« Lilly wants to be a Yankee | Main | Focusing on Pettitte »

Ted Lilly to the Cubs

Here's how it went down.

The Cubs offered four years for $40 million a while back.

Agent Larry O'Brien told the Yankees yesterday they have until 6 p.m. today to match. And if they did match it, he more than likely would have become a Yankee.

Brian Cashman called O'Brien at 5:45 p.m. today and told him he "couldn't make a decision within the timeframe," O'Brien said. So Lilly then decides on the Cubs.

Now the Yankees turn to Andy Pettitte, of course.

Jim - thanks for the rapid info. This is not such a bad thing.

That is if Lilly doesn't win 20 games for the Cubs and help bring them to the WS.

Provided that they come away with Pettitte or another high end starter, smart move. If their last move for the rotation is signing Kei Igawa, and we have to rely on Johnson and Pavano too much, we may be in a bit of trouble in 2007.

Pettitte needs to come here. I just hope he doesn't have revenge on his mind from 3 years ago when he felt "slighted" by the Yanks.

We're in trouble for pitching..come on Cash, make something happen before I tell George what's going on.

O.K. time to move on ! I think the Yanks and Dodgers could make a deal.Dodgers suddenly have a surplus of starters, possible Penny and the Korean lefty Kuo might be available...I wouldn't hold my breath on Pettitte signing w/NY

Good call Cash! An average lefty is not worth that kind of $$, just my opinion.

XM radio had some guys on about two mins. ago, didn't catch who it was but they said they think the Yanks and Dodgers are discussing Brad Penny. I don't necessarily like that so much because he's RH.

Whatever ends up happening with Pettitte will end up telling us a lot, not just about this year, but about 3 years ago too. The way I see it, there's 3 options for what Pettitte is thinking:

1) He would go to either team, Hou or NY, and only cares about money. Doubtful, but you never know. In this case, the Yanks can clearly make the bigger offer, and he comes back to NY.

2) He wants to stay in Hou, but needs to have a second team in the running to add a couple million. He ends up in Hou unless the yanks blow the 'stos offer out of the water.

3) He wants to come back to NY and compete for the WS again. His agents sit down with Cash and they get it done.

See Jim A. I'm clairvoyant ! He may not be a lefty but he's a better pitcher than Lilly. My sense this would be a multi-player deal.

Yeah Penny, that's about what NL pitchers are worth in the AL EAST !!! Get a clue Cashman.

George, WAKE UP GEORGE !!! We need you man.

You called it Ruse. We'll see what happens.
I think the Yanks need to announce that fans will be given free bible's at every home game this year...anything to get Andy to come back.

Andy...this is GOD speaking....I want you to go to the YANKEES, do you hear me son? GO TO THE YANKEES.

Does anyone want to buy all my Yankee jackets and memorabilia?

Rick, remember Penny beat the Yanks twice in the 2003 World Series.Schilling,Big-Unit were primarily NL west pitchers ,you can say what you want about them but they made life miserable for the Yanks in the 2001 WS

ruse

Thank you. I appreciate all the comfort you and Jim are giving me, I really do. I am just sickened.

Penny vs. Lilly, some stats:

Penny:
W-L: 72-62 (162g avg, 12-10)
ERA: 4.06
ERA+: 104 (100 is avg)
WHIP: 1.319
K/BB: 2.35

Lilly:
W-L: 59-58 (11-11)
ERA: 4.60
ERA+: 99
WHIP: 1.378
K/BB: 2.09

Given that Penny is 2 years younger, I'd say he's got a pretty decent edge here. Besides, he wouldn't cost $40 million.

My Winners and Losers so far this offseason and grades.

Winners

Cubs - A+ - Signing Soriano to ludicrous contract, Derosa and Lily

Redsox - B+ - Redson won Matsuzaka bid- He's next Pedro or Hideki Irabu II- Lugo , Drew, and Okajima. Still Need a Closer.

Yankees - B+ Won the Bid for Kei Igawa and possiblity of Andy Petite returning to the Yankees. The starting rotation still question mark. Rj's health and Pavano' makeup- Can He pitch in Ny? First Base - Hillenbrand or Philips?

Braves - C+

Fix their Bullpen - last their Bullpen rank last in mlb.

Acquiring Gonzalez from Pirates and Soriano from Seattle

Losers -

Bluejays - C+ Signing Frank Thomas $18 million for two years and possibly giving meche 4 year deal worth $10 Million

Angels - C Giving Gary Matthews $50 Million for career .240 hitter and had a career year in 2006.

Signing Speier to 4 year worth $18 million.

Orioles - C- Revamping their Bullpen but Didn't acquired a Right Handed bat with Soriano and Lee.

Rick, Man pull yourself together !

Thanks Eli for those stats, you are quick !

No problem ruse, and here's some for Pettite while I'm at it (note that since I was comparing Lilly to Penny, I pulled different stats for them, and used full careers rather than last 3 for Pettite):

Pettite's stats for his 3 year stint in Houston:

37-27, 3.38 ERA, .252 BAA, 1.22 WHIP
428 Ks, 142 BBs (K/BB = 3.01)

Pitched 200+ innings last 2 years
Home and Road ERA EXACTLY the same
Had an ERA of 2.80 after the break last year

Wow those Cubbies are stacked, locked and loaded with FA. That Lou Pinella has gotten everyone on his wish list.

Are the Yankees really strapped for cash? Why are they worried so much about money now? Are they not making enough profit to continue spending? That evil Bud Selig's master plan has worked out. Dam you Bud!!!

Now seriously, I wanted Lilly but I don’t think we need to get worked up about it. If he wins 20 for the Cubs I wouldn’t be surprised. Going to the NL might make him a stud it doesn’t mean he would’ve been able to do that here in the ALE. He was a mid to back of the rotation guy that may have won 13-15 games.

Ruse,
Didn't Pavano beat the Yanks in the 2003 WS too? shhhh...don't tell Rick, I don't think he can handle that news right now.

We'll be okay. Something will come along sooner or later.
So, hoping we get Andy back, here's where we are:
Wang, Andy, Moose, RJ, Igawa/Karstens
In a short series, that might not be too bad. It's not great, but it's better than last season, the wild card is RJ. If he is at all healthy, it would be great.
I wouldn't count the Yanks out yet guys, they will do something, you can count on it.

Isn't Penny a hard thrower, even though he's an RHP? I think I'd take him over Lilly.

I wonder who the Yankees will give up for this guy?

Good thing we didnt get Lilly. You wouldnt pay top dollar for an aevrage car, why do so for a pitcher. Please people, keep in mind that we have Jeff Karstens who could give us exactly what Lilly wouldve given at a fraction of the cost.

Penny twice ,Pavano and Beckett once each.Penny throws 95-98 he's a little erratic at times ,he's I think 28 yrs old .Will see what happens.I really believe Karstens is a better choice than Lilly.Lilly will be the second coming of Glendon Rusch at Wrigley.500 pitchers getting 10+ mil a yr....it would be great if the Yanks could work out a deal w/Pettitte let's not hold our collective breathes,Carlos Lee might have been a difference maker for Houston he improved their offense immeasurably ,I'm sure Pettitte has to take that into consideration...

As much as I was surprised that Cashman did not pull the trigger on this deal. I'm not overly concerned. So, much can happen overnight or before the season. Lilly at 40 million is high priced land it a sellers market. The Yanks are really paying top dollar each year to win the division. If, you want to take control of your budget and promote from within like Gene Michael did and our last stretch of glory years and pick up a hired gun like Cone etc. than we have to start somewhere and 2007 is our starting year. The Yankees aren't going cheap but finally using their collective heads. We need spots for the young guys to advance. Andy Pettitte would be a nice 1 or 2 year addition. Sounds like the old days back in '96-'00.

If Yankees Lose out on Petite. Go after Meche and possibly sign Mulder like Lieber type Deal. Yankees doesn't have to forfeit a draft pick. Please Cashman to take chance on Mulder. Thanks..

I sorry someone help me, Wasnt it my yanks who got beat in the first round of the playoffs by a det team with good pitching? You would think we would learn something. I dont like this rotation at all

Damon won't knock Sox
By GEORGE KING

Johnny Damon has too much class to rip the Red Sox over signing J.D. Drew one year after letting him go over a $4 to $6 million difference.

Johnny Damon’s class oozed through the connecting cell phones lines. Having shot a “not so good’’ 87 on an Orlando golf course, Damon was asked what he thought of the Red Sox giving J.D. Drew five years and $70 million one year after they could have retained him for not much more money.

“I am glad J.D. took advantage of the situation,’’ said Damon, who like Drew, is represented by agent Scott Boras. “He found a team willing to pay him. I am glad he got that even if J. D. got more than me.’’

Following the 2005 season Damon signed a four-year deal worth $52 million to leave Boston for The Bronx and could have retained the heart and soul of the Red Sox’ 2004 World Series team for between $4 and $6 million according to Damon. Still, he had no regrets.

“He’s younger and a tremendous player,’’ Damon said. “It’s not just me they lost. Trot Nixon has been there a long time and still deserves to be there.’’

Damon is close to Barry Zito but insists he doesn’t know what team Zito will pitch for next season.

Damon was hoping the Yankees signed Boston buddy Kevin Millar but Millar re-upped with Baltimore. “That would have been good but I still get to see him during the season,’’ Damon said.

Lobby of Dolphin Hotel has taken on the look of a drug den with sellers and buyers huddling off to the side while reporters gauge every movement. Agents talking to club representatives; scouts talking to other scouts.

All the talk hasn’t led to much more than speculation.

----------

For what seems like the millionth time since the ALDS ended so bitterly, GM Brian Cashman answered a question about Alex Rodriguez’ future by saying the Yankees aren’t trading him. Expect the same question raised tomorrow.

Phillies are listening to offers for ex-Yankee Jon Lieber, whose departure from The Bronx after the 2004 season led to the ill-advised signings of Carl Pavano and Jaret Wright. Yankees don’t appear to have an interest in Lieber II.

Larry I totally agree, although Yankee budget probably will never drop below 150 million ever again...I think Hughes could easily step in mid-season and be dominant ,he is really something to behold ...Yanks can easily win the East with what they have...I still think Cashman will pull off a good deal for a pitcher.Keep the faith

Andy,I agree on Mulder,if they sign him to a Lieber-type deal ,he might be ready by late May to cut it lose.He 's a terrific competitor....Meche is a bum and I do believe he's about to sign w/Toronto

ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Phillies have acquired Freddy Garcia from the White Sox for Gio Gonzalez and Gavin Floyd.

No Aaron Rowand? Gonzalez was a White Sox prospect until a year ago, when he was sent to the Phillies in the Jim Thome deal. Gonzalez is probably one of the 30-35 best pitching prospects in baseball, but Floyd doesn't have a lot of value at the moment and we're stunned that this is the best the White Sox could do for Garcia.
Source: ESPN.com

Toby hall to the Yankees? Is there anychance yankees might go after and sign him?

Mike Lieberthal = Signed with Dodgers.

Fred ,the White Sox cut payroll dumping Garcia, which now gives the Phillies enough pitching to contend...Toby Hall to the Yanks w/Penny or Kuo might be the ticket

Come on everyone come back to earth . Should anyone who plays a game be payed anywhere near 40 million. In all reality no is the correct answer.

Good Luck, Ted. I hope that you like pitching in Wrigley.

Cashman said that the Yanks may do nothing at the meetings, remember? He's preaching patience and that's something that's been lacking with us since we lost to the D'Backs in 2001. The Yanks have been on a spending spree ever since getting every "star" that's been out there and for what? Has it produced a winner? How many WS have we won since 2000? Anybody? How many more teams are we going to line the pockets of with the luxury tax!
I like the fact that they aren't making any stupid moves just to respond to what Boston has done.
Right now, our pitching is good enough to win the division because of our lineup. If we're in first or really close by the All Star break, Hughes may be ready and probably Sanchez which would add a spark to the rotation.
We'll see.
