News of the day
I forgot to post links to a couple stories from today: one on decisions to be made on the Yankees' big free agents-to-be, one on the effect of not trading for Eric Gagne, and an interesting story by Ken Davidoff that includes a chat with Bernie Williams.

So What (from 2 threads ago): Your statement that the Red Sox are in first place and will probably make the playoffs is true.
The statements about the Mets and Yanks, I have to argue. Right now, the Yanks are closer to making the playoffs than the Mets with a lower magic number. Your logic is impaired and your ignorance is obvious. So, do us all a favor and shut it.
Marianne (from 2 threads ago): I have been jarring with my friends about the Mets fall as they gave me a hard time all year as a Yankee fan, but I didn't want it on this blog. I enjoy the company of one of our Red Sox fans (Sully), but not much the others. No need to get idiotic Met fans on here too.
I agree with Hughes. Let's not kick up the Met's fans. I do find it funny though that we haven't from any of them lately. I do recall in the beginning of the year there were a couple of them crowing about their awesome team. Where are they now.......maybe floating away like their playoff hopes? Just an observation. LOL
Idiotic met fans stay away!
They don't even post on their blog. We out number them like 4 to 1 as far as posting goes.
They have major pitching issues.
Funny though. In the first Subway Series at Shea in May, everyone (not Yankee fans) was talking about how Reyes and Wright were better than Jeter and A-Rod. I like Wright and I think that he's a good ballplayer, but you can keep Reyes.
Anyway, we have a tough series coming up now and I want to take 3 out of 4 from Toronto.
In case any of you guys are interested, Joe Torre will be on Mike and the Mad Dog at 5 east coast time and on Kay's show on ESPN1050, they are going to link up with ESPN890 in Boston at the same time. If you call Kay's show at that time (during that segment) you'll be heard in Boston as well as NY and the Boston fans will be heard in NY as well as Boston. basically, it will be a "radio fight".
If you don't live in the NY metro area (I don't) then you are out of luck as far as calling in. They (ESPN1050) won't accept calls from out of state.
Do you really want to listen to an ESPN radio show featuring Boston fans? I'd rather have root canal.
Funny how Nudge disappeared as soon as the Yankees started tearing up the MLB. If the Mets don't make the playoffs, you won't hear from him again.
I've seen a couple of posts in Nudge's style but with different moniker lately.
He didn't like being ID'd as a Mets fan, thought every comment he made would be prejudged.
I don't think he's as far away from here as he seems...
Anon,
"Panic" makes for good radio.
Don't you think?
Don't you want to have a few laughs?
NUDGE!!!
HEY NUDGE WHERE ARE YOU!!!
I want you explain to me again how we're only gonna win 85 games and that how desperately important the last series with Baltimore will be.
WHERE ARE YOU NUDGE!!
lol
Call me a fool (and I've been called worse) but what does PTRS stand for?
PTRS stands for Phuck The Red Sox.
Sully,
Dude I saw your movie. It was hillarious!
Oh, we have lots and lots of questions for Nudge, and there are a million comments where he must explain why he was wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong...yeah, Mr. Know it all Nudge-face disappeared in timely fashion cuz he knew we would torment his dumb a** after all those dumb a** anti-Yankees comments he made.
Sully
8 or so months ago when I first began posting here I used a moniker of "Phucktheredsox"
Two of our female regulars who sadly seem to have vanished (Diane & Lucy)suggested that I use my given name instead so as a result I abbreviated the Phuckthesox part so people would still know who I was.
That's why many still call me "Phucker"-which I still find funny :)
Youre not a fool. This was all way before your time.
I think Diane and Lucy would've liked you and you would've like them.
Maybe they're hanging out with "Ruse Ca"
He could be a pain when he started thinking his 'little Sir Echo' number with Casual Observer was cute but Nudge could have some good questions and comments sometimes on his own.
I kind of liked having him around in another guise since he couldn't do the duet thing without giving himself away.
Yo I don't know what you guy’s are talking about. I never said anything disrespectful about the Yankees. I hold them with the highest regard. They are the team of all teams! I didn't even know there was another team in NY. I always though they were an American Legion league team with a stadium with a stupid apple. I am very offended by your remarks. I will now cry myself to sleep!
CasNudgualObserver is not the same person.
Oops, just got a message from the scizophrenia ward at Bellevue. It turns out Casnudgualobserver is the same person after all. Sorry for that, folks.
Sully has a movie?
Yeah. Check it out. Here is the link to him and his movie on IMDB. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0838282/
Casual Observer and Nudge definitely not the same guy but they used to enjoy getting a riff going when anybody around here would bite. Imitators are easy to spot due to crude thinking and limited vocabulary.
As Michael says, things have changed, some people we enjoyed seem to be gone (Lucy, Diane, ruse ca) and others who were frequent posters a few months ago when I found this board now only show up occasionally (Chip, Bronx Bomber, even Michael).
He is the writer and director of the movie.
Nudge Packer is not trying to imitate Nudge. He's just joking around. Nudge wouldn't dare show up here right now. He only shows up when the Yankees lose and suck.
Marianne
I agree.
Nudge and Casual however peculiar it is that they seem to always show up at the same time I don't think they are the same person.
I like you admit to enjoying a lot of what they had to say despite the occasional Yankee bashing.
They were fun if not infuriating or most of the time both LOL
Get it straight, I am not the same guy.
Wow "Not Nudge", you are a genius. Now I know why everybody hates Yankee fans.
That's right, it's just a coincidence I always come around at the same exact time.
Stop crying about Yankee fans, Nudge Packer, You sound like a damn sissy.
Before Nudge Packer has a hissy fit, I'm just playing around about Nudge and CasOb. Just feeling frisky at the end of a long day is all...if that's alright with you, Nudge Packing pea brain.
I must admit I do miss:
Fish...barrel.....bang.
Those/that guy(s) made a good team.
They always added excitement. It kept the blog a little spicy. I am sure he will come on the blog to congratulate us when we make the playoffs. Not! LOL
Jim A
Fish...Barrel...Bang.
LOL
They were funny when they got on a roll.
I'm sorry I missed all of the early season fun on this blog, but am glad I've joined the "crew" as of late.
Cas & Nudge are quite different. Cas disappeared recently because I put the damned red-neck in his place. He could no longer refer to people as "mental midgets" when it was obvious that I was his intellectual superior. Then, the Red Sox lost 2 / 3 (like I told him they would and that when they did he would have to kiss my ring). His last siting was after the Red Sox won last Saturday, asking that I kiss his ring. When they lost Sunday, he vanished. He is a true coward and lost any respect I once had for him. I used to appreciate two Boston fans on this site (Sully & Cas), but now only Sully. To me, Sully is a true baseball fan who just happened to choose a team that I despise and I'm ok with that.
HYD,
Nah, don't worry, Casual Observer has been through much more here than that. He's actually been 'away' a couple of times -- once he told us in advance he'd be away for business reasons, another time he just didn't show up for a while, but insults don't drive him off.
Yankee wins and/or Red Sox losses drive Casual Observer away.
Since Casual Observer works from home, he made a business trip all right -- from the living room to the ledge.
Just joke, CO, just joking. All in fun, no harm intended.
Step away from that ledge, Casual, the RS will make the playoffs. But when they lose in the first round, then you can jump right into that fish barrel for that bang you love to blog about.
There is no business where Cas lives in Maine...only Red Necks and Trees intertwined by a few dirt roads.
It was insults that scared him off, but shame. He no longer felt like an intellectual superior, he no longer had his claim for the Red Sox greatness, and he didn't want to "kiss my ring". It's all too fitting.
HYD,
Don't look now, but you're getting more grandiose than Casual and Nudge!
You have the excuse, I gather, of extreme youth, but trust me -- it's more fun if we all treat each other with respect here.
Off now to whip up one of those feasts that my Grillmeister loves... see you later...
Maybe Casob is too busy looking in the dictionary for brand new insults for Yankee fans on this site. I guess the words knuckledraggers, fish...barrel...bang, pissants and mental midgets are becoming too boring even for him. Time to refresh the vocab.
Today I asked my pet hamster if the Yankees were going to win… He didn’t answer. The last time he didn’t answer they won, so I’m guessing Wang will have his 19th win of the season tonight.
I think he didn’t answer because he didn’t want to jinx them. I sure hope I’m not jinxing them by posting this comment about my hamster.
Boston will be Boston tonight and play like Boston usually plays.
I’m a Yankee fan and didn’t want to jinx Boston “a win” by saying they were going to lose tonight.
This jinxing could get very confusing sometimes.
Boston will win tonight!!!
I've always been pompous, I just generally keep it cool. There have been a few instances where I've taken offense to a posting or poster and let it out.
Cas, formerly respected, denied wearing rose-colored glasses and accused me of such. His albatross for ignorance annoyed me as his post was shortly after I had predicted the Yanks to lose 2/3 in a series (they ended up takng 2/3). As a result, he became my punching bag.
My previous joist with Larry was just that, a joist. A battle of young vs. old. I took offense to one of his posts and retorted. He mis-quoted me, making me sound like a malcontent, so I struck back venomously.
As I said to begin my post, I've always been pompous and always will be.
For those unaware, pompous is a synonym for grandiose in some contexts.
Joust not joist. Sorry for the typo.
Anon (probably not the Anon who is the self appointed blog sheriff, I will guess)
You saw my movie?
You mean the preview?
Or were you at a screening?
Joe Torre Report on WFAN.
HYD,
I understand your disgust with Cas who can be very nasty to Yankee fans who talk $hit about the Sox. But Larry is a great guy, very respectful, been here a long time. I think you misunderstood his intentions because he means no harm, trust me. He's a great Yankee fan who deserves respect, just like you.
MICHAEL PTRS,
Where the hell have you been, pal? Been missing you. You add spice and life to this blog like no other. Don't be staying away too long again, nomsayin?
Torre is comfortable with Moose as the 4th starter in the post season. He's been happy with the way he's pitched in the last 2 starts.
Kennedy is scrathed for tomorrow's start with a bad back. Clemens pitches tomorrow and Moose on Sunday.
I think they should be Kennedy
Nobody on the Angels nor the Indians (or Red Sox for that matter) have seen the kid. They aren't 100% sure what to expect and he's 3 for 3 in good outings.
I think Mussina should come out of the pen
Oh well
He's not afraid to play Giambi at first in the post season. Meintkeiwicz will be in the mix at first along with Betemit.
Giambi will also be part of a DH platoon with Damon and Matsui.
Torre is opting for the series with the extra day if the Yanks have the choice.
He'll go with the experience Sully. In Torre's eyes, all things being equal beetween Moose and Kennedy (based on Moose's last 2 starts) he goes with the veteran.
End of the Joe Torre report on WFAN.
Michael PTRS,
Nudge is busy filming "The Pimp from Lindenhurst." It will be on ABC this Fall on Friday nights at 8 pm EST.
If any of you can, tune into ESPN1050 in NY. They're simulcasting with ESPN890 in Boston.
Good stuff.
This is funny!!!
One Yankee fan is lamenting that NY is "infested" with Bostonites. Kay just said that Boston hats have come out of the woodwork in NY. The Boston guy just said that the Red Sox are more popular in the world than the Yanks are.
You guys have to tune into this stuff.
Hillary,
lol
your hamster ranks right up there with Scooter the Squirrel
If the Red Sox blow this lead, it's bigger than Bucky Dent.
Quote from Boston.
I think it is nuts...
When Torre started relying on kids instead of the veterans is when this team took off!
NO RODENT IS BIGGER THAN SCOOTER!!!!!!!
No argument from me Sully.
can't they just be friends?
Scooter and the hamster?
no joisting? (or whatever that was)
The kids are going to be on the post season roster.
Chamberlain, Kennedy, Duncan, Hughes will all be there.
Now Kay and the Boston radio guy are getting into it.
You know what they say when someone goes missing for a while then re-appears, then goes missing again for a while....REHAB! Good luck Cas Ob, getting that Yankee squirrel off your back! Go Yanks! Kay-Mouth is a JINX! Go Scooter! Here we come Nation! Comin to get ya!
John G, thanks for updates, keep them coming.
Mike,
I know that you don't like Kay, but you would have been proud of him. he held his own with the Boston guy.
Kookie Wookie (AKA Ant),
I think that Scooter would accept the hampster....
if he can climb the foul pole that is.
They're (WFAN and ESPN) are talking about football now.
That's a disaster! Well, for me it is anyway.
Can you imagine if Scooter showed up in Boston and was on the foul pole in Fenway?
Some Red Sox fan would have mistaken it for vittles.
Kennedy out for the season. Tough break, but with Torre as manager he was never going to pitch in the playoffs anyways.
Just heard that Ortiz is playing tonight against Kazmir.
Red Sox fan,
Where did you hear that?
If Ortiz didn't they'd have to put Scooter in the cleanup spot.
And frankly, I don't think he'd pass through waivers
He would be a better attraction than Eddie Gadel.
Although, if Scooter got hit by a pitch, he'd be killed.
Scooter would be a heck of a pinch runner
In keeping up with the "quotes" on the Yanks fate in the early part of the season, I offer this little tidbit to all of you:
It'll be Boston vs. New York come October
Mets, not Yankees, will be in showdown against Red Sox in postseason
This article was written by a guy named Bill Chuck on May 30th. It can be found on MSNBC's website.
Go to www.msnbc.com
click on sports in the left hand column
click on baseball
scroll down and you'll see the headline.
How funny would it be if he got caught in a rundown?
The firstbase coach would be yelling "don't run out of the basepath"
Talk about a Bugs Bunny cartoon moment.
Kennedy has a muscle strain in his upper back. As far as I know, he's just missing one start.
John G.,
It's about time! Kay has finally grown a pair. Whew, and I was thinking he might remain a bachelor forever. Waiting to see the stats for the amount of suicides over at Shea and later on in the playoffs in Maine. Don't worry, Mutt fans, you will make it. At least you don't have to convince The Nation their boys are gonna be in the dance (Met fan cry babies, Wahh, wahhh!).
I just pulled this from the Boston Globe; author Bob Ryan:
Your Sawx
Since May 29: 54-48 (.529).
In September: 10-8, 4.61 ERA.
Hot starter: Josh Beckett, 3-0, 2.45 ERA in September.
Ryan's comment: “Simply put, I fear that their best baseball is behind them. ... Sure, if they could have started the playoffs in June when they were getting quality start after quality start and Okey-Dokey was untouchable and Youkilis was on base every five seconds and a few other things, they would have won. Then. But this is now. Is this a team that inspires confidence?
They sound a bit worried, don't they?
I'll go back and get that link and post it.
Ryan rates all of the AL playoff teams.
He rated the Tribe 1st, Yanks 2nd, "The AL Team from Orange County" 3rd, and Sox 4th.
Isn't Kennedy's inning max coming up? I think that combined with the injury should sideline Kennedy for the season. Yankees need him taking Clemens spot in the rotation next season, right?
Here the link to Ryan's analysis:
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/gallery/09_21_07_ryan/
Red Sox fan,
He'll be on the post season roster. You can count on it.
Besides, Kennedy and the Yanks' playoff starters should be the least of your worries.
You should be concerned with your boys righting the ship and stringing some W's together.
Remember, Marianne,
Caps used for EMPHASIS, not screaming (as previously stated). Only girls scream. A lot of screaming going on at Shea and in Beantown right about now.
Mike, don't make it so easy!
Girls will have to go, "Fish... barrel... bang!"
