Lilly wants to be a Yankee

As first reported by SI.com, Ted Lilly has told the Yankees he is willing to sign with them for four years and $40 million, which is $4 million less than the Cubs offer. This has been confirmed by Larry O'Brien, Lilly's agent, as well as someone familiar with the Yankees' plans. Brian Cashman is currently weighing it over, though right now he is dining with Scott Boras. O'Brien will be in the lobby at 8 to make a statement.

Would he sign for $4 million less on top of that, like Jim B. speculated yesterday?

I'd go for him at $36 million over four years, though not more than that.

Tim Kurkjian on ESPN just reported that indications are that Pettitte is going back to the Astros since he called them first to tell them he would be playing next year.
TK also said that the Yanks "didn't need" Pettitte because they were going to sign Igawa. I don't think that's a true statement at all. I'd sign Lilly and Pettitte and let Igawa go back to Japan or sign him cheap and make him a reliever.

Oh God I hope not.

Jim A

I'm with you 100% on Lilly and Pettite. Igawa can earn his stripes as a reliever.

I have been telling everyone that Lilly wants to come home badly. Now, if BC will just get something done.

Rick,
I'm certain Lilly will be a Yankee, unless they don't want Pettitte and Lilly, which they should.

All these hot stove reports are driving me crazy. I haven't done anything at work all week. It's a freakin' roller coaster ride isn't it guys? One minute Pettitte is coming, next he is going, then Lilly, then no Lilly...Of course we have to tune into "Yankees Hot Stove" tomorrow on YES to get even more info.

If I'm going to suffer, I'm glad I'm suffering with you fine people. I just hopoe we're celebrating pretty soon.

I sure hope the Yankees take Lilly -- he's an overpriced piece of crap...I do not want the Cubs to sign him.

Is that you Steve Bartman?

Everyone's overpriced in this current market.

Lilly is not crap.

The Cubs could use a pitcher like him.

Jim

I don't get anything done at work either. We are alot alike. I can't take it much more. I hope we are all celebrating soon and praising BC for getting us everything we want for Christmas.

It takes alot of b*lls for Lilly to first publicly rule out Toronto and then come out and publicly say he'll take 4 million less to play for Yanks than the Cubs. Both those teams could tell him to go to h*ll. He wants to play for the Yanks that badly. How can BC not get something done with this guy?

Eric,
I'm sure Steve thinks that Prior and Woods will be the answer for the Cubbies this year...maybe we should give them Pavano so they could set a record for most days on the DL by one rotation.
How 'bout it Steve? We'll give you Pavano for Zambrano.

Rick,
You're right. How would the Cubs feel if Lilly says "well, the team I really wanted to play for said no so here I am...ahem...I'm happy to be here".
It's like the Beltran situation from two years ago where his agent told the Yanks that Beltran would come to the Yanks for $10M less but the Yanks passed and the Mets acted like they won the lottery. I would have told him to p*ss off.

Jim

Exactly, Lilly has clearly burned some bridges and put himself out on a limb by PUBLICLY doing what he has done. That shows me alot, especially with millions of dollars at stake. I hope BC sees that and does the right thing here.

I do want Pettitte more though so the last thing I want to hear is that Lilly is coming and Pettitte is not. Well, second to last, last would be that they both aren't coming. Jeez...how sad is it that we're obsessing over a #5 starter? Remember when we thought we were getting a number one via a trade?

It's 8:04 PM...where the hell is O'Brien?

Now, we'll have to wait for and annoucement. This is driving me crazy. What's next? Pavano is going where if he passes his physical. I don't think I good live through his exam with his track record.

Rick and I are right with you Rick. We're all crazy....

I looked at the clock and thought the same thing! We must be pyschos or something.

Lilly is a Cubbie.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Cubs continued their off-season spending spree Wednesday, reaching preliminary agreement with free-agent left-hander Ted Lilly on a four-year, $40 million contract, FOXSports.com has learned.

Dammit...

Cubs, 4 / 40 MM

HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Son of a B !!! I hope Pettite just uses BC to get more money from Houston. It'll serve him right. This is like George firing Billy. I am PISSED.

Oh poor Yanks, looks like Lily is comming to the North Side... Good Ol Cashman didnt think it was worth it...

Thank Goodness, first Lily and now lets work on Meche

Don't the Cubs have a blog?

espn has not reported that lilly is a cub

I'm really not surprised Cashman passed on Lilly. He's a solid pitcher, but he won't eat any innings, is it really worth $10mil per for a 4/5 starter? Let's just hope Pettitte is actually serious about NY this time and not just playing us for more $ from Houston.

Sounds like Swindell is going to run the team the way Larry Dolan runs the Indians, right into the ground.

I love NICOLE

Why are you guys upset? This is great news for the yankees. We don't need the albatross that is Ted Lilly.

Eli, I agree with you on Andy. But, if he wanted to drive the price up, why would he have just talked to two teams?

Rick, don't feel bad,the Yanks I assure you have other irons in the fire.I see possible trade winds brewing w/ the Dodgers...this stuff is trickier than we might think.

OK, heres the rotation as I see it:

Wang, Mussina, Igawa, Cashman, and Swindell.

Yeah, that'll Git-R-Done

YanksFan, my gut feeling is that if Pettite is willing to come back to NY, he will, period. The Yanks can offer him whatever he wants for one year (obviously within reason), maybe with a mutual option for a second year or something. I don't THINK he's just using the Yanks, just sort of hoping out loud. As for why he isn't including other teams, when a player talks about possibly retiring, he's not going to suddenly decide to go play for Texas/Seattle etc. just for some extra money. He's going to play where he wants to play and the money will work out. Now we just wait.

ruse

I'm tired of bringing in all these guys from the outside that just want a big pay check. They don't care where they pitch or play. Lilly WANTED to be a YANKEE. It's like Billy Martin. He NEVER wanted to manage other teams, he wanted the Yankees.

Cashman can shove his irons up his .....

I just heard a comment that the Yanks and Dodgers are talking about a Brad Penny trade.
Alright, so we move on from Lilly. It's not devestating by any means. Cash will figure something out, I'm sure of it.
I will be royally pissed if Pettitte doesn't come back though. I will go way back to our discussions of a while back and say that I'd rather see Cash make a blockbuster of a trade for a number 1 or 2 guy than anything.

Matthew G: Way to gloat, considering Lilly didn't want to play for the Cubs and offered the Yanks a discount so he wouldn't have to.

Rick...you are really bitter! Breathe in, breathe out...we'll be okay. (I'm in the acceptance phase right now).

Go see Borat and laugh your butt off for a while, you'll be okay.

The Cubs are an interesting spot for Lilly. He's going to change leagues (yes, I know the NL is softer but change is still hard) and be a fly ball pitcher in a small park with unpredictable winds. There's gonna be some days in the next few seasons, when we watch him getting lit up in Chi Town, and think, "Wow, I'm really glad we didn't give him $40 million."

Lilly signed with Cubs

Guys, we have the best pitcher in the minor leagues as rated by a number of publications - Phil Hughes. He will be in Scranton next year and look for him by June / July. He is better than the Meche/Lilly/Suppan class of FA. Please don't tell me that "he's not ready"...based on what? Because I heard the same thing about Jeter, Cano and Wang and please remind me how that worked out.

I don't want another NL stiff that doesn't understand or care about the dynamics of the AL East.

Jim

This is just like Billy getting fired to me. I am breathing, but I don't know if I even want to anymore. I am in the hate Cashman mode right now. Thanks for the concern though, you and ruse.

Emag: Hughes is ready "stuff" wise, but not arm strength wise. He has been brought along very slowly and hasn't thrown a lot of innings at all so he won't be ready to step in next year, except for a short period of time.

Emag

Just who is he going to replace in June/July?

I don't want Penny either Rick. He's RH and injury prone and a former Marlin. I think we've got one of those already.

OK Cash, I guess I'll settle for J. Santana then. When's the trade going to be announced?

Man, I am trying to burn off some hate! I hope Pettite sticks BC. Teach him a lesson.

Wow, Rick, calm down. Ted lilly for 10 million a year isn't exactly a can't miss deal.

First of all Lilly was already a yankee and he sucked....Welcome Home pettite....and japaneese star can't wait....Lilli 58-57 HUH right go to bartmans state
