Bubba Goes Boom

Rieber here. I know how much many of you care deeply about him, so I’m sorry to have to be the one to tell you: Bubba Crosby is no longer a Yankee.
The team designated the backup outfielder and blog-posters favorite for assignment on Friday and added reliever Jose Veras as their 12th pitcher.
Joe Torre explained that he really, really wanted a 12th pitcher so he would have someone to pitch in blowouts and Bubba was the most expendable player after the Yankees acquired Bobby Abreu and Craig Wilson.
Crosby was so upset with the news that he angrily refused to talk to reporters before leaving Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
OK, Bubba fans…ready, set, vent.

bubba has fans?

Yes Lupe, Buba has fans. Some of those fans saw a young guy who accepted his assignment on the team. Accepted guys being brought onto the roster and given opportunity to succeed on the team as replacements for Sheff and Matsui before him. He never got the opportunity that Melky was given. I have no problem with Melky. I'll cheer him everyday that he's a Yankee. If, you recall Cashman said the team was ready to start the season with Bubba in CF. My thoughts Torre never gave him 100 at bats as a regular to see what his mettle was. I hope Bubba is picked up by a small market team and given some playing time. Maybe he'll return to the stadium just like Juan Riveria does who has developed into a nice everyday OF.

His mettle was/is a .255 career OBP as a THIRTY YEAR OLD (as of Friday). The guy doesn't belong in the majors. Melky, on the other hand, is at about .360, as a TWENTY-TWO YEAR OLD (also as of Friday). That's a decent major league ballplayer right there, just based on that alone, regardless of any other tools he might possess.

I seriously doubt Crosby will be returning to the stadium in any way, shape, or form, I'm sorry to have to say.

My thougt process was not anything negative about Melky. I applaud his play. Its about Bubba was not given any oppourtunity by Torre. And according to the stats that you presented Torre has a case. I believe and so did Bobby Murcer that Crosby could have hit much better with steady play. You do not hit well with 87 at bats in 5 months into the season. The rash of injuries brought us more of Bernie and Melky. Bubba just did not play. Can I agrue with Joe Torre's handling of the team. Yes and No, No they are in first place. Yes, he appears to have tunnel vision with some of his players. Thus retarts their growth and usefulness.

Bubba is really a great fielder-maybe one of the best in the OF, since I started watchin' the Yanks in 1965. Sorry to see him go, but he just couldn't hit.

I agree with Larry about Torre's tunnel vision with some of his players.

I like Bubba; a lot! However, when he was going to get his shot when Matsui and Sheffield went down, he went down with a hammy. Melky came onto the scene and Bernie was doing great. There just wasn't any room for him. Now, with getting Abreu and Wilson, Bubba won't get the ABs so he had to go.
I hope that he ends up in Florida playing for Giradi. I've got a feeling that he'll flourish there.
Thanks Bubba!

I think we may see Bubba back in September. Last year, we carried Tony Womack on the playoff roster, solely for his pinch-running abilities, so why not Bubba, if he clears waivers?

But obviously, there's no room on the roster for him next year. I, too, hope he finds a home with a team that will give him a fair shot. The Marlins would be great. They need a CFer.

Wait. Because we had the sucky Woemack we should have the sucky Bubb?

Oh I see, no team in MLB wants Bubba, but has a place on a team that wants to win the WS.

What am I missing?

No one said because we had Womack we have to have Bubba. The point is that the calculus changes in the post-season. You don't need as many pitchers, and defense and speed become more valuable against the good pitchers you see in the post-season.

Bubba's defense is suboptimal.

He has no place on a major league roster.

Bubba was a great ball player and did a lot for the yankees when he actually was given a shot. He did great for not being out on the field every day with the rest of them, so it's hard to compare him to the other players. I hope he gets picked up, gets a lot of playing time and shows the talent he has.
