Sad News for Andy Phillips

Andy Phillips has left the team to be with his family in Alabama after his mother was involved in a serious car accident yesterday, the team said. "He'll have as long as he needs," Joe Torre said. "We all hope and pray everything will be okay. But it's pretty serious right now." Unfortunately for Phillips, this is the second straight spring training he is dealing with a family health issue; last year at this time his wife was at home fighting a battle with a rare form of cancer related to a lost pregnancy.

May God Bless Andy and his Mom.

Rick: Weren't you just in Alabama? Hmmmm...first Abreu, now Phillips.

Bern Baby Bern! They will yearn for the Bern before I am through. And, I haven't even had to use the MACHETE yet!

Rick,
"Yearn For The Bern!" I'm printing up the t-shirts now, we'll be rich!
They will be similar to the shirts I printed up while I was in the Navy, shortly after my ship pulled out of the Phillipines I made some shirts that read "Learn From The Burn!" (the alternate shirt said "I Clean Girl is a Damned Lie!"

you crack me up rick!!!

How come Hughes doesn't have sinker like Wang and Ohlendorf at mid-90's?

Do you think Phil can learn a sinker while pitching in scranton?

anonymous ,anonymous.God did not create pitchers in your image! Hughes has dynamite stuff .God does not tinker w/ greatness!Behold!

Larry M. :Speaking of pizza ,did you ever have Pepe's pizza in New Haven,Ct ?

Pizza, what's that? I live in Virginia now, home of the worst pizza in the world. Iraq has better pizza than Virginia. Whenever I visit my family in NY, I do the following: Stop for pizza as a snack, hit a deli for lunch (a Choc. egg cream to drink), Italian for dinner and cannoli for dessert. After puking, await bagels for breakfast.
I see my family for about 15 mins, which is usually enough, I eat for 30 hours then hit the turnpike and head home.
I LOVE NY!

Ok,
I need four more guys for the league that I have along with seven others. If anyone is interested, just e-mail me at borichulo09@aol.com...theres four spots available, so the first four to e-mail me will get those spots. Thanks.

NY has the best pizza in the world. Here in Boston there is some decent pizza, but only here and there.

In NY almost every mom and pop pizzeria has absolutely great pizza.

The worst pizza I ever had, Jim A., and everyone, was in Knoxville, TN. It was actually a toasted slice of Wonder Bread with a splash of ketchup and a slice of Velveeta cheese-food (can't even be called cheese). They called it Eye-talian pizza. Yeccch!

Since I am on this thread best wishes out to Andy Phillips and his family, especially for his mom.

First I would like to wish Andy's mom a speedy recovery.

Second to speak of the best pizza. I think it
is @ Original's Pizza in Brooklyn. Riceballs and a slice. Can't go wrong. The only thing good in Florida I ever ate was Pollo Tropical. But then I found out they have one in North Bergen,NJ. The Chinese food sucks there and so does any Italian food. I will take the bad weather in NY anyday just to have the food rather than living in paradise everyday and the food sucks.

By the way Rick I still think Matsui should DH and I have not changed my mind after todays catch.

I'm not big on Phillips, but the guy has had monumental pressures to deal with the last couple years. I will keep his MOM in my thoughts and prayers.
Forget your NEW YORK pizza. I'll take an IN-N-OUT Double Double burger any day. Great taste, great aroma, and great price. Throw in an order of fries, and you are in Heaven.

Dave

FYI - You can run the league with less than 12. The only key is that you have to have an even number of teams. Hope this helps.

AJ

You can think it all you want. But, it's not going to happen, except on an occassional day off from the field thing.
Matsui's culture has this thing about "saving face" and the Yanks aren't going to make him a fulltime DH. Won't happen!

ruse, Ca. the closest that I came to New Haven, Ct. was on the train, heading toward NY. As far as food, Italian food in my neck of woods in Fla. is mediocre but the pizza is getting much better as more Italian Northeasterners head down here.

My wife and I went back to NY last September. I had a food orgy. Hitting all of my favorite places. It was similar to a cruise without the boat.

I have sample pizza in Columbia SC while a guest of our gov't at Ft. Jackson (tank hill resident). Thou, its been many years. I know that I was in the wrong place when forks and knives come out to eat pizza. No way will I eat pizza with a fork and knife. Its got to be folded.

I miss NY for the food and Manhattan on occassion but the hustle gets to you after awhile. Its nice to BS with you guys and how a comment about pizza went to this conversation.

Ahh, a "Yearn For the Bern" tee shirt, some good pizza, and the Yanks playing ball again. It doesn't get any better than this!

Rick; I must admit that your campaign for Bernie has some merits as injuries and family issues affect players but Bernie should have taken the oppt. to show his stuff. I'm not on your side of the page on his playing but some pizza and cold beer would be a nice compliment to the discussion.

Larry M

All I ever pushed for was for Bernie to be the 25th man on this team. Before this season is over, they are going to wish he was here.

I too wished he would have showed up on the invite, but I also understand why he didn't.

IF we go limping into October with Giambi or an OF down (like now with Abreu), I would much rather have the playoff seasoned Bernie around as a backup than some AAA kid or some mediocre journeyman from another team.

Rick,
I understand, but for those here who actually wanted to play (Ibelieve there were more), just saying theres slots open. But thanks for the info though buddy.

Best wishes to Andy and his family.

As for the pizza - Modern Pizza in New Haven is the best.

NY is the leader in:
Pizza
Deli's
Bakeries
Diners
Sports teams

I was in California for a few years and went into a pizza place, looked at the menu and said to the young girl at the counter "I'll take a large sausage and mushroom pie, please'. She said, I'm sorry we don't have pies. I looked at the menu again and said you don't have pies? you only sell by the slice? She said "we only have pizza here" at this point the owner of the place came from the back room laughing and said "you must be from back east" with a thick NY accent. We had a good laugh, a decent attempt at pizza (he blamed the water) and traded food stories like we're doing.

On Bernie: I'm disappointed that he seems to have been acting like a child by not returning Torre's calls but calls Jeter back. If you can't tell Torre "thanks, but no thanks" then maybe it is time to move on. While I'll never forget what Bernie did for the Yanks, I'll also keep in mind that the man made over $100 Million dollars in his career and damn near went to the Red Sox in '98.
It's all good though, I still love you Bernie!

I sense a NY "provincialism" when it comes to pizza. No one is arguing that NY doesn't have great pizza, but Chicago has great pizza, and Jim if you evaluate Pizza by having one(1) oddball experience in California ,which is the most populated state in the union, then I'm sorry you really haven't had the real California pizza experience, the Bay Area is where I live and fortunately we have everything from NY,Chicago, deepdish to gourmet -styled pizza and it rivals the best pizza in the world...and actually anything Italian for that matter...

Jim : and that goes for bakeries too, unbelievable bakeries...I grew up in the NY area and have traveled a bit the Parisians and Viennese would also take "umbrage" at the Bakery and Deli comment."coleader".,,back to the ballyard.

Ruse,
I lived in California for 4 years and sampled plenty of pizza and I can say without hesitation that NY is by far the better of the two, in my opinion. I do not consider anything with fruit on it a pizza.
I did not say NY had the best baked goods in the world, just (again, in my opinion) the US. I should've made that clear. I travel extensively for work including spending a total of about a month in Amsterdam; Vienna Austria; Germany; South America and Japan and the bread in Europe is to me, the best in the world!

To Jim A: Bread in Europe is fabulous. You can make a meal out of it with some vino. As far as pastries, I say the Parisians got the award. I have not traveled in North Europe so my choices maybe one sighted.

Baseball and food not much missing that can be printed but a 27th ring would fit nicely.

Jim A: I forgot all pizza in California is served with pineapple ! I'm an idiot !

Ruse,
I didn't say all the pizza I had in California had fruit on it, but even one is sacrilege.
I just found that most places made some very common mistakes with pizza: They under cook the dough and slather on way too much sauce and cheese. When your pizza folds, it should stay...ahem..erect for lack of a better word, not droop down with the cheese sliding off.
Okay, last thought on this subject: I'm not saying ALL the pizza in Cali is bad, what I'm trying to say is that it's a lot harder to find good pizza in Cali than it is in NY. It's quite easy to find good pizza in NY, more so than anywhere else, in my opinion with the caveat that I haven't been to every city on this earth, including New Haven, CT.
We still friends buddy?

My thoughts and prayers are with Andy Phillips and his family. I wish his mom a full and speedy recovery.
