In all the talk of the possible return dates of injured Yankees -- like Hideki Matsui, Gary Sheffield and Robinson Cano -- the name Carl Pavano is hardly spoken of seriously as someone who could come back and help the team in September.
It seems like Pavano has spent his entire Yankees career rehabbing one injury or another. The Yankees have been fooled before by hints of progress; they hope they won’t be fooled again.
An impressive batting-practice outing before yesterday’s game at Camden Yards had manager Joe Torre contemplating – dare we say it -- a return to action for Pavano, who hasn’t pitched in a big-league game since June 27, 2005 because of a variety of ailments. The latest was a bone chip in his elbow that was surgically removed on May 25.
“He was good,” Torre said after watching Pavano throw 50 pitches to Nick Green and Andy Phillips in 95-degree heat in his second BP outing in four days. “He was really good. We just have to make a decision what to do next.”
Torre said Pavano could throw another batting-practice session or could be farmed out for a rehab assignment. With the minor-league season ending around Labor Day, Pavano has a month to build up enough arm strength to be a candidate for the big-league rotation.
“I felt good and I thought I looked good,” said Pavano, who threw all of his pitches to catching coach Tony Pena. “It’s been a really long road. I’m not opposed to doing a game after this, but that’s not my call.”

I would welcome Pavano with open arms if he could get anyone out when it counted. He sure would be a bonus in October. We have all been jilted by this guy before. Whose spot on the roster does he take? Ponson, see ya. Veras looked pretty good mopping up yesterday. Nick Green will be gone this week. Wait till expanded rosters and give him a couple of soft landing games like TB or Baltimore before you decide anything further.
If Pavano pitches, I'll watch. Until then, he doesn't deserve the ink he gets. It's embarrassing that he's being paid. Detroit's Mike Maroth had similar surgery a week or so AFTER Pavano and he's been assigned to pitch this week in a Minor League rehab. Pavano is a joke.
If and when Pavano ever comes off the DL, Joe Torre better start him off in a mop up role with the Yankees holding (at least) a 10 run lead.
As it is, he'll get more booing from fans than A-Rod ever did.
He'd have to have 4 or more quality starts before he can convince ANYBODY that he's healthy.
he shouldnt get booed. its not his fault hes injured, some people have weaker arms than others. like prior and wood. hell get booed if he comes back and does bad.
also when we did that mvp and lvp of the year...people put pavano on the lvp list. how can u put him on the list and not put sheffield and matsui on. you put pavano on because he was injured all year while sheffield and matsui have been injured almost all of the year.
To be honest, I don't even care that Carl Pavano claims he is ready to play because, in reality, we all know he will not contribute a thing to the Yankees this year. And contrary to what some posters have said, I do not give Pavano a pass because of the fact that he has shown little to no heart while wearing a Yankees uniform. I still have yet to be told what happened last year when he went on the DL for "two weeks" and somehow it turned into July, August, September and October. And I had to listen to how this was going to be a comeback season for him, and instead we haven't seen him once during the season. He was a bad FA signing and I really hope that I don't have to watch him wear the uniform again.
Pavano should not be counted upon for any imput toward the Divison race. He should be given the opportunity to pitch if healthy when it is a meanless situation. If the Yankees benefit from the Pavano FA signing it will be in 2007.
Pavano can at least be counted on to pitch batting practice....right??
Pavano should be traded anywhere for anything, or even nothing, as long as it gets him off the roster as soon as possible.
The man, and I use that term loosely, whined that he wanted out of NY during the offseason. I would have granted his request.
He snickered last year at getting paid not to pitch.
Contrasting Pavano to Yankee players like Jeter, Posada, and Damon, among others, who throw their bodies into the fray every waking minute, Pavano might break a nail on his dainty and fragile body so perhaps he could be placed in a bubble.
Pavano is not a Yankee. The sooner the team makes that official, the better off the team will be.
Carl Pavano? When did we get Carl Pavano?
hey i saw carl pavano in the supermarket yesterday and unfortunately heres some late breaking news. hes gonna need tommy john surgery because he overworked his elbow picking up a can of chicken noodle soup. it was campbells. its a tough loss for us and i'll be the first to say, thank carl. we only wish that the rest of our starting pitchers could be with us for the 100 innings you've put forth in the past 2 years. i mean sure proctor and farnsworth probably have almost that many innings in this season alone, but lets face it, you made those innings count. and you take the 8 million a year like a true professional. kudos carl. oh wait thats not what i meant. i meant you, you have no, MARBLES! YOU HAVE NO MARBLES! compliments of taka tanaka.
Here are some stats for the Carl Pavano people for and against. Games started in MLB are 166. He has completed 6. How many were as a visitor and only had to pitch 8 innings in a losing cause. He has averaged about 6 plus innings a game. ERA 4.27 so, he fits in well if the bullpen does not give up a run. In addition he has had 2 winning seasons in 8 yrs. I know he came off of a 18-8 prior year but what made us go crazy for this guy. I don't blame him for the injuries but his prior record would make question the money and length of contract. For good measure more hits then innings pitched throw in the BB and HBP. You have a three ring circus.
i think the yankee organization learned alot from picking up Pavano and Wright. Two avg. career wise injury proned pitchers. Two more years to go and we are rid of both of these guys. You need to develop pitchers in your system because the risk to injury is too great. If you are going ot pick up a free agent pitcher take a guy like moose or even johnson who dont have a history of injuries and keep the contracts short. It will be a great day for the yankees when this guy is gone

Pavano sure as heck looked great in Florida in 03 and 04...pitched aainst us in WS against Clemens and outpitched him. He can be a stud;just bad luck with injuries have kept him from being a star
