I know a couple of the Yankee relievers are the bane of some of your existence (cough, cough, Myers, Farnsworth, Vizcaino, cough, cough). So here are some numbers on the top relievers as far as percent of inherited runners scored this season. This isn't relevant for closers, who rarely have inherited runners. The stats I looked up only include relievers who have entered with at least 14 inherited runners so far.
Tied for first, having not allowed one inherited runner to score this season, are the Mets' Aaron Heilman (I know, surprising, 16 inherited, zero scored), and the Cubs' Michael Wuertz (18, 0).
Next best are:
Indians' Rafael Betancourt, 5.3 %, 19-1
Red Sox's Hideki Okajima, 6.3%, 16-1
Twins' Dennys Reyes, 7.1%, 14-1
Dodgers' Joe Beimel, 9.1%, 22-2
Twins' Pat Neshek, 11.5%, 26-3
Diamondbacks' Tony Pena, 11.8%, 17-2
Rangers' Frank Francisco, 12.5%, 16-2
Red Sox's J.C. Romerro, 13.3%, 15-2
Yankees' with 10+ inherited runners
Ron Villone, 20%, 10-2
Brian Bruney, 30.4%, 23-7
Scott Proctor, 30.8%, 26-8
Luis Vizcaino, 35.3%, 34-12
Mike Myers, 40.0%, 35-14
Mariano Rivera, 54.5%, 11-6
Another stat is baserunners allowed per nine innings. For Yankees relievers who have pitched double-digit innings in relief, here are the #s:
Mariano Rivera, 11.06 baserunners/9
Mike Myers, 11.53
Scott Proctor, 12.29
Sean Henn, 13.979
Luis Vizcaino, 14.11
Brian Bruney, 14.34
Ron Villone, 15.00
Kyle Farnsworth, 15.17 (yes, that's bad)
Incidentally, for the Vizcaino haters, his June has been quite solid. Opponents are batting a mere .167 against him, with a .278 slugging percentage. He's allowed one earned run on six hits and seven walks in 11 innings.

Isn't Romero a free agent?
Farnsworth doesn't need any inherited runners since he usually walks the first guy faced and then gives up a hit to the next guy.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but we are going to lose this game tonight. Don't believe me? check out the evidence. Yanks cant hit pitchers they havent seen before. They havent seen Guthrie. Guthrie throws 97mph. Guthrie has under a 3 ERA and under a 1 WHIP pitching in the daunting AL East. Finally, in his game against the Sox he went 8 and a third scoreless innings. I want the yanks to win but its a longshot at best.
those are some insane numbers. I'm guessing the reason Farnsworth isn't on that list of giving up inherited runners is because Joe doesn't bring him in during an inning - I'm also guessing that most of those runners Rivera has inherited are courtesy of mr. farnsworth as well.
just some bad numbers all around.
But great info, Kat!
Anon
Are you French?
Michael,
You're thinking of Inconnu, hung around here for a while...
I don't know Diane...
Anon sounds quite like a "surrender monkey" to me.
...that was pre-war of course...
...now he's working on a memoir. It's going to be about how all along he was in the Resistance.
LOL
;-)
Diane, What's with the pre-war stuff? Do you want us to win in Iraq?
Phil
Relax
Inside joke
Abreu batting 8th...Getting the A-Rod treatment.
Phil,
I would never interject politics into a baseball blog.
Promise.
But sometimes I get silly and the Archangel from time to time obliges by being my partner in that, since he has his moments of hilarity as well...
(No, that wasn't religion being smuggled into a baseball blog, either. I do have principles!)
You'll get used to us.
The thing about the AR treatment is that batting 8th does work wonders. But not until the following year.
Diane-DOES NOT HATE OUR TROOPS I PROMISE YOU PHIL...
Michael PTRS, I will relax. Can't help it. Yankee wins are not so important when it comes to the fighting against a jihad. I am sorry if i jumped the gun. For lack of a better word.
I see Phil has a sense of humor as well... ;-)
This pitcher of theirs may be good but today is DJ's birthday and he's never lost on his birthday EVER.
Look it up RUSE ;-)
MICHAEL
I believe you !
This team is dead and lifeless...like their manager.
Fire Torre!!!
They STINK!!!
Abreu and Cabrera can't even communicate on catching a routine fly ball.
Another DP!
WOW.
If Cabrera makes out then "Bunting Bobby" leads off
I feel really bad for Andy!
You'd think that these bums would do something to help the guy out.
I knew they'd continue stinking. But Torre will still be here. We could lose every game from now on( not an impossibility) and Torre will still be there. God help this pathetic team.
Jimmy, Jim, James...or whatever,
Perhaps you should turn off your TV and save yourself from the torture of watching Yankee Baseball.
What's pathetic is that you cannot add anything of value to this blog because of your continuous bitching and moaning without any suggestions other than to fire Torre.
That is not an option. Torre will be replaced at the end of the season by Mattingly and he will start fresh next season.
You don't fire Torre in the middle of the season and hand over a sinking ship to Mattingly because that wouldn't be fair to him.
Get a life and find another hobby.
Maybe Damon got this kid rattled a bit.
I just don't get Abreu at all. It's like he's going up there looking to walk instead of swinging the bat. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt when he was slumping before, but come'on here. He's just lost up there.
Hey Chuckles, the name is Jim
jerk. I was stating the obvious twit. Torre gets to much credit. when they won the 4 titles, that was a team that Showalter assembled. And firing him probalby will not solve the season. But, sometimes a shake up is needed. Hell I'd be the last one to normally ask for it. I watched the revolving door managers of the '70's and '80's. But they didn't have this talent. You are a dumb ass, and an A$$hole to pick ME out for wanting Torre fired. So many others have said that. Don't start a fight with me Jerk.
Hey! Call him a twit or a jerk but not both.
That's right. Twit and jerk are mutually exclusive terms.
Hey Jim....
Anytime you want to turn off the TV and cry -- go ahead.
Your solution is to fire Torre and that ain't happening.
Maybe you should think before you speak.
Hey chuckles, chuckle yourself to death. If you had at least a pea in your brain, I said that Torre will be here at years end, dumb ass. You have picked a fight with me for some reason. Big Mistake. I have been a die hard since 1975, when I was 3. I call it as I see it. Torre has always been overrated. Yes I was thrilled when we won. And Torre was good at the time. But times change. Managers need to adapt. Torre has not in the past few years. Plus, if it were not for Michaels and Watson, he'd still be broadcasting. I know that firing him will not turn things around, but the feeling of comfort might evaporate around these pampered millionaires. I think you need to think before You speak, you are truly ignorant.
Hmmm, I guess Jim gets his feathers ruffled when he's called out on his ridiculous and tiresome commentary.
What's with the name-calling?
Is your position that ridiculous to defend that you have to resort to calling me names like a child?
Yep, Torre doesn't deserve any credit for having the 9th most managerial wins in MLB history.
It's Buck Showalter and Gene Michael who deserves that credit.
Please, you're embarrassing yourself.
I've been a diehard fan of this club just as long as you, but that doesn't make me a super fan as you seem to suggest.
It's okay to lose this argument and I forgive you for the juvenile name-calling.
Maybe you can debate an issue next time without crying that I'm picking on you.

O.K. I'm embarrassing myself. Please. Look in the mirror. Torre has the 9th most wins in history. Hello??? A monkey could have won those many games with the talent he had assembled. What did he have prior to '96? He was Clueless Joe? What has he won since "00 when Showalter and Watson's team started to leave? NOTHING! And no I am not crying my little person. And please, where oh where have I called myself a superfan? You earn your scorn.
"You earn your scorn"
LOL...that's funny. Now, you're really embarrassing yourself with your little cliches.
That's a pretty lame excuse for Torre winning so many games. Everyone else did it for him.
I guess Bobby Cox is overrated too because his GM has given him the tools to succeed with a great farm for years.
My superfan reference was your insistence on how great of a fan you are because you've followed this team since '75.
So what? Does that make you special?
So now what? We are finding new ways to lose games.
Can they fire torre now?
Wow, another impressive effort. way to go bullpen!!! Hey Chuckles, Torre relies on such good guys!!! Hey this is the first time Chuckles that Torre left someone in who can't find the plate. Wow, Chuckles, this is the first time that Torre picks the perfect guys to get the outs. BRING IN SOMEONE TO THROW STRIKES! Especially after the hit batsman that was not called. Chuckles, you are as stupid as Torre.
Hey chuckles, going to attack Phil now?
FIRE CASHMAN & TORRE..PLEASE GEORGE DO IT NOW..QUICKLY SO WE START WATCHING THIS TEAM AGAIN. SAY WITH ME BOYS AND GIRLS THEY MUST GO!!! NOW!! I AM DONE WATCHING. HAVE A FUN REST OF THE SEASON. MIGUEL CAIRO? R U KIDDING ME..MELKY CABRERA R U KIDDING US? CANO? ABREU? I DONT CARE GET THEM THE HELL OUT OF HERE. THIS IS THE WORST
Please fire Torre. Please!!!
Ah yes, Jim.
The superfan calls resorts back to name-calling when he can't make a point.
Here's a question for you, Jimbo:
Name a pitcher in that pen outside of Mo who CAN throw strikes consistently?
Thank you for handing me another winning argument.
You're too easy.
Yes, Bobby Cox is overrated. Didn't do much with the talent he had in Toronto. Never won anything. And he has always had talent in Atlanta- great pitching.
I don't think you have won an argument. Not one. And noone can throw strikes consitently in that pen. IE. Find someone. IE., maybe Britton. And tonight, you should have given the ball to Rivera. Close the 9th, take your luck in the 10th. Better than the ending they had. You have won no argument. Plus, I'm not in some win loss game here, little man.
I forgot to answer how I embarrassed myself about how Showalter, Michaels and Watson built the dynasty. Here we Go Chuckles- this might be hard for you to understand:Some of the core players they got before Torre, Cashman who formed the 4 championships:
Martinez
Pettite
Rivera
Key
Boggs
Strawberry
Cone
Jeter
Posada
O'Neill
Williams
Nelson
Leyritz
Most everything was Watson and Michaels.
What happened to Brian Bruney? Vizicano? hasn't Viz been pitching better? I love this managers' report. Shows no sign of anger. Not a damn thing. It's like he's divorced himself from the situation. When is he going to realize this is a reflection of him. Finally these words of wisdom. We are going to have to hit and throw strikes. Great stuff. These reporters are wimps. Probaly never threw a ball in anger. Listen we are all idiots to get upset over this. I am sure Abreu, Cano, Proctor and Torre will sleep well tonight. Not us.
And those teams did not have the assembled talent of what Torre and Cashman have assembled since 2001. Not close. We did not have all-stars at every position. So, if Torre is so great, how come no titles since 2000? He pampers his players. The dynasty was a core of players who gave a crap. This team doesn't. Listen to Torre in his post game interviews. It is pathetic.
Phil, watch out Chuckles the clown might come at you for negativity. Semper Fi!.
Its time to get younger. Start the transition, Now. Cashman do not do anything crazy, we may end up with the wild card even in our year of change. The nucleus is there and OK. The bit players are not coming through.
Cano should be benched for a couple of days. His inability to lay down a bunt should be an opportunity to rest his butt.
Pathetic is the only word to describe the play of this team. Caberra is the CF call Abreu off the ball. Joe must not stand pat with the same lineup tomorrow. Thompson in the OF, Basak at second base, Phillips at first. Message must be sent.
Damon in no condition to play. He hit a hanging curve.
My rant for tonight.
It's funny how Jim gets flustered and acts like a child when he gets called out on his ridiculous logic.
Torre does have titles since 2000 -- they're called AL East titles.
How many managers in MLB have ever had 13 straight postseason appearances in their careers?
That answer is Joe Torre and Bobby Cox -- both Hall of Fame managers, but completely overrated in the eyes of a guy named Jim.
Nope, logic is not Jim's strongest trait.
Pitchers can't seem to throw strikes, AGAIN!!!!!!! Three walks in the 9th and we lose.
We get 2 men on with 1 out and "Bunting Bobby" Abreu "comes through again".
I agree with Larry and it's time to send a message to this pathetic group.
I'm gonna go and watch the Dodgers/D'backs game.
Nah, I'm sick of baseball tonight. I'm gonna play a game of bowling with my son on Wii.
Till tomorrow Folks!
Wow, Al East and NL east titles will get you a hot dog and a soda. You truly show how dumb you are. Wow, how many MLB managers have had 13 postseason appearances? WOWWWWWW!!! Didn't realize that Miller Huggins, Joe McCarthy, Casey Stengels, John McGraw, Tommy Lasorda,Walter Alston,Connie Mack et al. had such luxuries as ridiculous division titles. Division titles are meaningless. Cox has 1 measly WS title. That's all that counts. Logic is not your best trait, keep it up buddy, you will continue to lose.
Chuckles is a proven idiot by his responses. I'm tired of responding to stupidity. He can respond with whatever wit he seems amusing to him. I'm done lowering my IQ, with him, so have at it CHUCKLES. I am done wasting my time with you. You started this idiocy with me, now I'm washing my hands of you. So if you post again against me have at it, I don't care anymore. USMC Semper FI
For someone calling another person "stupid", you'd think he would've at least learned to read.
I said how many managers have 13 STRAIGHT postseason appearances.
Besides, those guys you've mentioned all have one thing in common -- they are all in the Hall of Fame.
Torre has 4 rings on his finger.
How many does Lasorda have?
The answer is 2.
I guess Lasorda was overrated as well because the Dodgers had the best farm for decades and spent the money to give him the tools he needed to win.
Amazing. Torre has more postseason appearances, more rings, and more career wins than Lasorda.
Wow, Jim. You make it so easy for me to make you look like a fool.
PS: It might be best if you create your own lines instead of repeating mine.
One last thing chuckles, I saw saomeone posted above me as Jimmy, I am not that person. He called for Torre's firing. I said Torre will still be here at season's end. Different people A$$hole.
Yeah 13 appearances thanks to more divisions and wild cards. You make it easy to make you look like the fool. Hey is the reason that Torre has more postseason wins than Lasorda because, TORRE HAS MORE ROUNDS TO PLAY DUMBASS!!
Wow, you walked into that one, I was done with you, but damn you are stupid. Does that mean you consider
Bernie Williams accomplishments are better in postseason than Ruth or Mantle? Hey, he has more---oh I forgot the extra rounds gives more opportunity. Damn you are stupid. 'Nuff said
Screw this, can we just agree that the Yankees suck at this point?
Obviously, reading is not your strong suit either.
Where did I say anything about Torre having more postseason wins than Lasorda in the following statement?
"Torre has more postseason appearances, more rings, and more career wins than Lasorda."
The answer is -- it doesn't.
I didn't say postseason wins, genius.
Please learn to read before you further embarrass yourself.
Since I had to torture myself
and look at this one more time, here you go DUMB ASS.
It is called reading between the lines. This may be hard for you to understand. I proved the point. I made a typo in saying wins. HERE IS MY POINT IN BOLD A$$HOLE. TORRE HAS MORE APPEARANCES IN POSTSEASON. BIG FRIGGIN DEAL!!!!THAT IS BEACAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENED POST 1994, you stupid A$$. ANYONE PRIOR TO 1995 DID NOT HAVE THAT LUXURY.
Chuckles, get a real friggin name. Damn. You came at me first, and I was done with this, but damn give it up.
Hmmm, I'm the dumb ass but you can't make a point without using childish name-calling.
Sounds good.
I'll ask my 8 yr old what are the best words he hears kids call each other on the playground and I'll be smarter than you.
You obviously can't read between the lines either because you accused me of saying something I didn't say and went all 3 yr old child on me.
Well, if you want me to tell you another category Torre beats Lasorda, I can play that game all day long.
Unfortunately, you'll just find another explanation why the facts are wrong and your incoherent opinion is right.
Obviously, you don't like facts when they don't coincide with your hatred for someone.
Hey, ask your 8 year old how many times you accuse someone and attack someone in print. How bout that big guy? You attacked and told me to get a life and get a hobby( hell you were wrongly attaching me to someone else.). I responded to you, and yes I have no respect for you for that attack A$$hole.
Thank you for proving my point once again.
You can't defend a single argument without calling people names.
Chalk up another win for me.
To end this, thank you for not actually defending an argument on your own. I ripped all of yours apart. I defended every argument very well. And to take your lame ending, chalk one up for me. Now, can we get into who's dad can beat up who's dad. I feel that is what is next since you brought up your 8 year old. Oh wait, I have better things to do. Now, you started an argument with me for no good reason on a this blog. I responded, and now your lame response will be "Thank you for proving my point again" O.K. whatever. You my friend, where it is most likely 12:52 A.M. and where I am in beautiful Kaneohe Bay,HI(don't miss L.I. that much) is 6:52 P.M. can go screw yourself. How's the surf there dipshit?
Wow, that's a stretch.
I mentioned a child once because you were acting like one with all the name-calling.
Just pointing out that a child can make the same arguments you did by resorting to that stuff.
If that floats your boat, or surfboard -- go for it.
However, it's hard to claim a victory when presented with facts and your responses are:
you're a dumb ass
you're an A$$hole
you're an idiot
you stupid ass
Sounds like you defended your arguments like a champ.
I guess you've been hit in the head with a surfboard more than once.
great pen. the good news is if the game is close tommorrow we have coming in out of the pen; bruney, kyle, proctor, vizciano, villone, and myers before mariano..
doesn't everyone feel good about that pen...this is afriggin joke.... try other things; ramirez, britton, a friggin trade...
they are now tampa and other teams laugh at them, they are a joke..
I said every one of those descriptions describing someone who attacked me in print. Just a response, to being wrongly attacked in print. Live with it. Maybe you shouldn't say things about people before you run at the mouth. I will respond in kind.
Or Chuckles, do you think you can say stuff about people with no merit and think noone will respond. Well, that's why I described you in those terms.
And for anyone who is wondering what the hell this is about, read the post from chuckles to Jimmy, james,Jim or whatever. That is what I'm angry about.
Personally, I don't care if you call me names. It just reflects bad on you.
However, it does prove that you can't make an argument without responding like a child.
Perhaps you should stop posting on a blog if you don't like being called out for making ridiculous comments.
It sounds like you can't handle it.
By the way, telling me where you live and how great the surf is in HI has exactly what to do with Joe Torre and this debate?
Well, I made the HI comment wondering what the hell you are doing up at this hour on a computer over there. Get a life. I'm heading to Waikiki. Last but not least, you made the ridiculous comments. Try and disprove what I said. TRY IT!!! Try and prove the dynasty was not built on Michaels,Watson and Showalter. Try and say what great things Torre has done since 2000. Try and prove how making the postseason in an era of 4 teams per league is better than the managers I mention. TRY TRY TRY!. You are ridiculous.
Jim and Chuckles:
It's time for a timeout. Go sit in the corner and think about what you've done. At least you're not total d*cks like Roy Storing!
I don't live on the East Coast so it's not as late here as you think.
Secondly, I work a ton of midnights and I have to stay up late to stay on a regualr schedule.
Not that any of it has anything to do with this debate since you keep changing the topic.
I never said Michaels, Watson, and Showalter had nothing to do with the dynasty.
You just refused to give Torre his due as well.
Your hatred for Torre is truly ridiculous that you can't even give the guy his due.
I bet fans of every other team in baseball would jump at the chance to have the success the Yanks have had under Torre.
It doesn't matter to anyone but spoiled rotten Yankee fans whether they have won since 2000 or not because the postseason is often a crapshoot and a hot team can beat the best team in MLB at anytime.
The late 90s team won because of their rotation. It's no coincidence that they haven't been to the WS since 2003 because their pitching hasn't been very good.
This team will be fine when the youngsters from Trenton -- along with Hughes and Wang are in the rotation.
Ahhhhh..
Nothing like watching two knuckle-draggers prove their stupidity. Hey guys...no one cares whose is biggest. Go get a room.
I hope someone has cleaned out the sandbox...
JIM B. has a good article on White Sox's scouting our top propects at AA Trenton. Kennedy and Chamberlin sound quite good.
As I have commented prior. I hope Cashman and the powers to be stay sane. We don't need crazy fixes here. We have some excellent prospects ready to hit the big time, Hughes,Chamberlin and Kennedy.
To attempt to save this season with a blockbuster trade is wrong. To sell our youth for this season is wrong. Save our pitching prospects is right.
If Cano, Abreu, Cabrerra, Matsui had timely hits or moved runners and the bullpen could find homeplate. Bruney and Proctor couldn't find homeplate with GPS their last couple of outings. We could have Marv Throneberry at firstbase and win.
Please Cashman resists selling of our youth. So,we don't win this year. We maybe in position big time by 2009.
One good thought about this year. Mo's longevity is improving with each game. His prospects for a longer career are improving. He'll be showing no ill affects from this years pitching duties.
Glad to see some normal people here this morning! (Who were those guys???)
Larry, love your look at the bright side! The team has definitely added a year to Mo's future career...
For those who don't like to see Joe Torre behaving calmly for the cameras, all they needed to do was watch him in the dugout. He built up to the JT equivalent of full 'diva' mode by the time Proctor walked the last guy -- complete with eye-rolling and head-shaking.
Girardi has said that Torre can scream with the best, but only does it behind closed doors.
What was that sound I heard as I was trying to go to sleep?
Diane,
Ive noticed the worse the team plays, the worse some of your "colleagues" here treat each other. Its like watching Tigers eat their young!
Remember this is only a game. Here are the real heroes if you are interested

Nudge,
Some of us try to maintain a level of sanity, even if it's with our own peculiar brand of humor, but rage and despair seem to prevail pretty quickly, with scapegoats (whether it's other bloggers or NYY personnel) much in demand.
Of course some of the sane folks just check out until things settle down. They'll be back later today.
"Chuckles" singled out Jim for some weird reason.
Jim made a comment that's been made hundreds of times on this blog and millions of times in Yankeeland, but for some strange reason "Chuckles" decided to be rude and pick a fight with Jim.
I understand Jim's frustration after being attacked.
Yankees Fans: please don't take the bait by the likes of "Chuckles" and people like him who just try to create trouble to make themselves appear to be special (while proving to be classless and childish).
We should only be responding to people who act like responsible adults.
Hey guys, can we stop with the name calling, that's playground stuff. Stick to debates, it's more interesting for everyone.
Phil, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but there will be no wildcard. We are 6 1/2 games back chasing 5 teams, not one. And flat out, the Indians & A's are just better teams.
Fire Torre is akin to all those fans that scream "put the backup quarterback in" simply because they are pissed with the way the starter is presently playing. With the injuries, bad bullpen, and bad bench, no one is turning this crew into a winner.
Look, Torre doesn't get a free pass, but this team simply is not a championship team. We scored 4 runs in a three game series at Coors. We lost 2 of 3 to the pathetic Giants. Our bullpen can't throw strikes, we have light hitting Cairo at first base, we have no bench, etc. The tell tale sign for me is that this team can't for the life of them get a runner home from 3rd with less than two outs or execute a bunt. Championship teams (or even those that hope to compete for one) execute much more often than the 2007 Yankees.
While I don't like the job Torre has done this year, firing him won't fix anything. He's not going anywhere. If you can't stand to watch, hop off the bandwagon. We'll swing by in a few years to pick you up....
Michaelz,
Although I have been as pessimistic about this team as anyone on here, I still would not totally rule out a shot at the wild card. Albeit a very slim chance, if Cashman (Ha!) can make a few deals that either sures up 1B, an OF position of solid bench player, in addition certain players having off seasons pick it up a bit, then maybe you make a run at a WC. I am doubtful but I have not yet put on my Funeral suit.
MICHAELZ, well said.
We don't have a very good team overall right now, but it is what it is, and no one person can make up for its multiple deficits. We can still hope for some modestly positive trade moves and that one or two guys who usually do better in the second half will heat up. If those two things go in our favor the team may still be able to build on the great years that AR, DJ and JP are having.
P.S. Funny how some think it helps to call out the name-callers with more name-calling, isn't it?
NUDGE,
I too would like to think that a run at a WC is not completely out of the question if the aforementioned factors go our way...
