Our winter meetings coverage

A slow first day of baseball's winter meetings heated up when the sun went down, making it appear as if today and tomorrow will be filled with deals. Here's what we wrote about in the paper today chronicling all things baseball.

  • While still concentrated on pitching, the Yankees plan to at least begin to address their other needs while they're here. And they've already done a background check on Shea Hillenbrand and were not bothered with what they came up with.

  • Ken Davidoff speaks with one of the thousands of people here who is trying to get a job in baseball. Only this guy stands out because his name is, yes, Jeffrey Maier.

  • Over on the Mets side of things, the battle for Barry Zito officially began as GM Omar Minaya met face-to-face with high-powered agent Scott Boras last night.

  • Newsday's Bob Herzog caught up with Jorge Posada at a charity event in Manhattan, and the Yankees catcher talked about a possible Andy Pettitte return.

  • And in Davidoff's national baseball notebook, there is news on Greg Maddux, Vicente Padilla, Ted Lilly, Jeff Suppan, Manny Ramirez and Joe Crede.

  • Comments (99)

The meetings are boring. But, Cash does not have to do anything big and this team will still be OK. His strategy is what this organization needs to keep it strong and stocked with young talent for years ahead.

Dontrelle Willis isn't going anywhere. That's what the Florida Marlins are telling anyone who inquires about the personable and gifted lefty. The Yankees did call and so did the Mets and they were both told the same thing. At long last, the Marlins - this time with the direct involvement of commissioner Bub Selig - are making progress on getting a new stadium deal in downtown Miami, which would preclude any more payroll-dunking by them. Besides, Willis isn't costing them a hole lot right now and they have him under control for two more years.

The rumor du jour concerning the Mariners had the Giants, Red Sox and Mariners working on a three-team deal. The Mariners would wind up with Manny Ramirez to play left field, the Giants would get Richie Sexson to play first base and the Red Sox would get closer J.J. Putz and center field prospect Adam Jones, among others. Seattle would, under one scenario, also land starting pitcher Noah Lowry.

I agree - Don't Trade A-Rod. He will be better next year and in the future.

Through much of Day 1 at the winter meetings Monday, the talk around the lobby of the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort was that Lilly was headed to the Cubs, who are thought to have offered a four-year package in the range of $35 million to $38 million. By the evening, however, the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Blue Jays also were considered serious players.

The Yankees usually hit Lilly pretty well, so I don't see why the Red Sox go after him unless it's a red herring. Although maybe it means their negotiations with Matsuzaka aren't going so well? Nah, I doubt it...the PR fallout for them would be worse than giving up all the money it would take to sign him.

Maybe, like the Yankees, they're trying to drive up the price for their division rival Blue Jays, to make sure he stays out of their hands.

Rockies have backed off on their interest for Carl Pavano. They were willing to take the oft-injured righty provided the Yankees picked up more than half of the $20 mil left on his contract. There are many who believe that if Pavano can show up to spring training healthy and at least make it through a couple of outings, the Yankees and Rockies will get together on a deal for him. Cashman does not want Pavano back on the team but won't pay someone else to take him (entirely) either.

Also, with the recent big money signings for relief pitchers, teams are asking the Yankees about Kyle Farnsworth. His contract, obscene last year, now looks more middle of the road. A National League team (perhaps the Phillies) would be a good fit for him. The Yankees have lots of good young arms who could compete for a bullpen spot, but if the Yankees move Farnsworth then there is no way Cashman can proceed with his original plan of having Proctor provide depth in the rotation.

    Chip

I say send Farnsworth out and let the kids compete for a RP spot, or rotate them in over the course of the summer. Proctor can move into the setup role.

Pavano, get him out of here ASAP. Pay some salary and get a player back, or just get someone to take over payments for a bag of balls.

I like Cashman's handling of the teams player movements and none movements. As long as he retains a little of the Boss's go get this one, occassionally. There is always the trade or FA signing which can fall into your lap.

I wonder how much sincerity Cashman has for Pavano or this is just icing on the cake for trade bait.

With Pavano, my guess is it will be a game of "pump and dump". They'll try to get him some work in spring training, rave about how good he looks and how he has "never been in better shape", then trade him if they can.
Unless they don't acquire any more pitching, then we're probably stuck with him. I'm hoping for the best, that maybe this guy can get it together and pitch well and be a nice surprise for us, but that's just the optimist in me.

Keith Law of Espn Ranks Yankees third as in talent for next year season and would try to compete for Redsox and Bluejays for playoff spot.

What do you make of that Jim?

Yankees would not make the Playoffs next year unless they acquired frontline starting pitcher.

The Redsox was rank first - If they signed matsuzaka, Drew, Trade Manny for Peavy rumor, and sign Lugo.

Baseball America The Bluejays was second.

    Larry and Jim A

I really don't see how Pavano can even show up at Spring Training and have to face everyone? Besides, you know full well that if he actually walks on the field, he will get hurt and be out for the season AGAIN.

I see the Yanks dumping him before ST. He needs a fresh start somewhere without having to face his Yank mates in ST. I think most teams know his situation in NY and they know that with a fresh start, he could probably pitch like he did for the Marlins.

We are currently a 2nd place team at best, and probably a 3rd place team in reality. This is why we need good young starting pitching. I believe Cashman is letting the R\SOX float Manny on the trade market, knowing any offer Cash really likes, he could swoop in and steal by offering A-ROD. With the scarcity of good young starting pitching available thru the trade market, we had better act quickly, before it dries up completely. Irvin Santana, and Brandon McCarthy, are the best we will see become available. The addition of either of these "chuckers" will set up our young starting staff for several years.

    To Rick Keys:

My favorite all time Yankee player next to Mickey Mantle is Derek Jeter. I cannot get into a discussion over the adjectives to use describing Arod or Derek. I'm not in favor of trading Alex. I believe Alex has the ability to carry the team for a few weeks during stretches of the season. I would rather take my chances from within then trade the best or most talented player in the AL because I rather him at the plate for us than Figgins or Crede. I have been a fan of baseball and the Yanks since the mid 50's. The pitching is mediocre at best and the trade of Arod, a hitter the number 1 slugging 3rd baseman in the AL would be a downer for the Yanks in my opinion.
I rather develope a farm of young pitching talent to call up when needed than trade away blue chips that are hard to come by. Don't get me wrong. Guys like you and Roy may have it pegged correctly. Whatever it is. It is. I'm a Yankee fan with some patience.

I think it's highly unlikely that these clubs will part with their best pitching for offense when it's clear that pitching is what wins in the post season. The W/Sox have said that McCarthy is untouchable, he's their Philip Hughes and the Angels won't part with Ervin for the same reason any team would want him. He's a young talented pitcher that can be a #1 or #2 and those are harder to come by then position players. The Manny trade might be a three-way deal if he's dealt at all. And Alex should stay unless they get a true #1.

Roy - Are you serious??? Third place team?? Are you retarded? Blue Jays haven't improved that much, and the Red Sox are thinking about trading one of their best hitters, and will replace him with Drew, who will play 120 games.

WHy he can't show up?? what he did was his own doing, not his teammates, people embraced Giambi , so if carl comes healthy and ready then be it. again giving up on a pitcher 30 and under is ridiculous , BC has his fingers crossed that this man does well and get the comeback player of the year award. Like i said you give up none of your top tier players ESPECIALLY AROD and JETER , not with Boston getting Pitching and Bats . remember there is a good chance Boston can Keep manny and STILL add JD DREW! unlikely but possible. true you need pitching face it there is none out there that is worth trading away your best. We have arms that stepped in for us IN THE MIDDLE OF A PENNANT RACE. You also have to cast a level of blame on cashman if he walks away empty handed. He is acting like we have no needs and is calm , he better have a plan or else ..... this is him and Torre Warning year. we have a BIG NEED we need a LEAST TWO STARTERS !!!!! you mortaging the future on a Japanese Pitcher whom never threw a pitch in the majors , yeah boston doing the same but at least they have two solid starters we do not. You beeging a pitcher who wants to retire and has elbow issues to come an play that you have a roster spot for him. you see that is that yankee Politics BS that causes issues. You need a solid first basemen who you can rely on (haunts of Nick johnson ) Ya'll busy trying to get rid of A-Rod what we should be doing is dangeling Giambi back to oakland WHO NEEDS a power hitting DH, but nooooooo ya;ll love Giambi.... what really worries me is that SHef's bat missing hurts us , i hope not but it does worries me. You also need energy players. Give the Youngsters we have a chance and see what happens, WHat we need is Gene Michael back in the Mix

Amen Larry! The ARod trade pleas are getting old and I think that a player like Alex can be great here. Many of the bloggers are underestimating the value of Alex and trading him for anything less than a knock-your-socks-off #1 (which won't be available anyway) will not make us a better team. Let him be he'll be a champ here.

Si's.com Tom Verducci is reporting the yanks are close to a 2 year 26 million dollar deal with the yankees prodigal son Andy Pettitte!!!! If this is true he finishes his career were he strated, goes into monument park, and becomes the all time winningest lefty in Yankees history. He said his source was a baseball official close to the negoiations and a deal could come by the end of the week. Wang,moose,pettitte,igawa,pavano/johnson may 1st and wait for hughes to develop.

Who ever is currently wearing #46 better give it up

Oh man...I would do anything to have Andy back. I miss him. I have a nonsexual crush on him. And Mussina. But Andy's the man. I'll stop talking now.

    Larry and OYF

I believe we are all of the same generation (I'm 54) and have been life long Yankee fans. Like the rest of us, you both are entitled to your opinion and encouraged to express it here. I enjoy blogging with you guys.

I guess only time will tell, but I am going on the record right now that A-Rod will NEVER be the "clutch" performer we need batting in the 3-4-5 hole during post season play. He is much more likely to hit into the game ending DP. He is not the guy I want up there with the game on the line.

I'm sorry you don't share my point of view on this, but that's the way I see it.

I just hope he can duplicate his past success. His ERA doubled last season and you can typically add 1 run to NL pitchers who are switching over, that would mean his ERA would be above 5. If he can't be the Andy of past Yankee glory then we'd be getting another middle of the rotation guy. He said Christmas was his deadline I doubt this rumor is true. I think he's buying his wife a great Christmas gift to soften her up to the idea of moving back to NY.

Do you believe Jason Grimsley and his testimony taht Andy Petite and Roger Clemens use Enchance performance drugs and HGH?

As a Yankees Fan, I don't believe him one bit.

Rick; I'm 57 and likewise enjoy blogging with people who can respect anothers opinion.

Fair enough Rick, I agree to disagree.

I also enjoy blogging and reading your opinions whether we agree or not. ☺

Bronx Bomber- I agree with you about Pavano showing up to spring training. Let's face it, people have done worse than hide a car accident and still showed up. A recent example is Jeff Kent, when he broke his hand doing motorcycle tricks, lied and got caught. He had no problem showing up to ST. It happens in sports all the time, guys are just trying to cover their butts, which are near and dear to their wallets. Pavano should get in front of his teammates the first day of spring training and say "I f*cked up and I'm sorry". They're guys, they're not a bunch of babies (I was going to say woman but I didn't want to get in trouble) who will hold a grudge forever because I believe most would have done the same thing. Todd Helton, one of the most respected players in the game and his teammate who was a ROY candidate both lied when the rookie got hurt while with Helton at a bar or something. Remember they said something about the kid getting hurt carrying deer meat?

Although I disagree about Pettitte. I'd love to have him back and I believe that once he decides to come back, we'll get the bulldog that we remember so well. He doesn't appear to be the type of guy that would come back simply for money and recognition (ala Clemens).
Can you imagine the ovation when he makes his first start at Yankee Stadium? that will be nice and if this happens, I'll be there. Look for the bald guy w/ a Thurman Munson jersey on and buy me a beer!

Pettitte also had a 2.80 after the all-star break last year which was third among lefties behing Johan Santana, and clevland's Jeremy Sowers. He has always been a slow starter and will visit the DL atleast once during the 2007 season, but when the games are on the line in October more time then not he shows up.

Pettitte is 13-8 with a 3.75 in his career with the yanks in the postseason. He also was 3-1 with a 2.10 in the 2003 postseason, his only loss coming to Josh Beckett (2-0)in game six of the 2003 world series.

As per Joel Sherman in this mornings Post, the Yanks informed Shea Hillenbrand's agent that they will not meet his request for two years. It seems now that Hillenbrand is headed to the Angels.

it is going to be a long year.

Jim, I'll be there too. How about you spring for the beer though, I'm still a student and will likely max out my funds for the ticket in the first place.

    Jim A

My comments about Pavano not being able to face his teammates had nothing to do with his car accident. Well, a little bit.

Have you been keeping up on his situation over the past 18 months? He is a running joke in the locker room with his teammates and management as well. They even have plastered his locker with stuff.

When asked about him, many of them roll their eyes and think his injury streak is a farce and he just can't pitch in NY. There have been numerous stories about this during the late summer and fall.

Alot of these guys play hurt all the time. Look at Damon, Giambi, Jeter, Posada, etc. But, when Pavano falls down and gets a "butt" bruise, he misses 1.5 years. The guy is a joke with his own and they have no respect for him. Go back and dig up some of the stories. Privately, BC and Torre have had it with him too. That is why he will be gone and the sooner the better.

I just think it is best for all involved if he never reports to ST. Please, go back and check these stories out. The Pavano issue is a BIG deal.

Whitey Ford all-time winningest lefty in Yankee team history at 236,no way Pettitte surpases Ford in 2 yrs....J.D.Drew is not that good a ball player,injury-prone,will be booed outta Boston by Mid-season,is really not an upgrade over Nixon....No reason for the Yanks to trade talent when so many #2and 3 type starters are still available....If you look around the league you'll see not many #1 frontline starters exist anymore...Atticas remember Pettitte is 36 next yr,pretty much a gamble for the Yanks if rumour is true....roll the dice....

WHy not give him a two year deal??? WHop a FA 1b next season and who from within ?? noone two year deal makes sense now the Angels will get him and their lineup even more powerful can we say first round k.O. again for the yanks??

    Jim A-

I got you on the Beer, yo ucan find me on the third baseline yelling at arod (sometimes in spanish haha) I actually one time caught his and jeters attention when after a Phillips error I told jeter YOUR THE CAPTAIN now between innings you should kick Andy in the ass, him and Arod started laughing

Pettite is a true Yankee and should never have been "encouraged" to leave in the first place. At this stage of his career, he is probably a 15 game winner at best, BUT in post season, he is the bulldog we need. Him and Wang would make a great 1-2 punch in a short series.

    I say Welcome Home Andy!!!

Ruse...he's 34 now. So unless the normal laws of mathematics don't apply, I don't see how he turns 36 next year.

I agree with you Rick. This year the Yankees were a walking infirmary. Even Chacon pitched injured and RJ pitched down the stretch with his back tweaked and he's the oldest guy in the rotation. Had it been another year with less injuries maybe he can patch things up. It looked like he was scared of the mound. I was speechless when he missed the rest of the season because of his awkward fall fielding a ball and throwing to first. The rib cage injury was at a time when it looked like he wouldn't get it ready for the post season run anyway.

Oh, I forgot the mysterious bone chips in his elbow, I wonder how they got there, he wasn't pitching.

    Rick-
I understand everyone's frustration with Pavano and I know the history, I've followed it closely. However, the team was ready to have him back until he covered up the car accident. We all know that one or two good outings would be all it takes to forget about the past. I am not saying I want him on the team at all, what I'm saying is I don't want the Yanks to GIVE him away now eat his contract too. They do that so often it gets old really fast. I'd rather see them pump him up in spring training and then take advantage of the thin pitching market and maybe get a 1B for him. As of now, several teams can't even fill out their rotations (Nats, Twins) and I'd think the Yanks could maybe pump and dump Pavano on one of them if he can stay healthy for 5 minutes.
Do I hope the guy gets healthy, mentally anf physically, and pitches well for the Yanks? You bet I do. Do I think that will happen? You bet I don't. I'd just rather see us get some type of useable return for him.

Okay guys, we'll ALL meet at the stadium, I'll buy the first round and Atticas can defend Bronx Bomber against those harassment charges to be filed by A-Rod.
C'mon Rick, OYF, Larry and the gang.

Please Cashman, I don't want Petite back in yankees uniform. Did you know New Drays pitching coach was former Astros coach Jim's Hickey. He's familiar with Petite since He coached him for three years.

Drays and Jim Hickey was so happy and jumping for joy when They heard that Petite are closing two year with the Yankees.

"Quote from Jim Hickey telling his Drays hitters what to expect from Petite and his reportiore
Okay fellas, Expect him to throw his cutter and curveball , changeup and fastball.

I hope the Hillenbrand to Angels rumors are true. .325 OBP? Thats one easy out fellas.

That would be the best plan Jim. I don't think the Yankees should do any kind of "dumping". If the pump and dump plan doesn't work he could be a warm body to throw out there in a blow out to save the real pitchers for more important games. I just think he's going to implode because he'll be the subject of many jokes but hopefully he can have 2 good starts and be on his way and we can have something we can use in return.

Nez - right, expect him to throw his cutter, curveball, changeup and fastball. The same repretoire he's thrown since 1996 when he was instrumental in bringing home 4 World Series Titles. Your point is...

Jim -- Okay, lucky for Bronx Bomber I'm taking the NY bar as well as NJ, so I can represent him in the Bronx. But A-Rod is a public figure anyway, and doesn't really have much of a tort claim. Bomber, you're in good shape, just tone down on the harrassing for the sake of putting him at ease.

Atticas,OK I stand corrected, subtract a yr.35 next June...If he's healthy 18-20 wins with the current Yankee offense

We need good, young, pitchers. Pettitte doesn't qualify on both counts. Stop the Yankee nostalgia craze and fill both Bernie and the Pettitte's roster spots with young promising players. Until we do, we will continue to spend tons of dough on teams that struggle to make the playoffs, and then get bounced in the 1st round.

I'd love to meet at the stadium and I would spring for a round. My problem is I live in Ohio. Maybe the gang can come to my place and watch a game on the HD big screen and I'll buy a keg?

If Pavano shows at ST, the "heat" and scrutiny will be soooo intense on him that I predict he will come down with heat stroke and be on the DL inside of a week.

I guess a road trip is in order Rick. You're just going to have to leave the ranch and come to the city! I don't live in NY anmore either, but I go to the stadium at least 4 times a year.
If I keep getting speeding tickets on the Jersey Turnpike I might not be going as much as I'd like.

My point is that Hickey is familiar and knows where he throws his pitches in certain areas and percentages of a strikezone.

I'll be there! I love the stadium, my favorite place in the city.

Hey Jim I'm from NJ and I've been in a pickle or two on the turnpike on my way to and from the Stadium. The traffic is Horrendous! Those troopers, they come out of nowhere! I stick with the train most times though and I'm usually up in a tier box seat not as lucky as Bronx Bomber.

Wow, everyone's getting taxed out of NJ / NY huh? Makes me wonder...

Nez- I don't think that matters. Scouting data alone gives every team at the very least a "familiar" idea of what and where any pitcher throws in a given situation. Pettitte's a bulldog. I want him for October, and 2 years is a bargain in this market for that veteran presence to help groom and mentor the young talent we have waiting.

I live in the Wash. DC area now (work reasons) but I grew up in NY and spent a lot of time on the turnpike. The troopers used to be pretty cool, they would pull up next to me (out of friggin nowhere) and just give me the "take it easy" signal and I'd drop back to about 70 MPH. Now, they pull ya right over and write you up. Well, at least Atticas will have his law license in Jersey so he can help me out! I'm reading the Verducci/Pettitte article now. I still have doubts it will happen, but I'm sending Mrs. Pettitte some flowers just in case.

Nez- To follow up on Atticas' comment a bit. All you have to do is look at Mariano Rivera. I'm sure there are plenty of very wise coaches who take the on-deck batter aside and whisper in his ear "okay, look for the cutter, he's gonna throw it to you, I just know it".
You know how that usually works out though.

Right - my point exactly, Jim.

    Hahaha ,

Well i tell ya'll some of the quotes.

"swing at the moon again while the ball is in the dirt and see what happens"

Stop acting like a punk , letting some rookie strike you out!

Yo jeter why don't you make Arod run laps for Striking out looking with runner in Scoring position.

If the Yankees start the season with Andy the everyday 1st baseman, we are in trouble

Oh boy, don't let Eric hear you say that.

    Royals, Cardinals battle for Batista

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6239412

The Royals have offered free-agent right-hander Miguel Batista a three-year, $24 million contract, but Batista also is receiving strong interest from the Cardinals, FOXSports.com has learned.

By signing Batista, the Cardinals would protect themselves against the possible loss of one of their two free-agent right-handers, Jeff Suppan and Jeff Weaver.
The Royals, who also are pursuing free-agent right-hander Gil Meche, are seeking a veteran stabilizer for their rotation. Meche is expected to land with the Cubs or Blue Jays

Please, I thought that was a buried topic for now...

Victoria's Secret stunner Adriana Lima cozies up to Derek Jeter back stage at Fox and Friends.

    Go Jeter. Your so lucky.

    Atticas,
I hope you r a chick..that Andy Petitte, Mike Mussina crush is scaring me

There was a report that the yanks and the w/sox are in serious talks. Anyone know the scoop. This was on espn news

Cashman asked Williams what he had for lunch.

    Williams said "turkey sandwich"

You guys all make this a great blog. When we disagree with each other, we back it up with some good points and intelligent discussion. I really enjoy reading your opinions on Yankee stuff. It's the best Yankee news that I get out here in AZ.

Don't be too disappointed if Cashman doesn't do a thing at the meetings. Like most of you have said, I like the fact that the Yanks aren't the BIG spenders now and that Cashman won't trade the kids for a quick fix. I like the patient approach and building from within. Remember; the championship team of '98 had 13 home grown guys on the roster.

Trade Melky's and I wanted Bernie's to stay and He's been wearing a yankees uniform more than 15 years.Since Melky's is young, trade him instead.

I'd trade A-Rod for Adriana Lima anytime!

    John G

    Welcome aboard!

    Thanks Rick.

Red Sox manager Terry Francona told XM Radio that he doesn't believe Manny Ramirez will be traded.

[b][quote]"I don't see it happening," Francona said. "Everyone hears the whispers. I don't think it's any big secret that there are times of the year that he feels Boston is closing in on him. But he still shows up to play. You put that bat behind David [Ortiz], that's when we're rolling." The Red Sox haven't talked with the Dodgers since Monday, and little stock is being put into reports that the Nationals are involved in three-team scenarios regarding Ramirez. "The Nationals are putting that out," said one baseball official whose team has been involved in Manny talks. The Red Sox reportedly will stop actively pursuing a Ramirez deal on Wednesday.

I was hoping Redsox would Trade Manny and Sign J.D Drew.

Can you please name the 13 homegrown talent ??? i remember that team but cannot remember 13 "home grown " talent on that squad.

whats was the starting 5? , Line -up and bench.??

I said nonsexual! like George Costanza's nonsexual crush with "Tony." I don't get the turkey sandwich joke, did I miss something?

okay maybe there was but all these players was on the roster at the end of the season???
