Yankees lose 7-6 in 10 innings
The Yankees lost 7-6 in 10 innings. Ryan Budde's walkoff double was his first RBI in the major leagues.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – It was the sort of back-and-forth game that often winds up as a win for the home team.
Last night’s did as well, with the Angels beating the Yankees 7-6 in 10 innings on a walkoff double by Ryan Budde. The 28-year-old rookie had a whopping 11 at-bats to his name prior to last night, and the RBI double off Sean Henn (2-1) was the first RBI of his career.
Budde’s hit carried into deep right center field and dropped just between centerfielder Melky Cabrera and rightfielder Bobby Abreu, perhaps two feet beyond the grasp of Cabrera.
“I thought there was a little bit of a chance to catch it if I dove,” Cabrera said. “But if I dove, it was going to go over my head. I didn’t have a chance.”
So the Angels walked off winners, with Howie Kendrick scoring easily from second base. The Yankees fell five games behind the Red Sox in the American League East and 1 ½ games behind the Mariners in the wild card chase.
“This is a game that you flip a coin,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said, “and we didn’t win the coin flip.”
Both teams had their chances. The Angels led twice before the final margin of victory, the Yankees led at one point and they were tied after Jorge Posada’s two-run homer in the eighth.
Mariano Rivera nearly allowed a run for the fourth time in nine days when he pitched the bottom of the ninth. After quickly recording the first two outs, Rivera gave up a single ground to leftfield to Vladimir Guerrero and a single chopped high down the first base line to Garret Anderson. But Gary Matthews Jr. ground out to Robinson Cano to end the inning.
An inning earlier, a clutch play by Wilson Betemit at first base kept the score tied. With the score tied and runners on second and third for the Angels, Betemit scooped up a grounder hit sharply to first by Maicer Izturis, then fired home to Posada in time for Posada to tag Matthews out at home.
Yankees reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who had allowed the first two batters that inning to reach base, managed to strike out Reggie Willits to end the inning.
The Yankees had been in position to win before Luis Vizcaino failed to clean up after Phil Hughes’s night ended with runners on first and second and one out in the bottom of the seventh. Vizcaino entered and gave up a game-tying RBI single up the middle to Chone Figgins. He then gave up an RBI single to Orlando Cabrera, and a fielder’s choice that scored a run to Guerrero.
That three-run inning by the Angels put them ahead 6-4. But Posada tied things up with a two-run homer off Justin Speier in the top of the eighth. That also scored Alex Rodriguez, who singled to lead off the inning.
Rodriguez was a big reason the Yankees were in the game. His two-run homer off Chris Bootcheck – a line drive shot to leftfield that was Rodriguez’s 40th homer of the season – gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. He also drove in an earlier run.
Hughes pitched better than his final numbers, which showed he allowed five earned runs on four hits and five walks in 6 1/3 innings. Hughes was in disbelief at the number of walks, saying he could not remember walking five batters at any point in his life.
“I don’t think I’ve ever walked five guys in two games, let alone one,” Hughes said. “That was something that really hit me hard.”
Hughes was pitching in his hometown for the first time in his brief major league career. He left 33 tickets, and turned down even more requests. Yet he said he was not nearly as nervous as in his major league debut at Yankee Stadium in April. And he did not even know where his friends and family had sat during the game.
His parents, Phil Hughes Sr., and Dori Hughes, sat beneath the first overhang behind the Yankees dugout, accompanied by agent Nez Balelo and a slew of other Hughes fans. Hughes Sr. was so intent on watching his son that he said he couldn’t talk during the game, saying only, “It’s been great having him home.”
Balelo sat next to Hughes Sr. and said: “It’s a wonderful experience. He’s worked hard to get here. I’m sure it’s a little nerve-wracking for him pitching here in Anaheim for the first time, but it’s been great.”
Hughes was quite good for most of his outing last night, aside from allowing a three-run double to Jeff Mathis in the second inning. He loaded the bases that inning on a Matthews double and a pair of walks. Then Mathis cleared the bases by doubling to the left field corner.
In the subsequent four innings, Hughes let only one runner reach second base. But the seventh inning turned out to be another story, due in part to Vizcaino’s failure to shut down the inning. Still, Torre was pleased.
“I think this was by far the most competitive game he’d pitched,” Torre said, “because of what he had to come back from.”
Said Hughes: “I had to fight tonight, no question.”
Darren Oliver (1-0) pitched the 10th for the win for the Angels.

Hughes needs to bring it to the next level.
Visciano was due for a bad game.
Henn layed an egg.
A real postseason atmosphere.
Yanks came up a little short.
Jet lag?
Just can't beat these guys. Moose against Escobar tonight. Doesn't look good.
sure, the Angels should find the Yankees sleeping between midnight and 2 a.m...while they are still wide awake at home...nice advantage Angels...
Good Morning all. Sorry I have missed the blog for a while but unfortunately I had a death in the family. My sister in law was killed in a car accident. The accident was caused by an 18 year old girl who was texting while she was driving and crossed the yellow line and there was a head on collision. I am sorry to bring down the blog but I just wanted to get the word out about the dangers of texting and driving. If you have any kids who drive, or even yourself, please think before you send a text while you are driving. I know from experience that it really is a matter of life and death. Ok that is the end of my Public Service Announcement. When I was away I did not have time to keep up with the team. Did we win three out of four from Detroit? I think so but I am not sure. Also, can we ever beat the Angels?
1 down, 6 to go to get back to where you belong: 12 out!
Thank you Buddy Who?
Cali sweep com'in up!
No chance against Escobar & Lackey in Southern Cal
Dopey,
California has been on the East coast the past week or so, just like the Angels. They played the same time on Sunday and took the same flight time back to Cali for Monday night's game. Face it: The Angels are just better than the Yankees....that's all!
Stop with the typical Yankee fan "cop outs" to validate your team's loss: "Oh they were tired". They'll be even more tired after 6 more games and no day off coming back to the Stadium to play a Red Sox team who has to play 2 last place teams this week and has Monday off to rest!!!!!
Pay-back's a tough cookie to swallow.....isn't it?
why is it that if a coach goes for the touchdown instead of the feild goal and his team loses by two points the coach gets the blame. but in baseball you lose by one run you have two on and no outs the manager does not bunt to move the runners over. a double play occurs because the manager does not decise to play small ball. the next play is an out. you dont score. i cant count the amount of times this manager has not exercised good judgement. joe torre falls asleep at the wheel. he leaves huges in the game too long. and huges era goes up because vizcaino. i would have traded vicaino instead of procter. at least procter has good stuff. i still dont see what the heck this team sees in viscaino. the guy just does not have.you know people praise torre. but i tell you he under acheived winning just four titles with all the talent he had. the jeter era should be approaching 8 or 9 world series championships. and cashman. i tell you what in a pennant race theo epstein would not be saying use jobba chamberlain every other day.that game would have been won after the a-rod homerun last night oif chamberlain had been used. it just shows how dumb cashman is. like i said before torre is giving too many games away. you can throw cashman in there as well. why be surprised look at how cashman has done throwing money away on players !

Stayed watching stoically till the very bitter end. Did you guys notice that every run the Yanks gave up was on a pitch up anf in the middle? That is why even the rookie hit it hard in the 10th. Torre ruined a potentially good inning by ordering hit and run with slow Philips runnig from 1st and Melky at the plate at 3:2 count not even swinging at the inside pitch. Double play.
Tonight Moose is most probably going to screw up again and how are our guys going to handle Escobar is a big ? mark...
underpressure: I agree with one aspect of your comment. First and Second, nobody out Cano at the plate, I'm looking for the bunt but Joe ellects to go for the knockout punch. It played out wrong, this time. They were making very good contact against Mosley, so Joe's thinking Cano will at worst move them along.
The killer was the hanging curve to the catcher for a bases clearing double. We get any other outcome its our ball game.
I was under the impression that Hughes was 93+ fastball. His fastball is not a plus fastball at 91.
Cali Time,
You know soon enough we are going to be asking you how your foot tastes in your mouth.
I hate the Angels, maybe even more than the Red Sox. We just can't beat them and now scrubs hitting less than .100 can put on Angel uniforms and somehow beat us.
Call me crazy (and I've been called worse) but isn't this too big a stretch to be babying Joba?
I mean this stretch of games is kinda sorta important, especially with the Mariners playing well and my boys playing tomato cans.
The whole "Let's treat Joba like a Fabrege egg" seemed silly last night. Who would you rather see in a clutch situation? Joba or Sean Henn?
I notice the Yankees always seem to lose late in games when they play the Angels in Los Angeles. This is nothing new. Jet lag? Time difference? I don't know but seems to hold true every time.
No one complained about how good Angels were when we beat them 2-1 last time we played at Yankees Stadium.
Angels are having a fantastic year and beating just about everybody -- even the Red Sox. The Yankees played just as good as them last night but lost in a walk off hit off of Sean Henn, the very last reliever we would put into a game. Rookie Newbie Hughes pitched very well against the 2nd best team in all MLB.
Let's put this whole Angel killing thing in proper perspective. Angels having a 60-54 record over the Yankees in 11 years is not that impressive. We are better than 28 other teams and I'd take that any day if it means the Angels are the ONLY team who has a six-game winning record against us over 11 years (that's a very long time). Some years we are better than the Angels, some years they are better than us. It's just life in the big baseball cities known as New York and Los Angeles. No big deal.
At least Joba got a day off. Remember: priorities.
The Angels may have been on the East Coast, but anyone who travels often knows it's harder at night to go from East Coast to West Coast and harder in the morning to go from West Coast to East Coast. Fortunately for the team traveling from the West, they can sleep in most days when they are in the East. It's hard to make the body adjust to staying up that late for such a short period, case closed.
Solid outing by Huges, but I was disappointed to see him enter the 7th. I know his pitch count was low, but I was actually looking to see the same formula we used on Saturday (Farnsworth 7th, Viz 8th, Mariano 9th). I guess that didn't work out.
I don't like the math of pitching the young guys one day and the old another though. I would've rather see Edwar out there last night, but knew he couldn't pitch because of two innings the day before.
As someone who just went from the West Coast to the East Coast and back again, it is MUCH easier going West to East than vice versa
Just saying
It wasn't jet lag... it was trusting the late innings to Sean Henn
I hate to be the pessimist, but I've lost all faith in Mussina. He should be a #5 in the weak NL central, not for the Yanks fighting for a playoff spot down the stretch. I can't see how we could possibly win this.
Sully, every Yankee fan knows that Torre blows arms out in the pen. THe rules for Joba are way too strict as a result of it, but the line had to be drawn somewhere. This guy would be out there every night until his knuckles were rubbing against the ground if his use was left to JT's discretion..
Oh God, then Lackey on Wednesday....
It was a tough extra inning loss on the road to the team with the best home record ...
The Yankees will bounce back.
Oh no, Lackey is pitching ... well some games you write off ... Lackey, Bedard, games Igawa pitches ... games like those ...
It doesnt matter. They are getting paid several million to be able to go cross country and still have the ability to win ballgames. If the Yankees had gotten blown out then maybe the tired argument would have more credibility. But it was a close game that anyone could have won, so i dont see why making excuses for the Yankees performance is a good idea. They played just as well as the Angels did, and maybe could have taken advantage of a few situations, but the Angels could have taken advantage of situations of their own and blown out the Yankees. Thats baseball.
It wasnt jet lag, it wasn't the schedule. It was the fact that Viz is tired and Henn sucks!
Bob: your explanation is the most credibile of the lot about the loss. They played a little better or got a performance from some player(s) that the Yankees didn't get. The only advantage the Angels had last night over the yankees was sleeping in their own bed.
How many other sports teams in any sport were playing last night at 2 am? None is a safe guess. Angels are selfish with all late night games. Who can stay awake til 1 am, 2 am here on east coast? They never schedule afternoon games at their stadium, just late night games. Yankees fans deserve to watch their team play, not fall asleep after one or two hours. West coast trips stink for that reason, Angels stink for that reason. Even Mariners have early games sometimes.
It is obvious that Chamberlain is going to have to pitch consecutive days, if the Yanks are going to make the playoffs. If Chamberlain pitches the 7th and 8th innings as Mo did once upon a time, we win last night. In an extra inning game against a playoff team, you can't expect to win with both Chamberlain and Ramirez unavailable out of the "pen". Farns pitching in a tie game in the 8th, is the result of this bullpen shortage. If the Yanks really want to make the playoffs, Chamberlain is gonna have to be allowed to pitch consecutive days. It's that simple.
"Quote from Spy and Fat Bastard Molina"
http://www.newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-spynotes215340301aug21,0,3271191.story
"It's been awesome, good people here, I'm loving it," Molina said. "It was strange coming into Anaheim. But I've got to just change the page and move on."
Molina said he realized his perceptions of the Yankees as an outsider were misconceptions. He saw the array of big-name players and wondered if it might be more of an "every man for himself" place.
"I thought there were a lot of superstars, and they were probably not selfish but looking out for themselves," Molina said. "I got inside, and I just eat my words. You have to be inside to know these guys and know how much they have helped me since I came over here."
Of Course Molina so happy right now that He's with Yankees, so He could give away secrets to Mike Scioscia and Angels Organization. He's spy. Angels won last night, Molina probably smirking behind in the dugout.
Anonymous,
You are nuttier than a fruitcake. Please take your meds before you post here.
Dog,
I'm really sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. That's just plain awful.
My sympathies to you and your family.
The Yanks didn't lose because of jet lag! Com'on guys.
The didn't execute and the pitchers kept pitching from behind in the count,
CONSTANTLY!
The play that some of you were talking about with melky and Phillips looked like a missed hit-and-run as melky took strike 3. You have to swing the bat and put the ball in play. Phillips was a dead duck and you can tell that it was suppose to be a hit-and-run by the way Phillips was running to second.
On almost every Angel hitter we were behind in the count. Guess what? They're sitting on FAT 2-0 fastballs. (See Howie Kendrick's at-bats).
I don't know what it is with some of you on the blog as to why you love Sean Henn. I don't see it.
Sorry.
He $ucks, plain and simple.
Forget about Chamberlain pitching on consecutive days. It ain't gonna happen, nor should it happen.
The pen has been better as of late and the guys that Torre called on last night have been doing the job. Vizcaino had a .118 BA against since, what? May? He made some bad pitches.
Happens.
Farnsworth has been better in his last 4 appearances and he got into trouble last night by, yes you guessed it, getting behind in the count.
THANK GOD FOR WILSON BETEMIT!
Mo did OK. Not great, but OK.
Henn blows!!!!!!
The Yanks took too many good pitches to hit and swung at some really bad stuff. (See Bobby Abreu's at-bat in the 9th).
Moose tonight. Not too optimistic, but stranger things have happened.
As I said yesterday: 5 out of 7 on this trip.
Tough game to lose, but enough of the jet lag talk. Yanks lost because in that big three run inning, Cano does not come up with Vlads grounder, then hughes walks the following two hitters. Later on, another Angel that drew a walk scored.
Throw strikes and maybe it doesn't go beyond 9 innings.
My sentiments exactly Cro.
The secret to beating the Angels?
KEEP THEM OFF THE BASES!!!!!!
Ya gotta love how the angels play....so relentless.
Moose better be on his game tonight!
Become educated first, speak later:
Jet Lag: Symptoms
The feelings of disorientation encountered as a result of crossing time zones are known as jet lag. Symptoms include fatigue and general tiredness, inability to sleep at night, loss of concentration, loss of drive, headaches and general malaise. Jet-lag occurs when biological rhythms are disrupted as a result of rapid transitions across multiple time-zones. Such desynchronization of rhythms also occurs in nocturnal shift work employees who transfer to night shifts.
A classical rhythm is represented by a sine wave, fluctuations occurring cyclically about a mean value rising to a peak and half a cycle later dropping to a trough. Twenty-four hour rhythms are known as circadian (about a day). An example of a biological rhythm is core temperature. We can find the characteristics of rhythms using the mathematical technique of cosinor analysis to determine the mean, the peak, the amplitude, and the time the peak occurs (the acrophase).
Circadian Desynchronization
Following a journey across multiple time zones the body's rhythms at first retain the characteristics of their point of departure. However, the new environment forces new influences on these cycles, the main factors being the time of sunrise and onset of darkness. The body attempts to adjust to this new context but core temperature is relatively sluggish in doing so. As a rough guide it takes about one day for each time zone crossed for body temperature to adapt completely. The individual may have difficulty in sleeping for a few days, but activity and social contact during the day help in accelerating the adaptations of the arousal rhythm. Thus arousal adjusts more quickly than does body temperature to the new time zone. Until the whole spectrum of biological rhythms adjusts to the new local time, the performance of exercise may be below par.
Allowing for individual differences, the severity of jet lag is affected by a variety of factors. In general, the greater the number of time zones crossed, the more difficult it is to cope. A 2-hour phase shift may have marginal significance but a 3-hour shift (e.g. British or Irish teams traveling to play European football matches in Russia or Turkey or a Californian sports team traveling to play on the east coast of the US) will entail desynchronization to a substantial degree. In such cases the flight times time of departure and time of arrival - may determine the severity of symptoms.
The severity of symptoms may be worse 2-3 days after arrival than on the day immediately following disembarkation. Symptoms then gradually abate, but can still be acute at particular times of day. There will be a window of time during the day when the period of high arousal associated with the time zone just left overlaps with the arousal high point at the new local time. This window may be predicted in advance and should be utilized for timing of training practices in the first few days at destination. Our observations on footballers traveling from Britain to the South Pacific indicate that morning training sessions suit players best over the first few days. Such a practice has also proved successful for cross-country runners.
The direction of travel affects the severity of jet lag. It is easier to cope with flying in a westward direction compared to flying eastward.
?????
...and, on that note....I guess time to get to work.
Chamberlain and Ramirez should be available tonight if need.
Let's just hope that Moose gives us a solid 7.
Keep those Rosaries handy!
I will!
Without gettting into how many pitches Chamberlain threw while warming up in the bullpen Sun., he threw 9 "game" pitches. There is no reason after throwing only 9 pitches in the game the previous day, he can't pitch the following day. If you guys are content with Chamberalin not pitching consecutive days, then you must also be content with the Yankees not making the playoffs. It's that simple.
He's not going to pitch everyday now so forget it.
This kid jumped 3 levels of pro ball in one season. They aren't going to mess with him now.
Okay, so Torre "breaks the Joba rules" and pitched Chamberlain on consecutive days. His reasoning is the same as Roy's: he only threw 9 "game" pitches the day before.
He gets in the game yesterday and throws 9 more "game" pitches.
Hey, let's use him 3 days in a row now. He only threw 18 "game" pitches in 2 consecutive days.
Now there's a vicious cycle to use this kid all of the time to win "now".
It's always about "now" with you guys.
If they make it to the playoff, then the "rules" change.
Chamberlain is a luxury. The other guys in the pen have to do the job.
The secret to beating the Halos is keeping Michael "Motormouth" Kay's mouth shut! Kay is absolutely a JINX! "Oh, the Angels have the Yankees number....The Yankees better watch out, they have not been able to beat this team....The Yankees are close to being out of this thing....Michael "The Mouth" Kay should be working for the Angels. He obviously admires his boy Sciosca and is extremely excited when they come through against our boys. Will Yankee management pay attention and put this phony out of his misery? Kay is one of the worst announcers I have ever had the misfortune to listen to. I muted the TV after the 6th inning (then Posada came through with the hammer). You're a JINX,JINX,JINX...(where is Kitty when you need 'em...oh yeah, he got tired of Mouth Not-O-Kay too!)
Mike,
I guess that you don't like the guy.
Seriously, I didn't hear the YES broadcast last night because the baseball package that I have used the Angels' announcers. You want to complain about a guy Mike?
Try listening to Rex "The Wonderdog" Hudler!
But, let's face it; Kay is right in saying that the Mousketeers have our number.
We've played them 7 times so far this year and they've taken 5 of them.
They've knocked us out of the playoffs twice.
Since Torre has managed, they've had a winning record against us.
What's to complain about?
Facts are facts, Mike.
But repeating the facts over and over and over...we GET it, okay? What about throwing out some ideas on how the Yanks can change this around, instead of beating us over the head with the obvious. The guy is HORRIBLE! And a jinx!
Unless we were gonna throw Joba in the 7th and break his sacred rules and then mo in the eight AND ninth than we have nothing to argue.
YOu're not gonna throw chamberlain in the 7th and 8th with him having pitched the night before so that would leave Mo for two but the way Mo's been I'm not sure that would get it done.
We lost that game on Hughes inability throw strikes.
This Joba talk is nonsense. He's not gonna throw 2 innings last night so it's a non issue.
If it was the playoffs maybe but it's a catch 22 yeah maybe we miss the playoffs because he doesn't pitch 2 last night.
Pick your poison nomsayin...
PS.
WE DEFINETLY LOSE TONIGHT. Mussina is out of the game in 5th!!
Escobar holds us to 4 hits over 7 K-Rod gets another save and celebrates like a wild animal I HATE THAT GUY!!
John,
Thank you for your concern. How is your dog doing?
Chamberlain is not a "luxury", he is 1 of 25 players, and "everybody" has to "pull their weight", (pun intended). Come Sept, when the rosters expand, you "might" consider him a luxury. As long as the Yanks are restricted to 25 players, and continue to play with only 24 players the day after Chamberlain pitches, he is certainly not a luxury. The "restrictions" pertaining to "days off" concerning Chamberlain, are greater than those imposed on the 12 and 13 yr. old Little Leaguers we currently see at Williamsport.
Roy
Unless you wanted him to pitch the 7th and 8th it would moot..
Not even you would've proposed he pitch the 7th and 8th right?
"ROY", why would you want a chance in overexposing Joba and "risking" the chance he may "injure" himself? He has been throwing since the Hawaian League earlier this year-If the Yanks are relying on Joba to win the pennant they are in trouble anyways! We should of gotten Gagne right?
Mike from Jersey...wasn't the game on ESPN (it was on here in Virginia Beach)? Why didn't you just change the channel.
With the baseball package, it's hit and miss. Sometimes we get YES announcers and other times we get the "other teams" network/announcers. I can say for certain, though, that there is no worse combination than Sterling and Waldman, so if I am able to pick up the game on AM radio, it's so painful to listen.
John G...do you really think Moose could give us 7 solid? Has he done that at all for us this year? bats need to be alive tonight!
Mike,
I can't argue with what you're saying. You're right in that we don't need Kay to beat it over our collective heads. We get it, Kay. The Mousketeers have our number.
How about providing some insight on how the yanks can rectify this situation.
Phucker,
Thank you for agreeing with me on Joba. What inning do you bring him in?
The 7th when we're up 4-3?
Who pitches the 8th? Farnsworth?
Vizcaino?
Henn?
Who?
Dog,
I'm really sorry about what you and your family are going through. I'll keep you guys in my prayers, Bro.
The dog is doing better, at least I think so.
last week he was dragging his hind legs. Now he takes about 10 to 12 steps on them and trys to run. The meds seem to be working. My wife told the vet that the operation will cost 10 to 15,000 and she was shocked. She gave us numbers for a few other hospitals to call and also told us to keep the dog under strict confinement for 4 to 6 weeks. He only 'walks" when we take him out to the dog run to take care of business.
In the meantime due to his confinement in the dog crate, we temporarily changed his name from Bogey to 11276548.
In fact, the other night, he emptied his water dish, grabbed it in his mouth and was scrapping the bars of his cage.
I guess that he didn't like the food.
John G and Bossrots
I CAN NOT give you 7 solid.
Trust me.
I'll be lucky to get out of the 5th.
My advice...
Pray for rain.
Phucker-
Cocerning Hughes and his "wildness" last night. I thought Torre put him behind the 8 ball in the 7th inning when he called for a pitchout with a runner on first. The kid is already in the "pressure cooker", knows he is having trouble throwing strikes, has a runner at 1st, and Torre immediately puts him behind in the count 1-0 with that pitchout. If the Angels wanna risk getting the tieing run thrown out at 2nd attempting to steal, let em take that risk. The inning completely fell apart for Hughes after that pitchout. Torre should have given the Angels the opportunity to attempt a "risky" move, not put his rookie pitcher in an very tough situation. In other words, make the other team beat you, don't beat yourself.
Roy,
As I said when would you have brought him into the game?
"Moose PTRS"
LMAO!!!
Good One, Man!
If your referring to Chamberlain, absolutely.
7TH inning after the leadoff man got on.
"Moose PTRS"
I've got bad news for you, "Moose".
It's not the rainy season out there at this time of year.
You're stuck.
You'd better get your a$$ out there and give us 7!
SOLID!!!
Thanks for confirming that, Moose. I suspected that was the case. Just reach back into your 1999 arsenal and give us 5 solid or 6 mediocre.
Let us not forget that the September schedule is relatively weak, and Cleve/Det/Minn still play each other quite a few times. And Seattle still plays California 7 times. If we win one at the Big A (or Big V as i call it since it's a voodoo palace) and split in Detroit, we won't get hurt. Is there anyone out there, besides Roy, who thinks we're going 37-0 the rest of the way. We can probably lose 12 or 13 and still make the playoffs, and those losses have to come from somewhere. May as well be the Big V and some of the other nightmare places.
Dr. Smith mentions Michael kay
http://www.candleinthedark.com/informal.html
FALLACY OF THE PREDETERMINED OUTCOME
This is a current favorite of mine, and I learned it from Michael Kay, a talented and intelligent sports announcer for the New York Yankees. Go Yankees!
Kay often runs into fans who say something akin to: "If only player x had gotten on base, then player y's home run right after x's at bat would have won the game."
Kay counters that we cannot assume player y would have hit the homerun in this hypothetical situation, because we have changed what led up to y's homerun so that all future outcomes are now in doubt - i.e. the playing field is literally changed. For specific examples, Kay would point out that after walking player x, the opposing pitcher might have been substituted, or that player y may have become more anxious knowing that the game was now on the line and struck out. In fact, aliens from outer space, who had placed wagers on the Yankee's opponents, may have chosen that instant to attack and annihilate Yankee stadium. There is simply no way to know for certain what would happen next. Whatever the specifics, we can never assume that an outcome would be exactly the same as it is now, if we were to hypothetically go back and change variables that led up to the outcome. The flaw in the assumption here is that the arguer is assuming that he can keep whatever outcomes that please him, while denying those that do not, when in fact all variables in outcomes are connected and can never be separated.
Boss,
I'm hoping Moose pitches a game like he did when Oakland came into town the last time.
He gave us a solid 7 and we won 2-1.
Roy,
Torre will only bring him in to start innings so that one is out.
But let's say that he did. Chamberlain gets into the game in the 7th. He gets us out of the inning still up 4-3.
Who comes in for the 8th?
Here are your choices based on who was available last night:
Vizcaino
Farnsworth
Mo
Henn.
And let's face it:
This Chamberlain issue is only an issue because Vizcaino couldn't get the job done last night.
To me, it didn't matter who pitched (other than Chamberlain) because none of them threw strikes and got behind in the count.
That game was a loss waiting to happen in my opinion.
Vizcaino starts the 8th with the bases empty, unlike the 7th with men on.
The Yanks had the lead in the 7th. That is not a "loss waiting to happen". That is a game the Yanks should win.
John G,
I honestly don't remember that A's game. Maybe he has another good one in him. It's just so painful to watch him nibble and pick. Just throw the freakin' ball!
That said, I don't understand the debate on Chamberlain. It's not Torre's decision...he's been given his marching orders on the kid. Unless that dugout phone goes directly to Cashman's cell phone, no way Joba comes in yesterday. I don't know why the same guys that call for Joe's head because of his bullpen overuse are the same one's arguing for the overuse of a 21 year old. But I guess those are the same individuals who believe finishing the season 101-61 is 20 games over .500. We need to manage expectations in the realm of reality and not the theater of the absurd!
That means then we don't trust Vizcaino to get the big out when we need it.
Vizcaino should have been able to get the job done last night. I heard that he begged out of pitching on Sunday because he was tired. I think that he still is which is why his pitches were up and he was pitching from behind in the count.
He could have given up the lead in the 8th.
We could probably go back and forth on this all day Roy.
If it's any consolation, I'm frustrated with the "Joba Rules" as you are and probably most of the guys here are.
But as i said before, the other guys in the pen have to get the job done.
What I meant by a "loss waiting to happen" was because none of our pitchers were ahead in the count all night. They all kept falling behind and then had to throw them over the plate. How many times did Kendrick score last night? He batted 8th last night.
What about Figgins? Didn't we have him 1-2 in one at-bat last night and he worked a walk?
Wasn't he ahead in the count in the at-bat where he got the big hit?
The Yanks didn't make the big pitch when they needed it.
The Angels did. In the inning when A-Rod homered we had 1st and 2nd with nobody out. A big inning waiting to happen.
So what happens?
A DP then they get out of the inning.
How many of those did we have against them last night?
I agree with you Roy.
That game was winnable.
But NOT because of Chamberlain getting into the game.
Vizcaino should have been able to get out of the 7th.
As far as jet lag goes, the Angels just finished an east coast trip ending in Boston Sunday. So, they should have been feeling the "lag" as well.
Scoscia just always out manages JT, plain and simple.
I can't believe people are using Jet Lag as an excuse
Please.
It was an extra inning game where they had to use Vizcaino, Farnsworth and Henn in clutch situations.
Gee... I wonder if that formula was more relevant to the loss than not getting enough sleep on the flight
Rick,
The Angels were flying back home to their normal comfort level, according to their natural inner clock. It's a relief rather than an unnatural adjustment. Inner clocks are set according to the time zone you live in normally. You can't compare the two.
Sully,
Read about the usual effects of jet lag. There is no way you could say it didn't affect them, but you could say it probably did to some degree based on the natural human condition.
Maybe if the Yankees were napping on the field you would believe that jet lag exists. It's a fact that it exists, it's not an excuse. Whatever the outcome is of the game, it stands, that's it. It doesn't matter, does it? But don't deny jet lag doesn't exist. That makes no sense, it's just an excuse for some of you to say the Yankees really stink.
Anon, if it were a 15-0 blow out, I might smirk and let it slide.
But no. It was a close game, and they didn't lose because Sean Henn was yawning on the mound.
Also the Angels just flew in from Boston. Are they immune.
PUH-LEASE!
It was a loss!
It was a loss against a team that very well might win the World Series.
How about tipping your cap and stopping this Jet Lag NONSENSE!?
Sully,
PUH-LEASE! get a grip on reality, buddy. Go back to school and learn something about the human body. It's a fact jet lag exists. Whether or not the Yankees won or lost due to it can't be proven. But it exists even if you can't come to terms with that reality. It's a theory that's all. Get a grip on yourself. Don't want you to have a heart attack which you probably don't believe exists either.
And what the hell does a 15-0 blow out have to do with anything? The Yankees made errors and played poorly where they should have been more alert and made some plays. Those are signs of jet lag. Read the post about the signs and symptoms of jet lag. Can it be proven? No. Is it possible? Yes, of course, and that was the only point--no excuses, just a thought. Calm down, Mr. Red Sox fan.
How about this for a thought?
The Angels played better. They are a good team. They are the team I think and many other people think are going to win the World Series... God Forbid anyone tip their hat to them and say "A good team one tonight."
I know Jet Lag exists. I live in California and I fly back and forth to the East Coast all the time... I am aware it exists. I also know you can sleep on the plane and the hotel.
People have been going from East to West playing Major league since 1958 and this is the first loss I am hearing being lumped in with not putting some blinders on during the flight.
Didn't the Angels just fly from Boston? Why did they win?
No one said the Angels aren't a good team, did they? The Angels were flying back to their normal time zone. Sleep doesn't help when your body isn't tired, if it starts getting tired at 12 or 1 pm. You can't force yourself to sleep in the afternoon or on the plane if you're not tired. I couldn't stay awake last night for the game, my body doesn't stay awake because I tell it to. Yankees looked sluggish after a while, when the game was getting late. This takes nothing away from the Angels who are an excellent team, but the Yankees are excellent also. The Angels numbers aren't much better than the Yankees who started the season in a huge slump and had to make up a ton of ground. Don't take this personally, Sully because it sounds like you are.
SULLY,
WHY DON'T YOU GO TO THE ANGELS SITE AND TIP YOUR CAP TO THEM. IT MIGHT WORK BETTER THAN TIPPING YOUR CAP TO THE ANGELS ON A YANKEES SITE THE DAY AFTER THE YANKEES LOST TO THEM BY SUCH A CLOSE GAME.
I'm not taking it personally. I think it is hilarious that Jet Lag is even being brought up as if these aren't professionals who have been making East Coast/West Coast trips their whole career.
But you are right... the fact that the Yankees couldn't figure out a time to sleep (especially when they GAIN 3 hours!) was a real factor last night.
(Cuckoo clock sound effect)
Anon I got news for you...
THE YANKEES SITE IS GONNA REALLY BE VOLATILE TERRITORY FOR ANY ANGEL CAP TIPPING TOMORROW CAUSE WE'RE GONNA LOSE AGAIN.
HOW YA LIKE DEM APPLES
LIKE I SAID...
I'M A TERRIBLE PITCHER
PRAY FOR RAIN.
Jet Lag...
LMFAO
We lost last night because our pitchers were pitching from behind all night long and had to come in with a few giving the Mousketeers good pitches to hit.
We lost last night because we didn't get the big out often enough.
We lost last night because the bottom of the Mousketeer order got on base a ton and drove in 5 of their 7 runs.
I don't think that Posada, matsui and A-Rod had jet lag.
Sully,
Now you're really sounding foolish. The YES announcers always have conversations about jet lag when the team flies out west. I remember they asked Reggie Jackson and some other retired Yankees about it and they say it's hard playing those late games because fatigue is sometimes a factor especially in extra innings. They used to be able to take amphetamines, it was allowed not too long ago, but they can't anymore. There was a big complaint among players when amphetamines were no longer allowed after the big steroid scandal. The uppers helped players stay awake when traveling. Just a fact. Just saying.
Jet lag?
LMFAO!!!
Moose,
As I told you earlier, it doesn't rain in SoCal at this time of year.
Looks like you have to go out and do your job tonight.
Remember: 7 solid, leave with the lead.
So when are you flying out to pitch Phucker? :-)
Take some Red Bull or down some Jolt and get out there.
Anon, I know it is a terrible thing to say "Hey, a team beat us" but it happens from time to time.
But yeah, this is actually the first time Jeter, Posada, Farnsworth or ANYONE on the team have gone to the West Coast.
I hate the angels.
I hope I'm wrong and the "Jet lag" somehow affects the Angels bats tonight instead of last night.
*knocking on wood*
LOL, I didn't realize there was no many misinformed people in the world. Some things are common knowledge, some things are common sense -- yeah, jet lag exists and affects athletes (all athletes in all sports). Imagine that? LOL, LOL. What a revelation ROFLMFAO. Ya learn sumthin noo evry day, dontcha?
Dude you're in serious denial.
Sully,
Earth calling Sully.
A good team beat us. Gee, now that took a lot of brain power.
Now that I stated the most obvious fact in the world, I will tell you again that athletes in ALL SPORTS suffer from jet lag and it CAN, it's POSSIBLE that it can affect their play. Got it? Need it said a hundred other ways before you understand the same point several people are trying to get across to you?
Enough with the jet lag already. Will people start posting about California water vs. New York water?
The Yanks f*cking lost; whether they were too tired or not, who really gives a sh*t? A loss is a loss.
Let's talk about Mussina and, based on his performance tonight, would that warrant a call up of Kennedy?
Cro,
Kennedy will probably be called up when the rosters expand in Sept.
There's no place to put him now.
I wonder if Giambi will be playing tonight. He hits Escobar well so maybe he'll get the call at 1st with Damon DHing.
We may have to sacrifice a little infield D for a better stick.
A loss is a loss is right. People come here thinking about why the Yankees could have screwed up the last game and you have to be sure to say the Yankees are just plain terrible, otherwise you get bombed with criticism for having a more precise view of what could be wrong with the team. It's funny that the Red Sox fan is crying the loudest when a Yankees fan suggests that playing on the west coast is a nightmare for reasons other than playing a good team.
That's right! Because I'm a Red Sox fan I must be wrong about saying the Yankees lost because their bullpen was understaffed instead of the team getting some z's.
Anon, I am NOT saying the Yankees are plain terrible.
If you read stuff I have written, I think they are going to win the Wild Card and be a force to be reckoned with in the post season.
Teams lose games once in a while and it isn't because Molina is a spy and the team forgot how to sleep.
Sully,
Again you're missing the point. I give up and won't bother providing a ton of supporting material for a common sporting malaise. Let's just forget it, okay? You win, okay? Does that make you feel better?
Crosetti, you speak wisdom
A team with championship ambitions should learn to take a nap

The more you beat this drum the more you come off like a homer who has absolutely ZERO objectivity.
I'll even grant you that it's possible that going on the road probably does affect a players performance to some degree why else would teams have worse records away from home?
And yeah, among the many disadvantages of being on the I'm sure to some small degree, "rest" can be disrupted and "JETLAG" could be a contributor...But you sound like Jet Lag is the sole reason we lost last night.
I just think you're making it out to be grossly more important than it is IMO.
We lost cause Hughes walked way too many dudes and hung a curveball.
..And because Joba Chamberlain is not Scott Proctor who Torre can throw out there until his arm looks like a pile of silly puddy.
If the Moose gets spanked tonight, it will be hard for Yank
