Hope everyone had a good weekend. I did. Now let's get back to business. Near the top of Brian Cashman's agenda this week is putting the 2007 coaching staff together, and I'm wondering what all of you think. Should there be changes? If so, which coach or coaches should go? And do you do everything you can to add Joe Girardi?

Guidry - In
Mattingly - In
Kerrigan - who cares
Peña - Nationals
Bowa - Mariners?
Mazzili - please
Girardi - Yes
I wouldn't underestimate Kerrigan's value. He was a pretty succesful pitching coach and with Gator not having any experience before last year, I think it was good to have him. I'd like to see him stay.
Otherwise, I'd like to see all of them stay, but if one of them leaves, most likely Pena (I haven't figured out how to put the little accent thing above the N yet, sorry Tony, I mean no disrespect), I would like to see Girardi return. I don't see anyone hiring Bowa this year. You know who I'd love to see the Yanks bring on the coaching staff: Goose Gossage. I want someone with an attitude who will tell it like it is to players like A-Rod. I think Goose is our man. By the way, Goose should be in the HOF.
If the Yanks somehow manage to add Girardi, that signals the Yanks have told him he will be their next mgr. I don't think he will agree to be a coach without that guarantee. He could be mgr. in "08", or as soon as this May.
I liked the coaching staff, especially what Tony Pena and Larry Bowa contributed. I would hope Brian Cashman and Joe Torre would retain them if they do not become managers in their own right. The same goes for Ron Guidry and Don Mattingly.
That leaves Lee Mazzilli and Joe Kerrigan. Mazzilli did an outstanding job with Melky Cabrera this season and I would imagine Kerrigan gets credit for the strong bullpen seasons turned in by Scott Proctor and Brian Bruney to some extent.
I wouldn't shake anything up. I loved what this team did for 162 games.
Obviously if a spot does open, Joe Girardi is your first option.
Maz is a bit overrated. Melky played winter ball last year and it gave him more confidence. I'm not saying that Maz didn't help, but he shouldn't get all the credit.
But Maz will be staying, he has a long history with Joe, so it's a given.
Honestly if Pena or Bowa leaves they should move Mazz to 1st or 3rd base coach and bring in Joe G to bench coach...everyone else should stay...they coaching staff did fairly well
Agreed.
Mazz as a bench coach I wasn't sold on that. Joe needs a guy to let him know when he's making the wrong decision.
I see Mazz as Joe's son, he's been with him for most of his life.
Roy:
They aren't going to fire Torre in May. That's ridiculous.
They aren't going to fire a manager that was won 9 straight division titles and 11 straight postseason appearances.
Firing him in the middle of the season like would show that the management and owner is in pure panic mode and that's not a good message to send to the team.
If Torre does indeed gets fired next season, it won't be until their season is over.
As far as the coaching staff is concerned, I bet they find away to bring Girardi back to bench coach one way or another.
If it happens because Pena leaves or they fire someone else, so be it. But, I think it happens no matter what.
Correction:
Above post should say:
They aren't going to fire a manager in the middle of the season that was won 9 straight division titles and 11 straight postseason appearances.
I was quite happy with the coaching staff especially Bowa'a aggressiveness on the bases and assitance in the field with Cano.Thou, no one seems to have a handle on getting Cano to have a more aggressive first step out the batters box after contact. Pena deserves another shot at mgr. He was very influential with Jorge. Mattingly and Guidry did quite well. It was very evident with the hitters and somewhat with the pitchers. Unfortunately, we don't have many pitchers with Ron's stuff and thought process of going at the hitters. Mazz and Kerrigan its difficult to tell. If, Pena goes. Girardi should be given a call as our bench coach with a promise but this will have to play out. We were flat after our relaxed capture of the division title and the coaching staff needs to address the lack of fire. I know their pros but everyone needs a hotfoot once in awhile. To grade the coaching staff in my opinion they are excellent. We do not have the behind the scenes as Jim does which would very nice to know if our accolades are going to the correct coaches.
Jim can you provide this info on who helped who?
I like Joe G very much but guarantee him as the next mgr? Why? He was the bench coach last yr and the Yanks didn't go past the 1st round. Anyway, Joe Torre is the mgr. It was bad enough that he was left twisting for 3 days. The team needs to know he's the mgr. Period. That's been part of his strenght.
I'm w/ PL - I wouldn't change a thing. The Yanks had a great season. They didn't have luck when they needed it in Oct. These playoffs have proven that luck plays a large part. Otherwise, how in the world are we watching a WS between the Tigers and Cards??
Redbug: In my comment I suggested getting Girardi inked if he doesn't sign on with anyone. The reason being I don't think JT at 66 will want to continue this pace after 2007. I like Girardi, Randolph with Mattingly a consideration if choices such as Girardi and Randolph are not available.
Let it go anaconda. You are now just carrying a grudge.
"Let it go anaconda. You are now just carrying a grudge."
What the heck are you talking about?
This statement coming from a guy who got his pants in a bind and wrote three posts trying to explain why he doesn't believe Gary Sheffield is a "borderline Hall of Famer."
Nevermind that he is probably going to finish his career with 500 homeruns.
Anaconda- I haven't seen this type of behavior since "Fatal Attraction". JUST LET IT GO.
Even though I feel that the coaching staff has about 0% bearing on whether the Yankees win or not, I guess there's not too much else to talk about right now, so here are my predicitions:
Pitching-Guidry
Hitting-Mattingly
Bench-Girardi
1st base/Latin liaison-Sojo
3rd Base- Bowa
Bullpen- Kerrigan
Strength and Conditioning- Kenny Rogers- (just wanted to see if you were paying attention)
cs06,
I agree with almost all yur choices, except that Sojo would come back only if Peña gets a manager's job. Posada's defense was much better this year because of Tony's mechanics.
Who cares - none of them had anything to do with them losing except joe torre - he needs to go - why even discuss the rest of them - mattingly is next - that's why they didn't fire joe - girardi won't be the next guy to take over -
All the coachs stay less Mazzili. Bring on Joe G. After that, lets get some pitching and a 3rd baseman. A-Rod to the W/Sox for Garcia and Crede
JOE T. MUST GO-WHY IS HE STILL THERE? NEW MANAGE ANYONE- JOE G BEST AVAILAABLE
