I loved Neil Best's column on the war in the papers this week. To put a classy guy like Joe, whether you think he should've been fired or not was childish. I only wish Neil had called out the leader of this pack of jackasses: Mike Lupica of the Daily News. Lupica is a nasty little person who changes hats quicker than anyone. Go back and read his crap when the Yanks are winning and when they lose two in a row-the guy is bi-polar. Jason Whitlock was right, the little fella is a jerk. Lupica can't just write about the facts, he has to get personal and really nasty so I feel compelled to give some back to him: Mike, you're a crappy "reporter", you are a little worm on ESPN and you never get your facts straight. Other than that, you rock dude!
bill madden may have been premature with his original story on joe getting fired but he got it right in today's daily news. can't say the same for wally matthews, who just mailed one in for newsday.
I think the Yanks hung on to Torre because he has the reputation of being a "players manager." The Yankees know they will need key free agents to rebuild this team. George's money and Torre's reputation aid this cause. Back in the 70's, many free agents were reluctant to sign with the Yanks while Billy Martin was at the helm. His confrontational managerial approach scared players off. His legendary "sucker punch" may have also been a factor.
Wallace Matthews is a total clown. He said something about watching these "unmotivated fat cats yawn through another disappointing season"!!!! Give me an f-ing break. This was an eminently enjoyable season that had a disappointing ending, that's all.
it was an enjoyable season. great movie, ending sucked.
also, agree with Jim A on the little worm, Mike Lupica. I've read Red Smith and Jimmy Breslin and a few others. Lupica couldn't do their laundry. He recycles his own garbage from season to season, putting more time into TV appearances and book-writing than the column that made him what he is today ... a slimy weasel. or worm. whatever.
The press and commenary this week has been ridiculous. Ridiculous because, a team doesn't all of a sudden become unmotivated after having quiet bats in three games. Cory Lidle's "we weren't ready for them" comment notwithstanding. The Yankees are not unmotivated, they play hard, play the game the right way, and want to win a championship. They all do, period. There are no morale lessons in this past week, no grand observations, no philosophical insight to be gained. Other than a team with a great lineup and mediocre pitching got beat or should I say outpitched. Yeah we all want a championship, so this was dissapointing, but the Yankees don't have to rethink their philosophy, which is to pay for experience versus paying for expectations! Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are wrong, but I believe if those are your only choices, which in baseball it is, you pay for experience when you can afford to.
If you listen to the press, the Yankees have been old and over the hill for about eight years now. HA! The core is solid, the uh "depleted farm system" has some promise, some proven by the way, and Cashman will get some pitching.
Listen to you idiots pile on Wallace Matthews and Mike Lupica because they don't slurp the Yankees. At the end of the day, Matthews and Lupica are going to continue to put out columns that are read by thousands, while you are all just a bunch of scrubs sitting at home typing away, with a devoted audience of a dozen or so idiots like yourselves.
Tom YF, it's not only the press that claims that the Yankees had a disappointing season. Go on any Yankee forum or blog and you'll see that the prevailing attitude amongst Yankee fans is that unless the Yankees win the World Series, the season has been a failure.

This is a comment about Wallace Matthews's column. Say,what you want about Torre's managing. We all have but I have not heard one blogger mention his intestional fortitude because he did not tell George to shove it. Matthews only writes negative columns about the Yankees which most of the time are so slanted that fact has no reality in his writing. Nice Job make up stories and print based on a slanted view. He must of gotten A+ in grade school english class for flowery compositions. Joe Torre can stand up to critique on his managing skills but having no guts. Matthews you are low.
^^ Wallace Matthews pissed-off ex-gay lover.....
As usual, Lupica was his whiney pre-pubecent best. NYC's No.1 bawlbaby. Watching him on ESPN's Sports Reporters is hilarious with that key in his back, ranting and raving and kicking his feet. He's about 8% right on anything and 92% goofy. No Yankee should ever grant him an interview.
bob is gay
Matthews is a total jerk and the Yankees are awesome. He actually gets paid for writing this crap....what were his bosses thinking!!!!
Everyone keeps bringing up the 4 torre championships, but other managers, not a lot, were able to win even more. however, no manager in the history of american professional sports had lost a 3-0 series lead. torre's name will forever be associated with that loss, as well as wasting the biggest payroll ever against teams like the angels and tigers.
torre is today responsible for the environment of losing that prevails in the yankees' clubhouse. this team cannot win, despite the ridicolous uneven playing field, because lack of effort has become acceptable and lack of accountability is the dominant theme. players are not held accountable for failure, and sadly the same's true for their manager. in the old days the yankees had players who didn't need anyone to hold them accountable or drive them hard, as they that fire within. this team doesn't. it needs a real manager whose standards are high. they don't need a laid-back "players' manager" who gets vastly outcoached every post-season. they don't need to become the braves of the AL, because look where the braves are now. they need a manager who can get into the face of a player once in a while, to challange an unmpire, to show some emotion as his team is getting kicked around and out of the playoffs as he's sitting stoic leaning on a baseball bat. a laid-back emotionless manager breeds a team of the same nature, especially if his players do not have the inner fire to compensate their manager's no-pulse attitude. that's not what this yankee team needs.
sadly, that's what they got for at least one more disappointing year.
