Some offense, Phil Hughes updatae

Much better start for the Yankees tonight. They scored five runs in the first inning and batted around.
Belatedly, here are the lineups:

Yankees
Damon CF
Jeter SS
Matsui LF
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Giambi DH
Phelps 1B
Cano 2B
Cabrera RF

Clippard P

Blue Jays
Rios RF
Overbay 1B
Wells CF
Stairs LF
Thomas DH
Hill 2B
Clark 3B
Fasano C
McDonald SS

Litsch P

Litsch has already been chased from the game and replaced by lefty Brian Tallet. Damon led off the game with a home run, and led off the second inning with a single to left field -- the 2,000th hit of his career.
There were three other hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly in the first inning, with Josh Phelps driving in two runs and Robinson Cano one.

Also, Phil Hughes has a grade 3 ankle strain and will be out 4 to 6 weeks. So you're looking at the All-Star break at best.

Trade the bum he has Carl Pavano written all over him.

TRADE HIM WHILE YOU STILL CAN

;)

Oh man....this kid better get healthy so he can get some innings pitched under his belt.

What a disaster this season is....

Yanks have a little 5-run spurt in the 1st then are getting shutout for 4 innings.Go to sleep at the wheel.

ruse:

Change of pitcher. They only got the bp one for that brief, tantalizing moment.

Bruney the forgotten man !

THERE SHE IS!!

Diane

I was wondering if you'd show up to take a bow.

You should write a book on turning around the careers of swing happy domican 2basemen.

Well done.

;-)

I'll stop winking at everyone now...Sorry about that.

Michael,

Mere doodling at the margins. A success, but insignificant in the circs.

I had to take a couple of days off when I realized how little difference it made.

Now I may have to go away. Proctor is here.

Whoever posed the Jamesian question of why we are not using Mo when the game is on the line instead of (which never happens anyway) when there is a routinely defined 'save' situation, forgive me for forgetting who you are and allow me to add my voice to your cry!

[...'in the wilderness' goes without saying...]

I'm dying....

Diane

You just added yet another feather to the cap of one "Rick Keyes"

The echoing sentiment abounds...Rick Come Pick up this Cap before it flys away!!

DIANE
I believe it was RICK KEYES who posed the question in a Seinfeldian way.

Okay, so everyone who blasted Torre for bringing in Proctor instead of Bruney last night, what now? Bruney came in and threw hard, but gave up the two run dinger. This managing stuff ain't easy!

Look who's 4/4.

If the first guy gets on this inning and Marianno does not arrive immediately afterward than I'll jump with both feet onto the Fire TOrre wagon.

THERE'S A DAY OFF TOMORROW JOE

JIM A.

I can't argue ,it isn't easy BUT Bruney has been primarily a 1 inning pitcher. Why didn't JT just bring Proctor into start the 7th ? Just a question !
I have managerial aspirations.

And why I am still here looking at Farnsworth standing up on the field in a Yankees uniform, well after someone brought up the stewpot scenario? Anyone...

Nothing new w/ Farnsworth.
Rivera for 4 outs.

DIANE

LOL Help me out what's the
"stewpot scenario"?

Bunch of vegans, you ask me...

Ruse,
I bet it's because he reads this blog and he's afraid of what we'll say next. We have him so gun shy he doesn't know what to do!

JIM A.

LOL

Ruse:

That whole elaborate cannibal thing described on an earlier thread. Where the NYY became feared [with reason] as devourers of human flesh...

I thought Operation K probably had it all set up.

Where's the commitment nowadays?

And just so you know I don't blink at all, you with the Rockport/Birkenstock confusion -- Rockport is for wrinklies, Birkenstock for hippies.

Don't even ask how many pairs are in my closet, and of which brand...

A-Rod's cranking it up again. Maybe he cancelled his Post subscription.

DIANE

I have you pegged for a "Birks" kind of woman!

On my feet as we type.

AROD yells "I got it" 3b drops the ball, Gibbons is furious!

LOL... AROD causing controversy... The Blue Jay announcers are going ballistic.

Did you see ARod smiling afterward and say, "Phuck em"

Now the Blue Jay announcers are going through Arod's greatest hits... This is hysterical.

Now the Blue Jay announcers are going through Arod's greatest hits... This is hysterical.

OH THAT'S IT I HAVE JUST REAFFIRMED MY LOVE FOR ALEXANDER THE GREAT

IF HE DID WHAT THEY SAY HE DID IT'S OUTSTANDING!!!!

He yelled one word as he was running by the third baseman... and the guy backs off the popup.

Ah, that A-Rod ... :)

ESPN and all the Tabloids will run with it !

If he's going to let out his inner bad boy, might as well do it on the field where it might do some good...

The immorality of it all !
The Yankee season is now tainted !

Did you see that "finger wag" he gave that kid!!

Any guesses what may have been said to prompt A-Rod might wag?

I love it!!

Marianno got a SAVE !!

Jim A.

It's safe to watch the post game for once this week!!

So, A-ROD allegedly got caught cheating twice today. Once on the field (which I condone) and once off.

If the Yanks take off from here, we can attribute it to A-Rod taking a page out of the school yard.

Matsuzaka's overrated?

Another bad outing for Dice-k. He gave up 6 runs tonight. What Matsuzaka excuse this time? Last time It was stomach flu.

Funny game. I wanted Bruney in a big spot, I get that, and he gives up a 2R HR. Some wanted Mo in the 8th we got him and he did the job. Some said that Melky was overrated and he gets 2 important hits. Cano is not the same guy, which was mentioned today too, he goes 4-4. Just goes to show you how much any of us know. The Yankees need to keep it up.

Alex gets a nice 2 out RBI in the 9th and he taints that by yelling behind the fielder. So the papers will focus on that instead of the clutch hit. Let's see what that means for him/Yankees the next time they play the Jays. I can't wait to read the papers tomorrow to get the fielders side of the story. I thought it was pretty funny they could have still got Jorge out at 1B if they stayed with the ball.

Ty pitch OK and was able to work in and out of trouble. He needs to work on his mechanics from the stretch but I like him and his body language on the field. Let’s see who gets the 5th spot after Roger is in the rotation. Too bad it won’t be Hughes, he’s out for another 6 weeks.

Miguel, don't be name calling.

P.S. You should fire whoever is writing your material.

How nice to see JT FINALLY bring in Mo to get a little work, not to mention get a win for a change! Now if he would just listen to me on several other issues, we might actually get back in the WC race. Better yet, the Boss should hire me to replace him!

Rick, my good buddy, the NY media would have you for breakfast and you wouldn't make it to lunch. Although I do wish this would happen so someone would finally punch Mike Lupica in his little rat face.

I don't necessarily agree w/ what A-Rod did, I tell the little league kids I coach not to do that stuff and I don't expect the pros to do it.
A guy did that to me in my softball leauge a few seasons ago, I was playing short and a pop up was hit to me and he yelled "I got it!" right in my face as he ran by, I caught the ball and drilled him in the back with it, after he got off the ground I apologized and said he rattled me so much I forgot there were two outs....he was quiet the rest of the game.

I watched the game last night. The hitters took advantage of a young man in his 3/4 th start. The bats settled down and the 10 runs were a nice total for a change. I don't believe that we are out of the woods with the bats.

As far as Clippard, I like this kid's poise on the mound. He 's entertaining to watch but his location of his pitches was very lucky at times. I felt the Toronto was just missing the pitch. His pitch count was not overly positive but his mental focus was good. I like to see him get a few more starts at the #5 spot. We might be able to develope a starting pitcher. Farnsworth, there must be a team who needs this hulk of a man who can pitch one inning every other day and not complete it.
Arod, I'm sorry that was Bush League.

Someone placed some stats of the AAA & AA players. Andy Phillips is doing quite well with regular ar bats playing second base with 5 erors so far. Just a thought but Arod leaves us for whatever reason. How about cano to 3rd, Phillips to second. Hey Joe, Josh Phelps 3 hits in the last six at bats not bad just remember to look to your right and see this guy squeezing the saw dust out of the bat waiting to play.

How about Cano to an outfield position such as CF. Just some thoughts as I know the team will be retooled for 2008. No matter what this years outcome will be.

Visciano warmed up and didn't come in. The best move Joe made.

this has happened a few times so far this season -

yanks put a nice win together night before and have next day off.

anyone know when clemens will rejoin the Yankee team? media has told us over and over again that he'll pitch on Mon against white sox, but when will he be in dugout? I'll lose it if he shows up Monday, the day he's to pitch. Have him head to fenway with team today....put a little extra stink it that dirty boston air.

ARod is sad and pathetic....what a cheater and a liar....

LMT -

STF!! Yeah I said it what?

How many f**king times does 2nd baseman or SS fake a player into sliding thinking they have the ball and how many times does a catcher talk crap to a batter especailly when a pitch is thrown. This man is trying to energize this dead ass team. and once again the Pussies like Jeter and Damon strayed away from A-Rod Jeter is not a team man. Munson Would've supported ALex on camera and got at him behind scenes. Man is trying to put some life in this team , Jorge should've thanked him for making his f**king pop up a RBI

comments on Arod Bush League play

John Gibbons has nerve to say this:

"One thing you know about the Yankees, one of the reasons they're so respected, is they do things right," Gibbons said. "They always have. They have a lot of pride and a lot of class. They play the game hard. That's not Yankee pride right there. That's not the way they play. I thought it was bush league."

What A-Rod did may not have been a classy play, true, but it sure wasn't classy the way Jason Phillips barreled into Josh Phelps the other night. Nor was it classy when Gibbons fought Ted Lilly in the tunnel last year. Or when Gibbons challenged Shea Hillenbrand to a fight last summer.

Then there's the Toronto franchise itself. Remember in 2003, when the Blue Jays put out an ad in the papers featuring a Yankee hat covered with bird poop, and suggesting that Blue Jays' fans come out and boo Hideki Matsui, who was making his first appearance in Toronto. And when Joe Torre rightfully complained about the ad, calling it "tasteless," this was the response he received:

"We respect the Yankee tradition and we know they've been the dominant team recently," said Jim Bloom, the director of consumer marketing. "With that comes a sense of rivalry. When the show comes to town, they have to expect us to use that."

Nice to see The only way the Yankees can win now is by cheating. I wouldn't expect anything else from A-Fraud, he of The Slap.

Bush league team and Gibbons is spot on. Next time A-Fraud plays the Blue Jays, I seriously hope he get hit in the head and never is the same player again.

Although I think the media will overblow it, there is no question that A-Rod showed his lack of "class" once again last night. It's nothing new...he's done stuff like this before, and to be fair he's not the only guy to do that sort of stuff. I would guess it is not something he sets out to do intentionally, more of a impulse based on the play at hand. Not really a huge deal...but it is just another black mark for a guy who is constantly under the microscope.

No point in making excuses for the guy....it is what it is. On the other hand, there is little point in belaboring it either...but you know the media will.

Point is, we cant have it both ways....screaming wolf when it is a player of another team, and then finding excuses for a player who does this sort of thing when he happens to be on the team we are fans of. Two wrongs do not equate to one right. Of course if we are to hold players of A-Rods magnitude to certain levels of integrity, both on and off the playing field, and expect he conduct himself and his play with responsibility, then we should hold not only other players to the same litmus test...but MLB, the media, and even us fans to the same standards. As Jim pointed out, sometimes there are other condiderations that are far more important than a baseball game....such as our children. Isn't each of us responsible to everyone of them?

hahaha I like the a-rod play.

if you have ever watched a baseball game, or played one in any level, you would know that opposing players, fans of all types, and crowds in general scream that they too "have the ball". its part of baseball, part of sports overall. to me, to complain about it, as a major league player, is classless.

you know what toronto, next time we play eachother, scream your lungs out runing the bases, and maybe karma will bite Alex in the anouse.

it was nice to see some guys get their feathers ruffled on the yanks. and even though the cameras didnt see it, according to the NY Post, Giambi had a few words with the toronto catcher after the "ha!" event.

question is...can yanks carry some of that emotion into fenway?...maybe spark a few fires in that hostile park

Casual-

why is it that Boston will skip taveraz this weekend in order to pitch Wake. With Tavarez's performances this year against Yanks, you'd think Wake would be skipped over. Just curious

I see we have another idiot among us yet again.

You see...they come in all flavors..Sox and Yank chest beating knuckle draggers.

First moron, learn how to spell Yankees...second, please explain to the class how hitting ARod or anyone else in the head and invoking permanent damage, is ever justified, let alone over this incidence....now think about it before you respond. Clearly your comprehensive skills are stilted...so take your time. Use a dictionary if you need to.

What i HATE is how teams cry b*tch when soemthings happens but when they do things like

BEAMINGS.
Negative ADVERTISEMENT of an OPPOSING player

and other events they say it's baseball.

Now the yankees who is the LEAST team to retaliate when they do the SLIGHTEST thing they are called classless.

People mention children and etc. come on....

are you yelling children when batters is being beamed at?

Now were classless oooh ok well we will be classless together

LETS GO YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations Yankees on a great win.

Just a note, the Yankees would have won the game with a 7-5 score even if A-Rod had not made that distracting sound so it's really a moot point. Despite what ESPN says, the replays of A-Rod clearly show he either spoke just one word or made just one sound (and he clearly did not say "I got it, I got it" as ESPN reported in their typically classless style.) A-Rod states he said "Ha" used as a distraction and that's what he appears to be mouthing in the replay that was shown a million times. Plus, he was already past 3rd when the ball bounced so the outfielder should have caught that ball in any event.

A-Rod made a valid point in saying that players in the opposing dugout always yell "I got it, I got it" when he's going after a ball in foul territory. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The fact that this is done is common knowledge and no one calls it cheating then. What's the difference between the opposition doing it in the dugout and doing it on the field? It's the same thing and should be treated the same way. The reason it's not addressed is because there is no rule that says you can't shout from the dugout or on the field. Under these circumstances, A-Rod was acting within his rights and within the rules of the game.

Miguel,

It is a head-scratcher. I would rather have Tavares go than Wakes in light of recent performances between the two teams, but Tito said he wanted to realigned the rotation so the guys would be in their proper spots while there was a day off to allow that to happen. Typically when this happenes the number 5 guy is the one who gets moved back.

I guess.....??

I think with Boston being 13 1/2 games ahead of the Yankees in the standings, Francona can afford to put Wakefield in hoping he will be successful. Possibly he's looking to instill confidence in Wakes if he wins, and if he falls behind, he's got a great bullpen to take over for him. Francona has the luxury of resting players and experimenting right now. He's in a very enviable position, I must say (boo-hoo for us).

Great Point Lucy, Good morning all.

I guess I can say from my experience in professional sports what transpired was Very typical ...Trash talk trickery. what was very unusual was the complaint. why did they come complain? because just as the ANNOM said above NO ONE EXPECTS the yankees to respond this is the rep the yankee has in Baseball. Also like someone said Jeter should have been more protective of his troop and Recognizing that the man is trying to win, his comments could've been more supportive - he could have said My teammate said he said ha so I'll take his word. that shows support not the statement he said which can make people like me attack the Jeter / Arod story again even if it;s reaching it adds fuel.

Trikery is done regularly in sports a basket ball player bouncing the ball with the defender may say to the defender look out for the pick behind you causing the player to lose stance. Many slow running baseball players are tricked by the opposition with lines like you better hurry the throw is back in or pretend like there's a player behind the runner with the ball and would line up to pretend catch. trickery is common

You know I think his embracing a bad boy image might do wonders for Play-Rod. He's put a serious strain on himself trying to pretend to be Mr. CleanJeans, with all the tell-tale details pointing in a far sleazier direction [the gambling years, the Slap, the constant rumors of living at strip clubs even during the days when he used to take his wife with him, the Central Park beef-cake photo op, etc.].

He was never credible in the CleanJeans role and got constant criticism for being phony. So this week he lets it all hang out and he doesn't even apologize! Much better scenario! NYY already had a perfectly satisfactory CleanJeans guy, and has always known how to assimilate an open play-boy, from Mick to the Giambino. Mick's gone and the Giambino is about worn out. Casting calls were about to be held.

Never mind. That role appears to be filled. Guy looks like a natural for it, too.

He'll be happier. And so will the people who hate a phony.

I've played baseball/sotball at several levels and a player/runner who screams at an opposing player attempting to field a ball is bush league and should be grounds for runner's interference. I've seen it called on the playing field, where a runner has yelled to at an infielder on a popup to distract him, and the umpire called him out for interference.

Here's MLB rule 7.08 in part:

Here's MLB rule 7.08 in part:
(In particular, Read the last sentence)

runner interference with a batted ball
The runner must avoid a fielder who is attempting to field a batted ball. The fielder's protection begins the moment the ball is hit. That protection continues as he completes his initial play, up through the act of throwing. His protection ends if he misplays the batted ball and has to move more than a step and a reach to recover it. Umpire school manual.

Contact with the fielder is not necessary for interference to be called. If the runner does not avoid the fielder, the ball is dead and he is out. No other runners may advance beyond the base they last held at the time of the interference. Rule 7.09(L). If the batter-runner has not reached first base, runners remain at their bases held at the time-of-pitch. 7.08(b)

If a fielder is in the base path and attempting to field a batted ball, the runner must avoid him. The fielder is protected even if he is not in the path and then moves into the path. The runner has the responsibility to avoid the fielder wherever he may move to try to field the ball. If the runner does not avoid the fielder, it is interference whether the act was intentional or not. 7.08(b).

"7. If a fielder is not in the base path, the runner is considered to have avoided the fielder, if the runner stays in the path. Running in the base path in front of a fielder, who is not in the path, is NOT interference. The runner has a right to the path when the fielder is not in the path. However, the runner must simply run in the path. If he does something while in the path that, in the umpire’s judgment, was intent to hinder or interfere with the fielder, he may be called out even while in the path or after having avoided the fielder."

Casual Observer, bite me. The Typo Police is out and in full force, everybody!!! Look out!!!

Yankees and their fans suck!!!!

Question:

Is it bush league to "deke" a runner when one is playing in the outfield...or infield, for that matter?

Lathem-

I could care less what softball/minor league ball/ baseball /tee ball leagues you have played in. this is the MAJOR league. none higher. the umps last night saw nothing wrong with it.

whatever league u play in must have muzzles on all fans, players and everyone in between. to think in all your experience with a bat and ball, you never heard a player, no matter what dugout he/she is in, have screamed, shouted or yelled a distracting call to fool with opposing player?

just another media frenzy with yanks, in specific with Alex, to run with. looks like you are following right along.

Bite you???

Good Heavens no...I cant stand grease.

Miguel,

In all honesty...if it had been say...Manny.. who did that against the Yanks...how would you feel?

I sure wish the Yanks were classy like Varitek when he went after A-Rod WHILE WEARING HIS MASK.

Sure showed his Boston Manhood on that play.

And TurnTwo:
“just because other players may do it or other distractions similar to it doesnt make it right.”

Right. So no more plowing into catchers (or first) by anyone, or throwing at hitters, or faking the catch to force a slide, or stealing signs, or doing a Reyes off third to force a balk …

Please. This is what separates the men from the boys, or the career minor leaguers from the veterans.

How many times do we have to say: It was A-ROD, and IT WORKED. Otherwise we are posting about something else, like the big Boston series coming up.

And if they throw at A-Rod in July, so be it. We can throw right back.

Those rules state nothing about talking, If so many runners would be out or the 1b when covering the runner much trach talk is done in that situation where the 1b may say numerous things to distract the runner. or at 2nd when a ball is hit and it could be a triple but the inf, dupe the runner into thinking the ball is there causing a premature slide and delaying a possible advance to the next base

ahhh....I was waiting for you,

Idiot Sox fan....meet moron Yan fan. You two have a lot in common....

Knowledge, those were excellent examples. How many times does the catcher make comments to the batter? How about the good-old tried-and-true hidden ball trick done by Little League and Major League players alike? Could you imagine a 300 pound football player complaining that some meanie distracted him by saying "Ha" and claiming that it's just not fair (sniff-sniff)? These ridiculous complaints are extremely sissy-istic in nature, in my book.

Latham Joe, the rules you quoted appear to be totally irrelevant to the issue at hand. Please pinpoint the EXACT sentence that applies to a situation where a runner makes a sound on the field and it's considered interference. I just didn't see it. Whether it's Bush League or brilliant appears to be merely a matter of opinion.

he wore his amsk and still got slammed, damm arod is strong

Casual-

just another case of manny being manny.

if it were..say...youk or lowell or another sox player, id be ticked that alex, or jeter, or cano, couldn't make the play as a major leaguer. its baseball. ive obviously never played at the major league level, but come on. he screamed "ha" prior to getting to third. he didnt scream "i got it, i got it".

like i said, just another media firestorm

I tend to agree with you Miguel

Wow,

Talk about a tempest in a teapot!

Casual, you're begging for this response. They would say it's just Manny being Manny. Well, this is just A-Rod being A-Rod -- good, bad or indifferent.

Casual:
Personally, I think "deking a runner" is bush because it can lead to injury. But you're talking "apples to oranges" since deking a runner is not interference with an attempt to field a batted ball and there is nothing in MLB rules covering it.

Miguel:
Fans can scream all they want, but there is a code with players that things like that are not done to opposing players. If you've ever played at any level, you might realize that. BTW, did you ever have a softball with the imprint of "Jim A" bounce of your back???
