The Yankees have told sore-legged Johnny Damon to put his feet up for a while – literally. But he’s not going on the disabled list.
Damon said part of the treatment for his cramping calves is to sit with his legs elevated, something he was able to do as he didn't start yesterday’s game against the Angels.
The Yankees had Bobby Abreu in the leadoff spot and Melky Cabrera in centerfield, an alignment that may continue for a few days. Damon is not expected to start today’s series finale and is questionable for the three games starting Monday on Toronto’s artificial turf.
Damon, who looked slow in the outfield and left Friday night’s game after 6½ innings due to cramping, said about not going on the DL: “It’s not taking 15 days. I told them it’s not 10. It won’t even be five.”
Brave words from a man who has never spent a day on the DL. But Damon, 33, has also never been totally healthy in his two seasons with the Yankees; last year he battled shoulder and foot woes. This year it’s been his legs. He thought he was over the cramping until it resurfaced on Friday.
“I was as surprised as anyone,” he said. “When I was out there I couldn’t move as crisp as I wanted to and felt the cramping. I was upset.”
Damon will be available as a pinch hitter during his absence from the lineup. It’s all he can do and it’s killing him.
“I would still go through a wall,” he said. “If I could get to that wall.”
******
Manager Joe Torre has juggled the starting rotation for the Toronto series to separate rookies Tyler Clippard and Matt DeSalvo. DeSalvo, who had a disastrous relief appearance on Friday, will start Monday. Andy Pettitte will go Tuesday and Clippard Wednesday. Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina and Pettitte are lined up for the Red Sox next weekend . . . Phil Hughes, who is recovering from a pulled hamstring, had an MRI on Friday after twisting his ankle during a drill. “I haven’t been told anything other than it may a little more than a couple days,” Torre said. “It’s just bad luck for him and bad luck for us.”

This is the 700th entry on the Yankees blog since its inception last season. That's 700 times Jim, Kat, Bob and myself have posted here. I'm working on a breakdown of exactly how many times each of us have posted. I'll have that later in chart form. Any guesses?

Not only are we playing the premiere "Yankee Killers" but it's a "DAY GAME"!!
No chance...With another idiotic day-game tomorrow I think we may looking at a "sweep".
I'm all for the idea of the "day-game" it's nice for "the children"-but not our team. This team can't win under natural sunlight.
...yes I know how stupid that sounds but I'm almost half-serious at this point.
I can't believe my eyes.
The Angels catcher has a monster arm!!
Uh,
I'm talking to myself.
Good afternoon boys and girls. Just stopping by quickly to wish all a happy Memorial Day! Hope you all remembered someone who made the sacrifice for our benefit today. Even though things are tough in Yankee world, there are things out there a lot tougher.
PTRS just because noone is responding doesnt mean no one is listening. Blog on.
Look I'll be the first one to admit that Abreu should be on the next bus...$hit I'll drive it myself but that call was horse$hit!!
Point-Lucy.
Gentlemen...
Well, the sins of the past are finally catching up with the Yanks. It was inevitable really. You can't just pile on crap after crap and not eventually feel the consequences.
The Yanks are DOA this year... I don't see any way they will salvage this season. They are 5 games below .500 and in all likelihood 11.5 games behind the Sox and 8 back of the WC.
I'm calling it now... Yanks 2007 season time of death - 4:04pm 5/26/07
Another quality start from Wang. His Line today 8 innings ip 3 runs, and 6k.. Yankees Offense continues to be awful.
Ever since Giambi encountered the heel problem and basically stopped hitting, the offense has been sputtering. We need a good right handed "stick" with pop, that can play 1st base. Another option is to DL Giambi, play Phelps full-time at 1st, and just get a right handed bat with pop to DH. Seattle would love to unload Sexson with the emergence of Broussard. The Yanks should continue to run the "young guns" out there, whether it be as starters or in relief. The pitching on the whole, has been decent to good, and improving. I would send Mussina to the "pen" when we have enough arms to cover his spot in the rotation.
Nudge: The Yankees are in a rough spot and it appears no answers to the problems are forth coming. But you brought on a very good point about the sacrifices of our soldiers past and present and their families. You see or read about their stories and pain and this game of baseball which we love becomes a non issue. Who cares about wins and losses when young men and woman are sacrificing for us.
Everybody remember Memorial Day and its true meaning. Its not apple pie, hot dogs and baseball.
Roy
Sexson?
With all due respect, and you "know" I respect both: You and the "pack leader" You guys have lost your minds with this "Sexson proposition."
Please explain how this giant "ogre" of a man who NEVER gets on "base," and is a notorious "strike out machine"...is going to help this "team" that you admit is "sputtering" offensively?
Just cause he may be an option doesn't make him the right option I don't have to tell you this. I'm just curious.
Maybe you guys know something I don't cause on "paper" he'd be a "disaster."
HAPPY "RAD"
I would like to echo the sentiments regarding the true meaning of Memorial Day. Like the saying goes. If you can read this thank a teacher, if you can read it in English thank a veteran. Our team is down and i think out. But our country is still great and i hope that we all recognize the sacrifices that our soldiers have made and continue to make so that we can be free!!
Take care and God Bless the USA
For all you guys wanting Sexson or Phelps or Slelley Duncan or Andy Phillips:
There have been a couple reports that Texas will shop Mark Teixeira. He's 27 (!) and over the last 3 full seasons averaged 38 HR and 122 RBI. A switch-hitter, to boot. We should offer a package of young players to get this young impact guy, even if we have to overpay. Say Bruney, Clippard, Chase Wright and Phelps or Minty (or both).
Adding any of the other 1B names would just be rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. We need a BIG deal.
I called Bobby Abreu after the game. Here's what he had to say:
"Hey, I don't have to swing the bat. My 16 mill is in the bank, man! Joe Torre is unfair. Day game after a long night game - he gives Damon the day off but I have to play? You don't think my calves are crampy? Wil Nieves shags fly balls in BP, he could play RF once in awhile. You know, I had to cut down on the greenies and that's not fair either. Trade me to LA or SD, I liked the NL better, plus I like the sunshine."
Boston 10 Angels 1, Boston 8 Angels 0. Boston 7 Angels 2
Here is my point. I love how the Angels always go up to fenway and lay an egg no matter who is on the mound for the Angels or Redsox. But when the schedule brings the Angels to Yankee Stadium its like the angels sons and daughters are being held hostage by the Yankees and the Angels play us do or die, Im just sick of it. We lost to this team in 2002 and 2005 Boston swept them in 2004 And dont care me a Redsox fan because this is the truth.
Casey Kotchman was 2 for 12 against the Redosox at Fenway, Against us he makes every single tough play goes 3-3
The entire angel lineup did squat at fenway to make a long story but they show up to play the Yankees simple amazing and frustrating
I would have included F-worth, Myers and Vizcai-oh-no in the my Teixeira package above, but neither Texas nor anyone else wants them.
Positive and Negatives
Positives:
Jeter, A-Rod, Posada, Cano, Mientkiewicz, Pettitte, Bruney, Proctor, (8)
Non-Factors:
Wang, Matsui, DeSalvo, Clippard, Myers, Villone, Phelps, Rivera (Barely makes this group) (7)
Total Negatives:
Abreu, Damon, Cabrera, Cairo, Mussina, Pavano, Farnsworth, Giambi, Nieves, Visciano (10)
When 40 % of you team is failing to produce, it makes you a .500 team, and as Parcells said "You are what you are". We're a 500 team at best.

Thank you so much for your wonderful insight into the great matter!
Did you come up w/ that all on your own or did you get some help?
It figures when the Angels went to Fenway early in the season they were on a losing streak (with a 1-8 record in games before, during and after). Angels been having a winning record since then, not helping the Yankees at all. Ain't nothing working right this year I suppose.
Ruse:
I'm not at the top of my game today. Calves are crampy. Be sharper tomorrow, unless I roll an ankle getting out of bed. I like to wake up at the crack of noon.
PHUCKER-
Last year Sexson hit .264 with 34HR and 107RBI, after getting off to a horrendous start much like this year. I have no objection to getting "Tex", but I believe that is a "pipe dream". The rookie Duncan is also a good option, but currently an unknown quantity at the major league level. We gotta do something to "jump start" that offense. Giambi in his current physical condition is not helping the Yankee offense or your BBB Fantasy Team.
Roy
LOL!!
YEAH DONT REMIND ME
What is with the umps atthe stadium, it is one bad call
after the other, Abrau is called out looking, the ball was in the opposite batters box, Posoda threw out a Mariner steeling second base by three feet and was called safe, Jeter was called out on 2 pitches that where way outside.
Sexson ? The guys has more holes in his swing than swiss cheese.
If Yanks need to get righthanded they would be better off going after players like
Austin Kearns RF
Matt Murton RF LF
Mark Teahen 3rd RF
Xavier Nady 1B RF
good hitters that wouldn't cost the Yanks an arm and leg and might be available for relief pitching and a prospect.
Everytime I think of what Carlos Beltran is doing for the Mets I curse Cashman.
This team is a far cry from the championship teams of past. There defense is terrible. There middle relief is up and down and they cannot produce a run when needed. This team is sitting on the homerun ball. When we hit it we win and when we don't we lose. Also they strikeout way to much and that is unacceptable with runners on. In years past they were able to put the ball in play with runners on,now it seems like they cannot even do that. You can tell Yankees fans lost some faith when you see the stadium clear out by the 7th inning in a 2 run ball game. Giambi needs to go fast. That would be a start in the right direction. With the exception of Jeter,Jorge,Andy and Mo there are no other true Yankees on this team. It is sad when you look back and see in the championship years mostly every guy on the team was loved by fans and no matter how much we were down we found a way to mount a comeback. Now it is filled with hate toward some and guys who throw in the towel in the 7th inning..I hope this team can turn things around because these problems aren't gonna fix themseleves.
RUSE-
Is Teahen available? I think he is a "key" player that KC is building around. If available, I would go after him immediately. I just think that we could get Sexson for almost nothing. I don't believe he has more than a yr. left on his current deal with Seatle. No matter what you think of his swing, he ultimately does put up very good numbers. We gotta do something quickly, or we will soon be auditioning our minor league players for next year.
RUse
My friend...It's not just Beltran.
But "what's done is done" i guess.
Speaking of Beltran....and at the risk of high treason I must say that I've been casually watching the "other" new york team. I hate to state the obvious or add to the frustration but has anyone else noticed how bad we truly are in comparison?
I watch these games and somebody whether it be some "journey man" or rookie etc somehow comes up huge and right when it's necessary.
I THINK I'll stop now I'm probably just making it worse but Ruse I agree Cashman is on my S list
and as a result am finding more I'm finding disturbing ways to torture myself.
hah that torture part was not intentional
ROY
Teahen bats Left ,my mistake.
MICHAEL
Whenever I see "El Duque"
toss another 6 scoreless innings it makes me wonder why the Yanks didn't resign him.
AJ
as much as Giambi needs to go it ain't gonna happen unless he's suspended from MLB.He's guaranteed thru 2008 w/ a 5 million buyout on his 2009 option. How are the Yanks going to unload 40 million ? Who's dumb enough to eat a portionof his contract when he's presently using orthotics to help him stay on his feet ? Find a righthanded power hitter to compliment AROD .Or send a bunch of pitching prospects to Texas for Tex.
Actually Parcells said "You are what your record says you are"
Get it straight rocket boy
Pathetic
Murderer's Row plus Cano?
More like Death row plus Cano
you think torre feels that noose around his neck tightening?
Orlando Cabrera rips Yankees fans
http://www.latimes.com/sports/baseball/mlb...2&cset=true
The New York Yankees might have the most fans, but they don't have the best fans. So says Angels shortstop Orlando Cabrera.
"They don't appreciate good baseball," he said. "They just appreciate the Yankees beating up on everybody."
Cabrera played in Boston, another city with a loud and loyal fan base, before joining the Angels. He gives Red Sox and Angels fans high marks for supporting the home team through tough times and applauding great plays by the visiting team.
"In Boston, they admire baseball," Cabrera said. "In Anaheim, those fans are some of the best in baseball. They know you care there. They know you can't do it every day. I appreciate that.
"These people here, they're mean. And they're really mean to the other team."
Cabrera said the hostility in the stands has increased this season, with the Yankees below .500.
"When we came here last year, they were in first place, so it was OK," he said. "Now they're just looking for an excuse."
He is not bothered, he says, by whatever language Yankees fans direct his way.
"When people say something, they only motivate me," he said. "They're bad losers."
bill.shaikin@latimes.com
"These people here, they're mean. And they're really mean to the other team."
Cabrera Who?
Orlando, Think before you say something stupid.Yankees Fans like myself are disgusted because How's Angels had winning record against Yankees and had their number
I love how Angels and their players are cocky.. Orlando remember your just visiting player and this is not your home.. Orlando, Who do you think you are? Do you really think your a great player? Your scrub, you ain't Jeter.
Orlando Shut F*ck up and play godd*mn game.
yankee fans.
regarding these comments, i actually think our fans have been extra patient this year. players need to remember that this ain't kansas city. we put a 200 million dollar team out there, and we deserve to expect results (plus yankee fans pay the most for tickets).
i bet it's great to be a brewers fan, when every positive thing is a huge surprise, and it's true we have been spoiled by an owner who is hell bent on winning and sets the bar at championship or bust.
however, i think the reason the fans are quickly running out of patience with the 2007 yankees isn't solely due to the win-loss record, but what is perceived as lack of effort and commitment by some players, and the huge sums of money some players make (the same players actually) compared to the results and the excuses.
i wrote here a month ago that abreu should be booed out of town, and only yesterday he actually began getting the treatment he deserves.
on that note, i find the whining about the 3rd strike pathetic. is there a SINGLE yankee fan out there who believes that had the count gone 2-2 abreu would have produced a hit? i didn't think so.
it's a known medical axiom that when a baby is crying it's a good sign - when a baby goes quiet and numb, that's when you need to start worrying.
same with fans. it is our responsibility to demand performance and desire from our team. when fans become too forgiving and accepting they turn disinterested, and then what you have on your hands is the knicks.
yes, sometimes we lose perspective, like booing jeter of all people a few years ago when he was slumping, but the bottom line is this - if you play in new york, you better be ready to give it all out every single day, like oneil, bernie, jeter, andy, cone, tino etc.
if you can't - you don't belong here and you'll hear it from the fans.
This team is very similar to the 2006 Braves. We're taking a step back this season and will rebound quite nicely next season and beyond.
A consecutive playoff streak is going to end at some point or another. It happens to every team- Braves, Red Sox, and Angels all didn't make the playoffs last year and will all probably make it this year.
I expect this team to find its groove but it will be too late. We'll finish with 81-88 wins.
Torre should be and will be gone once the season is over. I expect Cashman gone as well.
How long is Cashman going to do nothing to upgrade this team? "The Boss" put him on "the big hook", which is basically "on notice", and he does absolutely nada. The pitching on this team is not the "major" problem, it's the hitting. Hitters can be obtained at any time. If money is the issue, the Yanks could DL Damon and bring up the 27yr. old Duncan, or some other minor leaguer. This would at least inject some "energy" into the lineup and the team as a whole. If Cashman goes, then Torre should immediately follow, as he is only at the helm due to Cashman's insistence last Oct. A new GM and new Mgr. would also breath life into this team. It is definitely time to "shake things up". The water is rising, and nobody seems to know how to swim.
As a Red Sox fan , I must admit it is interesting to see how Yankee fans handle any sort of letdown by your team. Believe me when I tell you we have had our share of pain over the years, so I can sympathize with you. You need to remember how much you have already seen your team win and accept that it can't continue forever. The game / business of baseball has changed forever. No longer will it be the team with the deepest pockets automatically makes the playoffs. Cashman will rebuild the Yankees with draft picks and good scouting instead of big checks and aging stars. Steinbrenner has made his final move of consequence with the "rental" of Clemens. After that fails at the cost of a 1 mil or so per start, he will walk away

Thanks Johnny for destroying Yankees Franchise....Your washed up and use Yankees money for your evil deeds. Somewhere Dark room, Theo and Lucchino are laughing . I wish Cashman and Yankees never sign you the first place.... I have to wait two more years until contract runs out...
I think Damon's stats was fluke last year.. Damon's is the same person who were laughing in Yankees dugout when Yankees are losing Tigers last year. This year, He announces that Yankees are best team in baseball..The Redsox benefited from it when Yankees sign Damon..
Orlando Cabrera is a f**king joke. This moron has only played with winning teams, especially a winning Boston. This idiot hasn't played on teams where losing fans can be cruel (it's a known fact Boston is one of the WORST -- if not THE WORST). You just wait, Cabrera because your time will come soon. You opened your filthy mouth, and it will come back to haunt you, you f**cking fool.
So far Theo has passed on Damon, Pedro, and Schilling's extension.
So far so good , I would say
Damon has a ton of miles on those tires, so essentially you replaced one worn out guy for another.....better off with Bernie and the cash
With the way Damon is feeling and the "production" of Melky and Bobby it is time to beg Bernie to come back. Suck it up Cash and get him back.
Not only could he provide a spark but he can be a neutalizer to lefty pitching in the later innnings coming off the Bench.
Yes, I hate Damon guts since He's Former Redsox.. Redsox use the Yankees again by fooling them to sign him.. Yankees aren't going anywhere until Damon's off this f*cking team.
Advice to Cashman, Don't sign Curt Schilling or I will stop watching Yankees.

is that the solution to beg for a 38 year old to come back?? I can understand one of Griffey's abilities but bernie? why not asked for steve finley ? and what player is going to suffer if bernie comes? let me guess Clippard right?
orlando played in Montreal ,,, nuff said is he an idiot for his opinion?
This song dedicated Yankees and their fans.. The song it's called Five for fighting - 100 years . Yankees will not win World Series championship in next hundred years this century.

Good Morning ,
after hearing the cashman rumors I must say this... As much as BC may ahve failed and perhaps should step down the Boss is too stubborn to replace him with the best person for the Job a promotion for the SUPER SCOUT, As much as Gene is looked as a genius to The FANS and is locked down in a contract not to honor him but so that other teams cannot obtain him . The relationship between the Two is stable but not great would George really appreciate if Gene comes back and restores strength in Yankee camp?? I doubt it meaning that the exodus of BC may lead to further dismay of the Yankees if the other GM is not Gene. I can see Gene making Melido Perez type trades with some of these players. The most common sense trade now is to trade Bobby A to a contender who either is tasting playoff's for the first time in awhile and want to shore up their offence and would hope Bobby would perform like last year when changed teams and if he flops they will let him walk.
Mil , Arizonia plays a big part maybe even the mets with the yankees asking for Endy
then Gene will make sure in our draft selection that the right talent is picked. capatilize in the foriegn market he may have had hindsight into Igwa but I doubt he was very involved in the choice.
Bring back Gene if they feel BC has to go.
Lucky for me a high-demand weekend has limited my exposure to the debacle. I haven't watched pre- or post-game shows and though I keep the games on 'in the background' I've had a lot of distractions. And a good thing. As I said before, it depresses me profoundly to see Posada and Jeter vainly trying to carry a gang of slugs on their backs. It looks like this season will be a 'waste' of their terrific play judged in terms of team results, and neither of them seems to be really cheered up by personal stats. It gives me a renewed appreciation of the days when Mattingly labored in vain to try to carry a losing team over the line.
Most of the time watching this team makes me feel like a rubbernecker at a gory accident scene.
It's funny I keep hearing Sheffields comment about Abreu "not being him" ring in my ears.As Sheffields average continues to slowly climb and his impact on Magglio Ordonez one would be led to believe the Yanks traded the wrong guy.I know I know hindsight is always 20-20.
ruse,
sheff is a player on the decline chronologically, although his tough approach and strong bat are sorely missed, so you can justify the idea of the trade (plus who would actually be dumb enough to take abreu? cashman cannot trade with himself...)
however, and it's a HUGE however, getting back a PRE-INJURED player headed to tommy john surgery goes so far beyond stupid it disappears behind the horizon.
i bet all around the league when cashman calls they have a "christmas is early" alert, and the GM quickly rounds up all the injured and over the hill players to shovel onto the yanks' wheel barrel.
Did anyone else read Posada's reaction when asked what he thought of Jeter's plan to own a team after he retires? Posada said he was planning to go in with him on it.
What a treat we get to watch Mussina pitch today!
BP fastballs ? Hopefully everything will be synchronized fastball, sun ,stars, resin bag, catcher, etc.
ruse i feel the same exact way about Sheff and you can retract my post's i felt funny about that trade. but many people attack me and said option and trade picks and abreau blah blah blah. we was robbed bambozzled. Detroit jumped KNOWING they trading a MAYBE . yes the jury is out on sanchez but the reality is he may of may not be the same player. Sheff , I can almost guarrantee our record would not be what it is now. Now if one is to say well this trade is for the future then we must STF and accept this season as it is and hope for Rebuilding our Future.
people will say ohh he is a cancer . really ?? what is detroits record?????????????????????????????????????????????
GIL
I can't agree with you more! I never in my many years of following MLB have I heard of a GM trading for damaged goods.Pathetic.
Anonymous:
Bad example. Cabrera played in Montreal, a country that worships hockey and could care less about baseball. Montreal Expos no longer exist because fans weren't showing up for games. You think Expos fans were passionate about their team and baseball? They weren't at all. Cabrera's arrogance is just plain classless and stupid. Only classless idiots make nasty comments about fans from other teams especially when he doesn't have enough experience to back his comments.
In other news, the magic number is 105.
Who would have believed that the Yankees would be 5 games under .500 on Memorial Day ?
So...is it my imagination or is clueless Joe just going through the motions begging to be fired. How else can you explain the nonsensical moves he has been making. Maybe when we see him in the dugout with his head down he is secretly wishing that Don Zimmer - the real genius behind the Yankee success during the late 90s - would magically appear and tell him what to do. Because Torre really has no idea what he is doing. It is hard to believe that someone who has been in baseball for almost 50 years would be so bad on baseball strategy and when to make pitching moves. Now granted the Yanks have had injuries this year which certainly accounts for some of their performance. But would it kill comatose Joe to actually show some fire and passion and try to motivate the team. I don't know about the rest of the fans but I'm done following the Yankees until Torre is gone.
Pathetic !!! Get ready for some booming headlines on the back pages of the tabloids at any time.
The Yankees blew an opportunity to make a statement with the Mets, Boston, and the Angels series and flopped at it. Going 3 out of 9 just won't cut it.
This team is a mirror of it's manager ....lifeless with no fire whatsoever.
Fire sale anybody ????
Not out of the question to see Gene "Stick" Michael as GM at least through the end of this season. If Girardi is not tapped or goes thumbs down on the manager's job, then Larry Bowa will light a fire under some asses that need it.
go yanks... third place is still a possibility
haha at least the yanks can count on proctor
for the first time the Yankees will be a "seller" at the trade deadline.
But everyone they want to "sell" is far overpriced, so they will have to once again pay for someone to play elsewhere.
So do you think A-Rod will hang around after this year........
