the Marlins trade Cabrera, the asking price will be steep. They would almost certainly demand top, young prospects in return for an All-Star hitter on a Hall of Fame career trajectory. One possible trade piece could be Melky Cabrera, the Yankees 23-year-old center fielder.

Wow....I can't say I was thrilled with Girardi's response to the "do you hope to have Andy, Mo and Jorge back?"

He basically said: "I'd love to, but things don't always work out".

Hmmmmm

But he did say that he would get on the horn with the players to ask them to play for the Yankees, maybe that includes Mo and Jorge? Hopefully? Let's not read too much into this...

I think Joe is trying not to say too much but appease the hunger for info.

I hope so OYF....I just hope he doesn't have inside info.

Jim A,

I got that same feeling as you did with that comment from Girardi.

Jim,

I would move Melky for Miggy. The Yankees do have a couple of young outfielders on the horizon - with Austin Jackson and Brett Gardner leading the pack - either one could be with the Yankees as soon as middle of next season - that said, I would not do Melky and Hughes for Cabrera.

Melky, Kennedy, Marquez, Zach McCallister for Miguel Cabrera though would be fair.

I wouldn't read too much into his answer about that. I mean he can't very well say "Yeah, we're going to be a joke if those guys don't come back."

Well, not a joke Chip, but definitely in a direction.

Sorry Chip. I meant different direction.

Cashman's on the FAN now.

I'm soo pissed at A-Dick...

This would be a very nice day if not for having to listen to Donnie's heart break and hearing A-$hit rumors every 3 minutes!!

I was really looking forward to Girardi being selected even though from all I heard it would be Mattingly.

I would've been fine with Donnie too but I really wanted Girardi but Boras and A-Coward had to go and ruin it...

I'll say that I really like this Miguel Cabrera talk.

Sure he could be a miserable bust but his "upside" is undeniable and I'd feel very good about the team with someone of his caliber in the lineup.

I hope Joba go CLEMENS ON YOU A-Pu$$Y!!!

Phucker,
Boras has started whining and saying "why can't the Yanks just negotiate with A-Rod, just like they will with Mo and Jorge?" I think he may realize he needs the Yanks in the negotiations to get his client more money. His client is an *sshole by the way. He broke my kid's heart and I'm going to pay him back for it somehow.
I'll pay Joba's fine if it's above the belt...that's all I'm saying before Anthony goes on a "can't we all just hug and love each other" rant.

While not as, um, militant as PTRS, I do agree. If A-ROd doesn't want to wear pinstripes anymore, then let him go, once you are no longer a Yankee you no longer matter - period.

Jim A.
You can bet the house on at least 1 pitch up an all the way in, if Joba faces A-Fraud. Hopefully, above the protective arm gear.

I hope so Mike.

The Yankee conference call was a lot of nothing except that neither Girardi nor Cashman sounded confident that Posada, Rivera and Pettite would all be back.

Grampa,

They sure talk a lot and say nothing.

I wonder if any of them worked for the CIA.

Grampa, the Mattingly conference call was just as "informative". The only thing that became clear is that Mattingly is not very articulate. Sincere-sounding, but not articulate.

Somebody posted earlier about Mattingly looked like a deer in the headlights when dealing with the media. Hearing him struggle to express himself clearly I can see why.

So who is it they think they might not get back? Any info?

Hey Mark,

I just went over to your blog and it looks good.

Don't want to stick my neck out too far, but Rivera showed up in tampa with agent & aides in tow, so he's probably ready to deal. The question mark probably one of the others? Hope not both.

So will Father Joe be picking his nose in LA next year? Will Mr.Sandman and [hole in my mitt ]Posada be joining him? Will the NY media stop boiling the same potato every day? Will Rick Keys reveal who he will be keeping stats on next year?
It's going to be a long winter but in the end the Yanks will still be in the hunt next year.
