Bye, bye, Bernie?
Here's what Ken Davidoff and I wrote for today's paper:
While Bernie Williams is eager for another season in pinstripes, a cloud of uncertainty hovers over his future. General manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Torre both have spoken with Williams recently, but they have given him little indication whether they plan to have a spot for him on their 2007 roster, according to a person familiar with the situation. Continue reading this story.
If I had to guess right now, I'd say the Yankees do not offer Bernie a contract. I also don't think he would actually choose to play for another team, but you never know...

Bernie is needed!!!!! Teach him 1b . he is a switch hitter
Jim
Thanks for getting us an update on Bernie! I am one of those guys that thinks he DESERVES a spot on the roster even if it is the 25th man. This man is a Yankee, a class act, a proven post season performer, and actually a still productive player based on last years stats.
I realize he would be the 5th OF, sometime DH, and PH. Why can't they let him work some at 1B also? Not as the fulltime answer, but just as another option there to increase his versatility for the team? Kinda like Cairo does. His defensive weakness is his arm, so 1B shouldn't be a problem. He is a switch hitter and can actually hit.
If anyone belongs on this team, Bernie does and they need to find a spot for him.
no teaching bernie 1b man...
that's pretty crazy...
im sorry but now that Giambi is probably gonna be a full time-DH and with all the pitchers we have next year there will probably be no room
Why is that crazy, they put sheff at first in the PLAYOFF"s and bernie number were better than andy's so ???
Bronx Bomber
That's my point too. They put Sheffield there AND in post season games to boot. Lots of old OF's move to 1B. Why not give him a try in Spring Training? He is still a productive bat and a switch hitter! It just gives him more versatility for being a role player. Kinda like Cairo. And, if anybody DESERVES a shot, it's Bernie.
Any opinions on maybe trying Bernie out at first? He can hit better than any of the guys out there now. Just would be up to Bernie if he thought he could make the transition defensively. This might be a solution.
Bernie was "rewarded" last year for the part he played in the Yankee championships of the 90's. We have younger players who deserve the opportunity to make the "07" Yankee team. Somebody had to "step aside" when Bernie came up to the Yankees. It is now Bernie's turn to do likewise.
Bernie can thank our lack of pitching depth for this. If we had starters we could depend on to get through at least six innings per start, we wouldn't need to carry an extra bullpen arm which costs Bernie his spot. If Bernie is gone than it is truly a very sad departure, more for us than him. He's set for life so we can't feel too bad. It's not over yet though as I still think Melky will be traded so we'll have to sit back and see what happens.

I'm with you Jim. I think Melky will be traded also.
i would rather see bernie's career end with the excellent season he had in 2006 rather than risk watching him sit on the bench and get 150 at-bats in 2007 (when the outfield figures to be healthier than last year).
i remember watching mickey mantle his last few years. he couldn't run anymore, his right shoulder was shot, his knees were shot, and yet he kept playing (because he loved the game, i guess). mick hit .237 in 1968, which dropped his lifetime BA under .300 to .298.
mick later said that was a great disappointment, to end up as a lifetime .298 hitter.
i want to remember bernie for last year and all the years before, not what he might become in 2007.
Upon reading Jim's story, one of my first thoughts was that the decision on Bernie could be contingent on the trade of Cabrera. While I like Cabrera a lot (seems like a young Bernie oddly enough...average power, above average defensively, doubles hitter), if you could package him with a prospect (Sanchez) and get a Dontrelle Willis, I say do it. But I wouldnt trade Cabrera straight up for some middle of the road Kris Benson-type.
I trust Cashman in making the right decision re: Cabrera and Bernie, and while Bernie is probably my favorite Yankee, I think the better business decision would be to let him go.
???? 281 12 batting avg constitute a chance he played well last year and was clutch , for each time andy phillips strikes out with runners on base i'm smacking him with a #51 jersey. BEERRRRRRRN BAAAAABY BERRRRRRRRRN.
Now back to Arod situation.. when jeter started the season 0 - 56 a few years back did torre move him ?? Arod batting eigth was a disgrace but i salute Alex for being stand up bout it. Gary spoke becasue the rest of the yankee majority is a bunch of softies and like to talk behind ones back , at least gary was direct! i hate people who smile in your face then talk bad about you behind your back that is bad chemistry. the yankees was choking for three years before arod came , so everybody needs to be checked , ALSO when torre moved Arod to the number 2 spot he EXCELLED! torre should put Arod at number 3 this year and let him be surrounded by Jeter and Bobby
Bronx Bomber, Alex is more suited to bat 3rd or 5th not 4th. I think as the "clean-up" hitter Alex is probably over thinking because he's expected to bring in the run or get on base or get that rally started. It was obvious this season. Of course he’s entitled to an off year that wasn’t too bad actually. HE just looked uncomfortable at the plate and on the days he hit well he sometimes looked surprised.
As far as the Yankees chocking before Alex got here, I think that's an exaggeration. The Yankees haven't won in 6 years and in the time Alex’s been here they haven't won either. I think he will eventually be a gamer in the post season but he hasn’t carried us to victory yet.
Tim Kurkjian is on ESPN saying he "thinks Florida may do something this week" when he was asked about Dontrelle being moved. They need a CF and he mentioned the Mets sending Milledge to Florida.
Melky's better than Milledge so Cash might jump in.
I have a great solution to the Bernie situation and we can cut payroll at the same time. Let's get rid of Farnsworth since he can only pitch once every 5 or 6 days. And replace him with Bruney or the kid from the Wright deal.
We can throw Farnsworth in a package with Melky and Sanchez for Willis. It makes sense because Florida is in dire need of a CF and a closer and Farnsworth would be fine in the NL. We'd have to pay some of Farns' salary but it's only money, right?
Lemme get Cash on the cell phone so I can pitch the deal.
Weird, the post above listed me as anonymous...that was me.

The site has been doing some weird things lately. It held up two of my posts for review by the blog owner and only released the one so far.
Bernie play 1b???
Have you guys not watched games?
Rufus
Have you seen Bernie play 1B?
We need pitching, too.
Teach Bernie how to throw a fork ball so he can pitch for us as well.
Or how 'bout back up catching?
Can Bernie crouch?
Seriously, you guys are ridiculously.
Yeah, we're all ridiculously.
Yes, very ridiculously indeed!
Don't be wiseguys.
I type too fast and usually don't proofread before posting.
Maybe the Yanks could get Willis and Zito that would be great. The Bernie stays

his #51 belongs in the retired section along with other yankee greats, but i do think its time for bernie to let the younger players try an acheive what he did through the years past, good luck bernieyou were great.
