« Yankees lineup for night game after morning game | Main | Hughes getting rocked »

Jeter's out

Derek Jeter's not playing today. He hurt his knee in Anaheim trying to get out of the box, and first admitted something was bothering him Friday. Last night, Joe Torre told Derek he thought a day off was in order. Derek didn't argue, which is a sign it must be hurting pretty badly. So he's day-to-day.

Here's the lineup:

Yankees
Damon DH
Cabrera CF
Abreu RF
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Giambi 1B
Cano 2B
Betemit SS
Molina C

Hughes P

Tigers
Granderson CF
Polanco 2B
Thames DH
Ordonez RF
Guillen SS
Rodriguez C
Casey 1B
Inge 3B
Maybin LF

Jurrjens P

Jeter, and Posada out of the lineup, and Giambi playing 1B. Obviously, not our A team either offensively or defensively. Maybe Hughes will pick the team up with a "gem". We certainly need it today.

Hughes=bust.

This is a lump of coal, not a "gem".

GIAMBINO!!!!

Some people make a lot of noise about "Manny being Manny" regarding his defense....but I'll take him over Matsui any day....that guy is hideous in the field.

Yankees should've traded Hughes when they had the chance. His value is getting lower and lower.

Joba is the real deal. Hughes is a bum.

Here we go. I knew it was coming. Another idiot Hughes basher...

Most every elite pitching prospect goes through this phase...it's called...

"The hitters are getting used to seeing me and now I have to adjust."

Justin Verlander
Cole Hamels
Tim Lincecum
Yovani Gillardo
Matt Garza
Danny Haren
Matt Cain
Brandon Webb
Felix Hernandez

Just to name a few, have either been through it or going through it.

It's part of the game. I'm sure that Joba will have face a time where hitters are starting to catch up to his fastball and recognize his tendencies.

Clay Bucholz will too.

CANOOOO!!!! COMEBACK TIME!!

Chuckie

Lincecum had no such phase. And few "so/so" starts he did have he had the leagues worst run support behind him.

Hughes doesn't have the "stuff" to get by on two pitches.

He's got throw in the middle nineties to do that IMO.

After his first career month in the big leagues, Lincecum's ERA was 3.24.

12 ER's in 5 starts.

After his second career month his ERA was 5.19.

22 ER's in 5 starts.

Including a stretch of four starts between June 3-19.

June 3 @Phi 7 hits, 6 ER

June 8 @Oak 4 hits, 3 ER, 5 walks

June 13 Tor 7 hits, 7 ER, 4 walks

June 19 @ Mil 5 hits, 6 ER, 4 walks

By the way, in those four games SF scored 17 runs.

Every pitcher goes through an adjustment period, for some pitchers it's 4 games, for others, it's years.

I am sure Hughes will be fine , I believe mastering another pitch , this offseason , will help. It's too early to call him a bust or lump of charcoal.

Ace pitchers usually don't start their careers off as Worldbeaters.

The trio of Glavine, Maddux and Smoltz all started as big losers and Randy Johnson had no control.

They are all going to the Hall of Fame. (OK, maybe Smoltz will be a stretch, but I'd vote for him!)

Hughes will be a solid pitcher. He's already shown a lot of talent.

You can't expect him to come out and be Tom Seaver right out of the gate!

Lump of coal not charcoal...my bad. Btw, Matsui isn't that great of a defender but he truly has it over Manny...that isn't even debateable(sp?).

Sully is correct! RJ was wild as a mofo when he started and look how great a career he had...plus Maddox! Both were traded and I am sure the teams that traded them regretted it.

Hughes will be okay. That Granderson HR was just a fly ball that matsui misplayed.

Farnsy with a scoreless inning! I worry more about Farnsworth than I do about Hughes.

Why can't farnsworth pitch two innings in a row?

How F$%ked are we!!

Mussina v. Verlander!!!

WE REALLY NEEDED TO WIN TODAY!!

Yankees last 4 series against THE BEST teams in the MLB:

Indians, 3-0
Tigers, 3-1
Angels 1-2
Tigers 1-2 (so far)

Yankees 8 - Best Teams 5

Three of the four series (nine games) were on the road.

Red Sox last four series:

Devil Rays 2-1
Angels 2-2
Devil Rays 2-1
White Sox 3-0 (so far)

Red Sox 9 - Other Teams 4

Considering the quality of the teams the Yankees & Red Sox have played, the Yankees have done much better. Let's compare apples to apples.

That happens all the time when one team plays a better team than the other...

When the Red Sox took 3 of 4 from Cleveland and then took 2 of 3 from Seattle, the Yankees were playing the Royals during both series

Things even out schedule wise
