« Mattingly to be on conference call | Main | A recap »

Girardi to talk at 4:30

Joe Girardi's conference call, with Brian Cashman, is scheduled for 4:30, so I'll pass on comments from that then.

Comments (79)

I hope someone asks them about the Rivera meeting, and I hope it's good news.

How about a press conference in the Bronx next week with Girardi, O'Neill,Jeter, Rivera, Posada and Pettitte. That will raise some spirits. And it would also be a collective F-you to Arod

cso7: Hell yeah!

Sell the team...This century you will always be in second place.

p.s Girardi sounds like a moron. Bad call!

GOT NEW RINGS,
So, on the day your team celebrates it's World Series victory, you are hanging out on a Yankees blog all day and listening to a the new Yanks manager on a conf. call.

Your team won, you don't have to be so obsessed with the Yankees anymore.

GOT NEW RING WORMS! Thats what happens when you don't bathe. But Bosox fans know this already.

Mad Dog is garbage! Repeat...Mad Dog is GARBAGE!

Jim,

Just goes to prove what you already knew - the Red Sox will ALWAYS be the second story.

I'm soo pissed at A-Dick...

This would be a very nice day if not for having to listen to Donnie's heart break and hearing A-$hit rumors every 3 minutes!!

I was really looking forward to Girardi being selected even though from all I heard it would be Mattingly.

I would've been fine with Donnie too but I really wanted Girardi but Boras and A-Coward had to go and ruin it...

I'll say that I really like this Miguel Cabrera talk.

Sure he could be a miserable bust but his "upside" is undeniable and I'd feel very good about the team with someone of his caliber in the lineup.

I hope Joba go CLEMENS ON YOU A-Pu$$Y!!!

Pena will remain on the coaching staff.

Source for my post above (sorry Grampa, I should have noted it): Cashman on his conf. call.

I missed everything. Just got back online. Anyone up for typing a recap of the conference call?

I missed everything. Just got back online. Anyone up for typing a recap of the call?

Sooooooo funny to see you all sweat and cry. 99% of you will jump to the Mets when they start winning. Let me guess you became fans in 96?

Your organization is a joke. You treat Bernie Williams like crap, Mattingly, Gator, Pettite, and now torre.

Enjoy this century....We got 2 you got NADA !!!

The conference call went like this:

We have no rings this century, we booted Torre out the door, we lied to Mattingly, and now we are rebuilding.

Torre is about to sign with LA and bring Rivera with him!

Other then that, you did not miss much!

To all red sox fans: congrats for your second world series in four years. We are definitely now chasing you. But before you puff out your chests too much, remember that you have to win 19 more World Series titles to equal our mark. The Yankees still are and will always be the standard for all sports franchises. Enjoy your title, you earned it, but don't forget the facts.

...I thought 2000 was the start of the century...didn't we win braggin rights then???

Paulie on the coaching staff would be like having Gator there, a PR move. Old fans love to see their favorite players back in the uni. Doesn't necessarily make sense in terms of coaching skills, but plays well on YES.

Actually 2001 is consider the start of the new century...It is 2-0.

At least you have history books to look at your OLD RINGS !

SORRY FOR MY ABOVE COMMENTS! IAM JUST A TYPICAL REDSUX FAN! IAM A REAL A$$HOLE

I hate calling 2001 the first year of the new century

It's 2000

Sully,

Technically...its 2001 but who really cares. My wife happened to be in Boston on business and the parade went right by the hotel she was at. She said it was a great crowd and everyone was having a blast. Something about the players riding in "Ducks"???? I didn't get what she was talking about but she said thats what the fans were calling the vehicles.

Anyway congrats!

Brief quote:

"So A-Rod might cost $30 million a year. The Marlins receive about $30 million a year in revenue sharing. Imagine that, Hank Steinbrenner: You could be paying Rodriguez to play for the Marlins."

Bill Shaikin, sports columnist for the LA Times.

JTF,

Every team pays into revenue sharing, not just the Yanks.

JTF,

Oh, and as of 2009 the Yanks and Mets pay nothing into revenue sharing. Just The Facts!!

Nudge.

I know that 2001 is mathematically the beginning of the new decade/century/millenium

But come on! The fun part was seeing ALL the numbers change.

I was at my friend's apartment on 52nd and 10th Avenue at midnight, January 1, 2000.

OK, back to baseball

Sully,

Unfortunately I was in the bathroom fishing someones cigarette butt out of my wife cleavage. Kind of a buzz kill!

Nudgie, son, notice the quote marks? The sourcing? That means that I was QUOTING.

Just so you'll know next time.

Now wash your hands and do your homework.

Hey GOT NEW RINGS, the RS also started out the 20th century with a bunch of WS rings but look at the latter part of that century.

Lol. Given the Boston's propensity to blow things and that there's still a lot of years left in this century, I wouldn't celebrate just yet if I were you.

JTF,

Why is that relevant? Wrong is Wrong. Thats why I am here. To keep it real.

Mark Kreidler writes (ESPN.com):

"So the Dodgers' delayed but (now) heartfelt pursuit of Torre really shapes up as merely a great move on the board. For one, Torre can manage a little bit. For two, he's the kind of man to whom a player of certain cachet and self-opinion -- not to mention pedigree and history of production -- will gravitate.

And if hiring Torre means having long and interesting discussions with an open-minded and interested A-Rod and Boras, then it's the kind of move that can ultimately set lots and lots of the pawns in motion. It's also a win-win for the Dodgers, pure and clean."

That's the kind of conversation I was foretelling when I predicted last week that ex-NYY reunions in SoCal could be on the horizon.

JTF,

"A survey of the world population has determined that the NY Yankees are the cause of global warming and world hunger and they should be all thrown in jail"

"Other sources say that blogging Yankee fans will be rounded up and prosecuted for conspiracy to aid and abate known felons"

Note the quotes.

Back to your homework, Nudgie.

Quotes don't count without attribution. (Look it up.)

Don't come back until you've finished studying for your English test.

Gramps,
A-Rod will go to the highest bidder, not the nicest manager. He doesn't give a sh*t who the manager is, he cares who the CFO is.

I'm sorry but I still can't see Rivera and Posada going to the NL. Rivera should retire as a Yankee and Posada, at 35, probably shoudn't catch every day so DHing once per week or so should appeal to him. Pettitte is a tougher call, he loves Torre, but how much? Enough to leave the Yanks again and not go home?

JTF,

So if my wife says something stupid...I can post it as fact as long as I attribute it?

How about posting the stupid quote with the REALIZATION that its wrong.

Oh, thats right....you THOUGHT it was correct to, didn't you.

Boy you got suckered. Hahahaha.

Thats what you get for listening to those media morons so that you have some blogging material.

Stupid is as stupid does.

Love your stuff, Jim A., except when you do the mind-reading act.

But leaving the Rodriguez thing aside. I think Rivera is close to signing with the Yankees, judging from the fact that he and his minions converged on Tampa today.

I'm not as sure about the other, unfortunately, but perhaps you are right about both. We can hope.

JTF,

If your going to name yourself Just The Facts, you should start with having some. Otherwise you may as well name yourself...Just An Adult...or Been On A Date.

Nudgie, for the last time, no more conversation with the grownups until you do your homework. Tantrums will get you ignored. And you know how you hate that.

Grampa,
I'm hoping Posada will want to stay in NY as he just expanded his home in Manhatten, but that doesn't rule out the Mets who were expected to pursue Pudge Rodriguez or Posada and now it is probably down to Posada since Detroit picked up Pudge's option.

Like you, I can only hope.

Nudge,

Good to see you around. How have you been?

Have you been to the museum?

Well about Girardi ...

Very nice quote in Newsday by Zim saying Girardi has a degree from Northwestern and could be an engineer.

Very classy ...

It will be strange to see Torre and Mattingly go. But the team messed up with Torre and Mattingly just has had enough after four years of waiting. But he should stick around. This is the only team he knows or should know. It is a lesson on many levels for all of us though.

ACL,,
Sorry to say I haven't yet. The tail end of this summer has been a blast for me but has seriously restricted my free time. I will though and I wrote down you Phone number you posted. When I go I would like to give you a shout if thats OK.

Just The Facts said "I had an accident in my pants"

To all the Red Sox fans ...

Way to go.

But already it will be "Can you do it again next year." Like Solomon said, it is like striving after the wind. When is it ever enough? Never.

These teams ... we follow them but we have no personal accomplishments through them. The sense of satisfaction is great let's say after 86 years of waiting, or when the NY Rangers won in 94 after so many years ... but now the Sox fans will expect to win the WS every year! Like Ozzie Guillen will "expect" Chavez to win the next "election" in Venezuela! Ha,ha

As for who should be here.

Torre should stay, announce, not cry on the air, and be with his brother who is not well.

Girardi is where he should be.

Pena must stay to teach and coach and be in the wings. He is the grown up adult to make sure the party doesn't get too out of hand.

Mattingly should have stayed but Rudy on Texas can be a hitting coach. You have to swallow your pride for the sake of the team.

If Mo goes to LA to put out the fires, literally and figuratively, no problem. Bring out Joba and sign Percival and get Gregg. Mo will be gone soon anyway.

If Posada goes, start Molina who is very good, get Piazza, Bard, draft someone from USC.

If A-Rod goes ... oh he did ... Chavez, Larry M. likes Crede, move Cano.

With all this money ...

With all this equity ...

Why would anyone dare not to be optimistic? (Oh I forgot Cashman's never ending "moves.")

It's 1995 all over again.

If only we could have Josh Hamilton instead of Abreau as the new O'Neil.

Get Eckstein to leadoff as the next Knoblauch. Put him at 2B if you must.

Horne and Sanchez must develop so we can trade them for Johan or Kazmir ... or keep them and have them do well.

Then we will round into shape. We need bold moves, not bellyaching about rebuilding.

If not ... it will be frustrating to root for the Yanks.

Ivana Trump should have a nice dress and a nice dinner with all her wealth.

So should the Yanks. Only WS wins, not dresses. We don't rebuild. We reload.

But if I were the Red Sox I would go for the kill and get Johan or Kazmir. That will be the vampire's stake for the next three years if they do that. Instead they'll probably rummage through Japan hoping to find another jewel. They've done it twice!

I like the idea of O'Neill coming back, but forget coaching. Let's get him back in the lineup! How about at DH?

Something had to be up with Mo being at Legends Field with agent and staff in tow. Hopefully we get these guys signed quick so we can get ready for the hot stove season.

BBB,

Yanks have a 15 day window in which they only can negotiate with their FA's. Thats why he was there. His comment was "I came here see something". You can make what you want out of that limited comment.

"...when told that Torre was a likely candidate to become his new manager at the Dodgers, reliever Scott Proctor tried to applaud, but was unable to move his throwing arm due to past overuse."

Ed,

You didn't attribute that quote so it doesn't count and must be stricken from the record.

Really, ask Just The Facts. He is really up on this stuff.

Nudge,

Shut your filthy mouth and get lost, you classless piece of $hit.

We're getting a little high and mighty on this blog these days aren't we?

I always thought Red Sox fans were the nastiest most classless pieces of garbage -- until I met this Nudge character. He's at the bottom of the lowlife totem pole and Red Sox fans are very slightly above him

Can't we all just get along?

Nudge,

I met with Larry M. here in Florida and that was great.

He is an awesome guy. He knows baseball!!!!

My number is 314 412 6738.

I hope you are well.

I am thinking of writing an article, "How to Fix the Yankees." Then I can finally put all of this to rest. Everyone has all of their own ideas and that's fine.

And Nudge make sure you see Sidney at the meuseum. He is 94 or something like that and saw Babe Ruth play at Shore Road. Where we used to play as kids and teens.

Nudge,

What your wife was describing were
"Ducks" ...

I believe they are WWII era boats.

(T.E.) Lawrence of Arabia invented the first Hovercraft to scoot along on water ... they are some kind of troop ship for open launches.

Nudge, I mean, can't we Yankee fans and Red Sox fans and Mets fans all get along?

Man!
Ant puts down his phone number!

Guts my friend.
Guts

Think of how many things you have to go through before you even get a chance to lose to us again:

*cold and flu season
*annoying in laws during the holiday season.
*basketball
*Pats victory parade
*Snowy highways
*long work weeks
*rain
etc. etc. etc. etc.

Enjoy The Demise Losahs

New Rings,

As a rule Red Sox fans make the dumbest most ignorant statements -- but yours are truly a cut below the rest (below Nudge's even). Are you really as stupid as you sound? Wow -- I didn't think anyone could survive being as brain dead as you. Your comments are giving me a good laugh though. You're a real joke!!

Just to put my two cents into the conversation. The Yankees have 2 or 3 third basemen to pursue. There is Crede(29) and Balock(27) (Tex.) and Caberera (24)(Fl.)

I believe Mo, Posada and Andy will be back with the Yankees. Remember there is a connection to the yankees which will not be the same coming out of adiffrent dugout other than the one on the first base side of the Stadium old or new. If the projections of 3 years both in the 40+ million is not good enough. Well Adios amigos. There are limits to everyrhing but signing Mo means the yankees are for real. Pettitte and Jorge should follow. The Yankees are the 27 th teamin the majors with the fewest players under 29. Its time for transition.

ESPN reports the conference call in which Grady Little and LAD announce their mutual parting. Here's the link:

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071030&content_id=2288748&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Grampa, Pete Abraham is now reporting on his Journal News blog that LAD and Torre have agreed to 3 yrs for a little less than$15mil.

Fans in LA are blogging madly in favor, many stating that Torre will enable them to attract people who didn't want to play for LAD before.

I think re-signing Posada should be our top priority right now. No one we get to replace A-Rod will be capable of replacing his production. We can't take huge steps back at two positions.

That said, I'd like to sign Brad Ausmus as a backup.

To re-sign Posada it is going to take some deal that's too long (for an aging catcher)... adding Ausmus would allow us to spell Posada at DH more often, hopefully protecting his latter years.

Ausmus, never a slugger, would still better than your average backup. He is a 3-time Gold Glove Award winner, would be fantastic with our young pitchers, and is from CT.

Also, he's worked with Pettitte, so hopefully that will help with his decision.

Houston offered him $2 million for one year. I think we're capable of toping that.

Happy to be getting rid of the snobs. Glad the arrogant and greedy are gone. A-Rotten speaks for himself in every department. But even Torre and Mattingly fit in that category snubbing their nose at two of the greatest baseball jobs out there. Mattingly could have remained bench coach just as Pena is remaining in his coaching position. It's all about their pride and arrogance. With attitudes like this, no wonder the Yankees couldn't make it past the first round the last 3 years. Good riddance to all three.

Did anyone ever think it's possible that Pay-Rot's replacement could be more of a clutch hitter and help us win more games than Pay-Rot did? What good are all those runs and when most are excessive. Pay-Rot steals the thunder from teams he plays for just like he did during the World Series announcing his opting out. The man is a disease that sucks the life out of his teams with his constant need to be in the limelight. Adios Pay-Rot. We'll do better without you.

Does anyone know if A-Rotten legally opted out in writing or if he just made the announcement without necessary written notice? If not he's still under contract and could change his mind and stay. The Yankees would be able to get rid of him then I would think Don't know if the oral statement is binding. I'm sure it must be in writing.

That should read The Yankees would not be able to get rid of him then. I don't know if the oral statement is binding.

Yah but can any of you dance like PAPLEBON ???

Undefeated in World Series.

ZERO blown saves.

0.00 ERA

Any questions ????

There are no questions about Papelbon or your team. They're great and deserved to win. The question I have is about your sanity. You have some serious issues, Buddy. I'm starting to feel sorry for you because although your team has won, you prefer to come to a Yankees site and harass complete strangers for no logical reason. I'd suggest you seek some psychiatric help. You need it badly.

We are not envying your team. We are pittying you.

Actually I am a little nuts, yet this is just fun. You guys are wicked losers!

Seriously think of how long you are going to have to wait before you even get to play us again. Did you get the flu shot? That could make the time go slower if you get a wee bit sick.

Do you shovel your own drieveway? Think of how many times you have to do that while waiting to even play us!

ENJOY THE PATS WHILE YOU WAIT!!!! UNDEFEATED BABY !!

The NY Times is reporting that the Yankees are close to signing Dave Eiland to be their new pitching coach.

Does anybody have any info on who he is and how good is he?

it will be very strange to see torre the manager of another team. i know he has before, but for as long as i have been a yankee fan torre has been the manager. i know i have been spoiled with success.
anyway i think this a a great move for LA. it will definetly prove whether or not joe made the yankees or the yankees made joe.

somewhere scott proctor is crying himself to sleep.

No manager makes the team and no team amkes the mgr. Torre was the perfect man for the job. Where would Beleicheck be without Brady and vice versa.

You cannot judge Joe on what he does in LA....Simply not fair!

Have to agree with Anonymous about Mattingly and A-Rod ...

But they could have treated Torre better.

Call anytime Sully ... no problem. I am happy that you are happy the Red Sox won ... they came back in 04 and this year vs the Tribe so ... way to go!

As for who made who, it was the perfect storm in 96 and it all came together.

Leyritz HR off Wholers, and then Hayes' swinging bunt, Cone and Andy P pitching great! Torre brought in a then-NL-style of play. I liked Buck and Stanley, not Girardi and Torre. But who knew ...

It was what it was.

And it is what it is.

Still today about a third of the payroll is wasted.

We can't win with Abreu, Matsui, Damon, Pavano, Igawa, Giambi, Farns and Mussina as a major part of the core. An injury to Jeter and the team would be finished.

Andy Phillips, Duncan and Be A Mitt must be role players or platooning.

The main problem now, well, there are many, is that Cashman has saddled us with his terrific moves. Old, injured, declining players with attitude problems (Farns) ...

I repeat ... please get the following players

Johan or Kazmir
Ludwick or Rasmus
Bard and Piazza (if no C)
Eckstein for 2B
Move Cano to 3B
If no Cano move, Chavez
If no Chavez, Rolen
If no Rolen, Blalock
Gregg from the Marlins
Hamilton and Phillips from the Reds
Lefties for the bullpen

That's six trades to revamp the team.

Rolen is problematic. A shell of the Philly days and as I wrote, Mulder and Carpenter needed double surgeries for the same injuries and the Card's doctors are under fire. It was in the St. Louis Post- Dispatch.

We need Gabe Paul and we need him now.

Eric,

Eiland is apparently the genius behind the young pitching phenoms.

I want the team to hire Mazzone and leave Eiland down on the farm with Horne, Sanchez, Brackman and Carpenter and Co ... then bring him up mid summer but I guess they will bring him in now.

He is young and smart. He was a so so pitcher but is loyal to the organization and knows mechanics and strategy. What more do you need?

Ant,
You can't call up coaches like September call-ups, you will have to fire someone to make room on your staff which is limited to a certain number.

I think you are way off base on Mattingly, for like the fifteenth time since you just keep re-posting the same stuff. Did you hear his conference call yesterday? Did that make any sense to you at all? You are running the guy down when he simply did not have a choice and that "it should be an honor to work for the Yankees" is nonsense, it's a job and if he stayed with the Yankees he would be considered just a Yankee guy and would never get looked at by any other organizations as a credible coach, so now he can experience life outside of the Yankees organization and get his name spread around a little more. If he and Torre are together, well then his chance of replacing Torre (67 yrs old) in LA is probably better than his chance of replacing Girardi (43)in NY.
If you decide to write an article on "how to fix the Yankees" and you base it on any of your poss "get Kazmir, get Brandon Phillips, get Josh Hamilton ..." you will be laughed out of any publishers office. None of those moves makes any sense whatsoever, this is not fantasy baseball so players have to actually be available.

Jeff S: Ausmus' option was picked up by the Astros, he's there for at least next season.

New Rings: "We" didn't lose to "you". The Red Sox did not beat the Yankees to win the World Series and the Yankees won the season series against Red Sox, keep that in mind will ya?
"You" are very lucky "we" didn't play "you" in the first round of the playoffs or the only dancing Papelbon would be doing is in his boyfriend's apartment. That dude is a straight up freak.

CALANDER YEARS 2000 is the begining for example 1900 is not part of the 1800's in calander years

Nothing is a start in calender years then comes 1.

In eastern ways 0 is cipher which is recylce to begin again being that 9 is the most powerful single number

The Whole World celebrated the New Millennium in the Year 2000 -- not 2001. The Whole World celebrated with their hearts, their minds, their spirits -- not with their math books and their calculators.

Percisley Soul Man -

11:59 pm is yesturday

12:00am is today a NEW DAY

Thanks Ant Colony. If he is the person behind our crop of good young pitchers than I feel confident that he will make a good pitching coach up here.
