The Giants held a pre-game ceremony commemorating the 1962 World Series, which the Yankees won in seven games with a 1-0 victory in Game 7. The collection of players from that series that was on the field today was impressive. Among the Giants standouts were Felipe Alou, Matty Alou, Orlando Cepeda, Juan Marichal, Willie McCovey, Willie Mays and Gaylord Perry. For the Yankees, there were Tex Clevenger, Jim Coates, Hector Lopez, Jack Terry, Bobby Richardson and Ralph Terry.
The game has begun, and is in the second inning. Derek Jeter, who suffered a slight left hip flexor strain, is in the lineup. He's one that never likes to admit he is hurting, but does have a sense of humor about the questioning. He said of his hip: "It's great." Asked if it would take an artificial hip to keep him out, he said: "Bo (Jackson) played with one, didn't he?" Research shows that Jeter was correct, that Jackson played with an artificial hip. Asked if bone sticking out would keep him from the game, he said: "Now that would be a problem."
People may have their complaints about Barry Bonds, but you can't say he isn't engaging when he wants to be. I had an interesting conversation with him today -- not an interview, he didn't want to do that -- but an interesting conversation. He's got opinions, and while you may not agree with him, he's put serious thought into them.
Anyway, on to the lineups. No Jorge Posada (banged up and Wil Nieves catches for Mike Mussina), and no Bobby Abreu (pressing at the plate):
Yankees
Cabrera CF
Cairo 1B
Jeter SS
Rodriguez 3B
Matsui LF
Cano 2B
Thompson RF
Nieves C
Mussina P
Giants
Winn CF
Vizquel SS
Durham 2B
Bonds LF
Klesko 1B
Schierholtz RF
Feliz 3B
Guillermo Rodriguez C
Lowry P

If you really need a reason our season is over, heres a few reasons. 1.The leadoff hitter for the explosive Yankee offence is hitting 256. 2. The number 2 hitter is hitting a red hot 236. 3.Last but not least, our all world catcher is hitting 116. Boy, We are really bringing back Murders Row.
Not too often do you get to see a game in which the AL pitcher has a better batting average than his catcher.
Can't help but think Torre and crew gave this game up before it was started.
What a lineup! Murderers Row and Cano it is not!
$200 million dollar payroll, and the Yanks run a lineup like this out there? Unbelieveable.
Please fire Torre & Cashman now. Do it before the season is over. They deserve it. Please start making some trades. This is so freaking embarassing and unbelievable words can not describe the feelings you get after watching this. Wil Nieves is a stiff. Mussina is a wimp. He can only pitch to this scrub? And Torre and Cashman et al let it all happen. My Goodnesss..i told myself not to watch and i did. I thought the Giants are terrible. But wait the Yankees are worse. Some heads after roll. Did anyone see that the great Rockies just got swept by the Blue Jays? Boy they make everyone look good. Enough already. Fire Torre and Cashman. Let the fire sale begin!!!
Everyone: Please start with the firing chants of Joe Torre and Brian Cashman. This is a bleeping disgrace. They have to go. Abreu, Cano, Giambi, Cabrera, Myers, Mussina, Nieves, Phillips, Farnsworth, Damon. All these guys are stealing their money. What fat overpaid heartless players they are. I really need think this first shot has to be at Cashman than Torre. And then at the trading deadline get rid of the dead weight. I know it will be impossible with some of these salaries from these pigs. But even if they have to take less players in return a message has to be sent. This franchise is in disaray. And it starts with the two biggest parts of the problem which is Cashman and Torre. Please fans stay away. This is the only way a message will get down to Tampa. Get rid of these parasites!!!
Darn! Just as these guys wake up I have to go out!
Hope 'everyone' keeps up all the positive thinking... ;-)
And now the Redsox are about to get another starting pitcher. When is this going to end? Is Cashman ok with this team?
The main problem day-in-day-out, is the offense. Why we haven't traded for a power hitting 1B is inexcusable.
How many friggin times do the Yankees have runners at 3rd less than 2 outs and not score? Abreu strikes out again. I hate him.
Cashman must go for putting this terrible team together.
Torre shoudl've gone after the 2004 season.
Let me be GM and everything will be better.
Well the Orioles should be happy, things should be getting better for them, the Yankees are coming to town.
1st we run a lineup out there that belongs in AA, and now Clemens is relief pitching. This game is an absolute joke, and an embarrassment.
this game is a perfect reason to dump Cashman. Pitiful lineup, A hall of fame pitcher relieving. 3 errors. 3 lousy hits. Farnsworth hit hard, AGAIN. But the ownership no longer seems to care, the stadium is selling out, so why care. Did Steinbrenner morph into Dolan and Wang(Islanders owner)?
Check out everyone but Bruney's ERA who pitched today. All over 5. For the first time ever I am embarrassed as a Yankee fan. I wasn't even embarrassed in the early '90's, they were expected to lose. In the '80's they always were close. But now, noone close in payroll and putting this product out there? I'm truly embarrassed as a Yankee fan.
This team is playing like Torre manages-asleep. Bad at bats, mental errors on the bases and in the field. Joe could never manage a team and he should bend over and kiss his butt that he lasted this long.
The Yankees look terrible. And there is nothing that really can be done. We have some tough contracts to swallow both in trades and releases. As I said this year and next year are the transitional years. Lets get on with it and make the moves of players who'll be here for 2009. Move the young guys into position. Other teams run the youth of their orgainization and live with their ups and downs. I never saw so many lefty pitchers and our lefty lineup is not up to the task.
Please, Yankee brass make the moves for the future of the team . This year is moving toward embarrasment.
Blame Jeter and his overrated D not Farnsworth .... He missed and bobbled double play ground ball.
Annonymous: this more than Jeter. Its the whole dam team. You can't have this caliber of player(s) and be under .500. Cashman has signed long term contracts with older players, Damon, Matsui. Now we are looking at others in the future Posada and Mariano. I'm not saying to not sign them but offer more money up front with a series of 1 year contracts with buyouts in 2nd year. I'd dump Abreu asap. He's not comfortable in a win all situation.
I found it funny that Michael Kay made the statement today that...
"Sometimes you just can't figure baseball out. The Rockies sweep the Yankees, and then they go get swept in Toronto."
What's so hard to figure out? The implication here, in typical Yankees/Michael Kay arrogance, is that the Yankees are so superior to the Blue Jays that this is just some quirky occurrence. Well check the standings today, you'll see Toronto is ahead of the Yankees. Not so quirky.
Glad a few good weeks has Kay and co. thinking the Yankees are back amongst the elite, but they hardly are.
Oh and for everyone here deriding the NL as so much weaker, the Yankees went 9-8 in interleague, while the Mets went 8-7.
I can't believe a team with this payroll has this bad of a bench? You would think the backup catcher who is hittin .116 would be excellent defensively to partially make up for it. They stole 5 bases on him today. How do they have a guy this bad in the majors? How do the Yankees not have even one guy off the bench who scares you?
At what point do the Yankees think of trading Mussina, Myers and Farnsworth and see if they can get some young blood on this team.
Or do they want to play out the string this year like the Giants and Orioles... losing records with aging players who they keep until they have zero trade value?
Want to know what the Yanks will get for Mussina, Myers, and/or Farnsworth? Absolutely nothing. They, like many of their Yankee counterparts, are overpaid and nearly untradeable. Farnsworth is being paid $7 mil per year to do absolutely nothing; unless the Yanks kick in about $5 mil of that contract, why would a team even consider trading anything for him?
I thought the Mussina signing was a good one at the time in the winter; I thought, at the minimum, he'd be able to keep us in games. But that contract has completely backfired on us considering he looks absolutely shot out there. It'll be great news at the end of '08 when Moose, Pavano, and Giambi all come off the books.
The truth is that the Yanks don't exactly have a lot on this team to trade. Nobody wants to bring on these enormous contracts the Yanks have given out so freely over the last couple of years. If you want to find a trading partner for a player like Johnny Damon, for example, you're going to have to kick in about $4 or $5 mil a year in the deal.
I just get the feeling that next year is going to be a completely new Yankees team, which is both good and bad. Torre will undoubtedly be gone; Cashman most likely will also be let go (which I don't agree with). I doubt the Yanks will bring back A-Rod or Abreu and they will probably have to flip a coin on Posada, Rivera, and Clemens (no big deal if he takes off as he is a mercenary anyway). The one nice thing about it is the amount of payroll they will clear off the books; the bad part, obviously, is the team will not even be competitive next year if they let A-Rod go as you can't usually find a player to match his production. Maybe this has to happen; maybe they need to take 1 step back to eventually take the 2 steps forward to improve. Who knows?
Keep Jeter, keep A-Rod. They are the core of the offense.
Keep Melky and Cano -- you need one more year to find out how much better they'll become.
Keep Posada, and give him some time at 1B and DH to rest his legs.
Keep Wang and Pettitte.
Let Mo go -- he deserves a chance to play in another WS. He can't get any saves with this group of arsonists masquerading as set-up "men."
If we're still treading water in 2 weeks, trade Moose, Matsui and Abreu to contenders by July 31.
Phil -
I agree with your post on this topic Nuff said.
This team is disgusting , I had a bad feeling even with the 9 game streak , so I wonder what will be Torre's excuse for this losing, remember the Bone head article saying his job status was the reason for a suspect clubhouse. Now what is it Joe
Cashman has got to go. Immediately. No doubt about it. Terrible lineups, no bench, no pitching staff. Despite a small payroll, every year the A's come up with young talented pitching. The Yankees? Forget it.
Other than Jeter, Posada and perhaps A-Rod (based on this season), is there a true gamer on this team? Someone you don't get nervous about when they are on the on-deck circle? Remember the non-superstars they once had -- Bernie, O'Neill, Tino, Brosius -- none of them you would put on your fantasy team, but you would each of them covering your backside in a foxhole.
Does anyone trust Damon, Matsh-ti, Abreu, Giambi, Cano, the list is endless (and I haven't started with the pitching), to save this train wreck.
Time to bring up the moving van and like the NY Rangers, get younger, faster and hungrier.
I bet the Yankees could get something for Mussina.
Maybe a young OF or 1B to build around
Best get ANYTHING for him before they really become the Orioles or the Giants
BB, This team is lifeless. It's like watching an accident waiting to happen. You really get disgusted when you watch Torre's "sitdown" after the game on YES. His reasoning for the losing reminds of the great Jets coach Rich Kotite. I even heard from YES speculate that the long flight home could help the Yankees. What kind of garbage is that? How about the standings and being embarassed as motivation? See the older players (Abreu, Mussina, Myers et al) already are set in their ways. Mussina can't or won't make adjustments. BTW Michael Kay is hardest on him because Kay doesn't like him. Very professional of him. But my point is that they are what they are. They should try and get to the younger guys. If that means sending Melky and Cano down to the minors i say do it now. They have no discipline and its hurting the team.
Take care
Yeah Phil.
I think Torre has peaked and to me if you can dump casey you can dump this man. NOW , let Mattingly finish the season and if he looks like he cannot do it then bounce him as well. To me during the streak the team became lax instead of keeping the hunger , torre became full of himself giving suspect interviews that should not have been done
I'm amazed you can tie your shoes in the morning -- or can you?
The Boss has already said Torre isn't getting fired. They aren't going to throw Mattingly to the wolves in the middle of the season because he's going to start fresh next season when Torre retires.
Great ideas, let's bounce Torre and then Mattingly so this team can be the laughing stock of the league as it was when The Boss was insane and making stupid decisions after stupid decisions.
Way to go, genius.
You mean they aren't already the laughung stock of the league?
Bomber ain't too bright,
Hey i think the season is lost. They might as well start thinking of next year. I hate saying this but right now they are a laughing stock. Let me draw a football analogy. Could it be that i think this season is lost and i am thinking of football. But here goes: The managering situation with Mattingly and Torre is almost like having a first round draft pick from three years ago sitting on the bench. Waiting for his chance. They need to see if Mattingly can do this job. What track record do they have on him? Great hitter and teammate. Their are many players who fit that bill. The other factor in this is Joe Geradi. I look at Geradi being the free agent who had success his first year as a starter. Just because George stated that they wouldn't fire Torre doesn't mean that he can't or won't. As a footnote i am torn about firing Torre. I almost think he deserves this season for all the success that they had. I would fire Cashman right away. I think that the team he esembled was and is a joke. But if you remember history, like we all do as Yankee fans, we all have a pipedream of 78. We think this team can do the same thing. But remember: Billy resigned or was fired, and a different type of person (Lemon) came in and righted the ship. Getting players back from injuries helped. Plus they were the defending World Champs. I don't see those attributes with this team. Plus Mattingly is not so much different than Torre. But to finally finish my point, finding out about Mattingly this year would be to see his future with the team long term. What do they have to lose? Stay the course ? Is it working? Are the players just not that good?(Abreu, Cano, Cabrera, Mussina) I do think these two issues (managerial future, talent level) have to answered quickly. Or the Yankees will hit the lean years rather quickly.
Delaware: Its not all about MO! Its about wins as a team.
Consider Mo was put in position to get saves by good clubs who put him in position for the save.
There is just a simple mindset which sets some of the underperforming players in a tailspin. Unfortunately, the chemistry is not there. The players have to believe they can win. This does not appear to be the case.
I've derived years of diversion, interest and entertainment from being a Yankees fan. Through thick and thin (theirs and mine) the 'national pastime' has provided a spectrum of pleasures, from taking a trio of squirming kids to minor league games to sitting out my time on the civilian version of the DL in front of the TV watching the Yankees. I am sorry when they do poorly and glad when they do well.
I've always thought that when it stopped adding enjoyment to my life and started being more pain than pleasure I would quit following the game. I wondered why people who seemed to spend most of their 'fan-time' in rage or despair didn't just give it up. Recently I have come to think that those extremes of emotional release, even when the feelings are 'negative', are experienced as beneficial by many guys. So even the failures of the team are an opportunity to 'get it all out', denouncing those who disappoint and screaming for the head of some scapegoat.
Interesting.
Phil,
I think they have been serving Lean Cuisine at the post game buffet all season!
For the record I wouldn't expect Mattingly to be much of a manager. Sitting next to a manager every night isnt exactly qualification to be one, otherwise the bat boy would be qualified to hit!
Diane,
Even without winning and being in first place, dont you still enjoy watching the games? I am sure you find something that keeps you coming back, be it a particular player that you enjoy or the hope of the rise of some youngster. Or someone overcoming adversity or returning to form, whatever i am sure you find your joy in some aspect of the sport and team.
Being frustrated when things arent going well is natural but like with you kids, at times they may disappoint but on the big pictures front your feelings for them dont really change when they do. Venting about their behaviour or seeking advise on dealing with a situation is similar to what you are hearing now here on this site.
Things cycle through. Fortunately for you this organization has the resources and will to accelerate the cycle faster than would happen with others. So as Casual says it may not be long before your back competing for the prize and you can tell others "I stayed with the team through the leans years of 07 and 08".
Its only a game but a frustrating one to watch sometimes!
Nudge,
For me the pleasures definitely outweigh the pains, even in weeks like this. Since lives are not at stake, I can take a reasonably comfortable interest in seeing how the team as a whole and the individual players and coaches handle hard times. I can keep up with familiar faces on the field and on the bench. Many of them provoke older memories. When I see Guidry on the bench I remember the dignity and feeling with which he told us, 'I heard you' when he returned to the Stadium for the first time after the unfortunate way his departure had played out years before. The 'Yankee babies' who grew up under my eye are now men, and men in whom the organization and even its fans can take pride; I can look out among the newer faces to see who else holds out that promise. I have seen the whole Yankee career of Joe Torre (who seems to be a good man as well as a gifted survivor of a system that has chewed up many) and his player-oriented approach. I watch 'old-timers day' every year, not to dwell on 26 championships (which I can do anytime if I want to) but to see again the guys who created so many amazing seasons and to be glad that this is an organization in which old heros are uniquely celebrated still, long after their playing days ended. There is a lot to like about being a Yankees fan, regardless of the outcome of any one game or any one season. Those of us who have followed them for long know how to enjoy all kinds of seasons, and all kinds of games -- this is not our first rodeo.
I was just remarking that for some even the experiences of failure even provide an outlet as an opportunity to vent all sorts of feelings that might have to be held in in other situations.
Something for everyone...
This season is far from over. Abreu for Dye brings in the righty power bat we need. Then we look to trade for a 1st baseman with "pop". The starting pitching is good enough to win the wild card. The main problem is the offense, which can be fixed quickly and easily. Offensive players are always available. Even if the Yanks bring in "The Meat Hook"\Dimitri Young to play 1st, that is an improvement. Bringing Girardi aboard would also "jump start" this team. Long way to go, and the changes necessary are not that difficult to achieve.
Wow a blogger named after me.
Thank you Phil for your post somewhat understanding what I was saying.
For the real NOT too Bright (chump)
Mattingly to fill in the rest of the year would be a PR move and you can still evaluate one;s skill even if the season appears lost they may go on a stretch run winning games making mgmt think maybe we have something here. You would'nt fire Torre and bring in someone new you will fill that slot with an intern and let the new guy start fresh next year. Honestly if the writing is on the wall he has to go then do it now so that by the start of next season that buzz has died down.
PS:
Ya pops is not TO BRIGHT for rasing such a punk that has to hide behind a name.
yeah!
GOOD MORNING EVERYBODY ELSE
Boston 2007 World Champions
Get used to it..
That team is unstoppable
Roy if you rid of TORRE now and bring in Girardi would be cool. Now not after the break, Start the 2nd half with new personal
Detroit might have something to say about that!
It's time to make changes!!!
Get rid of/DFA the following: Farnsworth, Myers, Villone, Nieves, Basak, Cairo, Phillips, and Thompson.
32 percent of this team is filled with non major leaguers and/or scrubs who can't play here. Thanks, Cashman!!!
Abreu goes once the season ends.
Bring back Posada and Mo.
Bring back A-Rod!!!
Trade for Texeria and Gagne- if don't want to give up Hughes, then trade a package of Clippard, Kennedy, Melky, and Tabata.
Get rid of Torre. Bring in Girardi.
Right now Yanks are joke of baseball. We make these moves, we'll be back on top!!!
Roy
I agree with you, but Cash has to pull the trigger now. Not wait until after the allstar break. We could be 17 games out by then
Jimmy,
DFA 8 players and replace them with who?
Clippard, Kennedy, Melky and Tabata may bring back a backup player but not a star. You have to give up toget and theres not much to give up these days.
Jimmy,
Get ride of Cairo? We've got or can easily acquire a better utility infielder?
The 'jokes of baseball' are people who fantasize themselves as omnipotent owners, sweeping the pieces around the board as if the Yankees were their fantasy team.
those players could get a star off a team unloading who did we give up to get Cone etc? if a team is unloading they would take those players, especially with the reviews and age of Tabata and texas at least knowing that CLippard can pitch..... somewhat.
The thing is I feel the yankees should'nt do the trade with that package. Tabata is the future from what some are saying
Diane,
Nice use of omnipotent!
Update on Edwar Ramirez
Scranton Yankees beat reporter Chad Jennings writes on his blog on Edwar Ramirez
http://emedia.thetimes-tribune.com/Blogs/SWBYankees/tabid/552/Default.aspx
Ramirez strikes out five more
Edwar Ramirez just struck out five batters in a row, and it was the top five hitters in the Syracuse Chiefs lineup. This guy has unreal strikeout numbers this year, and it's thanks to a rediculous changeup that some scouts have confused for a split finger.
Between Double-A and Triple-A, Ramirez has 74 strikeouts in 40.1 innings. He's pitched in 23 games, and given up three runs. His changeup is filthy, his fastball sits around 91 mph and his slider is an effective pitch.
The numbers are tantalizing, but he might not be quite ready for New York just yet. Although he has just 17 walks, the Yankees want to see more consistency with his four-seamer.
"We're trying to get this guy ready for the big leagues, and do that he needs better fastball command," pitching coach Dave Eiland said. "And he knows that."
So Ramirez is working on his fastball, and his slider, to compliment that nearly unhitable change.
"He's coming along nicely," Eiland said, and he seemed to know it was an understatement
Nudge,
It was a considered use. Real owners do not have the omnipotent control over the whole world of baseball that these fantasists assign themselves.
The Yanks have beat the R\Sox 4 of the last 6 times they have met. The Yanks have "pounded" all thee R\Sox starting pitchers. The Yanks have even defeated Papelbon. The Yanks continue to beat themselves with a lack of intensity from both the field and dugout. We currently are our own worst enemy. Fire Torre\hire Girardi. Trade Abreu for Dye, give Cano the Bump Bailey ultimatum from "The Natural", and if he doesn't respond, trade em. Bring in a 1st baseman with "pop", and DL Damon for a month. Unless it's Sept. or the playoffs, never use Clemens in relief. The team saw that yesterday, and they took it as a "white flag" and immediately "layed down". Torre has no idea what is occuring both on the field and in the heads of his players. Yesterday was a perfect example of that.
So Kat, what's so interesting about Barry Bonds, what exactly did you talk about ... his cheating on his wife? How do his children feel about that?
The steroids?
Calling Andy Van Slyke "the great white hope?"
What does he have to teach us?
He's engaging, but what's really the substance under that?
Amen Jimmy on all of your ideas ... maybe keep Cairo, we need a role player.
I say trade for Ty Wiggington who can play any position except CF and pitch. Don't know if he can catch but probaby if he tried.
Thought for today. Xavier Nady and Kazmir, imagine if the Mets had kept both of them, and Izzy.
BB,
Other teams....other teams...Yankees are not the only team that would be offering. You have to outbid other teams. Clippard even you guys wanted gone, Melky is proving he is nothing but a 4th OF, Kennedy is AA and hasnt proven much yet, Tabata is still working his way from A ball and probably more usefel to the Yanks since they have huge outfield holes coming.
The team that is dumping is looking for players ready or almost ready, not rehab projects or long term prospects.
Cone was traded to the Yanks because he was a pain in the labor! He was a radical union guy and a clubhouse snitch. Thats why the got him for minor leaguers.
Nudge -
DId'nt know that about Cone, take your word on that one.
1995 was the year after the strike so the a number of the radical union reps were traded the following year.
Cone was a "rent a player", back in the day when players in the final month or 2 of their contract were traded for nothing if their current team thought they might walk. He was a "labor activist", but no team gives a player of his ability away just because they are pro union. Get it right. Look at Glavine as a case in point.
Ok Roy,
So what your saying is that teams would let a player go i n a trade involving minor leaguers especailly if they feel that the Player is not returning. I still would'nt make that trade for Tex
Someone wrote that Hughes is injury prone. I wonder if that is true ... maybe bad stretching and silly drills they don't need are the problem? So he twisted his ankle. It was just bad luck.
Stop with the stupid drills and just let the kid pitch. He can be another Tom Seaver, only not so pompous.
Clearly big moves are coming ... and must come, beyond trading or releasing one third to half of the "team ..." which is a no heart 200 million dollar disgrace.
Mo
A-Rod
Posada
Pettitte
Keep all of them. Posada is the heart of the team. Mo is a very good man.
Then add ...
Texiera
Girardi
Gagne
I still say try for down year guys like Jeremy Sowers, (Ruse, Ca. might not agree) Cattalanato and then turn them around.
When was the last time we had one Omar GM archetype deal? A Cone, a Wells, an O'Neil deal?
Omar finds guys off the scrap heap like he's buying a Blueberry Squishy at
7-11. Why can't The Cash Man?
Get down guys with talent and turn them around ... just as other teams turned around Lilly, Westbrook and even (I know this is hard to believe) Weaver. Did you see him in the World Series last year. (Don't look this year.)
Coal vs. diamonds.
Get a guy like Ty Wiggy. A grinder.
Find guys like Chuck K., O'Neil, Tino ... a new core. This guy Marcum on Toronto throws well. Why don't we have guys like him ...?
And why do teams like Colorado have a great core and we don't? What about Hunter Pence on the Astros. Who missed on him? Where's a Ben Sheets?
The whole organizational paradigm is based on globalization and spreading the Yankee logo to the Caribbean and Asia. That's fine if it works. It works in the Domincan and Panama ... great, find more Mos!
But get rid of that as the main focus (which it has become) and you can turn the team around in less than two years.
Find the best U.S. high school and college kids. They're right here and our scouts basically are horrible or blind.
Instead they're messing around in China. (The numbers say there is potential there) It's ok if it is can't miss guys, like 7'7" basketball players re Yao Ming. But Irabu and Igawa?
When will they learn?
Good scouting
Good trading
Remember it is an American game and part of our history.
Ask a Cecil Fielder, "Hey is your son any good?"
Cecil: "Yeah, he's ok."
So why didn't we draft his son? No one asked him if his kid was good?
Why again not sign Josh Hamilton and his arm and bat speed as another Paul O'Neil (since we had Gooden, Howe) for nothing instead of 16 million for Abreu?
It's sickening.
Cashman just can't make things work like this. Torre doesn't want to lose but the whole structure is so messed up they can't win like this.
Clemens in relief.
Pettitte in relief.
A catcher hitting .100. Where's Toby Hall?
Sigh ...
Anthony,
The team also had the chance to sign pena's son when they was doing try out's in Yankee Stadium and htey ignored him and I think signed MAttingly's son who I hear is trash last time I asked, I beleive the Mets signed Pena's son.
I know you all hate this guy SHeffield but you really need to read the whole GQ article. His wife said some things that I heard alot of former players say before regarding the yankee brain trust regarding Families
BB
tony pena son is with the royals
I am trying to remember that these are harmless fantasies which no doubt give pleasure to their day-dreamers.
I get too cranky trying to treat them as if they made sense.
Especially when perpetrated by someone who can't remember who Jeter is.
For example, it is well publicized that Cecil Fielder and his son haven't spoken in years.
But it makes a nice fantasy.
is he really?
I thought omar signed him ?
ohh well, I know from what they repeorted here in the papers was that he was pretty good.
Bronx Bomber-
I wouldn't give up guys like Tabata for Tex either. I'd go after players like "Da Meat Hook", Wiggington, Sweeney, etc. to fill the 1B hole.
I've always liked "The Sheff". He played hard, played hurt, and played extremely well. If we had a team with his desire to win, we would be in 1st place.
Newsflash -
Pena Jr. Royals
FRANSICO Pena (Tony's Son - METS (16 yrs old)
Cashman should be working 24HRS a day on the Abreu for Dye deal. Dye has heart, and defensively is far superior to Abreu\The Michelin Man in RF.
GM Kenny Williams are interested in Joba or Ian
http://www.nypost.com/seven/06252007/sports/yankees/rocket_gives_rare_dose_of_relief_yankees_george_king.htm?page=0
The White Sox have had a scout looking at Yankees’ Double-A pitchers Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain. Chicago general manager Kenny Williams has vowed to make changes, and if he wants to deal Mark Buehrle or Jermaine Dye, expect the Yankees to be interested. Williams talks regularly with Brian Cashman. Dye has been out since Friday with a quad injury.
Buerhle for Joba? No thanks. Advice to Cashman Please hangup the phone immediately. Maybe, I would considered trading Clippard for Buerhle not Joba or Ian..
I'm glad that Interleague play is OVER! Let's face it: the Yanks just don't have the type of roster to play NL style baseball. There are too many weak hitters in the lineup and to have the pitcher bat on top of that? In the 3 series that we played in NL parks, we were 2-7. In the 2 series that we played at the Stadium, we were 5-1.
There really isn't much that can be done with trades. Who would want these bloated contracts? We're stuck with them and the only thing that we can hope for is for these guys to make it interesting for the rest of the season. I just don't want any White Sox players as they haven't done a thing all season. What makes any of you think that they would all of a sudden "find it" if they were traded to the Yanks? I certainly do not want to trade any of our young pitching for them. I'll live and die with what we have.
I'm still going to hope for the best, but I'm going to enjoy watching the games no matter what.
how old is Buerlhe??
If he is fairly young I will package abreau and Ian and others for buerlhe and Dye. Dye makes 7 mil a year in buerlhe your getting the LH pitcher you thought you was with Igwanna (joke) and can rid him to the Pen because Igwanna is a bum.
Roy - Dye is also hurt and on the DL right now.
This is from Heyman:
Sources indicate the three names the Sox have sought for Buehrle from the Yankees are Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy and Joba Chamberlain, by coincidence exactly the three the Yankees won't surrender.
Yanks are not going to trade Clippard or kennedy or Chamberlain for a 3 month rental in Buerhle.
Trading Abreu for Dye makes sense but as we speak it looks as though Dye is headed to the DL w/a hamstring injury and Abreu' buddy Guillen might be on the verge of getting the axe.
Roy,
You need to do a little reading before you spout absolutes. I was actually following baseball during the 94-95 era, obviously you werent. It is well documented the house cleaning that went on at many ballclubs of the guys that instigated the labor strife. Team after team released, traded away or demoted players that spearheaded to players efforts. Cone was the best of those players but certainly only one of many. Because Glavine wasnt traded doesnt change the fact that Cone was. Dont try negatives to disprove a positive it doesnt work. Google the subject and see what went on in cities like Kansas City. There are multiple references for those that aren't up on history beyond 5 years to educate yourselves before you attack and make yourself look foolish.
So in your own words Get It Right!
As an owner of Jermaine Dye I speak on behalf of his underwhelming numbers and ask in earnest...
Roy WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!!!
DYE IS AWFUL AWUFUL TERRIBLE THIS YEAR AND NOW LIKELY HEADED TO THE DL!!
ruse,
If Guillen gets the axe, will the CWS take a look at Girardi (who wants to be based in Chicago because of his father's illness)?
Or who do you think will get the job?
DIANE
That is a possiblity. It may not be in Girardi's interests to take over a team in such disarray. My sense is if Guillen is fired they might hand it over to an interim manager within the org.
BTW
You've mentioned that you go to Staten Island Yankee games from time to time.It might be fun to check out Dellin Betances highly touted Yankee pitching prospect.
CHIPPER-
I haven't seen anything this AM about Dye going on the DL, though I heard he was headed in that direction. I'd still make the deal immediately. We gotta shed The Michelin Man\Abreu. Addition by subtraction. Those 3 top minor leaguers for Buehrle, is just the "opener". The W\Sox are positioning themselves to get 2 of them at best. No way. Our problem isn't starting pitching. It is hitting in general, and hitting with runners in scoring position specifically. We get both Dye, & either Da Meat Hook, Wigginton, or Sweeney added to the current lineup and we'll get the "wild card" spot. From what I've read, the R\Sox are going after Buehrle big time. They are still worried about the Yanks, especially after losing the last 2 series to us, and seeing Dice "Irabu", Beckett, Wakefield, The Schill, Okajima, and Papelbon get banged around. We need 2 "sticks". 1 in RF, and 1 at 1B.
SLUDGE-
Stop being a "Fountain of mis-information". We got Cone for the reason I sighted. Your in error, because you rely on Google for your "2nd hand information". Post on what you know 1st hand, not what you "Google", and you just might gain some credibility. A baseball historian you are not.
ruse,
Thanks for the 'heads-up' about Betances, I'll watch for him if I get a chance any time soon. If I do, I'll provide a scouting report... ;-)
