The Yankees try for a sweep today, after outscoring the White Sox 24-4 in the first two games. Wilson Betemit is getting his first start as a Yankee, as Derek Jeter gets a rare day off. The Yankees are now only two games out in the wild card, the closest they've been in months.

That's what Wilson Betemit allows you to do that Miguel Cairo doesn't.
Will Betemit ever be mistaken for Jeter - no - but you feel more comfortable putting his bat in the lineup than Cairo's - I'm a little shocked that Posada is in there (day game after night game) but given his hitting how can you take that bat out.
Look at that White Sox lineup!
Is this a split squad spring training game?
I know we have a log jam now with the Betemit signing, but does Joe ever think about DH'ing Posada every once in a while? That's almost like a day off.
I like the way Melky swings the bat, but I repeat, he should not be at the top of the order. Top of the order guys need to be OBP guys and take pitches, and he simply does not do this.
Sully,
Only two changes from last night - getting the rookie Fields out of there against Clemens and Erstad instead of Podsednick
Still a bunch of palookas.
Looks like a sweep today
Hopefully Wakefield's knuckler will knuckle
Sully: With the White Sox luck, he'll throw a knuckleball, hit a batter and get tossed (those that watched last night's game know what I'm referring to).
I'm VERY surprised that Molina isn't starting today. Posada, day game after a night game just isn't right. Wasn't the reason for getting Molina so that there would be comfort over resting Posada?
The real benefit of having Philips, Cairo and Betemit is how well the combination compliments pinch hitters like Giambi or Duncan or (fill in the non-starter of the day). These guys are versatile enough to play multiple positions, so we have plenty of coverage if a pinch hitter is elected.
Arod, keeping the streak alive...
Keep in mind that Cairo NEVER strikes out and is more than average at most infield positions. If the Yanks need someone to come into the game to move a runner over there is just about nobody else on the team I'd want up there but Cairo, he has excellent bat control. Obviously he has shortcomings:
1. No power
2. Not great speed
3. Looks like Shrek
4. Is getting older
but the guy does have some value.
Come on Roger, knock this crap off.
Looks like we're going to need the bats today boys.
And the Indians are winning.
Well, a loss today isn't the WORST thing (not that I'm conceding a loss) if the Yankees keep taking 2 of 3 in every series, I'm okay with that.
Why can't we ever finish teams off with a sweep?
Every time seemingly we have a chance to step on a team's throat, we don't get it done.
And what a PATHETIC effory by Clemens. 9 runs and 8 hits in a inning?
Let's go, offense!!!
Betemit is a better overall player but I do love Cairo. I always have.
He's so fundamentally sound, plays excellent D at any infield position and like Jim said never strikes out and always moves the runners.
He reminds me of the beloved Louis Sojo a little, except without all the clutch World Series hits.
Way to lead by example Roger. let's hope Hughes isn't copying you too much.
They're still looking for survivors under that bridge and this guy is showering and on his way to the bank to cash a 6 figure check for a 30 minute batting practice session. great day.
When looking at Betemit vs. Cairo, it really comes down to is the team better off without Proctor. This was a "dump" trade, no more, no less.
Speaking of Shrek, good to see Mike Myers is still collecting a check
I predict the Yankees will win this game.
It will be a 2005 special:
Lousy starting pitching, offense chips away, Rivera throws a scoreless 9th, some Yankee hits a 2 run bomb... and we have to hear Sterling's call on the ESPN replay
I also think we'll win this game.
They'll work Garland, and the bullpen is god awful even when it's not exhausted.
By the way, Posada: 10 for his last 13.
THAT'S HOT!!!
It's true- the Yankees offense gives them a chance to win- it's a little tough though when you use 3 pitchers to get out of the second inning.
Betemit, 3-run HR in his first Yankee at-bat. I'll take it!
I like the new guy.
I'm not watching the game, so I have to know....how can Roger stay in to give up 8 runs? Why didn't he get pulled earlier, like around 5????
Now I have no doubt the Yankees are winning this game.
Talk about getting right back in to the game!
5 of the runs Roger gave up were unearned. Cano made an error. It all just kind of happened.
Damon just struck out... and then blamed Torre
Meanwhile Papi doubles and Manny drives him in. It's too bad those guys are on the decline
Jeez
The Yankees might tie them THIS INNING
I'd say "Ozzie! Warm someone up!" But who the hell would you want to bring in?
The knuckleballer who got kicked out yesterday? haha, that was funny.
You can bet good money, and (I bet Sully knows this from his Boston days): Roger Clemens will come up with some type of injury to blame today's performance on. I'm at work so I'm not watching the game but somewhere around the 4th or 5th run I bet he limped just a little bit or grabbed at his leg in some way.
here comes #500 to tie the game
8-5, this is sweet! Need to get over to the sports bar on my lunch break soon...good thing this game will last a while.
Jim A.:
I didn't catch what they were saying before the game, but they had a reason as to why they weren't expecting Clemens to go deep into the game. Something about him being tired or fatigued. Again, this was during the pre-game, so he had no reason to limp, he already had some sort of built in excuse.
Also, only 3 runs were earned, so luck wasn't on his side.
Finally, Arod got a hit.
perfect time for 500.....
Jeez!
Matsui will homer and the Yanks will win this 17-11
...or, a run scoring single.
Just give us 2 more innings Wakefield...
How can a team score 8 runs and not even be able to hold it for 2/3 of an inning?
Great
Boone Logan
Yeah, he'll help
Doug Mirabelli homered.
You should be fined if you let up a homer to Mirabelli
That's like giving up a homer to the 15th caller on WFAN
Gee, I wonder if Posada will come through
TIE GAME!
WHITE SOX BASEBALL!
CATCH IT!
No seriously... catch it!
OK, back to work for Sully
I'll catch you procrastinators this evening
Well alrighty then, I guess it's going to be one of THOSE games.
i'm like jeff karstens right now. he's actually kind of quality and especially compared to chicago's bp
i'm liking jeff karstens right now. he's actually kind of quality and especially compared to chicago's bp
Karstens will get the win today! The "kids" will be credited for 10 - 15 wins down the stretch for the Yankees and Cashman will have proved a genius. Taste it baby.
O's just tied the Red Sux!
Red Sox at Seattle this weekend. Who are we rooting for?
Seattle! The Red Sox are the stronger team, so we want them to lose any time possible.
Old man Clemens looked GREAT today!
You guys are finished! Even if you get in as the Wildcard.
You'll be "one and done!!!!!!"
Everyone in the Yankee's starting lineup already has at least one hit and it's only the 3rd inning. Incredible. And Jeter and Duncan waiting in the wings.
Beating on bad teams gives us all a sense of false security. I'm afraid we'll all be whist'lin a different tune next week and most of August when we have to go play Detroit, Cleveland, LAA, Seattle, Baltimore (they killed us), Toronto and Boston.
I'd say we'll be back to .500 baseball on Sept 1st!
Gary and the Tigers are going to smoke us! Those we'll be 7 tough games to swallow! Then no rest and Boston comes in to pick the carcus at the end of the month!
They have such a cupcake schedule in August! The BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL is going to run away with it!
OH Jermaine Dye!!! Why???? Why?????? Why?????? It's starting already! Our bullpen is going to be the death of us!
Dye's HR was like the Red Sox just threw salt on our wounds.
Mirabelli always lends a hand to Wake when he's pitching and comes through with a few runs for his battery mate! It's tough having such a GREAT back-up cather when you're the best team in baseball! Looks like they'e going to be the first team to 70 wins. I'd say by the end of August the Sox will be up 14 games at about 90-45. There isn't much competition for them the whole month of August. September looks sweet for them also. A whole month to beat up on the AL EAST! YIKES. they'll probably finished with 115 wins!. What a Powerhouse team with a GREAT pitching staff! And and even stronger bullpen with Gagne!
#1 Yankee Phan:
Quit pretending.
You'll still lose, jerks.
Looks like the Yankess are catching some Chicago White Sox ball right now losing 10-8? Glad Dye stayed to pu the hurt on that one!
Go White Sox! Take one game! Bad emough you blew an 8-0 lead to a team your equal! How embarrashing! Make that bad Yankee bullpen pay the price!!!!
Didn't know there were any ChiSox fans left over from 2005.
That bandwagon stopped a long time ago.
Rocket has failed lift-off today. WHAT A SHELLING!!!! Hughes will most likely hurt himself again this weekend. Pushing someone who should be in AA ball is only going to hurt his development for the future. Mussina has losing record. Pettite just got to 500. Mo didn't look very good on Sunday. Farnsworth is still on the team! I miss Proctor already :(
Red Sux fans once again celebrating more World Series wins in August. These pea brains have a few thousand Championships under their belt. Normal people call this delusional.
red sox fans, we can't wait until the YANKEES kick your red sux butt. we are going to torment you, make you bleed. just wait. that day is coming. your first place standing won't last forever and we will make absolutely sure of that and let you know about it every single chance we get.
Looks like 8 by the end of the day. We're doomed! 10 by Sunday and then 7 with Gary and Detroit. The pain, the pain.
Sox up 7-3 Baltimore being Baltimore. but you already know all about them from last weekend! Right? Oh that's right you almost got swept by a sub par team like yourselves. Don't worry another last place team is coming in this weekend. Do you think you can handle it?
It is 4:02 PM. 28 Years ago this minute we lost Thurman. I hate this day.
Boss,
Did you get the book info? I posted it on the Damon Thread for you.
I hate day games after night games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clemens stunk today, but at least the "Boys" are still swinging the bats.
Boston won so we may lose a game there. Cleveland won also, but if we're 3 games out at the end of this game, I can live with that.
I gotta live with that cause the alternative is a dirt nap!
Ant Man,
You're the best, Bro!
Jim A,
I HATE this day also!
It felt like losing a family member or a close friend.
SUCKS!
Hey look, Worthless came in and gave up a run in the eighth. Who is he going to blame this on?
Or a better question, when will Joe finally start using someone else in the eighth in close games?
Gagne came in and gave up a run in the 9th after two doubles. Maybe he'll turn into another Farnsworth.
