Bobby Abreu had a day off yesterday, when Joe Torre said he plans to keep hitting Abreu third this season. Abreu said this morning, though, that he takes it as a compliment to hit third in this lineup.
"It makes me feel good," Abreu said, though he said anywhere in this lineup is a nice spot to hit.
Chien-Ming Wang (hamstring) said he is feeling better day by day.
Pitching coach Ron Guidry, responding to the injuries to his starting rotation, said: "I think what I'm going to do is not put a No. 1 starter. I'm not putting a No. 1 starter because it's not going good."

Chip : Do you have anything on the health and whereabouts of one Humberto Sanchez ?
Hey On The Yankee Beat Fans. There's a new blog out there called Yankee Nation and it's definitely worth a look. Check it out at www.yankeenation.typepad.com
Guidry needs to "study" his pitchers, and stop the kidding around about not naming a #1 starter. He should know when a pitcher is throwing "free and easy", and when a pitcher is favoring an elbow such as Karstens. Karstens even admits to having a "history" of elbow "problems" in high school. Great hitters are not automatically great hitting coaches. The same follows for great pitchers.
Sanchez is rumored to be damaged goods that the yankees will not admit to. making the sheff trade questionable.
Roy,
I said the same about Guidry months ago in which everyone on here got on me. He may be decent but too me he should have been placed in the minors to coach.
What a bunch of hardasses!...It was Guidrys attempt at levity...better to sometimes laugh in the face of adversity than sulk and be defeatist...suddenly he's a crappy pitching coach ? Man ! What rocks did you crawl out from under!
Who said anything about "suddenly"? If that was my elbow undergoing an MRI, I'm sure I wouldn't appreciate "levity". And try to stick with issues facing the Yanks, not rocks and such.
when dealing with the FUTURE you have to have a delicate sence of leadership direction and know the signs of hiding an injury etc. what is his experience and is he fully qualified to lead such a group, not bashing guidry , just wanna secure our future
Roy : Please explain why you think Guidry is a poor pitching coach ? I like to hear this! MRIs are after the fact ,you tend to extrapolate an awful lot from not being there.Pitchers are notorious for having poor bullpen sessions and then going out and having good performances .Karstens owes it to the team to tell them how he's feeling physically, not for Guidry to play at Doctor.
explai nwhat makes him a good pitching coach and not just an "Public Relations Mascot" ?
I'm pretty sure a resume on kartsens is available , plus buy the fact that her bulked up and probally was trying ot hard to please could and should alarm any pitching coach . what extra programs is available that Guidry recommended for his pitchers? do not say there is'nt any just asked the mets pitching coach.
you have a staff of ALARM Notice. therefor you need to be on HIGH alert and pitch them with caution. humberto sanchez probally came here and was allowed to air it out without review
I;m waiting, what makes guidry a good pitching coach?
show some stats. show his ranking. etc. show the difference between bullpen and starters re: Bullpen has additional coaches etc.
Reporter - What your expertise on what happened to the pitcher.
Guidry (with a serious face)- Well after careful study of science I learned that he could not throw the ball over the plate.
That is like a weatherman saying the following.....
"Tonight I forcast darkness until the Morning"
I forcast midnight at 12am
crickets... no answer
RUSE-
I agree Karsten's bears part of the blame for this, but the kid wants to make the 25 man roster and will not "beg off". A Mgr. and pitching coach have to be aware of this, and watch young players in general especially close. There are coaches that "steal signs" which requires "eagle eye" obsevation of the 3rd base coach, the other manager, the other dugout in general. There are players that do the same in regard to the other pitcher. This is how they figure out if a pitcher is "tipping his pitches". This same detailed "power of observation", should be inherent in any teams pitching coach. Karstens has a "history" of elbow trouble, he had trouble "getting loose" in the pen before his start, and he was "pounded" for 2 innings and Guidry didn't notice a thing. This is being a "poor pitching coach".
Roy,
You're kidding right? You are blaming the pitching coach for a pitcher not saying his arm doesn't feel right? Guidry is looking for mechanical flaws or something like that. They expect this kid to say something if he's not healthy. You say he wants to make the 25 man roster, I'd be willing to be that he wants to have a long career in MLB which he would jeopardize by pitching w/ a bad elbow. He knew with the injury to Wang he had already made the team, it was his duty to inform the team of the injury. There is a fine line between being "gutsy" and being "selfish" and Karstens was not being part of the team when he concealed his pain.
Jim A explain why guidry is a good coach.

under which watchful eye is one noticing such. after seeing get whacked you mena to tell me nothing was noticabally different in his delivery? especially after watching him the prior starts , They said he was favoring his elbow
i'm waiting
Gator was a fine pitcher until Billy Martin overused him , rip you pos! That does not make him a pitching coach.....I liked him as a starter and thought Neil Allen wou;d've been a better choice...
would've not wou;d've
